obembet: Due to the high cost of import duties placed on the Automotive industry possibly to encourage local production, improve the economy, and still make selling price of each manufactured car affordable by an average citizen, the federal government in 2013 adopted an Automobile policy, in a bid to encourage foreign and indigenous car manufacturers to site their assembly plants within its territory since vehicles produced in the country don’t attract import levies, thus tend to be cheaper than its foreign counterparts.
The good news is that the Nigerian automobile manufacturing Industry is growing with a handful of these companies producing motor spare parts, fixing broken vehicle components, revamping used cars and assembling imported car parts. Just a few are into production of brand new (tear rubber) vehicles in Nigeria and that is a backlash at least for the labour market that begs for more employment opportunities.
Over the years, the growth of the auto Industry has witnessed series of challenges that is seeing to the preference given to foreign fairly used (Tokunbo) cars into the country. The reasons behind this shift are embedded in the history of this Industry in Nigeria especially that of the 1980s. Spare a few minutes to know what really happened.
History of Automobile manufacturing in Nigeria
The history of the Automotive Industry in Africa per se dates back to the colonial rule era when the British merchants brought them in during the ’50s into their protectorates. After the independence, the government went into a joint venture partnership that brought in world-class makers of fuel-powered conveyance units at the time from America, Germany, France and the United Kingdom which saw to the establishment of the Six assembly plants following the oil boom of the 1970s:
National Truck Manufacturers, Kano
Volkswagen of Nigeria Limited, Lagos
Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Limited, Kaduna
Anambra Motor Manufacturing Limited, Enugu
Leyland Nigeria Limited, Ibadan
Steyr Nigeria Limited, Bauchi
That partnership included subsidies on imported car parts to encourage these foreign experts.
These assembly lines were mainly into production of commercial Trucks and Passenger cars. Apart from the National Truck manufacturers located in Kano, Leyland Nigeria and Anambra Motor Manufacturing Limited were particularly into massive production of Trucks, Police vans and other military, security personnel vehicles. On the other hand, Volkswagen & Peugeot took care of passenger cars.
One can safely say that the government at the time heavily patronized and supported the Auto Industry mainly to enhance movement (mobility).
Since demand for these products was high enough to keep these companies in business, more than 100 units were reported to have been assembled per day. These plants produced the popular cars of the 1970 – 1980s and also left a trace in some of the vehicles we use today. The cars produced include: Peugeot 504, 505, and other Volkswagen products like Beetle, Jett, the Golf, Passat, and the Kombi bus which later metamorphosed into Danfo that we know on Lagos roads today.
Fast-forward to 1989, the country experienced a shortfall in oil prices and since crude oil contributed reasonably to the national treasury, the industry started experiencing a decline in demand which resulted in some of the firms going out of market.
Having been faced with such an unexpected tragedy, the Nigerian government tried its best to remedy the situation including increased charges on import duties so as to meet up. That move did backfire as cost of production went up, initially suppliers were not able to meet up with demand from buyers due to increased cost of production.
When it continued that way, people resorted to Tokunbo cars which became cheaper than Made-in-Nigerian cars and that was how we got to where we are today.
Car Manufacturers in Nigeria Now you know how Tokunbo cars became the order of the day, it is worth mentioning that Nigeria still have automobile manufacturers who have managed to thrive amidst high influx of Tokunbo (used) cars like Toyota, Mercedes and Honda.
For the sake of simplicity, we have divided the list into indigenous and foreign vehicle manufacturers

1. Nord Automobiles Limited
Ajayi Joshua Oluwatobi is the founder and CEO of the local manufacturing firm, Nord Motors. He is also a polished entrepreneur and co-founder of Jetvan Automobiles Limited, a recognized dealer of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter in the country.
Currently the company has its headquarters in Lagos with some of its products including Nord A3, Nord Max, Nord A5, Nord Flit, etc. The firm aims to re-establish Nigeria as a car-manufacturing country once again.
2. Lanre Shittu Motors (LSM)

3. Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing
Innocent Chukwuma widely known as Innoson Motors is an indigenous car manufacturer who rose from a motorcycle spare parts trader to a big name in the Automotive industry in Nigeria and Africa at large. Its automobile division (the IVM) which is a subsidiary of Innoson Group of Companies was established in 2007 – got recognized as the first indigenous car manufacturer in Africa by the administration of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who commissioned the company on the 15th of October 2010.
4. Peugeot Nigeria
One of the foremost auto parts assembly plants in Nigeria is owned by Peugeot as we indicated in the brief auto history. The company which happens to be a joint venture between Peugeot and Nigerian government since 1969 is still functional till today in Kano despite its numerous challenges.

