EIGHT ABEOKUTA-BASED WRITERS TO HEADLINE READ NIGERIA PROJECT’S FOURTH SENSITIZATION READING


Read Nigeria Project, a nationwide chain of reading events administered by Adwinsa Publications (Gh) Ltd and Abeokuta Book Club has set aside 13th day of August, 2022 to host eight Abeokuta-based writers, Darasimi Adeoye, Demola Ayomide Miracle, Lade Ajayi, Joseph Oluwayemi, Kolapo Mariam, Stephen Ezekiel, Esther Ogunsakin and Quadri Yahya in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

A statement issued by the Coordinator and Secretary of the club, Darasimi Adeoye and Kolapo Mariam said the fourth phase of the sensitization reading would take place at AAC Secretariat, beside NIPCO Filling Station, along MKO Abiola Way, Abeokuta, Ogun State by 12PM prompt.

Read Nigeria Project is a nationwide chain of events administered by Adwinsa Publications (Gh) Ltd and Abeokuta Book Club. It is a project devoted for readers and lovers of books across Nigeria to celebrate and honour some selected important personalities who have contributed meaningfully to the learning and reading culture of the country.

The project also hopes to promote book reading through different events like book bee, quiz contests and other mediums across the country irrespective of tribe, color, sect, age, religion and gender.

Adwinsa Publications was established in March of 1977 in Madina, a suberb of Accra, the capital of Ghana in West Africa. The young business at the time began in the CEO’s house. During the late 1980’s Adwinsa went from a small location to Accra Newtown, also in the Capital City. During this time we also embraced “desktop publishing” (which was also an industry in its infancy) as well as commercial offset printing. From the year 2000 to 2014, we have added multiple high speed printing machines that propelled us into a new level of high-quality offset printing. We also built and expanded our services by putting up an office complex in Agbobga in Accra, Ghana.

The publishing firm is considered experts in Junior and Senior High school syllabus based text books in Ghana. The firm focuses on books for the Basic, secondary and tertiary institutions that have been largely acknowledged locally by students, parents, governments and the international community. As a family-owned company, one of Adwinsa Publications’ strengths is its focus on the family and its desire to see families succeed in education, especially in the long term development of every child in the family.

Abeokuta Book Club is an initiative of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW). It was founded in 2011 by SYNW in order to contribute its own quota to the growth and development of Reading Culture in Ogun State.

The Abeokuta Book Club consists of a group of people who meet periodically to discuss the book they have read and exchange those books. Club members encourage each other and learn to read with a critical mind, articulating their opinions about a particular book with others. Certain types of books not available or read receive attention through the book club.

DARASIMI ADEOYE


Darasimi Adeoye is a content creator, public speaker and a writer. She is a graduate from Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, where she studied English/ political science. She is currently running her degree program at the University of Ibadan, where she is studying English Education. Darasimi is a lover of books. She is a passionate writer and story writer, and most importantly a teacher.


LADE AJAYI


Lade Ajayi is an educator, reader and writer. She hails from Badagry, Lagos State in Nigeria. A graduate of Yoruba Language from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, she writes in both Yoruba and English Languages and in all genres.


KOLAPO MARIAM


Kolapo Mariam is a Wildlife Management graduate from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She uses her writing to effectively express and enlighten through the use of inspiration to help people reflect, understand, and learn about life and it's phenomenal. She is a pencil artist and textile designer who specializes in portraiture, Adore and Batik making. She loves to read autobiographies, biographies, and memoirs because they serve as a means of seeing other people's world through their experiences. She has read a lot of books authored by Maya Angelou. I know why the caged bird sings, Philip Knight; Shoe Dog, Oprah Winfrey; What I Know for sure, Malcolm Gladwell; Outliers, Tara Westover; Educated, Lisa Brennan Jobs, Larry Sloman and Mike Tyson; Undistributed Truth, Maya Must; A woman makes a plan and many more. One of her most cherished goals as a writer is to author an authobiography.


ESTHER OGUNSAKIN


Esther Ogunsakin is a Christian and a budding writer| content editor and also event planner. She is a graduate of English Studies at the Premier University, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State. She specialises in Morphology, Syntax and Grammar in her editing skills.

She possesses the capacity to solve problems and also can manage significant workloads. Her strength is to make research to proffer solutions to mankind through her writing. She is the CEO of Divine Events. She loves to bake and decorate event locations to make the event a remarkable one for her clients.

Esther Ogunsakin started writing before she gained admission to University in the year 2015. She sees writing as a means to reach out to humans all over the world. She has written copious academic theses, term papers and Christian articles with a successful outcome.

