The African Chapter of the International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF) has urged African Short Story Writers to participate in the ongoing African Human Rights Short Story Competition.

In a press statement issued and signed by Wole Adedoyin, President of the International Human Rights Art Festival- African Chapter (IHRAF Africa) called on Short Story writers in Africa to lend their voices on human rights issues in their respective countries.
Parts of the Statement partly read, “African Human Rights Short Story Prize is open to new, emerging and established short story writers. The Prize is open to submissions of work written in English by writers of any nationality or descent.”
“African Human Rights Short Story Prize aims to promote and support the realization of human rights in Africa. To be duly considered, Stories must have Human Rights at heart.”
“The stories can explore any of the following human rights themes: Freedom of Expression, Government Violations, Police Brutality, corruption, forced Eviction, terrorism, Gender Inequality, LGBT Rights, Child Labour, Child Marriage, Domestic Violence, violence and discrimination against women; child abuse; female genital mutilation, ethnic, regional, and religious discrimination, child trafficking etc.”
This year’s prizes will also be awarded in the names of the following African human rights defenders:
STEVE BIKO PRIZE - $100
BANTU STEPHEN BIKO (18 December 1946 – 12 September 1977) was a South African anti-apartheid activist. Ideologically an African nationalist and African socialist, he was at the forefront of a grassroots anti-apartheid campaign known as the Black Consciousness Movement during the late 1960s and 1970s. His ideas were articulated in a series of articles published under the pseudonym Frank Talk. Biko became one of the earliest icons of the movement against apartheid, and is regarded as a political martyr and the "Father of Black Consciousness". His political legacy remains a matter of contention.
PIUS ADEBOLA ADESANMI PRIZE - $75
PIUS ADEBOLA ADESANMI (27 February 1972 – 10 March 2019) was a Nigerian-born Canadian professor, writer, literary critic, satirist, and columnist. He was the author of Naija No Dey Carry Last, a 2015 collection of satirical essays. Adesanmi died on 10 March 2019, when Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed shortly after take-off.
BINYAVANGA WAINAINA PRIZE - $50
KENNETH BINYAVANGA WAINAINA (18 January 1971 – 21 May 2019) was a Kenyan author, journalist and 2002 winner of the Caine Prize for African Writing. In April 2014, Time magazine included Wainaina in its annual Time 100 as one of the "Most Influential People in the World"
His debut book, a memoir entitled One Day I Will Write About This Place, was published in 2011. In January 2014, in response to a wave of anti-gay laws passed in Africa, Wainaina publicly announced that he was gay, first writing an essay that he described as a "lost chapter" of his 2011 memoir entitled "I am a Homosexual, Mum", and then tweeting: "I am, for anybody confused or in doubt, a homosexual. Gay, and quite happy.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
• Entries must be 1500 words minimum, 5,000 words maximum
• Entries are welcomed from anywhere in the world, but must concern human rights concerns in Africa
• Stories must have Human Rights at heart.
• Only one story per entrant
• The Story must be a new and original piece of work. The Story must not have been published in any form or awarded previously.
• Incomplete submissions will not be considered or acknowledged.
• All submissions must be written by a single author.
• Deadline for submissions is 30th June, 2022
• Winners will be announced on the 30th of July 2022
• Any signs of plagiarism will disqualify the entrant.
• IHRAF reserves the right to withdraw and reclaim the financial value of the prize if it is discovered that a writer has fabricated any information in their submission.
• Organizers’ decision is final

SEVEN WRITERS AND ARTIST FOR 2022 IHRAF TEEN ARTS AND WRITING MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME

Six Writers and One Artist have been nominated for this year IHRAF Teen Arts and Writing Mentorship Programme, a programme of the African Chapter of the International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF) with its international headquarters in New York, U.S.A. They include: Moyinoluwa Oyetunji Sarah (Poet), Akinfenwa Temitope (Poet), Tinuade Dorcas Omitoogun (Short Story Writer), Ajobo Haleeah Oluwalaanumi (Poet & Short Story Writer), Razak Samad (Artist), Stephen Ajeigbe (Poet) and Peace Akindimeji Akin-Tella (Poet).

This was contained in a statement signed by the Director of IHRAF in Africa, Wole Adedoyin.

According to him, IHRAF Teen Arts and Writing Mentorship Programme provides the guidance to help teen writers and artists perfect their craft and successfully complete and publish their self-published book/arts projects. They are to write/create works of art on issues bordering Human Rights issues affecting Africa.

The programme also hopes to help empower shortlisted recipients to independently identify growth areas and find relevant, valuable, ongoing learning opportunities from individuals who have relevant and shareable experiences and insights.

The duration for the programme is six months and completed works will be published by the International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF).