7. Stallion Motors
In what seemed like a bid to privatize the economy, the FG also sold its stake it had in Volkswagen of Nigeria Limited to Stallion Motors.
This acquisition saw to the locally assembled Nissan vehicles that flooded the auto market in 2014. Producing them here reduced the price of these products which seemingly got the attention of some government officials who later adopted the brand as an official government car.
8.Coscharis Motors
This company is one of the most popular and sought-after assembly plant for luxury cars like BMW, Morris Garages, Ford, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar, Land Rover and MINI vehicles. In 2018, the Nigerian auto dealer completed its ultramodern plant with production capacity set to churn out over 10,000 vehicles every year.

9. Proforce Motor

If you ask your pharmacist for amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium, he will sell you the same medicine that is a lot lot cheaper. Same with panadol/paracetamol. You can pay for name or you can pay for medicinal content…the choice is yours.
There is no medicine that GSK sells in Nigeria that is in common use that does not have a safe, generic, effective, alternative some at up to 1/10th of the price.

The 🇷🇺 Russian Justice Ministry on Friday said it has filed a lawsuit with the nation’s Supreme Court to outlaw Gays, Lesbians, LGBTQ “international public movement” as extremist, the latest crippling blow against the already beleaguered LGBTQ community in the increasingly conservative country.
The ministry said in an online statement announcing the lawsuit that authorities have identified “signs and manifestations of extremist nature” in “the activities of the LGBT movement active” in Russia, including “incitement of social and religious discord.” Russia’s Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing to consider the lawsuit for Nov. 30, the ministry said.
It wasn’t immediately clear what exactly the label would entail for LGBTQ people in Russia if the Supreme Court sides with the Justice Ministry. But the move in itself represents the latest, and by far the most drastic, step in the decadelong crackdown on gay rights in Russia unleashed under President Vladimir Putin, who has put “traditional family values” at the cornerstone of his rule.

I saw one other bigot here on this thread condemning agbo and other herbal/traditional or alternative medicine after someone suggested it. I didn't bother to step into the convo because with just a simple googling, he would have realized that NAFDAC-approved trado-medical centres exist in Lagos State and a couple of states, so, the fear of taking non-standardized herbal remedies does not exist anymore. In Europe, American, and Asia, herbal medicine or alternative medicine has gained ascendancy... First of all, I clarify that I hold no absolute authority on the true nature of this subject. My submission so far is based on years of observations, trend, deductions, logic and my undying interest in African metaphysics and esoteric knowledge, specifically in what I have termed Yoruba Advanced Sciences erroneously known to many as Juju (a term of french origin).
The purpose of creating this thread is to enlighten those who don't know or are usually confused about what it is meant by 'Money Ritual'. This thread does not seek the opinion of those black Africans who ONLY judge and measure this world and it reality by the theology of Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity and Islam).

Money Ritual which is different from, is very often times used interchangeably with the term 'Blood Money' to confer the same meaning when actually they are completely different in meaning.

For instance those mafias in Europe and Russia, gangsters and kingpins in USA and drug lords in Latin world all whom are involve in illegal drug trade and trafficking, can be argued to be indulging in blood money because their wealth/money is tied to countless loss of lives. A hired gun, a mercenary, an hit-man, an assassin can all be said to be involve in Blood Money even an armed robber who has taken human life before in the process of acquiring money.