In the year 2021, she started to develop an interest in content editing and proofreading skills. She believes that the beauty of every content is to be free of errors. Within the short period, she has edited and proofread a few Christian and non-fictional manuscripts. Though, she's working as a volunteer content editor and proofreader.

Esther Ogunsakin is still growing and learning more in this her career and she believes she will reach her height in this field very soon by the grace of God.


ADEMOLA AYOMIDE MIRACLE


Ademola Ayomide Miracle is a writer, nutripreneur and a public speaker.

He is an alumnus of Federal Polytechnic, Ede where he earned a diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics, he is currently a final year student of Federal university of Agriculture, Abeokuta, serving as the president of the department.

Ayomide is affiliated to many reputable organisations such as Mohammed Bin Rashid University Of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dubai, Red Cross Society, Junior Chamber International (JCI), ENACTUS, TEDx, ISERH, Nutrition Gladiators, Hult Prize, YALI, Society of Young Nigerian Writers, National Society of Campus Writers, Green Academy, Microsoft Agro-tech among others.
As a writer he has written two books, several articles, and has featured in anthologies both as a contributor and an editor.

He is a brilliant young man who has served in several leadership roles in secular and religious settings and he is committed to making Nigeria and the world in general a better place.


JOSEPH O. OLUWAYOMI


Joseph O. Oluwayomi is a Nigerian writer; his works had appeared or are forthcoming on: Poemify Magazine, Brittle Paper, SpringNG, Art Lounge Journal, and elsewhere. He is an aspiring Novel writer. Abeokuta Book Club has expressed her readiness to host the fourth phase of the Read Nigeria Project.


Read Nigeria Project, a nationwide chain of reading events administered by Adwinsa Publications (Gh) Ltd has set aside Saturday 13th day of August, 2022 to host eight Abeokuta-based writers, Darasimi Adeoye, Demola Ayomide Miracle, Lade Ajayi, Joseph Oluwayemi, Kolapo Mariam, Stephen Ezekiel, Esther Ogunsakin and Quadri Yahya in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

The National Executive Council of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has released programme of event and schedule of activities for the 41st International Convention.


In a statement officially issued by ANA National Secretary, Maik Ortserga said Abuja is set to hold Nigeria’s biggest international Convention of Writers come October this year.

ISEYIN BOOK CLUB EXPRESSES DEEP SADNESS OVER ASEYIN'S DEATH

Iseyin Book Club has expressed grief over the death of His Royal Highness, Oba Dr. Abdul Ganiyy Adekunle Salaudeen Oloogunebi Ajinese.

Iseyin Book Club in a statement of condolence signed by the Coordinator of the Club, Yusuf Opeere said the demise of the traditional ruler at this time was indeed a great loss not only to the Iseyin traditional council but to the people and government of Oyo state as well as Nigeria at large.

Iseyin Book Club described the late Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Dr. Abdul Ganiyy Adekunle Salaudeen Oloogunebi Ajinese as a highly respected monarch whose 15-year reign on the throne helped in promoting unity and peace in Iseyin land as well as attracting significant development and progress to his people.

The Club through the statement praised the contributions of the royal father to the peaceful coexistence and socio-economic development of Iseyinland and the state, which it said endeared the late monarch to his subjects and all those who related with him.

The club prayed that God would comfort the family, friends and subjects of the departed royal father.

Oluwakemi Ifedoyin is a Medical student passionate about finding adequate solutions to social issues in my community.

In March, She published her first book which focuses on helping students who are transitioning from high school to college get exposed to the possible shortcomings that they might face and provide suggestions on how to overcome them.

So far,she has been able to distribute over 3000 copies to about 20 schools and tutorials in South west Nigeria.

She has been invited to schools to share my experience about it and advise the students personally. She has addressed more than 5,000 students from most universities and tutorials in South west, Nigeria.

Currently, she is working on a podcast that addresses the concerns that these sophomore students face.

Kola Akintola is an artist of rare ingenuity, his perspective is as wide as his gaze on each of his works is intense. He possesses an especial capacity to make art works from common and unlikely things.


His works serve as an experiment to understand the delicate intersection between 'art and life', 'art and anatomy', 'form and media'.


He believes that this interesting conceptualization of form and media arose from his attempt to blend his initial training in Human Kinetics dealing with real forms with his subsequent training as an artist dealing with "imaging". This is 'imaging' not as in photography but as in the faucouldian frame of things, in nature and in life things exist in themselves at particular times and in particular spaces as regimes of truth. Almost as isolates.


Kola's latest path-breaking skill is found in his new form / style which he called "Vein Painting". This is an inventive and brilliant use of organic materials laid on a background which throws it out in relief such that lines of fibre are used to give imaginative meaning to form.


It is a stylistic as well as technical improvement on his use of organic fibre.


