FoodRe: Nigerians And Jollof - Representing Nairaland With My Nigerian Jollof In Canada by Swiftgrp: 5:45pm On Nov 15, 2023
myike2:
So my friends and I decided to utilize the nice weather (summer), before winter comes. We didn’t fail to put our Nigerian jollof on the map, and some white folks came over to our boat to have a taste. Nigerian jollof is second to none grin
That's an awesome view... I like the way y'all were robustly repping the Nigerian Jollof without regrets. Nice thread.
TravelRe: Nigerian Vs Canadian Passport by Swiftgrp: 5:40pm On Nov 15, 2023
myike2:
So, my dear Nairaland fam, something funny happened while I was preparing for my trip to Nigeria.
Since I left Nigeria in 2013, I go back to visit each year, but haven’t visited since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So in other words, I haven’t travelled with my Canadian passport since I became a Canadian. I told myself I have to travel this year. In preparation for my trip, with the excitement of disvirgining my new passport, I thought it wise to go through the passport and familiarize myself with it, as I never gave it a critical look since I got it. That was when several lightbulb moments occurred.
I realized a lot of things I wasn’t expecting to see on my Canadian passport, due to the nonsense and stigma I’ve been living with for years, travelling with my Nigerian passport.

First, the first page of the Nigerian passport starts with:”These are to request and require in the name of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria….”, while the first page of the Canadian passport starts with:” The minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada requests, in the name of Her Majesty the Queen…” There were no punctuation in the Nigerian passport. It even says “allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance”, while the Canadian one says “allow the bearer to pass freely, without delay or hindrance.” I’m not a legal practitioner and I’m not sure about the difference between “without let” and “without delay”, but I’d rather have a passport that says “without delay” grin

Secondly, while the last page of the Nigerian passport gives you a CAUTION message, the last page of the Canadian passport gives you vital information such as how to get free travel advice and warnings for every country in the world before you visit, where to sign up to enable the Canadian authorities to contact you in case of an emergency, and how to reach the Canadian government should you be stranded or require immediate assistance while oversees.

Travelling with a blue passport accords you an indescribable respect at the airport or wherever. Previously whenever I’m travelling with my stup1d green passport, it’s either they subject me to a secondary search and call it a random search, or they delay you just by virtue of the fact that you’ve got a green passport, or they spend 15mins looking at the passport, as if they are trying to uncover a fraud on the passport. The stigma was so bad that I even had to go buy a Canadian passport cover for my Nigerian passport, just to help prevent the numerous cases where people tactfully shift away from me at the airport the moment they spot my green passport.

My prayer is for all the industrious Nigerian youths to legitimately find a way out of that geographic location called Nigeria. Let’s leave the country alone for those old politicians who I have met in power since I was born, yet till date, they keep saying the youths are the leaders of tomorrow!
Bump.
Very insightful.
FoodRe: “yorubas Cook Jollof Rice Better Than Igbos” - Nigerian Man Says by Swiftgrp: 5:30pm On Nov 15, 2023
Priscy01:
A social media strategist, identified as Olumide Glowville who went viral after he publicly proposed to his girlfriend on the street they met five years ago, is making waves of Facebook due to a post he shared.

According to Olumide, the Yoruba tribe cooks even more better jollof rice than the Igbos.

Read his post below;
“Please tell my igbo friends that when it comes to jollof, it’s better left to Yorubas. This tomato rice they cook is not jollof rice! ”

Indeed... The Yoruba-styled smoky party Jollof rice is lit, and loved by not just Nigerians and expats, but even Asian and European-American folks in the U.S., UK, etc. They keep asking for more. Did you know that Dating does not mean you are in a Relationship ? Should you be asking for your rent on a second date ? and then complain that you are wanted for your body only ? that's because you did not connect on a deeper level. Should you visit strangers at home in the name of dating ?? This makes you very very vulnerable and you should go on a proper date instead if you love and respect yourself enough.

Watch this episode before you commit to a stranger.

The estranged wife of the footballer Odion Ighalo regarding his unfaithfulness to her that he even slept with a famous Big brother naija star broke the Internet today.

What really baffled me were comments from people with almost 99 percent in support of Odion Ighalo.

Alot of Nigerians will never take side against a Nigerian celebrity in sports, music or other ventures as the case may be.

It's now like a norm.