MEET THE RECIPIENTS OF THE IHRAF TEEN ARTS AND WRITING MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME, 2022 EDITION
MOYINOLUWA OYETUNJI SARAH (POET)
Oyetunji Moyinoluwa Sarah, born thirteen (13) years ago in Ibadan, her birth was recorded on the 17th day of November 2008; she is presently a junior secondary School III, student of God’s Blessing Comprehensive College.
Her journey into creative writing was discovered at an early age, but as a relatively shy and quiet girl, she kept all her writings to herself, with hardly no reader, until her school mother helped her. Adebayo Damilola, helped her discover her talent and motivated her to write and never be discouraged, and so she courted the habit of reading every good book available to read.
She started writing at the age of nine when she was in primary four and has written over five short stories and several poems
Her hobbies include singing, reading, writing and debating.
Her interest in reading and writing has made her a better person and has opened her eyes to desire to change the world positively.
Moyinoluwa specializes in writing poetry and prose, and may consider playwriting in the near future.
She is a member of the Book Friendly Club in her school, where she shares ideas and discusses her works with other writers, under the tutelage of Mr. Marcus Ugboduma .
She is also a member of the Ibadan Book Club. Her greatest aspiration is to become a great writer from Africa.
She has written many poems, some of which include: ‘Have you ever wondered’, ‘I am me’,
‘Rights of the youths, “My way of giving” “Poetry is me”, “My parents my jewel”, “What goes around, comes around”,” Giving is taking” among other poems all yet to be published
Moyinoluwa has also three written works in prose which are, “My life my Complications”
” The rough path”, and “Folashades’s mystery.”
Moyinoluwa as at certain times in her youthful life engaged in acting in the past, usually at the church during special programmes and when she was in primary school, and her next acting stint in which she is actively involved is AGBEKOYA a play on the Farmers uprising in Ibadan in the 70s, which would be staged coincidentally on her forthcoming birthday this November. She had three of her poems read to the listening pleasure of members of the Ibadan book club.
She is grateful to God for her writing skill.
TEMITOPE AKINFENWA (POET)
Temitope Akinfenwa was born 12 years ago , since her childhood days she developed her interest in books and enjoys reading at ease, she dreams of being a mass communicator, or an accountant, since she discovered how versatile she is reading and writing, her teachers at God’s Blessing Comprehensive College discovered she was fond of converting her note books to her writing pad where she wrote her poems and short stories, it was then it was discovered that she had several other works she had secretly written and kept to herself, which she had been writing since she was 9 years old. And so she was advised to join the Book Friendly Club of God’s Blessing Comprehensive College Ibadan. Since then, her writing skill has taken a new dimension. She had her first opportunity to read her poems to a large audience when she joined the club, and she was further encouraged, at the monthly reading of the Ibadan book club where she was appreciated having read her poems to a larger and experienced audience.
Some of her poems includes: ‘I must shine’,” My tomorrow”,“Victory is mine” and
“My body,God’s temple”. While her plays and prose includes, “Do no cry yet”
“The Young virgin”, “Blood she’d and not shed” and “From Shame to glory” and others.
She believes a future career in writing is possible and that constant reading shapes one's future, while God, her parents and teachers motivates her to write stories, poems and plays, and they have been her pillars supporting her to be a better person, to them she shall be forever grateful.
TINUADE DORCAS OMITOOGUN (SHORT STORY WRITER)
Tinuade Dorcas Omitoogun, is an upcoming budding creative writer, with a penchant for writing prose and short stories. She is twelve years old and was born to the family of Mr and Mrs Omitoogun on the 23rd day of October, 2009. She started out loving to read books her parents bought for her, and reading books her older siblings had at home. As she fiddled with books at an early age, tearing off book covers and pages of novels, her family never got discouraged, this prompted her father to buy her books meant for her age, at that time she was barely three years old. She guided her book jealously and since then holds every book in high esteem, as she scribbled on these books, the love for writing began to take shape. She got motivated by every book she read, and her appetite for reading heightened. And a desire to write stories began to build up, because of her love for reading.
At the age of 8 years she fulfilled her dream to be a writer, by completing her first story titled “The best place to be” at that time she was in primary 4.
Among her other works are
“Seed to sow”, “honesty pays”, “The reward of jealously”, and “Why didn’t I listen”? etc. Some of my poems also are “Why is this world wicked”, “My mother”.
Tinuade Dorcas Omitoogun is a member of Book Friendly Club of God’s Blessing Group of Schools and also the Ibadan Book Club, where she has had opportunities to read out her poems and stories to club members. She earned herself a major role in AGBEKOYA, a play based on farmers uprising in Ibadan in the 60s. The play has further motivated her to write plays and so she looks forward to publishing her first book soon.
HALEEAH OLUWALAANUMI AJOBO (POET & SHORT STORY WRITER)
Ajobo Haleeah Oluwalaanumi is a lover of nature and enjoys reading and narrating stories. Presently, preparing for her BECE 2021/22 Academic Session. She aspires to become a qualified and successful Medical Practitioner. A founding member of Elewura Readers’ Club. Haleeah recently read one of her works at a readership promotion campaign programme of the National Library of Nigeria, Oyo State Branch held recently in Ibadan.
SAMAD RAZAK (ARTIST)
Samad Razak was born in the year 2007 in Ibadan, Oyo state where he hails from and currently lives. As Samad grew up he watched his elder sister draw and paint object and pictures and that inspired him to desire to draw and paint pictures too, At the age of seven, the turnaround came when he drew his first picture, his elder sister saw the talent in him and began helping him out to perfect his artistic skills. Support and encouragement from his parents and teachers have him the needed lifeline,
One day he was suspended from the table tennis team of God’s blessing Comprehensive College Ibadan. He was kept out of the team for weeks for failing to take his studies seriously. While he sat one morning watching his peers play, he had in one hand his drawing pad, some students were gathered around and flipping from page to page with excitement on their faces. At that point Mr Marcus Ugboduma discovered he was an artist and decided to nurture him and promote his artistic works, so he began tasking him. At that point he became a celebrity Artist, whose specialty is simply to draw celebrities and notable personalities.
Among the notable personalities or celebrities he has drawn includes: Burna Boy, Dr Yinka Ayefele, President Mohammadu Buhari, Governor Setup Makinde. But his most favorite drawings are That of the Olubadan of Ibadan Land and Dr Yinka Ayefele. Samad really appreciated his teacher, mentor and master, Mr. Marcus Ugboduma who tutored, mentored, encouraged and took him like his son. In a bid to show his gratitude to him, Samad drew a beautiful portrait of Mr. Marcus and his wife to mark their 3rd wedding anniversary.
Samad is a member of the Book friendly club of God’s blessing Comprehensive college, and also the Ibadan book club. He feels privilege to have exhibited his art works at the 2020 Cultural day celebration held in his school, where the Chairman of the Oyo State council For Arts and culture, was present and promised to take him to the Olubadan of Ibadan Land to present his work to Our royal father, but that dream is yet to see the light of day but he hopes it comes sooner, His works were also exhibited at the Ibadan book club in one of their monthly readings,
Samad is an artist per excellence, who recently played the role of prisoner 1 in Agbekoye. The play AGBEKOYA was staged by students of his School to mark the 2020/21 Valedictory Service. He now believes that with constant reading and study with book club members, he hopes to write poems, plays and prose sooner.
Samad is sure that in the nearest future his drawings will flood the art space as the biggest maker of celebrity art works, his current work is the drawing of Prophetess Esther Ajayi.
STEPHEN AJEIGBE (POET)
Ajeigbe Stephen was born in the year 2008 in Ibadan, Oyo state and he resides there, as he grew up, he never knew he had the talent of writing poems but he tried to be an artist but unfortunately, he discovered it was not in him, at the age of thirteen, he was taken to Ibadan book club by Mr Marcus Ugboduma and when he saw others displaying their talents. By the time it was over, he left very sad because he had nothing to display. At that point Mr. Marcus inspired him to be a poet. He wrote his first poem titled beauty and some other titles "friendship" and “anger in a man". Stephen is a member of The Book Friendly Club of God's blessing Comprehensive College and also the Ibadan Book Club.
He feels privileged to have read his first poem ever on the floors of the Ibadan Book Club.
Stephen is a writer per excellence, who seizes every opportunity available to write poems.
He now believes that with constant personal and group reading and learning with book club members, he hopes to write more poems sooner.
Stephen is sure that in the future, his poems will flood the world as the biggest writer of poems, his current poem is titled "Education with Godliness".
PEACE AKINDIMEJI AKIN-TELLA (POET)
Akin-Tella Peace Akindimeji was born on 29th day of September 2008, in Ibadan.
Peace did not start writing Early enough, but preferred reading. His ability to write was discovered at the age of 13, when he saw his classmates and other friends writing and feeling happy with their works being read in gathering and on the School assembly ground, also at that point came the constant boastings of one of his teachers, Mr Marcus Ugboduma, The coordinator of the Book Friendly Club of his school, who used to boast about his students writing prowess and creative skills, especially in Poetry and prose.
He also constantly advised that writing was going to help them academically and it was capable of taking them to greater heights.
This prompted Peace to write his first set of poems which includes: "Why death", "Ibadan",
" I am strong" and "Foolishness."