Kola Akintola's art works have become academic studies in some universities in Nigeria and Colorado university in the United States of America.


He has had several art workshops and exhibitions around the world, and represented Nigeria at some international art discusses in the West Coasts of Africa.


He runs an art studio cum art gallery and he is the Proprietor of "Institute Of Art Technology here in Ibadan, as an outlet to training the younger ones in proper artistic acquisition.


He is always poised to saying "Everybody is an artist, but not every artist can become a great one, but a great one can come from anywhere"

AKINTOLA, ADETAYO TO HEADLINE SECOND EDITION OF BUSARI AGBOLADE MEMORIAL LECTURE

Ibadan Book Club (IBC) in conjunction with AZA Artists and Writers Movement have set aside 30th day of July, 2022 to host two Ibadan based Artist and Writer, Mr. Kola Akintola and Mr. Gbenga Adetayo in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
A statement issued by both the Coordinator and Secretary of the club, Ayobami Odunyemi and Ayoade Hassanat said the event would take place at the Oyo State Library Board, Opposite Cocoa House, Ibadan by 11AM.
The July book reading also coincides with the club’s annual Busari Agbolade Memorial Lecture (second edition).
The Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Mr. Kola Akintola on the topic: “The Importance of Drawing and Painting in Writing”. Also Mr. Gbenga Adetayo will deliver a short talk on “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness: Making a Success of the Business of Life”.

Gbenga Adetayo is a visionary, a thinker and an investor. He is also the founder and CEO of MindScape Media Co. Ltd., who are the publishers of an online business and investment magazine called Terraculum magazine. The firm is based in Ibadan. Adetayo is deeply passionate about capitalism, but not the zero-sum game variety that is predicated on the wealth of the few having to derive from the toil of the many. He is married to a Senegalese woman and together they have two boys. Mr. Gbenga Adetayo also has a stepson.


Gbenga Adetayo was born on August 31, 1967 to the family of Mr. Joseph Adebayo Adetayo and Mrs. Florence Oluwadamilare Adetayo. His father is a descendant of the Owa Ajimoko ruling house of Ilesa, while his mother hails from Okitipupa. Gbenga’s father worked with the defunct Tate & Lyle Nigeria Plc. for 18 years where he rose to the position of Labour Manager before he was retrenched in 1983.

From a very early age, Gbenga Adetayo had the dream of starting a company and building it to become a multi-national, multi-divisional behemoth and that really gave a driving impetus to his outlook on life. What that did was to give his mind a sense of a higher purpose in life; giving it focus and considering life as a journey one has to undertake with all seriousness and with the mindset of accomplishing great things in the time one has to spend on earth. In the course of his educational career, he came under certain influences and cues that acted as guideposts to lead him in the direction of his dreams. For example, he started reading The Economist avidly from the age of twelve. He had also read all the story books in the school library by the time he got to class two in secondary school.


On his education, Gbenga Adetayo was educated at the Cherubim & Seraphim College, Ilorin and the University of Ilorin, where he majored in geology with a minor in physics. Beyond the honours degree which the university awarded him in 1985, he received a well-rounded education from the experience since he deliberately set out to open his mind widely to assimilate and internalize knowledge in their different branches as obtainable in the university. In the course of his development, he gravitated towards becoming more of a thinker than a doer, which dampened down the propensity to venality in his character.


Gbenga Adetayo minded to use the agency of that intellect to advance the cause of humanity by lifting people up everywhere: while in the pursuit of his personal interests, to also advance the interests of the wider society and that of all of humanity. For him, that really is the mark of a true capitalist. He is also minded to spread the message of the universality of certain human values; to exalt all of humanity; to treat people as people irrespective of any artificial barriers of the mind that human beings have crafted out of the unconscious ignorance of their minds to divide people and to put the vast majority of humanity down. This is the age of thinking the unthinkable and for him it is time to think differently about how we have managed our economic lives as a species.

Adetayo is completely apolitical, lacking in political skills. He has the ability for deep contemplation. His observation, reflection and engagement with the world of business, with markets, economies, the political sphere and the evolution of the human condition everywhere in the world over more than 50 years have given him a unique perspective on how capitalism should be evolving to better serve the material and spiritual interests of a greater percentage of humankind as time progresses.

Gbenga Adetayo started his working life at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, in 1988, as a Research Assistant in the Agroclimatology Department. He resigned in 1993 to start a business of his own as an IT Consultant. This he did until 1999 when he joined the service of the Nigerian Subsidiary of Saipem, the Italian oil and gas Contractor as a Senior Procurement Officer. He worked there until 2015 by which time he had risen to the position of Deputy Procurement Manager. His disengagement from Saipem was through a redundancy due to the decline in the market price of crude oil which gave rise to reduced workload in the company.