For example you come out and say Burna boy stop your weed smoking as you are influencing a lot of youths following you. The backlash you will receive for that stament may even make you deactivate your account.
It's terrible.
She had better be right about her allegations against the BBN female participant otherwise she can get sued... From the pic attached, it seems she's referring to that Oguta gal named Uriel Oputa.

But seriously, laws mandating men to take care of their biological love children have to be enforced. Some guys will have the money but will deliberately refuse to take care of the baby just to get back at, or punish the young mother of the child. Once a DNA paternity test confirms you're the father, you have to step up to the plate. Period.

True that.

That's why a global digital trail or database of rapists and criminals is needed. Sharing of information is key on a global scale is key. Background checks are important more than ever in the history of mankind.

James Ibori was involved in shoplifting in the UK back in the 1990s before he got the connect to that dark goggled military dictator which subsequently made him rich. If there was a digital trail or sharing of criminal record from a central database, Ibori wouldn't have become the Governor of Delta State.

In any event, it was his conviction by a UK court that enabled many folks to know that he had been involved in shoplifting back in the day.

That's a uniquely intense video... "Hausanglish" hip-hop from a female Kaduna-based rapper. She can slow down a bit though so as to convey her messages better...,she raps a lil too fast.

Classiq and MI Abaga are still the two Northern-born male rap Gods that I respect in the Nigerian rap genre. As an OG with mad luv for rap music from the early years of evolution of LLCool J, Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe Dee, Heavy D, ICE T, and Hammer... I say, "bow down for Northern rap."

The first time I heard Classiq's songs, I got instantly attracted to them. Same too with MI.

Arewa Female Rappers
Rapping is a popular form of music in Arewa, but it is not very common for females to rap. Most of the hip-hop artists in the region are males, such as DJ AB, Morell, Classiq, Deezell, and others. However, there are some Arewa female rappers who have made their mark in the northern Nigerian hip-hop scene. Here are some of them:

Haddy Rappia

Haddy Rappia is a female rapper from Kaduna who started rapping at the age of 17. Her real name is Hadiza Ya’u and she specializes in the hip-hop genre of ‘Gambara’, which is similar to street rap or diss tracks. She has released several songs, such as ‘No Be Like You’, ‘Bounce’, and ‘Dey Dey’. She is also known for her collaborations with other artists, such as DJ Cee, Zlatan, and Naira Marley.

Princess Mufeedah
One of the best Arewa female rappers from Nigeria who has made a name for herself is Princess Mufeedah. She was born in Maiduguri but moved to Abuja when she was young. She studied at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and started rapping when she was 16. Mufeedah won the CAFE award for the most promising Arewa female hip-hop artist in 2016/17.

Princess Mufeedah is known for her fast and witty lyrics, as well as her catchy beats and melodies. Some of her popular songs are ‘Sixteen’, ‘Hot Spot’, ‘Leg Chain’, ‘Ruwan Jiki’, ‘Ji Mana’, and ‘Baza Freestyle’. Mufeedah also sings in English, which is rare among Nigerian rappers. Her biggest influence is Nicki Minaj, whom she admires for her style and skills.

Princess Mufeedah is not only a rapper but also an actress. She played the role of Salma in the hit series Kwana Casa’in, which aired on Arewa 24. The series is a comedy-drama that follows the lives of four friends who live together in Abuja.

Ilorin and New Bussa in Niger state
Was the catfish grown or got from an aquaculture farm or was it sourced by the seller from River Niger since you are very close to that river?

It's usually people who live in metropolitan and cosmopolitan cities in Nigeria that go about screaming online and offline that food is expensive, while those who live in towns or areas close to food sources are living quite well. Those few folks who are smart in the big cities have been in touch with their relatives in the smaller towns in Ekiti, Osun, Kwara, Kogi, etc, to send cheaper food items in bulk to them in the big cities since the pre and post-recession era. The middle-men will continue to make the big city life a hell for many.

Even in a place such as Lagos State, there are usually huge discrepancies between prices of food items being sold on Lagos Mainland and the Lagos Islands of Victoria Island, Ikoyi Island, and the Lekki Peninsula. Some residents of these areas usually visit the Lagos Mainland area to get cheaper food items instead of paying huge sums for items in the Lekki Peninsula areas close to Lekki Phases 1 and 2.

Even when Buhari was a president, most Northerners suffered and refused to question the system.

The point is, leadership in Nigeria isn't about tribe but about self-interest. But would readily make use of tribe and region when seeking for votes.