Peace Akin- Tella is currently a member of his School's Choir, The JETS Club, the Book Friendly Club of God's Blessing Comprehensive College and the Ibadan Book Club,
He has represented his School in several competitions and most recently The Science Teachers Association of Nigeria OLYMPIAD 2022, at the junior category. He looks forward to becoming a renowned Science fiction writer in the near future. His Parental encouragement has been his source of inspiration in Writing.

15 REASONS WHY SWANA IS ILLEGAL AND WHY YOU SHOULD BOYCOTT SWANA FIESTA

1. SWANA is Alien to ANA Constitution
2. No formidable membership structure, many of its members are ANA members in Southwest
3. SWANA has no logo of its own
4. SWANA doesn’t recognize Mr. Camillus Ukah (who is in charge of ANA Secretariat, ANA Certificate of Registration, has the backings of the Board of Trustees, Advisory Council and ANA Elders) as ANA President major reason why they are aligning with pro Maiwada’s group in Osun State
5. SWANA is not a duly registered literary organization
6. It’s a one man show
7. SWANA has no constitution of its own
8. SWANA has no strategic plan
9. Since inception over five years ago, it has not organized any workshop, competition or published an anthology
10. It lacks Yoruba Agenda
11. It is a gathering of fun seekers not for literary discourse that will benefit Southwest writers
12. SWANA played a prominent role in the current crisis we are facing in ANA
13. The likes of Muriola Awosemo and Abiodun Oloyede are Maiwada’s henchmen, the major reason why they endorsed Maiwada’s ANA Destabilization Agenda.
14. SWANA Fiesta was designed to cause crisis in Osun State
15. SWANA is not a literary agenda of Southwest writers; it’s an agenda of some selfish individuals.

OSOGBO BOOK CLUB ASKS MEMBERS TO BOYCOTT SWANA FIESTA

The Osogbo Book Club, a literary body under Osun ANA has officially informed her members and other writers in Osun State to boycott the 2022 Edition of SWANA Fiesta describing the organization and the event as unconstitutional, felonious and illegitimate.

Osogbo Book Club made its position known through a press statement made available to newsmen in Osogbo, calling on its members and writers in Osun State to boycott the event.

Osogbo Book Club also distanced itself from partaking in the scheduled programme aim at covering the past mistakes and shame of some certain individuals in the Association.

Parts of the statement read, “There is no provision for a regional body in the ANA Constitution. SWANA is not in the ANA Constitution. You can download ANA Constitution here https://www.ananigeria.org/files/ANA_Constitution_2012.pdf to confirm this claim. SWANA Contributed 80% of the problems we are witnessing in ANA today. It was the same SWANA who brought Maiwada to Ekiti and honoured him with an award he did not deserve. They brought Maiwada to unsettle the peace we enjoy in ANA. The Northern Writers Summit in which Maiwada is a staunch and strong member did not honor him with any award or support his ANA Presidential ambition. Then why SWANA? It’s no more news that the duo of Muriola Awosemo and Abiodun Oloyede have lost grip of ANA Osun, to them, bringing SWANA to Osun is the only way they can restore the grip. Muriola Awosemo and Abiodun Oloyede are staunch supporters of Maiwada and they did not hide this.”

"As we are speaking, ANA President, Camillus Ukah is not aware of any SWANA FIESTA. Since they are not recognized by the ANA Constitution, the organizers of SWANA should stop using ANA Logo as their official logo. The Northern Writers Summit has its own logo, same thing with the South South Writers Union and other regional writers bodies."

“To us in Osogbo Book Club, SWANA is a failure. An outfit of over five years that cannot boast of publishing an anthology or organizing a creative writing workshop for up and coming writers in Southwest. The only thing they do is to eat and drink.”

"We are calling on security agencies to take note of anyone trying to use the name of ANA to instigate crisis in Osun state. People should be properly guided and not allow themselves to be scammed. A word is enough for the wise."