Gbenga Adetayo set up a pig farm immediately after leaving Saipem, as a prelude to what he imagined would grow to become a food company in line with his dream, but things did not work out as he had planned as his African compatriots, starting with his immediate younger brother worked hard at siphoning all the money he invested in the business.


But he remains undaunted as his journey into capitalism is a lifelong one, the journey being the destination. He has big dreams to contribute towards the bringing to life of a more benign, inclusive and more intelligent mode of capitalism that will evolve from the Western-conceived extreme short-term, zero-sum game mode. He understands capitalism deeply, starting from first principles.

PROFILE OF LATE BUSARI OLANIYI AGBOLADE


Busari Olaniyi Agbolade, a professional painter, steel fabricator was born on 13th July, 1948. He attended A.U.D Primary School, Ila Orangun from 1955-1960, L.A Secondary School, Ila Orangun from 1961-1963. He later enrolled as an apprentice under Adegoke Metal Construction Company from 1965 to 1967.

Busari Olaniyi Agbolade worked with the Niger West Construction Company, Niger Dam Authority and Uren Construction Engineering Company between 1969 and 1975. In 1976, he studied Aluminium and Copper Artistic Panel Beating under the tutelage of Yekini Agboola, an apprentice to Chief Ashiru Olatunde of Osogbo School.

He later joined the Abayomi Barber School of Thought of the University of Lagos to study painting in 1980. Elder Busari worked with the University of Lagos from 1980 and resigned his appointment in 1993 to become a full time artist.

Elder Busari Olaniyi Agbolade has participated in several exhibitions such as Barber School Exhibition sponsored by N.C.A.C in 1984, Benue State Art Exhibition – 1985, Lagos State Art Council – 1986, “ Man in Focus” exhibition by Federal Department of Culture – 1086, Exhibition of Paintings and Batiks by three Nigerian Artists in Dakar – Senegal 1987. Exhibition of Paintings, Batiks, Carvings and Ceramics by Six Nigerian Artists with 843 Studio Gallery, East New York, U.S.A from October-December 1988 Lagos State Chapter of S.N.A. Annual exhibition from 1991-2009.

IBADAN BOOK CLUB HOLDS SECOND EDITION OF BUSARI AGBOLADE MEMORIAL LECTURE ON SATURDAY, JULY 30

Ibadan Book Club in conjunction with AZA Artists and Writers Movement will hold their joint annual Busari Agbolade Memorial Lecture (second edition) in honour of one of its past Patrons and the former Chairman of the Movement, Busari Olaniyi Agbolade who passed away on the 9th of June, 2020 at the age of 72 years.


The lecture will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022.


This was contained in a statement jointly issued by Ayobami Odunayo and Gboye Abidoye, Coordinators of Ibadan Book Club and AZA Artists and Writers Movement respectively in Ibadan on Thursday.


The lecture which will hold at the Main Hall of the Oyo State Library Board by 11:00AM.


The Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Mr. Kola Akintola on the topic: “The Importance of Drawing and Painting in Writing”. Also Mr. Genga Adetayo will deliver a short talk on “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness: Making a Success of the Business of Life”.

The President of the International Writers Association (IWA), Dr. Mary Hilaire Tavenner has approved the appointment of Wole Adedoyin to oversee the newly created branch of the Association in Nigeria.

This was disclosed to newsmen via a letter signed by the Vice President of the Association, Robert J. Moore dated 18th day of March, 2022 and a membership Certificate dated 13th day of March 2022, signed by the President of the Association Dr. Mary Hilaire Tavenner.

According to the letter, Wole Adedoyin is expected to oversee and coordinate the Nigerian branch of the association.

Parts of the letter read, “Dear Wole Adedoyin, It is my honor and pleasure to formally recognize you as the President of IWA Nigeria and your group as an official chatter of the International Writers Association. We look forward to working with you on future projects and writing. As a charter member of IWA we would like to make available to you all of the benefits that being an IWA member has to offer. Wole Adedoyin is an alumnus of the Study Abroad in Lebanon (SAIL) programme, an initiative of the Wole Soyinka Foundation, Notre Dame University, Louaize and Cedars Institute, Lebanon. He is currently an ex-officio member of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) and Chairman of the Publicity Committee of the Association. Adedoyin is also the President of Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) and the immediate past National Publicity Secretary (South) of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). Before becoming the National Spokesperson of the Association, Adedoyin had served in different committees set up by various Presidents of the Association. Three of the committees are: National Teen Authorship Scheme (served as National Secretary of the Committee – 2011-2015), Young Writers Mentorship Scheme (also served as National Secretary of the Committee 2016-2019) and lastly Intellectual Property Protection and Advancement Committee (also served as its National Secretary – 2018-2019).

