There aren't as much engineering spaces for corpers as there are for medical corpers. Not all teach you know, and you don't expect the ones that teach to earn same amount with the doctors that can run 48 hours call or the nurses, pharmacists, etc that run shifts(including night) and work on public holidays. Besides it's for just a year, then you are more likely to earn more than doctors when you get an actual engineering job after nysc.

Anyway mine was the day I was supposed to go out and needed to make a call, I thought I was lucky when power was restored, i plugged my phone only to return from the bathroom to find a really high voltage and my phone off... Long story short, I got my phone 2 months later after it went through 2 engineers, and I spent approximately 25k. No kidding!
That's the most recent that I'm still pained about, there are others.