On a final note, Osogbo Book Club believed ANA Osun is not a property of some selfish individuals who believed it’s their fundamental right to impose those who are incapable of making any change or transforming the literary space of the state. Such imposition is now a story of the past.

IBADAN BOOK CLUB MARCH READING HOLDS ON SATURDAY, MARCH 19

Ibadan Book Club (IBC) has set aside 19th day of March, 2022 to host two Ibadan based writers and a Broadcaster, Tolulope Ogunronbi, Jumoke Ola-Ogundele and Wahab Sulaimon Olamilekan in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
A statement issued by the Coordinator and Secretary of the club, Ayobami Odunyemi and Hassanat Ayoade said the event would take place at the Oyo State Library Board, Opposite Cocoa House, Ibadan by 12PM prompt.
Tolulope Ogunronbi is a Broadcast Journalist (OAP) with a unique difference. He studied at the International Institute of Journalism and graduated from the Institute in 2021. Currently a Newscaster, Producer (Studio Manager) and Broadcaster with Raypower 95.1FM Ibadan. Tolulope Ogunronbi will be talking on the Synergy between broadcasting and reading.

Jumoke Ola-Ogundele was born into the family of Mr and Mrs Olaogundele. She is from
Ikogosi Ekiti. Jumoke is a graduate of Industrial Chemistry from Ekiti State University and served in Lagos at Funmi Virtuous Educational Consult. As at the time of this reading, Jumoke Ola-Ogundele is the Founder of READ2ME MOBILE LIBRARY and also a digital marketer. She will be sharing her experience on Mobile Library.

Wahab Sulaimon Olamilekan with the pseudonym Rebel Stonez, is a graduate of Social Studies Education at the University of Ilorin. He is a poet, social educator, textile designer, social media marketer and customer relations officer. He believes in the African teachings of good character and respect. He finds pleasure in the blues poetry of Langston Hughes and Nikki Giovanni and also enjoys listening to folk songs of Michael Kiwanuka and Beautiful Nubia. Wahab's art works and poems have been published in the Artmosterrific magazine issue 2, Afrorep and elsewhere.
The upcoming book reading event promises to be an avenue for reading creative works such as poetry, fiction, book sales and signing, contacts with other readers and book writers in all corners of the Oyo State, the statement added.
Prospective writers who have works in poetry, short stories and novels can also attend to read their works to other writers and readers. Membership forms and certificate of membership will be available at no charge to first timers.
Ibadan Book Club is an initiative of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW). It was founded in 2011 by SYNW in order to contribute its own quota to the growth and development of Reading Culture in Oyo State.

IBADAN BOOK CLUB TO MARK WORLD BOOK DAY

In commemoration of World Book Day 2022, the Ibadan Book Club in collaboration with IHRAF Book Club will on Saturday 19th day of March, 2022 organize a series of activities to celebrate the day. One of the activities will be lectures to be delivered by the trio of Tolulope Ogunronbi, Jumoke Ola-Ogundele and Wahab Sulaimon Olamilekan.

In a release signed by the Coordinator of the Club, Ayobami Odunyemi said the event will take place at the Oyo State Library Board, Opposite Cocoa House, Ibadan by 12PM prompt.

World Book Day, also known as World Book and Copyright Day or International Day of the Book, is an annual event organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing, and copyright. The first World Book Day was celebrated on 23 April in 1995, and continues to be recognized on that day.

Below are short profiles of our guest speakers/readers.

Tolulope Ogunronbi is a Broadcast Journalist (OAP) with a unique difference. He studied at the International Institute of Journalism and graduated from the Institute in 2021. Currently a Newscaster, Producer (Studio Manager) and Broadcaster with Raypower 95.1FM Ibadan. Tolulope Ogunronbi will be talking on the Synergy between broadcasting and reading.

Jumoke Ola-Ogundele was born into the family of Mr and Mrs Olaogundele. She is from
Ikogosi Ekiti. Jumoke is a graduate of Industrial Chemistry from Ekiti State University and served in Lagos at Funmi Virtuous Educational Consult. As at the time of this reading, Jumoke Ola-Ogundele is the Founder of READ2ME MOBILE LIBRARY and also a digital marketer. She will be sharing her experience on Mobile Library.

Wahab Sulaimon Olamilekan with the pseudonym Rebel Stonez, is a graduate of Social Studies Education at the University of Ilorin. He is a poet, social educator, textile designer, social media marketer and customer relations officer. He believes in the African teachings of good character and respect. He finds pleasure in the blues poetry of Langston Hughes and Nikki Giovanni and also enjoys listening to folk songs of Michael Kiwanuka and Beautiful Nubia. Wahab's art works and poems have been published in the Artmosterrific magazine issue 2, Afrorep and elsewhere.

Ibadan Book Club (IBC) has set aside 19th day of March, 2022 to host two Ibadan based writers and a Broadcaster, Tolulope Ogunronbi, Jumoke Ola-Ogundele and Wahab Sulaimon Olamilekan in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
A statement issued by both the Coordinator and Secretary of the club, Ayobami Odunyemi and Hassanat said the event would take place at the Oyo State Library Board, Opposite Cocoa House, Ibadan by 12PM prompt.

The upcoming book reading event promises to be an avenue for reading creative works such as poetry, fiction, book sales and signing, contacts with other readers and book writers in all corners of the Oyo State, the statement added.
Prospective writers who have works in poetry, short stories and novels can also attend to read their works to other writers and readers. Membership forms and certificate of membership will be available at no charge to first timers.

WORLD THEATRE DAY TO DAZZLE THE WORLD

It is going to be a marriage of literary and artistic activities that will give birth to fun, excitement and unforgettable moments. Stars will parade and shine in the broad light of day as the Ado-Awaye Tourism Heritage Development Initiative (ATHDI) and the Oyo State Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), will hold the 2022 World Theatre Day (WTD) celebration With great pomp and ceremony.