Money Ritual The Yoruba generic word for it is Ògun Ówó. Money Ritual can be accepted as the proper English translation of the word 'Ògun Òwó' which I can define as any supernatural means of acquiring whatever symbolizes Ówó money, through the application of certain arcane knowledge known only to the practitioners of a branch of iṣegun (Yoruba Esoteric Knowledge)
Esoteric refers to knowledge unavailable to everyone. For instance everyone knows how to boil Yam with water which makes it an Exoteric knowledge, however someone once proved to me that it is also possible to boil a Yam without the application of water, and he did it, now that's Esoteric. No, he insisted he wasn't going to teach me the procedure of how it was done and I respect that.
If Ogun Owo is the Yoruba generic word for Money Ritual, then you should know in Yoruba esoteric parlance, the technical word for it is Osholẹ.
Osholẹ as it is called among the Oniseguns (practitioners of Ogun (supernatural magic)), is a sub-branch of Isegun (craft of Ogun) that encompasses all the metaphysical knowledges of acquiring Owo in a shortcut manner. According to my very limited, uneasy and painful researches I have come to realise that the more effective the results of a type of Oshole is, the more it diabolic requirements and consequence.
A sound Babalawo (an Ifa priest/practitioner) knows more about isegun, their true nature, intricacies and repercussions, that's why a true Babalawo must and will never do Oshole for an asking client, since it is a direct violation of Ifa teaching and ethics. Only the Oniseguns are the ones doing it, and often times a self-compromised Babalawo.
It is a shame that many Yorubas as reflected on Nairaland carries enough knowledge about semitic cultures but knows very little or nothing about theirs just like the differences I have just explained above and many more about the nature, order, purpose and hierarchy of their traditionalists who are the keeper of their culture. Worst of it all are the so called Yoruba speaking movies, especially the mount zion flicks that demonises everything about the Yoruba traditions they do not understand. The Chinese have the Shoguns and Japanese the Samurais and yet never denigrates it just like the Europeans still celebrates 'head hunting'. Without deviating further, let us now unravel the efficacy of Money Ritual or Osholẹ.
First of all, Osholẹ is by no means recommended nor will it be recommended by an Ifa priest when consulting over an issue relating to lack of money or financial problems. There are better alternatives of no consequence proposed by the Ifa priest to a visiting consulter. However, since it takes an Onisegun or a corrupt Babalawo to do it, I'm afraid that it does truly exist and works but not in the way Nollywood and urban legend have exaggerated it. Nature abhors a vacuum, any vacuum created by their exit will be filled. Peugeot and VW left Nigeria…Toyota took their place. I went through the OPs past NL posts and discovered that he's still into posted politically and ethnically bigoted threads, and hate speeches even as recent as yesterday. He's one of those who create threads to stir up hatred and the emotions of ill-informed people here on NL instead of providing functional information. I made a useful contribution here only for him to quote me and went off tangent due to his lack of comprehension.

casualobserver: Exactly. I said this in a previous post. Once a company develops a drug it has a patent where only it can make that drug. These parents usually palsy 10 yrs and once the patent expires anyone can make the same drugs. All these drugs are out of patent and have cheaper generic alternatives….that’s the real reason they’ve exited Nigeria…they can’t compete with the generics and they don’t want to lower their prices in Nigeria because people will start sourcing these products in Nigeria. I will post a graphic I stumbled across this morning below to highlight the cost of insulin in different countries. Another good example is paracetamol. Every Dick and Harry pharmaceutical company in Nigeria produces paracetamol for a fraction of the cost of panadol. Only the well heeled in a country like Nigeria buy panadol which is simply a brand name for paracetamol. That’s why these companies are leaving.

