AreaFada2: Read my first post before I posted the response to another person's comment. I clearly stated what needs to be done first to make it conducive to tourism. There's prostitution in Thailand but tourism is still vital to the economy. As insecure and notorious Nigeria currently is, even visa free won't attract patrons of prostitutes.
Have you been to Thailand, tourism is important to their country but at a high cost to the moral and social development of the country. Thailand is known as the sex capital of the world for a reason and the consequence cannot be imagined. I will rather forgo the benefit of tourism, than the crazy prostitution going on in that country. When mother openly sell they children for sex and young men become ladyboys for foreign tourist.
The only tourist that will be brave to patronise Nigeria today will be foreign hustlers and sex tourist. Nigeria has a terrible reputation in the international community.
AreaFada2: So you think only men seeking prostitutes will come? Many will be couples and families.
Morocco & Tunisia have free visa to tourists from many Western countries. I have enjoyed it many times. No prostitutes ever wanted or needed.
In the 1990s, some people in Nigeria opposed GSM because they thought armed robbers will be using it to communicate and operate more easily.
So roadside food & petrol bottle sellers were using mobile phones in Cotonou years before big men began using them in Nigeria.
Always harness the positive and strategize against the negative side of things if needs be.
My friend, Nigeria is not a friendly country to visit, too many hustlers, corrupt police, inefficient services and poor infrastructures, the only thing that is cheap and easily available are ashewos.
juman: Sheu shagari was better president than any of those greedy generals.
You didn't live under Shehu Shagari then... the man was weak and clueless. Umaru Dikko, Akinloye and Saraki had a field day with the national treasury.
beejay85: These custom monkeys will never cease to amaze me...this items came in through via apapa....cleared by custom certified agents.... After collecting money at the port of entry .......u guys still come around to seize this items....I fear for naija oooo
Then the traders will have copies of their custom certificates on hand to release their goods.
Meritocracy: This useless set of leaders ruin textile industries and now blocking alternative to poor people. How many Nigerian student or working class of useless minimum wage can afford new cloth in Nigeria
The smugglers and criminal traders ruined the textile industry.
funmike83: Hmm,these pple are just blocking all the means of livelihood for the common man. Why are securites behaving like robots na. This is very very unfair
Majority of those clothes are smuggled goods. How can the country funds it's budget Nigerian refuse to pay tax and duties.
xaggar: Shame on you to compare a former federal capital territory with Calabar. Was Calabar a federal capital territory of Nigeria as it's known today? Olodo!
Person wey never see other places dey talk about other state governors. Give other southern regions (warri, Calabar, pH) the same ports status as Lagos and see if the overrated pigsty of a state isn't emigrated.
What has the NDDC done with all the funds at their disposal, why can't they repair the ports....nonsense.
Are Nigerians now expecting a government that can't manage basic refineries to manage a $30 billion infrastructures investment?
Refineries process no crude oil in three months Refineries under the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation stayed dormant for three consecutive months as they processed no drop of crude oil, the latest report on the operations of the facilities has shown.
An analysis of the consolidated operations of the refineries showed that the plants were dormant in July, August and September with respect to the processing of crude oil.
The refineries under the management of the NNPC are the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company, Port Harcourt Refining Company and Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company.
It was also observed that the consolidated capacity utilisation of the facilities was zero per cent in each of the three months.
It said, “The model takes cognisance of the products worth and crude costs. The combined value of output by the three refineries (at import-parity price) for the month of September 2019 amounted to N1.03bn.
The same NNPC GMD that cannot operate the refineries can afford to close down Maiduguri, no wonder Boko Haram exists today.
How police locked down Maiduguri for NNPC GMD’s children’s wedding
At least 46 aircraft reportedly landed at the Maiduguri International Airport, most conveying guests to the ceremony. On a normal day, about five aircraft land at the airport.
But the event turned out to be a nightmare for motorists and locals in the state who woke up to see armed security personnel barricading roads in strategic locations in the state capital.
Thegeneralqueen: Nothing new he was already a billionaire before he became a governor he has so many off shore companies abroad some deals on cars while the ones in Dubai deals on gold he has many hotels in Dubai
Now I understand why there aren't any organise gold mining institutions in Zamfara.
itsme01: build a road and toll it, build rail and get people to pay.. provide power and watch industries start springing up, dont forget we have the population and the resources just steel and power being our major constrain
Taking large scale debt has never been a development strategy, especially if the country lacks the capability and capacity to manage its existing debts portfolio.