Holding from March 25 to 27, 2022, the celebration will take place at the foot and on top of Ado Mountain, a wonderful mountain harbouring tourist attractions such as Elephant Tree, Ladebo Cave, Ishage Boulder, Iya Alaro Lake as well as Iyake Lake that are the two known suspended lakes in the world.

Amongst others, activities slated for the 2022 World Theatre Day celebration include traditional and modern musical shows, dance performances, poetic renditions, historical narratives, drama presentations, personality awards and a special schools’ drama contest that will attract plaques and monetary awards for winners.

According to the organizing committee made up of respected men and women of the society, the 2022 World Theatre Day celebration in Ado-Awaye, will be attended by various theatre artistes, government functionaries, traditional rulers, culture activists, arts director, arts administrators, tourists, promoters of tourism and arts lovers.

Interestingly, the celebration is being uniquely planned to create a platform for socio-cultural interactions amongst participants and guests, a platform for the discovery, exposition and promotion of literary and artistic talents, and also serve as a unity forum.

Since the year 2022 is tagged the 60th Anniversary of World Theatre Day, the Ado-Awaye Tourism Heritage Development Initiative and the Oyo State TAMPAN are prepared to dazzle the world with a talk-of-the-town celebration. This celebration which enjoys the royal blessing of the Alado of Ado-Awaye, HRM Oba Ademola Olugbile Folakanmi, no doubt, will record the biggest crowd of performing artistes in Nigeria.

ACPP MOURNS SULE ALAO

A Chieftain of the Alliance of Collaborating Political Parties (ACPP), a pro Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola political group, Wole Adedoyin has expressed grief over the death of the former Chairman of the Alliance, Chief Sule Alao. He described the demise of Chief Sule Alao as a shock to ACPP members.
Adedoyin expressed his grief in a statement issued on Monday in Ilesa, Osun State. He noted that the contributions of the deceased to the growth and success of the allicance and APC in the state were enormous.
The governorship candidate of Hope Democratic Party (HDP) in the 2018 Governorship election further described Chief Sule Alao as a man of integrity and exceptionally hardworking. A dedicated, committed and dependable political mentor.
Adedoyin finally condoled with the immediate family of the deceased and prayed that God would grant the departed eternal rest.

SYNW REGISTERS FIFTY THREE NIGERIAN FEMALE WRITERS AS MEMBERS OF IWWG


The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) under the leadership of Wole Adedoyin has registered fifty three Nigerian Female writers from Seventeen states of the federation into the International Women Writing Guild (IWWG).


According to a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the Society, Musa Sunusi on Friday said the Partnership between the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) and the International Women Writing Guild (IWWG), USA is to create a uniquely ingenious, exploratory and educative platform geared towards inspiring young female writers from all parts of Nigeria in fanning their writing talents and providing opportunities for exhibiting their works. Also, to bring women writers together under a structure of mentoring and support.


As evidence of registering the fifty three Nigerian female writers into IWWG as full members, a mail from the Director of IWWG, Michelle Miller partly reads “Everyone is signed up now and they will all receive individual welcome letters by email. If they wish to attend any workshops, they can email me and I will register them at no cost (so long as there is space).


The International Women's Writing Guild (IWWG) was founded in 1976 by Hannelore Hahn. It is a 501(c)3 non-profit writing organization whose mission is to "empower women writers personally and professionally through writing. The IWWG has been an official Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with special consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council since 1998.


Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) is a member of the International Authors Forum (IAF). It has also collaborated with different international organizations like the Alliance Francaise, 100 Thousand Poets for Change, Woman Scream International Poetry and Arts Festival and lately International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF).

Ibadan Book Club, a book promotion platform under the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) is pleased to announce a special anthology of poems, art works and essays in honour of the late Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1, the immediate past Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1, (26 August 1928 – 2 January 2022) was a Nigerian monarch who sat as the 41st Olubadan of Ibadan following his coronation on 4 March 2016.

Saliu was born as the first of 17 children of Raji Olayiwola and Suwebat Amope Adetunji on 26 August 1928 in Ibadan, Oyo State. He grew up learning vocational jobs until he took up fashion designing as a means of living after moving into Lagos. While working as a fashion designer, Saliu delved into musical record marketing until in 1960 when he founded his first of three record label imprints called Baba Laje Records which housed notable fuji music acts including Dauda Epo-Akara, Wasiu Ayinde Marshall and KS1- Malaika.

Prior to his coronation as the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Saliu Adetunji was the Balogun of Ibadan land. He died in Ibadan on 2 January 2022, at the age of 93.

To this end, (a) collection of poems, art works and essays is/are thus being prepared to honour him and recognize his contributions to humanity especially the people of Ibadanland in particular. Hence, friends, well-wishers, fans, followers, colleagues are thereby invited to contribute poems, artworks and essays of significant insights on any specific or broad themes relating to Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1, his ideology and legacy.

Ibadan Book Club (IBC) has set aside February 26, 2021 to host Mrs. Akintola Mabel as her Guest Reader/Speaker for the month of February.

A statement from Ayobami Odunyemi, the Coordinator of the Club, said the event would take place at the Oyo State Library Board, Opposite Cocoa House, Ibadan by 12PM prompt. The statement also said the Club has set aside February for special readings in honour of the departed Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1.

She is a member of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS, Oyo State Chapter), Nigerian Red Cross Society and the Association of Formidable Educational Development (AFED) Oyo State Branch. Mrs. Akintola Mabel had served as Treasurer and Assistant Gen. Sec under NAPPS Oyo State while she also served as AFED’s State Treasurer. She is the Founder of The Reading Project, Ibadan. She is happily married with three children.

FROM RASCALITY TO HEROISM: A REVIEW OF MUKAILA LAMIDI AUXILIARY: LIFE & CAREER BY EBIKA ANTHONY

Mukaila Lamidi Auxiliary: Life & Career is a literary biographical book, creatively telling stories of a rascally boy, who wobbled through the undulating paths and snaky roads of existence to become a man of heroism. Written by Biola Layonu and Freeman Okosun, two cooperative partners in the practice of biographical documentations, this book is very unique, captivating and desirable. It treats issues of political history, socio-political struggles, childhood plays and pranks, street life, friendship fun and traditional polygamous setting where rivalry, pettiness and jealousy often rear their heads.

