As of 1870 (when Jaja an Ijawnized former slave originally sold by his kinsfolk from Amaigbo in Imo, fled from Bonny Island with some of his men to escape being killed by more powerfully armed rivals in Bonny, but fortunately some of his European friends came to his aid and saved him and his team) what we call Opobo was actually called Ikot Abasi in Ibibioland. Opobo was neither Ijaw nor Ibo but fully Ibibioland! The modern Opobo you see today has ancestries from Ibibio, Ijaw, and Ibo mixed.

The Ijaws had elaborate initiation ceremonies that they usually did for some of their freed slaves to convert them to Ijaws (and that is what happened to all the slaves (Ibos and others) who were brought by the Aros and Abams from the interior Ibo tribes or other ethnic groups). The Ijaws were the middlemen in Bonny Island and other slave export areas. The Ibibios, Efiks, etc, also acted as middlemen in the slave trade.

Back to Opobo, many years ago, I first read advanced archival historical books written by Europeans NOT the doctored online propaganda we see today indicating that the Ibibios gave Jaja some of their land which was part of Ikot Abasi to stay but he later became very brutal and started challenging and preventing the interior tribes along the river from engaging in the lucrative trading with the white guys and these caused wars such as the Ikot Udo Wars between Jaja and other ethnicities such as the Annangs, Ibibios, and Ngwas.

The British (who refered to Jaja as a middlemen Chief NOT as a King from a royal family and infact Ijaw custom does NOT allow freed slaves like Jaja or freeborns to become kings or Amayanabos. So how he ended up being called a king in the Nigerian Social Studies books we read decades back is very dubious), also got tired of his arrogance and brutal killings and beheadings of rival ethnicities that they finally got rid of him in 1887. After all it was his British trader friends who rescued him from the onslaught of Bonny warriors otherwise, he would have been killed as of 1870!

Like someone said, the thread is entertaining and enlightening as well. I am a non ibo but due to the nature of my work, I have been opportuned to be in different parts of southern Nigeria. The Op said andoni people are ijaws to buy I have seen some andonis with ibo names like uche secondus of pdp. I have seen some people of eastern obolo in akwaibom state who are andonis bear ibo names, and I think they are under the ijaw socio cultural group. And we have the ijaws in ondo state(Ilaje) who speak Yoruba too. I think the ijaws are a people with interesting history, would love to know more about them

Point of correction.

The Ilaje-Yoruba folks who fully occupy the Atlantic coastline of Ondo State which has rich onshore and offshore oil and gas resources are not Ijaws.

You probably meant to refer to the Arogbo Ijaws who migrated for fishing purposes from the Bayelsa/Delta States axis to stay near the Apoi. The Apoi from where Omoyele Sowore (who is from Kiribo in Ese Odo LGA) hails from claim a direct Ile Ife descent from their progenitors who went on an expedition centuries back and lost their way so had to settle in the modern Bayelsa State area before finally coming back with descendants to Yorubaland and their current location.

The Apoi folks essentially speak Yoruba language and bear Yoruba names and their Kings bear the Oba title like other parts of Yorubaland. But being that they returned from the Bayelsa area, they have Ijoid influences too. So it is the Arogbo who speak Ijaw (but settled near the Apoi) as later day fishing migrants that you meant to refer to NOT the Ilaje-Yoruba folks who are pure Yorubas.

I was able to glean these facts from many online and offline sources years back so it is near-accurate.

Ijaw with 11 Lgas, out of 23 Lgas are the largest Rivers State Tribe.
Since democracy, only Ijaw have been Deputies for 24 years and now, we are coming as Governor in 2 days time. Ijaw occupy half of Rivers State while other tribes share half.

Ogoni have 4 LGAS.

The Ijaw 11 LGAs are Asari Toru, Akuku Toru, Bonny, Degema, Okrika, Ogu/Bolo, Port Harcourt South, Opobo/Nkoro, Abua/Odual, Andoni, Ahoada West.

These are the ones under all Ijaw Social Cultural Organizations and sign Ijaw accord.

Note; There is no particular language called Ijaw. Ijaw is an association of different groups related by same Ancestry that come together as one.