Why not start with cutting the cost of government and recurring expenditures, Nigeria spends more on the National assembly than health care. The country has four refineries operating at less than 5% capacity, it will take less than $1 billion to bring all four refineries into 80% operation which will significantly reduce the country $8 billion refined oil import bill.
How much has been wasted on the failed NDDC agency in the South-South, that could have been invested in gas turbine power plants?
nonsense talk oga pay back the 16 billion dollars you stole..
Is it not stupidity that makes Africans join IMF, World Bank, Paris club and demonstrate our commitment yet we are afraid to take single digit loans to fund critical infrastructures like US does?
If FG builts a mega power plant that can generate 3000 mega watt of power in each region through loan and borrowing and get steel complex like Ajaokuta working Nigeria would become super developed in less than 5 years and money we generate from power would pay back the loans and give us extra income
Small Rwanda and Ghana are leaving Big for nothing Nigeria behind through infrastructural Loans plans with National debt higher than Nigeria's yet we speak grammer everyday without taking any action
.
Infrastructures are liabilities. The country will also require loans to maintain these new roads, rail networks and power plants, unless they have designed a self-sustaining method to support these complex and expensive infrastructures such as toll gates for roads and high tax rates and payments fees for electricity and rail networks.
Difrent: Do you know that our miserly 4000 MW can actually power most homes in Nigeria if all the transmission infrastructure is there . What we don't have is power for industries, especially heavy power consuming industries
How many homes are in Nigeria? Egypt has an installed capacity of 32000 MW with a population of 100 million and they provide full electricity to their population
Siemens has successfully managed to boost Egypt’s power generation capacity by over 40 percent by connecting 14.4 gigawatts to the Egyptian national grid. This is enough power to supply over 40 million Egyptians with reliable electricity and provide a much-needed power to different industrial sectors. https://new.siemens.com/eg/en/company/topic-areas/egypt-megaproject.html
AreaFada2: Dude we never ready anything. If not 9ja would be a massive IT/ICT hub. Developing apps, doing IT jobs at cheaper rate than even India, cornering a big junk of the international market sector online.
Just take ICT, healthcare, arts/culture and tourism sectors alone. Drastically improve security, give visa on arrival to most Western countries and see tourism sector boom. Promote Nollywood & film crews from across the world will be coming to film in Nigeria. Consolidate existing tourist destinations.
Connect these places with fast trains. Travelling from Osun-Osogbo sacred groves to see ancient Benin moats/ramparts will be a doddle. From Yankari Game Reserve to ancient city of Kano will be within a few hours of train travel. Instead of losing healthcare manpower to other countries. we can become a medical tourism destination.
A few billion dollars of stolen oil money can achieve all the above.
Give visa on arrival to most Western countries and see tourism sector boom. Visa on arrival to Western tourist will only boost prostitution.
Asour: I once saw a documentary that harped that Light rail projects (popularized in America has never been successful in populous cities). It's possible that more than 300M$ has been put into lightrails in Nigeria already. Wow!
Why Light Rail is better than Bus Rapid Transit - The Armchair Urbanist
ekestic1976: Obasanjo, a pot calling the kettle black! You abandoned Ibadan to Ilorin road midway; you couldn't complete Lagos-Ibadan road; your hometown, Abeokuta didn't feel any impact of your 8-year rule - you failed to complete the Abeokuta-Lagos road: still, you get mouth to criticise Ambode. Never seen anything like Obasanjo's grandstanding and hypocrisy in all my years, I tell you!
iLegendd: A politician criticizing another politician is part of their games. I always ignore their words.
This is constructive criticism, what is the purpose of prioritising the Oshodi interchange at the expense of the critical Lagos Light Rail project. Ambode wanted a new project to steal funds.
Obasanjo also criticised Ambode of prioritising the construction of Oshodi bus interchange. The terminus was commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari days before Ambode left office even though the project was not completed.
slimfit1: That is surely better than building schools and hospitals.