`Kind culture’ Balzano has been able to form a strong network of friends made up of other expats, as well as locals, and feels very much at peace.
“The people here are just so warm, inviting and authentic,” she says. “It’s a very kind culture.
“It’s a less aggressive existence than Miami, which is a very aggressive city.”
She has nothing but praise for the “amazing” Colombia’s healthcare system – the World Health Organization ranked it at number 22 in an analysis of 191 countries, which she had already used during previous visits.
“I think a misconception that a lot of Americans have, is that US healthcare is the best in the world,” she notes. “And I will beg to differ on that.”
In fact, the country’s “manageable” healthcare costs led Balzano to launch her own consulting business, Global Connect Marketing Services, in June, something that had been a dream of hers for many years.
“I never could do it in the US because of the healthcare situation,” she explains. “It’s very expensive to carry health insurance when you work on your own.”
She’s also a big fan of Medellin’s “world class” shopping malls.
“They’re vibrant,” Balzano adds. “US shopping centers are struggling to stay vibrant. Here, that’s not the case.”
She tries to avoid purchasing imported goods, which will inevitably cost more, but admits to splashing out on some crunchy peanut butter every now and then.
However, Balzano has found one particular item to be more expensive in Colombia than back home – wine.
“The wine selection is very limited,” she says, explaining that much of the wine that’s on offer is from nearby Argentina and Chile. “And what you can find is relatively expensive.”
Balzano admits that the subject of safety often comes up when she’s questioned about her life in Medellin, once considered the most dangerous city in the world.
But while Colombia has long been associated with drugs and gangs, the country’s murder rate dropped by 82% from 1993 to 2018, and crime rates in Medellin have lowered significantly over the years.
Although Balzano acknowledges that crime is still a problem, she feels that this is comparative to “any large city in the US.”
“There’s crime in most places,” she adds.
Balzano goes on to describe how she’s learned to be cautious with her cellphone or any “electronics or laptops” while out and about.
“You have to not be walking around the street with your head buried in MapQuest [an online web mapping service] trying to navigate the street,” she adds, noting that this is something that “culturally takes some time to adjust to.”
“However, in all the times I’ve come here over eight years, I have never had a negative experience in terms of my personal safety.”
While Balzano accepts that many travelers still have pre-conceived notions about Medellin, she says that she and her expat friends feel incredibly grateful to be living there, and consider it as something of a “best kept secret.”
“Medellin is a different city today,” she says. “That doesn’t mean that it’s perfect. But it is not the Medellin of the ’80s and the ‘90s, and a lot of people still believe that [it is].”
Balzano, whose former husband is from Costa Rica, lived in Latin America previously, and has always had a huge appreciation for the culture.
“It’s warm, it’s inviting, it’s vibrant, and it’s alive,” she says. “I just feel that Colombia needs its heyday.
“It’s a beautiful place. People here paid their price to live the lives that they’re living now.”
She says she’d advise anyone considering moving to Colombia to do plenty of research beforehand, and “come with their eyes wide open.”
“This isn’t Europe,” she says. “It’s Latin America. And Latin America is grittier than I think a life in Spain [would be]. That [the grit] is part of what I like about it.”
When asked what she misses about living in the US, Balzano concedes that not having a car – she doesn’t feel comfortable driving in Colombia – has taken some getting used to.
“There’s a lot of motorcycles here and they’re allowed to drive in between the lanes,” she explains.
“Driving here would petrify me. So I plan on just using ride shares and taxis. I have no intention of ever getting a car.”
Although Balzano misses her friends in the US, she says that they’re “welcome to come visit whenever they’d like.”
One thing she definitely doesn’t miss is the ”contentious” political climate in America.
Why American families are leaving the US for Europe In fact, Balzano says that being able to take a step back and look at the political situation in the US “with a much wider lens” has been a breath of fresh air.
“We [her and other US expats] can get out of our own echo chambers,” she says. “And that has actually been very nice.
“It’s been like a load lifted off our shoulders.”
Balzano concedes that she’s stopped feeling guilty that she’s not doing her “civil duty of staying intimately involved in politics.”
“I no longer need to worry about the local politics of Miami,” she says, before explaining that while she pays attention to the political situation in Colombia, as a “guest” of the country, she doesn’t have “the same vested interest in it.”
While Balzano stresses that she’s still adapting to her new life, and not everything has been smooth sailing, she has “zero regrets” and makes a point of always focusing on the positives about the experience.
“I willfully made this decision to come here, so I have chosen to remain focused on all the positives rather than the negatives,” she explains. “Like anywhere in the world, there are pros and cons [to Colombia].
“But as long as the list of pros outweighs the list of cons, I think that this is the right place for me to be.”
An awesome article. Besides, Miami is projected to go underwater in a few decades to come, so some folks are moving out already but a lot are still stubbornly staying behind and even investing in the construction of luxury apartments.