Adedoyin founded the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) in 2011. SYNW is an umbrella organization that was founded to promote creative writing and literary arts among writers based in Nigeria between the ages of 10 and 40. It was founded in 2010 at the former house of the Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka at the University of Ibadan. It was formerly known as the World of Poets and Literary Society.
Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) is a member of the International Authors Forum (IAF). It has also collaborated with different international organizations like Alliance Francaise (Nigeria), 100 Thousand Poets for Change (USA), Woman Scream International Poetry and Arts Festival , International Women Writing Guild and lately International Human Rights Art Festival (USA).

Adedoyin is the brain behind annual literary events like Fagunwa Day, Read Across Nigeria (RAN), National Week of Remembrance for Departed Writers (NAWRED) and the National Book Awareness Week (NABAWK). In 2011, Adedoyin organized Prof. Remi Raji @ 50 National Poetry Competition. Before serving as ANA National PRO (South), Adedoyin had served as ANA Oyo Auditor (2006-2008) and ANA Oyo PRO (2008-2010). He has published works in various literary reviews, journals and anthologies.

In 2005, Wole Adedoyin was awarded Oyo State Merit Award in Literary Arts by HE Chief Alao Akala (the the Executive Governor of Oyo State. Also in 2006, he was a recipient of Olaudah Equiano Poetry and Prose Prize, Adedoyin won the 2008 edition of ANA/Asiedu Sarpong Prize for Children Poetry and Co-Winner of the Vincent Iguanre Drama Prize.

As a content creator, Wole Adedoyin has written over 1000 articles for both Opera News and Scooper News. In March 2020, Wole Adedoyin won Opera News Hub’s Original Articles of the Week twice and also won Opera News Hub’s Original Long Read Articles of the Month (March).
On the 5th October, 2017, the Gibran National Committee in Beirut, Lebanon appointed Wole Adedoyin as the Coordinator of Gibran Khalil Gibran Society in Nigeria and Africa. Adedoyin is also the brain behind the formation of the Association of Nigerian Christian Authors and Publishers (ANCAPS) known for its annual National Christian Literature Awards.

IHRAF EXTENDS ENTRY DEADLINE FOR AFRICAN HUMAN RIGHTS SHORT STORY PRIZE TO 8TH OF AUGUST

The African Chapter of the International Human Rights Art Festival has extended the call for entries for its African Human Rights Short Story Prize to 8th of day August, 2022 to give more interested African Short Story Writers the opportunity to participate.

In a release signed by Wole Adedoyin, Director of IHRAF in Africa said the move is in response to calls by interested entrants requesting for more time to allow them to participate in the competition.

African Human Rights Short Story Prize is open to new, emerging and established short story writers. The Prize is open to submissions of work written in English by writers of any nationality or descent.


African Human Rights Short Story Prize aims to promote and support the realization of human rights in Africa. To be duly considered, Stories must have Human Rights at heart.

The stories can explore any of the following human rights themes: Freedom of Expression, Government Violations, Police Brutality, corruption, forced Eviction, terrorism, Gender Inequality, LGBT Rights, Child Labour, Child Marriage, Domestic Violence, violence and discrimination against women; child abuse; female genital mutilation, ethnic, regional, and religious discrimination, child trafficking etc.

ACPP CONDEMNS VIOLENT ATTACK OF PDP MEMBERS IN OSOGBO BY THUGS


The Alliance of Collaborating Political Parties (ACPP) under the leadership of Wole Adedoyin has condemned the violent invasion and attack on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) early this week in Osogbo.


ACPP said that they received the news of violent invasion of extended PDP Campaign train in Osogbo with shock and disbelief, warning NURTW members from the area to resist from being used as political thugs.


It would be recalled that some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were recently attacked by suspected hoodlums around Isale-Osun area of Osogbo, Osun state.


ACPP in a statement made available to newsmen in Ilesa on Wednesday, called on security agencies to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators and their likely sponsors.


“The Alliance of Collaborating Political Parties (ACPP) condemns in very strong terms this attack in which more than seventy members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were wounded.”


“It’s quite unfortunate and regrettable that some people still play undemocratic politics of thuggery in 2022. Any political party that still uses thugs and violence should be resisted by all well meaning Osun Voters and all political stakeholders must come together to combat this holistically before it degenerates to something worse.”


ACPP further called for “thorough investigation of the incident to ensure adequate actions are taken against anyone found to have overstepped his bounds.”

ADWINSA PUBLICATIONS LAUDS EMERGENCE OF DR. WALE OKEDIRAN AS PAWA SECRETARY GENERAL

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Adwinsa Publications (GH) LTD., Kwaku Oppong Amponsah, has congratulated the newly elected Secretary General of the PAN African Writers Association (PAWA), Dr. Wale Okediran.
Kwaku Oppong Amponsah described the choice of Dr. Wale Okediran as Secretary General of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) as a worthy recognition of his leadership role in steering the ship of PAWA in the last one and half years.