When you vote incompetence, you suffer it, irrespective of who you voted.

When Seun Tinubu used the airforce1 , he's reaping what he worked for. When you suffer as a citizen, you're equally suffering from what you planted as a leader.

2.The highest votes for Tinubu was not even from yorubas but from hausa Fulanïs
3.Anambra that has had a taste of Peter OBI is not different from other worst states in the country.

I got to know much later from two posters on this thread that Herbert Wigwe had already started constructing his University in his home town at Isiokpo, near Port Harcourt as far back as 2021... so that is gratifying.

The key is to creatively give back to ones immediate community by building world-class high schools, Universities, and engaging in an eclectic mix of charitable causes. Academic education/financial education/entrepreneurship, etc. are the immediate keys for leapfrogging in the New Economy of the 21st century.

Students that would graduate and start looking for paid jobs or the ones that will put what they studied in practice, creating jobs in the process, just as it's in developed countries?? What Nigeria needs is not more universities, it's aggressive industrialisation. In fact, let's even begin with the easiest—agricultural industrialization, which can turn Nigeria into a developed country within 25 years! Netherlands of 17m people makes about $79B yearly via agricultural export, that's aside the massive blue-collar millions of jobs provided to the citizens while Nigeria with so-called black gold makes meager $39B - approximately half of it. Do you think if Nigeria has a very organised national mechanised agriculture tens of millions of currently unemployed Nigerian graduates won't be working in those farms as agronomists, electrical and mechanical engineers, accountants, geneticists, animal nutritionists, IT experts, veterinarians, hydrologist, farm nurses and doctors, marine scientists, unlike the current system where the agricultural sector is handled by 90% old men and women using hoes and cutlass and who are majorly illiterates etc?? Even those who did not read agric-related courses will hop in, because of the avalanche of jobs in the sector. And the prosperity from that sector would then trickle down into other industrial sectors such as steel, shipbuilding, car, electronics manufacturing, etc. This is how countries such as the USA, China, Malaysia became what they are today!
Your insights here are hugely spot-on.
The low-hanging fruits and value-addition in the agribusiness chain are key in order for Nigeria to surpass the Netherlands which uses the latest modern research findings and technologies to leapfrog in the agribusiness chain.

Wigwe University Debunks Issuing Admission Offers for the 2023/2024 Academic Session

The proprietors of Wigwe University have debunked issuing admission offers to students for the 2023/2024 academic session set to commence in September. In a press statement issued on Friday, August 25, 2023, the institution stated that they have received reports of unauthorized offers going out to students and that the public should be wary of them.

“We would like to address recent reports regarding unauthorized admission offers for the upcoming 2023/2024 academic session as unsuspecting citizens have been receiving offers of admission purportedly from Wigwe University for this academic year.”

“We want to unequivocally state that Wigwe University has not initiated, and will not initiate, any form of enrolment for the 2023/2024 academic session. Our official admission process will commence exclusively in preparation for the 2024/2025 academic session.”

“We take this opportunity to caution the public against any misleading information and urge all prospective students to exercise caution and verify details from credible sources. All official communications related to enrolment and employment opportunities at Wigwe University will be exclusively conveyed through our official website: (http://www.wigweuniversity.edu.ng),” the statement read.

Yes thanks for the info about the Uni and Herbert's Isiokpo hometown... His professional working life is majorly in Lagos State so that's why I said Herbert Wigwe is a "Lagos big dude" (or top gun). He used to work for the then new generation bank called GTB which was co-founded back in the 1990s by Fola Adeola and Tayo Aderinokun.

Herbert then left GTB to co-found another new generation bank called Access Bank with Aigboje Aig-Imokhuede thereby sealing their names in the sands of time among the modern banking pioneers. They brought that iconic GTB work ethics into Access Bank operations. These guys have a lot of international and local investments made from their banking assets running into millions of USD.

Thank you for giving me the latest update. Yes his hometown is Isiokpo. I was trying to wrack my brain to remember his town but I remember Herbert's father mentioning in that timeless Sunday Punch interview that his hometown is near Port Harcourt.

What a big surprise, but it's good to know that the construction of the Uni is at an advanced stage not at a foundation level. I once worked at a multinational in PH from the 1990s so I'm always glad when I get to hear positive developments happening there and besides the Ikwerre folks and indeed Rivers indigenes are likeable folks.

We're looking forward to seeing world-class education and entrepreneurship being taught in the Uni.
