canadaman18: As others have said the answer is No. I’ve had coworkers who weren’t STEM graduates .
However you’ll have to be very interested and work hard to catch up on stuff you may not know e.g design patterns , software principles and best. practices. It’s important to focus on these when learning to become a developer , knowing programming languages is just one small piece
I just want to stress that IMO the biggest factor that will determine success as a software engineer is interest . Because there’ll be problems that might take days to solve and sometimes involve you starting almost from scratch several times . Without genuine interest for the field , this will become a frustrating cycle , on the other hand if you’re passionate , you’ll see each cycle as one step closer to a beautiful solution. , thanks, can I throw in more questions? |

GoodMemory: Sydney V Melbourne
Potential migrants are often faced with the difficult choice of Sydney or Melbourne. In my estimate, the probability of moving to either Sydney or Melbourne is 40% each. Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane share the remaining 20%. I do not know if I am qualified to write on the difference between Sydney and Melbourne as I only spent 1 week in Sydney, but I will try and present an unbiased view of both cities. I will also rely on contributors who have lived substantially in both cities to correct me wherever my views are inaccurate. For the purpose of this exercise, I will give a 1 to the winner and 0 to the loser. Please note the 0 point does not represent an absent of that factor in a city, rather it is only a relative score.
JOBS – Sydney 1 Melbourne 0 I am tempted to make this area a tie between Sydney and Melbourne, but I think it will not be fair to Sydney if I did so. A quick search of the keyword “accounting” on www.seek.com.au returned 5,841 jobs for Sydney and 4,052 for Melbourne. This is particularly close. A second search for the keyword “Engineering” returned 5,081 for Sydney and 4,016 jobs for Melbourne. Once again, a 0 does not represent difficulty in getting a job in Melbourne, it is merely a comparison between number of jobs in Melbourne and Sydney. Having said that, you can see the returns are close so either choice is a good one.
SALARY - Sydney 1 Melbourne 0 According to Numbeo, average monthly salary after tax in Sydney is 5,179.21 A$ while that of Melbourne is 4,556.03 A$ (April 2019). Remember, these are just average values.
COST OF LIVING - Sydney 1 Melbourne 1 This is a tie as the cost of living is a function of average salaries earned. While cost of living is higher in Sydney, salaries are higher too so it evens out. See the link below. https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Australia&city1=Melbourne&country2=Australia&city2=Sydney
TRANSPORTATION - Sydney 0 Melbourne 1 This is one area where Melbourne wins hands down. Moving from point A to B is quite easier in Melbourne as it operate trains, tram and buses as against Sydney’s trains and buses.
FOOD AND CULTURE - Sydney 0 Melbourne 1 Melbourne has on several occasions won the Most Liveable City in the world. Melbourne is known as Australia’s coffee capital. Asian and European cuisines are also everywhere. It is often said Melbourne has great restaurants but Sydney great pubs. As a Nigerian, I doubt if this will have any effect on your lifestyle as we are traditionally lovers of naija food. (smiles)
SPORTS - Sydney 0 Melbourne 1 Most Aussies claim, though ignorantly that Melbourne is the sport capital of the world! While this may be far-fetched, I think when compared to Sydney, it takes the upper hand. Formula One Grand Prix, Australian Tennis Open, AFL Grand Final are some of the major sporting events in Melbourne. So if you are a sport lover, Melbourne is the place to be.
WEATHER - Sydney 1 Melbourne 0 This is a subjective one. Some people prefer a cold weather to a warm one. Melbourne is colder than Sydney. Melburnians say there are 4 seasons in one day. In Melbourne, it’s 5 degrees in the morning, 32 degrees in the afternoon and 10 degrees in the night with lots of rain. One day, maximum temp is 35 degrees, the next, it’s a high of 18 degrees, so temperatures fluctuate in Melbourne. Temperatures are relatively warmer and more stable in Sydney.
ROAD NETWORK AND URBAN PLANNING - Sydney 0 Melbourne 1 I wish I could give Melbourne 2 points here because it wins hands down! The roads network in Sydney are horrible. Very narrow, undulating and confusing. To me, the planning of the roads looks more like an after-thought. There are also many roads sign warnings and visible traffic cops. In Melbourne, you can drive months without sighting a traffic patrol.
SAFETY - Sydney 1 Melbourne 0 To Nigerians who are moving to Australia, you might not see the difference in this regard. Australia is safe and you can sleep with your eyes closed in both cities. However, lately there have been concerns about cyclist gangs (Middle eastern extraction) and African gang violence in Melbourne. Even though the organized African gang thing was the creation of the media, there is still some elements of violence among the Sudanese youths. Having said that, both cities are safe, and you can walk anytime of the day without fear of being mugged. https://www.numbeo.com/crime/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Australia&city1=Melbourne&country2=Australia&city2=Sydney
GENERAL FEEL - Sydney 0 Melbourne 1 Melbourne is pretty laid-back when compared to Sydney. Sydneysiders seem to be more in a hurry. They hardly maintain eye contacts. At a time, I felt it was good in some ways as that was different from the crazy stares in Melbourne. On second thoughts, I realized most of the people I met were tourists who do not really care where you came from. Then I went to the suburbs and the staring started. This is a subjective one, but I personally think Melburnians are generally nicer and more approachable than Sydneysiders, so my point goes to Melbourne
Total Sydney 5/10 - Melbourne 6/10 on a scale of one to ten, how racist would you say Australians are? |