IBADAN BOOK CLUB CONGRATULATES CAMILLUS UKAH ON PAWA AWARD

Ibadan Book Club has joined ANA Members across the country to congratulate the current President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Camillus Ukah for bagging the “ESTEEMED PATRON OF THE ARTS AWARD” from the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) over the weekend.
Ibadan Book Club, in a statement signed by its Coordinator and Secretary, Ayobami Odunyemi and Ayoade Hassanat, noted that Camillus Ukah’s infrastructural strides and exemplary leadership in ANA are finally getting the recognition it deserves.
Recall that ANA President, Camillus Ukah was on Saturday conferred with the award by the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) at the PAWA’s International Conference which took place at the Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Nigeria between June 23 and June 25, 2022 with the theme, “Literature Since Makerere 1962: The African Writers’ Pan African Agenda for Peace Security and Cultural Development”.
Parts of the release read, “Mr. President, the award is an eloquent testimony of your achievements since you assumed office; you came into office at a precarious time that witnessed crisis, chaos and legal battle. In all, you faced the situation with the heart of a lion and rose up to the occasion.”
“Mr. President Sir, you are a committed reformer with an unflagging love for ANA and her members, working tirelessly to embrace innovative ideas that have today transformed the association into an epicentre of excellence.”
With this recognition, Ibadan Book Club hopes that ANA President will be propelled to pursue more development agenda for ANA and her members.
Ibadan Book Club finally prayed that God would continually direct and strengthen Camillus Ukah and his National Executive Committee members to uplift ANA to a glorious and enviable height.

ANA PRESIDENT CONGRATULATES DR. WALE OKEDIRAN ON HIS EMERGENCE AS PAWA SECRETARY GENERAL

The President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Camillus Ukah has congratulated Dr. Wale Okediran on his emergence as the newly elected Secretary-General of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA).

ANA in a statement signed by its current General Secretary, Maik Ortserga said Dr. Wale Okediran’s unanimous confirmation by the General Council of the Pan African Writers Association to head the body for another three years is a testament to his years of literary experience, achievements and outstanding performance while in office as Acting Secretary General of PAWA.

It would be recalled that Dr. Wale Okediran was first appointed Secretary-General of PAWA in acting capacity in 2020 few years after the death of Prof. Atukwei Okai, the founding Secretary-General of PAWA. Prof. Okai’s death had left the position vacant for about two years.

While wishing Dr. Wale Okediran the best in his new position, ANA President, Camillus Ukah added that he expects Dr. Wale Okediran’s election as Secretary General of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) will bring more joy and more honour to the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) and Nigeria in particular.

ANA President further affirmed that Dr Wale Okediran, who over the years concentrated his energy on rebuilding, rebranding and promoting PAWA will excel in his new position and take the association to enviable heights during his term as the Secretary General of PAWA.

ANA finally joined family, friends and colleagues in wishing Dr. Wale Okediran well in his new endeavour and also prayed to Almighty God to imbue him with good health and wisdom to succeed on the task.

Dr. Okediran brings to the position almost 30 years’ experience as a public servant.

He served as a Member of the Federal House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007, contributing to advocacy, regional dialogue and policy development, leading to improvements in health across Africa. He has consulted for several international and local development agencies such as Constella Futures International USA, National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, USIS, UNAIDS, NPHCDA, NACA, UNICEF, Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria, andAction Aid.

Dr. Okediran has published till date, fourteen novels, many of which are on the reading lists of a number of Nigerian universities.His highly acclaimed novel, Tenants of the House, which is a fictional account of his years in the House of Representatives was the 2011 Co-Winner of the Wole Soyinka Prize for African Literature.

Together with a few friends, Dr. Okediran in 2010 established the first Writers Residency in Nigeria, the Ebedi International Writers Residency in Iseyin, Oyo State. This is an initiative that is building and motivating teams of writers across Africa and the world at large.

Dr. Okediran is a Fellow of the General Medical Practitioners of Nigeria and Fellow of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria, and a member of the Association of Nigerian Authors, prior to serving as its National President between 2006 and 2009. Dr. Okediran is currently the Deputy Secretary-General (Africa) for the Union of Writers from Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Dr. Okediran holds BSc (Hons) 1977, MB, ChB 1980 from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). In view of his prowess in the field of sports where he variously represented his University and Oyo State, Dr. Okediran was awarded a university scholarship for sports between 1977 and 1980 at the University of Ife.

