I was posted to a local government in Taraba state. When I got there, I wasn't so surprised at the number of Maths teachers in the school (I experienced something even worse at the secondary school I graduated from); only two. Let me get very basic and remind you by taking you down memory lane. Nigeria experienced and is still experiencing inflation for 2, and only 2 reasons

1. The Naira lost more than 80% of its value within 1 1/2 years. There was a time when the free fall got really scary that one wonders-- Naija how far.

What does this mean? When you have to import which is inevitable by the way, you buy raw materials at way higher price because there's a shift in purchasing power, which invariably leads to increase in domestic price-- manufacturers have to recoup the loss and this should be obvious to the reader.

2. When the naira lost its value, the subsidy on fuel was also removed. Viola! There you have it. The 18K minimum wage did not compound issues, it didn't have any effect to do with the country's inflation. I'm fact, It would have made life better for the few if the others never occurred.

Having established that, inflation is caused when so much money is chasing few goods, when there's monopoly or there's no perfect substitute for a particular product or GOVERNMENT POLICY.

My question. Do you think more money in circulation would necassarily cause an increase in the price of goods? I don't even think there would be too much money in circulation sef. Suppose the 190M Nigerians are broken down to just 10 people, how many work for the government or benefit directly from the government? Okay, 2 out of 10 Nigerians. Okay, so 20 Million Nigerians, all right. Do you think that just because 2 Nigerians, which I highly doubt, receive raise increase, there would be inflation? Please understand that the country is still under the brunt of the inflation that started in 2015, another sharp increase would be disastrous when you remember that some folks earn less than 15K a month. A Corp member said that yes it would cause inflation because the effects of the increase would be felt by not just them but their dependents, too, but this assumes that these government workers do not hoard, save for retirement, use their earnings for diverse project etc.

Another appealed to poverty saying he had a market woman say, "They don increase una allawee so we go increase our price" but this assumes that the demand for a product, if there are alternatives and perfect substitutes, and folks who have enough cash to part away with plays no role in the prices of goods. So few Nigerians would benefit from the new minium wage compared to the entire population that the effects of the new wage increase would not be felt since the money is in the hands of a select few. I don't see how increasing minimum wage would increase price if the value of the naira continues like this. I need to be convinced. How about no regulation or no cost control. This makes sense to me and I'm still trying to understand how our economy could survive without good cost control but again we are assuming that the manufacturer or sellers have monopoly in the market, or the demand would be overboard. I don't think so. I would like to be convinced. Waiting to hear your opinion.