Zutlin: You don't need a Computer science degree or any related degree. What you need is hands-on training in Software development.
You can start with the basics: HTML, CSS and Javascript. A while back, @AZeD1 recommended the following free sites and they've been very helpful.. - w3schoolsdotcom - freecodecampdotcom For Javascript, you might want to take a class on Udemy. I currently use one.
If you already have knowledge of HTML, CSS and perhaps a bit of Javascript, you can try applying to HackerYou coding bootcamp. They train you for free to be a front-end developer but you pay back when you get a job. I hear getting in is competitive though. - hackeryou.com
P.S: @AZeD1 kindly make any necessary corrections/additions to my input. You know say I still be learner. OK, I have the skill set necessary to become a comp/software engineer, but a business degree, can I apply for express entry |

canadaman18: Hey folks, this advice is specifically for those in IT Field more specifically software / computer engineers ,and Full stack developers
There is a lot of demand for professionals in the aforementioned fields with extremely good salaries. It is not rare to meet an entry level grad making 80,000+ a year , infact that is what a top grad can expect in the GTA. An experienced developer can make 150K + easily. Now given the demand , are these jobs easy to get , YES and NO.
Why No? Unlike a lot of professions (and of course no disrespect to those professions) software interviews are much more than a cultural fit or situational questions. You can expect multiple rounds of technical interviews and questions like "What is OOP" will be warm up at the most. So how do you get yourself prepared for this "exam" , the only answer is practice. It doesn't matter if you have been a developer for 10+ years, without practice you'll have forgotten a lot of the fundamental Data Structures and Algorithms which will be heavily tested for.
What then is the best way to practice : 1. ' www dot leetcode dot com ' is one I highly recommend. There are tons of questions but if you can solve one or two questions per day in easy mode and then ramping up difficulty progressively , after 2-3months you should be among the top candidates in most interviews.
2. Cracking The Coding Interview is another one . This is a comprehensive book that covers a lot of topics as well as provides tips on how to ace interviews at companies like Google, Amazon etc
I came here to share this because I know we Nigerians are smart and I personally want to see more Nigerians in top tier tech jobs but it's hard because most people wont even pass the first round relying simply on their existing experience.
Why Yes? As I said above if you religiously go through the above material , youll find that your skills will move to a whole new level and these interviews will become very easy.
For anyone who takes interest in the materials and has questions on algorithms or implementations and so on , let me know
Source : Im a software engineer at one of the top 3 companies in the world.
Happy Coding guys ! good job bro, I would love to know if it's necessary to have a computer science or engineering degree to work as a software/computer eng, or programmer |

czaratwork: Accountants and finance professionals, please ensure you learn advanced excel before coming in. I mean pivot tables, recording macros, VBA, vlookup, sumifs etc. It will help you in your job hunt. You can spice it up by learning powerpoint too as you can be called to do presentations at short notice. You can also visit indeed.ca to have an idea of the requirements for the career you want to pursue.
Also consider financial analyst role as you can never get it wrong with this role. If you type in financial analyst role in GTA in indeed, you will see that job berekete here. The question is Do you have the skills? All you need is experience in advanced excel where you use the tools to perform variance analysis (actual vs budgeted) with pivot charts, budgeting, monthend activities and presentation skills. You may also need experience in an ERP like SAP, ORACLE, JEDWARDS and co. I tell you they are ready to waive that Canadian experience if you have the skills. I have seen it happen for people.
There are so many free tutorials on excel and powerpoint on youtube and these videos come with materials you can practice with. udemy.com also has very cheap training on financial analysis. Some banks in Naija call this role performance management. We have performed most of these roles but with different titles/names.
Some keywords you can add to your resume are balanced scorecards, flash reports (just before month end variance analysis) and dashboard (after month end variance analysis) Monthly business review (MBR) process improvement and automation (excel helps you do both)etc.
Prepare very well before coming here and you will not waste time in the labour market.
Ok bye. Good day sir, in regards to job openings in Canada, which of this field is mostly favoured, Finance or Marketing, and secondly can a finance graduate work as an accountant? thanks! |