ANA CONGRATULATES DENJA ABDULAHI ON PAWA AWARD

Camillus Ukah, President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has said the PAWA ESTEEMED PATRON OF THE ARTS AWARD given to the immediate past President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Denja Abdulahi, is an award well deserved.

In a statement personally signed by ANA General Secretary on Monday and made available to newsmen, Maik Ortserga said Denja Abdulahi meritoriously deserved the award considering his achievements and numerous literary projects done under his administration as the 11th President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).

Denja Abdulahi was selected to receive the award by the PAWA Award Committee in recognition of his contributions to the development of Nigerian/African arts and literature.

Part of the release read, “The award did not surprise us in ANA, given the important role Denja Abdulahi has been playing in stabilizing and promoting the largest body of writers in Africa.”

Camillus Ukah led ANA administration also acknowledged the many achievements of Denja Abdulahi led ANA Presidency (2015-2019) which has led to the current developmental works currently ongoing at the Mamman Vatsa Writers Village in Abuja.

CAMILLUS UKAH, ANA PRESIDENT TO RECEIVE PAWA AWARD

The Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) will on 25th of June confer one of the Association’s highest honour on ANA President, Mr. Camillus Ukah.


Currently in his second term in office. Mr. Camillus Ukah was first elected into office in 2020 and was later reelected for a second term last year due to his brilliant and outstanding works.


Camillus Ukah was selected to receive the award in recognition of his contributions and efforts in uplifting ANA via various literary projects and activities he is embarking on as ANA President.


ANA Members across the country are enjoined to attend the investiture ceremony which has been scheduled to take place at the Premier Hotel, Mokola, Ibadan.


Camillus Chima Ukah is a contemporary Nigerian writer educated at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka among other institutions. He has authored eleven creative literature books, edited a five hundred and forty-nine page biography composed essentially of creative conversations, scripted and produced two historical documentaries and two motion pictures.


In 2004 he received the ANA Imo Golden Pen Award; in 2006 he was honoured with the ELSA Award of Excellence for his role in mentoring young undergraduate Nigerian writers. One of his novels, When the Wind Blows was, in 2008, long listed for the NLNG Nigeria Prize for Literature, and in 2012 his entry, Nkechi the Heroine, won the ANA/Lantern Prize. As a critical thinker and gifted intellectual, Ukah has been vigorously engaging the subject of ‘Literature as Tool for Development’ both at national and international forum, while his books keep making waves in Nigeria as subjects of research at undergraduate and post graduate levels; as well as required reading at secondary and tertiary institutions.


He has served the Association of Nigerian Authors in various capacities at both the state and national levels; at the state level, as Financial Secretary, Secretary and Chairman (Imo State); at the national level as member ANA National Constitution Review Committee (2005), member ANA National Teen Authorship Committee (2011-2015), National Coordinator, ANA Teen Authorship Scheme (2015- ), National coordinator, A-BOOK-A-CHILD project (2016- ), Member ANA Land Committee (2016- ) and ANA National President (second term in office).


It was during Ukah’s tenure as Chairman of ANA Imo in 2005 that the branch organized the epoch making state convention where Prof. Charles Nnolim, in a paper titled Contemporary Nigerian Fiction, took a swipe at contemporary Nigerian Writers as fleshly. Nnolim’s generative essay not only drew national attention but it generated international interest in contemporary Nigerian writing. ANA Imo thereafter played host to fourteen literary students and scholars from University of Michigan, Flint during the following year’s convention.


The 2005 ANA Imo convention remains one of the most impactful of its type. Ukah’s administration pursued the gains of that convention with vigour and soon the relevance of creative writing became a demonstrable reality among the government and people of Imo State. By 2006 ANA Imo’s membership had grown from less than twenty members in early 2005 to one hundred and fifty members. It was part of that troupe that besieged the Bayelsa ANA National Convention of 2006 where Imo State, for the first time, won the right to host the 2007 ANA National Convention. It was such a landslide victory with one hundred votes against ANA Niger’s twenty eight votes.


Ukah’s pledge as he took office in April 2005 as ANA Imo Chairman was to help make ANA relevant in the state. The realization of that pledge was eloquently demonstrated during the ANA National Convention of 2007 when the good people of Imo State rallied around ANA Imo to ensure a successful hosting of that convention. Particularly schools that benefitted from ANA Imo’s popular Young Writers Club saw the convention as a payback opportunity and made selfless donations towards the success of the convention. One of the schools, apart from a handsome cash donation of money derived from ‘sign card’, made available two buses for the entire period of the convention with all expenses paid. Such was the kind of goodwill that aptly demonstrated the impact of the activities of ANA in the state.