Interestingly, the authors take a reader from floating in one stream of exciting story to another, and then to another, making the reader enjoy tributaries of stories flowing into the sea of pleasurable reading. Biola Layonu and Freeman Okosun succeeded immensely, in telling stories about Mukaila Lamidi, whose father, a Civil Servant, had wished that he (Mukaila) went to school and eventually become a Civil Servant as well. But alas! A father’s idea of travel by air was quite different from the son’s idea of travel by road.

Indeed, seeing a book on Mukaila Lamidi, alias Auxiliary, one’s mind would be congested of various ideas. Here is a rugged and dogged man who holds the society with a firm grip, because, he believes that the society holds him with iron hands. The good thing is that the authors have told stories that the society cannot ignore, but to read in order to know the true person of Mukaila Lamidi and his hustles and bustles to be able reach the arena of leadership. From a nobody, he bulldozed his way to become somebody, who now dines and wines with the high and mighty.

In Chapter One of the book, the reader is introduced to Pa Lamidi’s polygamous home into which Mukaila was born. Pa Lamidi, believing that Mukaila should be a Civil Servant like himself, made arrangements for his enrolment at the N5 Elementary School. Indeed, Pa Lamidi believed so much in Mukaila as a true son with the air of fearlessness around him. On page three of the book, the authors noted: “A child whom he (Pa Lamidi) was certain would grow up brave and bold enough to confront life’s complexities was well as its whims and fancies.”

Mukaila’s start of elementary school is captured in Chapter Two. Here, the authors gave an account of General Yakubu Gowon’s visit to Ibadan, how Mukaila and a number of pupils were lucky to shake Gowon’s hand, and how Mukaila developed hatred for school environment as a result of being flogged by Teacher Ajala.

The incidents in Chapter Three are quite attention-grabbing. Against Pa Lamidi’s strong wish, Mukaila refused to taste the juicy apple of secondary school education. Despite his good First School Leaving result, and Fatimah College, Ikire, waiting to welcome him, the boy Mukaila, who already had hatred for school environment, turned his back. Instead, at the age of 12, he drank the strong wine of street life to define his own kind of freedom existence, and not a regimented life of civil service. Hear the authors on page 60: “He didn’t want the clean, coordinated, almost sweat-less way of life that Civil Service produced. It looked too dull and uninteresting for the kind of blood that boiled through his veins.”

Since he turned against his father’s wish, Mukaila disappeared from home and took to car-washing at Mokola, which was then the major motor park in Ibadan. In those days, Gbadegesin, a fearless and most feared motor pack tout ruled Mokola. It happened that while Mukaila was washing a car one day to make ends meet, Gbadegesin who desperately needed money, approached Mukaila to collect the day’s tax. Mukaila told Gbadegesin to give him some time to finish washing the car, but Gbadegesin will not take that. So, he pushed Mukaila by his shoulder and kicked his bucket of water.

In annoyance, Mukaila pushed him as well, and that highly annoyed Gbadegesin, the lord of Mokola Motor Park. A fight began, it was a great fight. The two rascals fought until both of them were exhausted before they were separated. Gbadegesin, in the full glare of the world, looked dazed. Nobody at the Mokola Park had dared him. But Mukaila, that small boy had the gut and bravely bruised his ego, rudely roughened his mien, badly battered his personality and brought his great motor park authority to disrepute. Gbadegesin was truly dazed.

After that great fight, Gbadegesin was afraid that Mukaila might one day overthrow him at the park. So, Gbadegesin worked on his loyalists and they began to rebel against Mukaila. On page 71, Layonu and Okosun wrote: “He (Gbadegesin) began to devise several mischievous means to put Mukaila in trouble, and to present him like a villain in the eyes of everyone, because he had reckoned that with Mukaila around, he was bound to lose his place of honour before long. This mischievous sabotage by Gbadegesin began to make the streets unbearable for Mukaila.

For what seemed like a dark moment, Mukaila left Ibadan for Lagos to begin a new life of making ends meet. This new life of Mukaila was painted on the canvas of Chapter Four. While in Lagos, he worked as a bus conductor, saved money and eventually gained admission into a driving school to earn his driving certificate. Along the line, the death of his father, Pa Lamidi, which Mukaila read in a letter sent to him, hit him so hard and got him devastated. “Mukaila had not cried in years,” the authors wrote on page 98/99, “he was a man of the streets, and one thing every person from the street would always learn, was hardiness, to be unfeeling. But as Mukaila held the letter, he could not withhold the urge to cry. It was the only way he could loosen the grip that was tightened round his neck like a noose. He covered his hands round his face and wept.

In Chapter Five, the authors described episodes of Mukaila’s return to Ibadan, and how he joined the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). In the NURTW, Auxiliary became an active politician and a unionist who gradually, rose to the position of Vice-Chairman in Oyo State. While in Chapter Six, Auxiliary was linked to a sensational murder case. Said to be a victim of political persecution, he was detained in prison and eventually, was discharge and acquitted. Later, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State elevated Auxiliary to take charge of disciplinary matters concerning motor park management in Oyo state.

Noted as an ardent lover of a large polygamous family in Chapter Seven, eulogized as a devout Muslim who built a mosque in memory of his Muslim father, and also built a church in honour of his Christian mother in Chapter Eight, and described as a socialite and hotelier in Chapter Nine, Auxiliary’s biography is concluded in Chapter Ten, with comments by his relatives, friends and associates. Amongst these people, Johnson Abiola Jaiyeoba commented on Auxiliary. “He is stubborn but very hardworking,” Abiola said, “he is also steadfast and resilient. I believe those qualities made him to rise in his chosen career,” Abiola added.