Hmmmmm. Well I don't know alot but I know this much.
There was a time when Igbo artists and their music ruled but they themselves (Igbo artists ), were unable to stand the test of time. By now who wants to be singing 'kporokotom kpom kpom' but back then, this flavour song, for those of you who know the name (Cause I never knew the name) was a party banger. So were the likes of P Square's Alinco (if that's the name) and others. But time changed all that.
You want to know how people like Olamide, Davido, Burna Boy, Wizkid have been able to remain on top and relevant all these years. It's simple, they upgraded their skill set. Take a listen to Davido's 'Dami Duro' and compare it with 'Unavaible' from the his recent album 'Timeless' the difference is clear. It's still the same artiste but he upgraded. Or is it someone like Burna Boy, Wizkid just name any prominent Nigerian artiste today that has been around for a long time in the music industry, there is a big difference between their old songs and their recent ones. It is all about being up to date with music demand. Like I don't think we will ever get tired of the amapiano genre. But there are still artists not into amapiano that are still very successful with their own music. There's Rema, Ckay, Omah Lay amongst others. The Igbo artists you mentioned when last dem release song talkless of say dem give us the vibe we are looking for. Kcee release 'Ojapiano', Kolaboy don release 'Kolapiano vol. 1 and 2', Okay. When last did we get a song from flavor or even P Square while other artists are busy bombarding the music market with masterpieces. I myself has been a huge fan of rema since 'Ginger Me' but when I heard 'Sungba' by Asake back in 2021 I loved it. I later discovered he had a song (lady) back in 2016 but had not had a breakthrough ever since. What does that show, Improvement. Now overseas dem chop am like soya, everybody don turn disciple.
Long story short, as Davido release, Wizkid go release and so will kizz Daniel, Burna Boy and so will many other YOURBA MUSICIANS but how many IGBO MUSICIANS release song wey don blow your mind this season. Kcee and Kolaboy both release their own piano (we sef wan release my own: Eddipiano ) but na Kcee's ojapiano blow, Ckay gave us 'Nwayi' and did 'Hallelujah' with Blaqbonezmake another Igbo artist release song wey make sense we nor see. Meanwhile Olamide and Asake gave us Amapiano and New Religion with the latter releasing an album shortly after, Davido's Timeless album was already out way before, Burna Boy with sitting on top of the world, Kizz Daniel with shuperu, bella shmurda release song, Seyi Vibez nor dey let one song blow finish him go release another one (Song Release Machine ) Where are the Igbo Musicians?

Ijaw is a language. It's called Izon and it has related languages we call Ijoid language like Kalabari, Okirika Biseni, Nembe languages.

But Abua-Odual is not an Ijaw or Ijoid language.
You notice this easily once you look at the numbers from 1-10 in Abua and Ijaw/Ijoid Languages.
They have no single link! Not one similarity.
So how is Abua/Odual Ijaw?

You obviously not an Igbo speaker.
If you are, you will know that Izzi, Ezza and Ikwo are typical Igbo dialects. The numbers 1-10 is same as in central Igbo, the syntax and words are same.
Only difference is intonation. Ebonyi dialects are highly tonal. Linguists studied Ezza dialect and found out it has mutual intelligibility score of 90% with far away Owerri dialect. I can imagine that the mutual intelligibility between Ezza and Nkanu will be as far as 97% as they are neighbors.

The Igbo dialects are mutually intelligible in a continum, meaning the closer the dialects speakers are to each other geographically, the more the intelligibility and vice versa.
This isn't same with Epie-Attisa, Abua-Odual, Abureni and Izon.
They totally mutually unintelligible, the number system are unrelated and words for basic things are not same too.

Isoko, Urhobo and co all speak an Edoid language, so their migration from Bini story is legit! Because Bini speaks an Edoid language too.
Language is the greatest pointer of origin.
Also Epie-Attisa in Bayelsa, Engenni in far away Rivers State have histories of Bini origin and you see this in the fact that the people despite being surrounded by Ijoid speakers,speak an Edoid language as mother tongue!

In Delta State, Odiani communities in Aniocha have history of migrants from Owo Division of Ondo and we see that in the fact that some of them speak a Yoruboid language as mother tongue.
Ebu in same Aniocha area has history of migrants from Igala and the people speak Igala dialect as mother tongue.
Oza nogogo people in Agbor has history of migrants from Edo, and they speak an Edoid language as mother tongue.
These things are rational and not hard to figure except when one want to indulge in self delusion.
A people language will always reflect where the overwhelming population of the people originated from. It's that simple. Anything else is mere fantasy and wishful thinking.

Bini origin claimants in Oguta are no different from Jewish origin claimants in Aguleri and environment.
They are all clownish wishful dreamers. No one, not even themselves, take themselves serious.
We all know they are all suffering from inferiority complex and we are ever ready to welcome all of them back to earth when they are done.
Any claim by Igbo speaking group that traces their origin to smaller non Igbo speaking groups outside Igboland is pure fallacy and wishful thinking stories cobbled by lying ancestors suffering from inferiority complex.
No Anthropologist will take such serious.

Yes! Aboh couldn't have originated from Bini and not be speaking an Edoid dialect as mother tongue. It's impossible! If you say a few founding fathers of Aboh, maybe the rulling class are of Bini origin, maybe I can reluctantly agree, but there is no denying the fact that overwhelming (at least 90%) of people in Aboh today are originated from Igbo speaking ancestors which is why the language of Aboh stayed Igbo. This is common sense.

Introduce weigh bridges/stations across the country so that drivers carrying above their designated carrying capacities will pay an instant penalty on the spot ,so that this revenue will be used to service these kind of damage when they arise.