Camillus Ukah believes strongly in the reward of impact as a sustainable way of growing an association like ANA (LET THE PEOPLE FIRST FEEL THE IMPACT OF YOUR OFFERING AND THEY WILL NATURALLY PARTNER WITH YOU). Certain overtures during Ukah’s leadership of ANA Imo from 2005-2009 and afterwards aptly demonstrate this conviction. In 2007 he was invited by the office of the Petroleum Department, Government House, Owerri to develop a programme for the campaign against youth restiveness in the oil producing areas of Imo State. It was during the heat of the Niger Delta militancy nightmares. He successfully developed a two-hour motion picture entitled ‘Road No Dey’, which was effectively used in the campaign against militancy in secondary schools in the state. The reports of the programmes were published in some national dailies. Based on the huge successes of the Young Writers clubs in secondary and primary schools in Imo State, he was again invited in 2008 by the Imo State Ministry of Education to develop a programme for the improvement of reading culture in the state. He articulated a programme captured in a slogan:
“Let’s go back to books
the sure ladder to excellence
Read your books everyday
Read one book every week
Read four books every month
Read fifty-two books every year
and you will shine as a star.”
The slogan became a popular jingle for media campaign. In the same year and based on the strong waves being made by the reading campaigns in Imo schools, the Imo State Government, against the norm, supported his conference trip to the USA with the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand naira.


At the demise of the legendary Chinua Achebe, Ukah was contracted as a Consultant to the committee that organised a day of tribute for the late literary icon in Imo State. He was equally commissioned by the Achebe’s National Burial Committee to organise a regional day of tribute for Achebe at Nekede, Owerri where Achebe took the entrance examination to the secondary school. It was Ukah that introduced the then ANA National leadership to the Achebe Burial Committee. In all the above engagements and more, ANA Imo members were the key facilitators.

By the same token of recognition, Ukah has, by invitation, become a visible part of some elevated Igbo intellectual groups. Such groups as Conference of Democratic Scholars; Igbo Studies Association; Alaigbo Development Foundation. Little wonder Ukah naturally became the President of the Eastern Writers Forum on its inception in 2009.


As a people builder, Ukah has been deeply involved in the development of literary talents particularly among the young ones. In the past couple of years he has mounted several reading and writing campaigns at the primary, secondary and tertiary institutions of learning in Imo State and beyond. Presently he runs two creativity centres at Logos International Secondary School and CRM International Secondary School all in Imo State. Between 2012 and 2015 the two schools produced, by self help efforts, about seven thousand five hundred books in four different volumes of anthology. Ukah is enthused to see these young ones grow by the transforming power of literature into both literary practitioners and responsible citizens.


Camillus Ukah is an impactful team player, who has the noble endowment of the humility to naturally subscribe to superior argument irrespective of the source. His consummate preoccupation is the delivery of positive results. To him, any system that does not produce tangible results is akin to ‘discomforting drudgery’ and such a system must be catalysed to assume kinetics. Deploying that strategy, he was able to kick-start and drive activities in ANA Imo to the level of relevance it enjoys even to date at the state, regional and national levels.


As ANA National Vice President, Ukah has worked particularly closely with the kinetic and result-oriented current ANA President as special Presidential Envoy on peace and conflict resolution to bring stability to troubled branches of the association nationwide and fight for welfare of members. His visibility and selfless commitment to the huge successes of the Denja Abdullahi led ANA EXCO (2015-) was partly captured in a recent assessment of some ANA Presidential aspirants for the 2019 ANA National elections by ANA Legal Adviser, Barr. Isaac Ogezi. According to that assessment, Camillus Ukah is always the last to go to bed at National Conventions after ensuring that every delegate has been settled. PAWA CONFERENCE STARTS THURSDAY IN IBADAN AS PREPARATION IN TOP GEAR

The Secretary General of the PAN African Writers Association (PAWA), Dr. Wale Okediran has disclosed that preparation is in top gear toward the PAWA Conference and General Assembly.

Countdown to the much awaited PAWA Conference and General Assembly comes to a crescendo in less than 48 hours as expected delegates/writers from 40 African countries will be arriving from their respective countries.

The Theme of this year Conference is Literature since Makerere 1962: The African Writers’ Pan-African Agenda for Peace, Security, and Cultural Development.

The Programme line-up include Books Exhibition, Keynote Lectures, Panel Discussion, Business Meeting, Festival of Life, Excursions, Awards/Dinner Night.

ANA Secretary General, Dr. Wale Okediran has given firm assurances that PAWA is ready to deliver a memorable conference and finally urged writers, literary enthusiasts and general public to attend.

The Pan African Writers’ Association (PAWA), founded in November 1989, is a Ghana-based cultural institution “born in the larger crucible of Pan Africanism. It is an umbrella body of writers’ associations on the African continent and the Diaspora.