In fact, this biographical book is a laudable feat of creative versatility and distinction. It is a bold literary piece that serves as a veritable window through which readers can see the clear image of Mukaila Lamidi, a man whose dog is given a bad name, but the society cannot hang it, a man whose person some people unfortunately, misunderstood and misinterpreted, but refused to be bullied, a man whose waist is far above water level, and so, opposite forces cannot drown him.

The authors – Biola Layonu and Freeman Okosun thrived with a smooth-flowing prose, their collective voice is bold, and heir narrative pattern is highly commendable. They are advised to take care of the typographic errors in the book when the next edition is to be produced.

In conclusion, this book is a biography of important revelations. It is a revelation of motor park society in which the leader enjoys robust financial benefits, and he is highly respected by his followers, but he must always keep on his toes not to be bullied out of his position by way of force. It is a revelation of what our people will describe as ‘bad belle’ politics where the winning party victimizes perceived opponents. This biography is also a revelation of what people can get through the highly-placed people they know. Above all, it is a revelation of Mukaila Lamidi alias Auxiliary as a fearless Ibadan indigene, a onetime car washer, bus conductor, driver, unionist, politician, socialite, hotelier and a family man paddling in the boat of polygamy like his father of blessed memory.

OSUN IPAC RE-ELECTS SIMEON ADEWALE ADEBAYO AS CHAIRMAN


The Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC), the umbrella body of registered Political Parties in Nigeria, Osun state chapter has re-elected Simeon Adewale Adebayo, the Osun State Chairman of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) as Chairman of the Council for the second term, for year 2022-2023. The election was held at the Osun State Secretariat of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday, 21st day of January, 2022.


According to a statement signed by the newly re-elected Public Relations Officer of the Council who is also the state Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Popoola Olatunji Tunde said Osun IPAC on Friday returned Simeon Adewale Adebayo of APM for a 2-year tenure as Chairman.


Simeon Adewale Adebayo (APM), Adesuyi John Olufemi (ZLP), Tosin Odeyemi (NNPP), Popoola Olatunji Tunde (APGA), Remi Ayanlade (YPP), Odesola Oluseye Titus (APP) and Bello Adebayo (LP) all retained their positions as Chairman, Deputy Chairman, Secretary, Publicity Secretary, Treasurer, Financial Secretary and Organizing Secretary of the Council.


However, Muritala Adegboyega of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and Okandeji Abideen Tunde of the Advanced Democratic Congress (ADC) newly joined the council as Assistant Secretary and Legal Adviser respectively.

Speaking after the election, the newly re-elected chairman of IPAC in Osun state assured that his leadership would provide a level playing field for all members to participate actively for the general good of the Council.

ILESA BOOK CLUB JANUARY READING HOLDS TOMORROW, JANUARY 19


Ilesa Book Club has set aside tomorrow, Wednesday, January 19, 2022 to host two Ilesa based writers, Oyebami Iyanuoluwa (Ezra Alagbada King) and Salimonu Grace (Gracie) in Ilesa, Osun State.

According to a statement issued by the Coordinator of the Club, Abdulhakim A. Babatunde said the event would take place at B011, Osun State College of Education, Ilesa, Osun State by 12:00PM.


The event promises to be an avenue for reading new and creative works such as poetry, fiction, nonfiction, stories, autobiography and serves as an opportunity to contact with other readers and writers in Ilesa.


Upcoming writers who have works in poetry, Short stories and novels can also attend to read their works to fellow writers and readers. Membership form will be made available Free for first timers.

Oyebami Iyanuoluwa (Ezra Alagbada King) is an award winning Spoken word Poet,artist, content creator, a writer and a podcaster. He is artistically inclined with the passion to help youth around him. His Podcast has reached out to different countries and has 900 subscribers round the world. His poems have won him Certificates and he has also met and interviewed prominent dignitaries. Oyebami iyanuoluwa (Ezra Alagbada King) is an undergraduate student of English and Literary studies in the University of Ibadan affiliated to Osun State college of Education Ilesa.


Ezra Alagbada King is well known for his Instagram interview which has reached and touched youth in the Country. Through his Instagram Live Interview he has been able to interview the likes of Ojo Ibikunle (Ronke Osodioke), Victory Ashaka, Yomi Soyombo, Aremo Yusuf (Gemini) and many more. His aim is to help and encourage youth to reach their potentials and this he has been doing. He is a Youth Advocate and he is passionate about it. His mantra is to serve humanity and be a beacon of hope for others to find their path.


Salimonu Grace known as Gracie hails from Oyo state, Ogbomoso and a student of the University of Ibadan affiliated campus in Ilesha. Salimonu Grace is currently studying English Education.


She is a social media manager, communicator and freelance writer. Grace loves reading, seeing movies, and writing. She is a member of the League of Writers (LOWs).


She is an award winning writer. All writing under the #gracie belongs to her. Grace writes to correct the ills of the society as events around her also motivate her to write.

APGA SOUTHWEST CHAIRMAN, DEACON SAMSON OLALERE MOURNS OBA JIMOH OLADUNNI OYEWUMI, AJAGUNGBADE III

The National Vice Chairman, Southwest of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and chieftain of the Conference of Nigeria Political Party (CNPP) who is also an indigene of Ogbomosho land, Deacon Samson Olalere is saddened on the passage of Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi, Ajagungbade III.

In a statement issued by the southwest zonal arm of the party described the contributions of Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi, Ajagungbade III as very conspicuous and will greatly be missed by the Good people of Ogbomosho land, Nigeria as a country and the World globally.

Deacon Samson Olalere also expressed huge shock over the demise of the revered monarch, adding that the death had created a huge vacuum that no one can fill except by the divine intervention of God. He also noted that the late Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi, Ajagungbade III was a forthright first class monarch who ruled his people and the entire Ogbomosho land with the fear of God and divine wisdom.

APGA finally urged the family of the deceased royal father, friends, associates and Ogbomosho community to take solace in the knowledge that the monarch lived an exemplary life deserving honour and celebration.