This is not about ethnicity or exclusive to any ethnicity. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, there was a spike in the number of Anambra father's having incestuous rape or forceful sex with their biological daughters with over 80 cases reported and a spike in reported domestic violence. These were reported in major newspapers in Nigeria and are still accessible online by clicking the link below:

A simple Googling would bring up all these crimes you listed being committed in massive numbers in your Ibo ethnic home region, and in other parts of Nigeria. Don't exclusively demonize another ethnicity. Period.

Let me come into your convo with the other guy.

The colonial administrative CAPITAL of Nigeria from 1914 to 1991[77 years] was LAGOS ISLAND and NOT Lagos State. The British LEFT in 1960 so how did the British build Lagos State which only came into existence on May 27th, 1967? This is how a lot of the younger ones who embarassingly don't pay attention to details fail their history examinations or conversations. NO person of the older generation right up to those born in the 1970s would keep make this mistake of referring to Lagos State as the former capital because Lagos State which has many towns is different from the island-city of Lagos Island. Lagos Island is less than 2 percent [2%] of the current landmass of the much bigger Lagos State which Governor Tinubu was in charge of and laid a LONG-TERM MASTER PLAN for other Lagos State Governors to follow to the letter. [Enugu city is the current capital of Enugu State and Enugu city is also different from the larger Enugu State which has many other towns].

Lagos State came into existence for the very first time on May 27th, 1967 among 12 new states that General Yakubu Gowon's government created for the indigenes after due consultations. Chief Harold Dappa-Biriye [the father of Ijaw nationalism from Bonny Island] and other Rivers State leaders of thought like Ken Saro-Wiwa [the Ogoni and Nigerian icon] had several meetings with Gowon from 1966 to 1967 on the importance of creating new states and Gowon accepted their demands. Is it too difficult for some people to GRASP this simple fact of political history?

Second, before Tinubu came onboard, Lagos State was in a complete shambles or decay in terms of infrastructure that the brutal Military governance had ruined! Yes from 1999 to 2007 when he was Governor, Tinubu and his team laid the foundation for the renewal of Lagos State and increased the IGR from the trash that it was to becoming the biggest in the whole of Nigeria by using his accounting background thanks to OBJs withholding of Lagos State's Federal allocations for months. At the end of the day, Lagos State ended up making MORE yearly IGR than the so-called Federal allocations. When Fashola took over from Tinubu, he proudly stated that without the annoying Federal allocations, Lagos State can SURVIVE on it's own. These are the FACTS that some of us witnessed before leaving Nigeria years back to become Diasporans while coming back on regular visits.

The LONG-TERM MASTER PLAN of Lagos State was put in place by Tinubu and his dynamic economic team thereby leading to many legacy project being sited in Lagos State such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port, expansion of the Lekki Peninsula corridor, the blue and red rail lines, the Lekki Export Free Trade Zone, etc, all of which the then Governor Tinubu initiated and were completed according to the LONG-TERM MASTER PLAN of Lagos State.

The major problem which Lagos State faces has to do with the migration of people from their badly run states to overcrowd Lagos and indeed Port Harcourt, Abuja, and Kano are experiencing the inflow of WAR and ECONOMIC MIGRANTS thereby putting pressure on facilities and this is why it seems Lagos is regressing in some areas but they are doing their best so they are NOT accused of kicking fellow Nigerians out.

There are many non-Rivers indigenes living and working in Rivers State or PH to be precise who speak all the indigenous languages in that state, so take note. Many Yoruba, Edo, Ibibio folks, etc, speak fluent indigenous Rivers State languages and dialects. It doesn't mean they are indigenous to Rivers State. Fubara is classified as a Kalabari-Ijaw dude.

This is craaazy! Who goes on a spending spree after being credited with $10.4 million in her bank account? Who does that?!

She and her male accomplice could in a worse-case-scenario have taken $50,000 or less from the total money to invest in any profitable enterprise in the UK or her home country and quickly return the money. Apparently, a lot of these folks would be better off living in smaller states or towns instead of pretending to be big boys and babes in Lagos, Abuja, and PH, etc, because food and the total cost of living are way cheaper in those locations.

I earlier last week read your insightful thread about fonio and became curious to know more about it. If it's more expensive than rice in Abuja like has already been stated here, then other cosmopolitan cities such as Lagos and PH wholesale/retail prices would be worse.

Globally though folks are engaging in cost-cutting measures because of inflation and hyperinflation by looking for cheaper alternatives or substitutes for food types, raw materials, etc, without reducing quality... That's the way to go because times like these bring about innovations.

Acha is way more expensive, I asked for the price and was told it's 2500 for one mudu here in Abuja.

I just knew it. Once demand skyrockets, greedy middlemen kick in and start to hoard and increase prices of items. Very predictable.