Cleanliness, organisation and the use of space (decongestion)is as good as the best schools and hospitals. You wouldn't get rat infestation in a well-planned city. I will advise you to read up on Haussmann's renovation of Paris - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haussmann%27s_renovation_of_Paris
Vanhooijdonk: It was a terrible idea to begin with-reduce the stake in the joint ventures to 40% to raise billions of dollars for audio infrastructure projects that will be looted by the fantastically corrupt political class. And face future shortfall in revenue which will lead to greater budget deficit and debt financing, further bringing to country closer to future insolvency.
I am happy the decision was reversed, the President was deceived by selfish advisers to reduce the stake to 40%. This same advisers would have gone through the backdoor to buy stakes in the joint ventures.
So it's better the government borrow $30 billion that they have no means of repayment.
This must be reduced drastically or stopped outrightly. Waste of taxpayer's money. This is one, out of the many rubbish laws that PMB must removed from our coustitution. Laws made by criminals since 1999 to enrich themselves alone.
Increasing the minimum wage and maintaining it, is what all states should be concerned about now. God bless PMB for that.
A New and better Nigeria we want, A New and better Nigeria we must have.
God bless Nigeria.
You expect a president that doesn't even use Nigeria medical services to fight for change in Nigeria constitution.
The same president that has doubled Nigeria foreign debt from $10 billion to $22 billion and is about to borrow an addition $30 billion. A president that has done nothing to fix the refineries that can save Nigeria $8 billion per annum.
itsme01: the total out put of the 3 old refinery can not satisfy current Nigeria, and for your information Buhari is reponsible for building them as a minister while other rulers couldnt maitain it
Buhari was the Commissioner of Petroleum, responsible for signing the contract to build the Kaduna refineries in 1978, the execution and construction of the refinery was started and completed by the Shagari government. Buhari is the current minister of petroleum resources yet there has been no attempt to fix the four refineries over the past four years.
adams123: Bros, go learn Islam...you will enjoy it. since you are still alive you can still make heaven.. forget about the behavior of some northern Muslims. just drop your ego for awhile.
I have learnt Islam and became an atheist. Just look at the state of Northern Nigeria after the introduction of political Sharia law.
I doubt whether this refinery will be ready by 2022. I like to see other refineries under construction and the government refineries privatise so that we can have dynamic and competitive oil and petrochemical industrial sector.
Lead to where? The state can't even complete the priority Red and Blue rail network, yet they want to embark on another expensive project that they can't even start.
sonnie10: In my opinion, Nigeria’s number one problem is electricity. Think of how many small businesses that have been put out due to high cost of running generator. There are also countless other small businesses that one cannot do because of inadequate power supply.
How will you scale the electricity for 200 million people?
Nigeria needs to focus on bottom-up development such as regional development as against National development which is expensive and requires a higher capability threshold. Let the regions develop their own power infrastructures based on the local resources of Solar, Hydro, Gas, Coal and Wind.
Unless the country has political and economic restructuring the country will never develop. Regional Restructuring will allow the progressive region within the country to scale their resources and infrastructures for region development that can later be integrated into national development.
400billionman: Atiku is intelligent. And i didn't know he is also genuine. From my experience in Nigeria, i wouldn't tell Nigerians what I had in mind till I became President.
The only reason most of them give for supporting buhary is that No more free money for wailers.. No more corruption.
That leaves me laughing.
Atiku summarized it by saying, " I and President Obasanjo paid all Nigeria's debt, and that what we have today are People who came to Reap where they did not sow "..
I very much doubt Atiku wrote this article by himself.
Bedwyr: Add fuel subsidy removal...and we might even save more....
But Nigerians don't like the idea of making NNPC more private or selling the refineries ….because it means higher fuel prices.
Privatising the refineries, means that the cost of production is going to go up....and that means that a subsidy won't be the answer...as the owner of the private refinery would be operating at a loss...SO It has to go.
Which would lead to riots...
But I like your idea. Pity most Nigerians don't like it.
(Also making NNPC private run reduces the glorious opportunities for corruption there. No way any gofment would allow that...).
But the four refineries at 450k bpd are all operating at less than 5 % capacity, hence privatising make perfect sense as it will reduce fuel imports and create a competitive environment with Dangote 650 bpd refineries.
A competitive refinery environment will reduce the cost of fuel and cut fuel import hence saving precious FX and reducing cost to the consumers.