CNPP MOURNS OBA SALIU ADETUNJI AJEOGUGUNISO


The Southwest Chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Alhaji Yinka Olona has expressed grief over the death of His Royal Highness, Oba Saliu Adetunji Ajeoguguniso 1.


In a statement issued by the Conference in Ibadan, on Sunday, Alhaji Yinka Olona described the late Oba Saliu Adetunji Ajeoguguniso 1 as a highly respected monarch whose 6-year reign on the throne helped in promoting unity and peace in Ibadan land as well as attracting significant development and progress to his people.


The Statement further said that the traditional ruler, who passed on at 93, was a courageous leader and one committed to the development of Ibadan land.


CNPP urged the family of the deceased royal father, friends, associates and Ibadan community to take solace in the knowledge that the monarch lived an exemplary life deserving honour and celebration.


Alh. Yinka Olona prayed to Almighty God to comfort those mourning the departed king and grant his soul eternal rest.

CNPP MOURNS ALAO AKALA, SAYS IT’S A NATIONAL LOSS

The Southwest Chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Alhaji Yinka Olona and the current National Vice Chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Deacon Samson Olusegun Olalere have expressed condolences on the death of the former Governor of Oyo State, Otunba Christopher Alao Akala, who passed on the 12th day of January 2022, aged 71 years.

The duo described Akala’s death as a great loss to Nigeria, Oyo State, and his place of origin, Ogbomosho. They also pointed out that the deceased discharged his duties as the Deputy Governor and Governor of Oyo State with a great measure of fairness and firmness and left some legacies he would be remembered.

According to them, It was during Akala’s tenure that CNPP was facelifted and given due recognition by any sitting governor. He appointed many members and discovered many voiceless voices.

“Akala was a man of the people who was very much concerned about their welfare and ever ready to solve problems brought to his attention.” The statement said.

The duo acknowledged the contributions of the deceased to the political community, adding that the late Governor was a big player in the political sector beyond the shores of Southwest.

CNPP finally prayed God to grant the family and associates of the deceased the fortitude to bear the loss, urging them to be consoled by the legacies of service, selflessness and excellence he left behind.

IPAC ADMONISHES PARTIES AGAINST TURNING OSUN INTO COMBAT ZONE

Ahead of the July 16 Governorship election in Osun State, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), has admonished political parties in Osun state to resist any attempt by criminals to infiltrate the state and turn Osun into a combat zone.

The admonition was contained in a statement issued by IPAC Osun Chairman, Mr. Wale Adebayo, on Sunday in Osogbo.

The statement also urged the political parties to organize their primaries in ways that the best will emerge as candidates from their numerous aspirants.

The Statement partly reads:

“Ahead of the July 16 Governorship election in Osun State, we urged political parties to abide by the dictates of the electoral act. We also advise all concerned Stakeholders to toe the path of honour and not involve in acts that will lead to the breakdown of law and order.

“IPAC is aware of the serious crisis within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State. We appeal to them in the interest of our people not to turn the state into battle ground.”

“It is obvious that democracy can only flourish in a peaceful environment. It is our only hope of building a strong, virile, stable, prosperous and a just society.”

“Any threat to the democratic process is a threat to our nationhood and existence and it must be resisted by all the patriotic Osun State Citizens.”

IPAC under the leadership of Mr. Wale Adebayo finally appealed to political parties interested in participating in the forthcoming governorship election to conduct credible primaries in order to avert violence and bloodshed that could heat up the polity and truncate the electorate process in the State.

IBADAN BOOK CLUB MOURNS OBA SALIU AKANMU ADETUNJI, SET TO PUBLISH AN ANTHOLOGY OF POEMS AND ESSAYS IN HIS HONOUR


The Executive Council and Members of Ibadan Book Club have expressed sadness over the death of Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1.


The monarch joined his ancestors on Sunday, January 2, 2022.


Ibadan Book Club in a statement issued in Ibadan on Wednesday by the Coordinator and Secretary of the Club, Ayobami Odunyemi and Mary Ndukwo described Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji’s death as a monumental loss to not only the Ibadan people, but the whole of Oyo State, Yorubaland and the entire country.


“We want to convey our sorrow and condolences for the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1. He was a hero, and one who led by example at all times. Incredibly sad news to learn of the death of our King, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1. He was a loving and devoted husband and father as well as a loyal servant to the crown” the Statement said.


“Ibadanland will profoundly miss his unwavering service and dignified presence. The way he served Ibadanland made us all so proud and we are devastated he is gone. Rest in peace, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji. He earned it after years of unfailing service. He did his best and served with distinction and selflessness. The country owes Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji a huge debt of gratitude and it will miss his calm presence. Our most heartfelt condolences for a tragic loss” the statement added.

In a bid to honour and immortalize the late exemplary monarch, Ibadan Book Club (IBC) is ready to publish an anthology of poems and essays chronicling the times and life of the deceased, to be written by his fans, admirers, well wishers, followers and interested Ibadan citizens. The proposed anthology will be published in an electronic format and made public free of charge.

Ibadan Book Club finally urged Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji’s’s family to take solace in the belief that the late monarch has gone away from all earthly troubles to rest for eternity in God’s bosom.”


Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1, (26 August 1928 – 2 January 2022) was a Nigerian monarch who sat as the 41st Olubadan of Ibadan following his coronation on 4 March 2016.


Saliu was born as the first of 17 children of Raji Olayiwola and Suwebat Amope Adetunji on 26 August 1928 in Ibadan, Oyo State. He grew up learning vocational jobs until he took up fashion designing as a means of living after moving into Lagos. While working as a fashion designer, Saliu delved into musical record marketing until in 1960 when he founded his first of three record label imprints called Baba Laje Records which housed notable fuji music acts including Dauda Epo-Akara, Wasiu Ayinde Marshall and KS1- Malaika.


Prior to his coronation as the Olubadan of Ibadan, Saliu Adetunji was the Balogun of Ibadan land. He died in Ibadan on 2 January 2022, at the age of 93.
