OYO WRITERS COMMEND MAKINDE’S LEADERSHIP STYLE
A group of writers, Writers for Democratic Change (WDC) based in Oyo State has expressed support for the leadership style of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.
The group also pledged its support for Gov. Seyi Makinde in his effort to reposition the state for more developmental purposes.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its Coordinator, Mr. Wole Adedoyin, the group commended the unprecedented and unparalleled effort in the ongoing structural transformation of Oyo State.
Writers for Democratic Change (WDC) who described Gov. Seyi Makinde as “an exemplary and visionary leader”, added that the governor has shown by his words and actions that “Oyo State is a Pace Setter State”.
Reiterating their maximum support for Gov. Seyi Makinde and other candidates of the PDP, Mr. Wole Adedoyin stressed: “We are confident that with the ongoing and known track record of Gov. Seyi Makinde, Continuity, progress and prosperity is assured and guaranteed.
“We have put in place structures and mobilization strategies across some strategic local government areas of Oyo State to deliver Gov. Seyi Makinde’s party, the PDP to victory come 2023.
“We will be focusing our work at the grassroots level by sensitizing and mobilizing voters using literary activities, local markets, churches, households and booth canvassers etc. We will also enhance visibility of Gov. Seyi Makinde’s achievements through literary activities, social media, SMS, jingles, billboards and fliers.
“We hereby reiterate our resolve to offer ourselves to work alongside the PDP statutory structure in the state to ensure Gov. Seyi Makinde total victory at the polls”.

OYO WRITERS DECLARE SUPPORT FOR GOV. SEYI MAKINDE’S SECOND TERM GOVERNORSHIP AMBITION

Writers in Oyo state under the aegis of the Writers for Democratic Change have declared their support for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gov. Seyi Makinde ahead of the 2023 general election.
The group made its position known yesterday after critically analysing the capacity of all the gubernatorial candidates from the different political parties in the state.
Speaking with newsmen immediately after their meeting in Ibadan, Mr. Wole Adedoyin, the Coordinator of the group said Gov. Seyi Makinde has shown capacity and proven quality to govern the state for the next four years.
Wole Adedoyin pledged the collective support of WDC for Governor Seyi Makinde in his effort to position Oyo State as a viable and thriving state.
According to WDC, “We are all witnesses to the structural transformation of our State by Gov. Seyi Makinde and we urge the Governor to continue to do everything within the ambit of the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Oyo State to ensure that the lives and properties of the citizens of Oyo State continue to be protected at all costs
Writers for Democratic Change said their choice of Gov. Seyi Makinde is due to his verifiable capacity and outstanding works done in improving the health, education, agriculture, transportation, Energy, tourism, arts and culture, security sectors of the state. ANA SETS UP CONSTITUTION REVIEW COMMITTEE

The National Leadership of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has set up a three-member committee headed by the National Legal Adviser of the Association, Bentex Torlafia to review its constitution ahead of the association’s 41st International Convention slated to take place from October 26th to October 29th, 2022.

ANA President, Camillus Ukah, through a release issued by the association’s Secretary, Maik Ortserga on Monday, said that the committee was expected to carry out a comprehensive review of the ANA constitution to bring it up to date with current realities in line with global best practices and to create a transparent atmosphere for literary productivity and leadership succession to thrive without undue misgivings concerning obvious loopholes in the ANA constitution.

The release further said that the committee has till September, 30 to submit their report to ANA President.

Other members of the committee are: Martins Ezimano (Secretary) and Dr. Obari Gomba (member).

THE CONSTITUTION REVIEW COMMITTEE


In order to create a transparent atmosphere for literary productivity and leadership sucession to thrive without undue misgivings concerning obvious loopholes in the ANA constitution, a Committee has been set up and charged with the responsibility of carrying out a review of the ANA Constitution.

Young Writers, under the aegis of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) have congratulated the immediate past president of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Mallam Denja Abdulahi, as he celebrates his 53rd birthday anniversary today, Saturday, 27th day of August, 2022.

Describing the former President of ANA as a dependable, courageous and compassionate leader, SYNW stressed that the celebrant’s performance while in office as ANA President was remarkable and outstanding.

Wole Adedoyin, the President of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) in a statement issued on Saturday said the celebrant, Mallam Denja Abdulahi had been helping and mentoring young writers since his days as National President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).

Abdulrahman Aderinoye, was recently conferred with the Fellowship of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), in attestation of his standing as one of the professionals in the Public Relations practice in Nigeria.

Camillus Ukah, who said he was delighted with the news, said it is an achievement that is worthy of felicitations.

ANA, in a congratulatory message issued by her General Secretary, Maik Ortserga said the induction of Abdulrahman Aderinoye marks another major milestone in his colourful career path.

ANA MOURNS RENOWNED NOVELIST, BIYI BANDELE

The President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Camillus Ukah has expressed sadness over the passage of the renowned novelist, playwright and filmmaker, Biyi Bandele.

ANA described the death of Biyi Bandele as shocking and a monumental loss to the book and film industries.

In a statement by ANA’s General Secretary, Maik Ortserga in Makurdi on Tuesday said ANA President extended his condolences to the Bandele’s family, literary community and all who drank from the writer’s fountain of knowledge.

According to the release, “We in ANA received with sadness and a deep feeling of great loss, the news of the passing away of Biyi Bandele, a renowned novelist, playwright and filmmaker.”

“It is painful that Biyi Bandele left the scene at a time the filmmaking industry needs his wealth of experience, but we take solace in the fact that he lived a fulfilled life in the service of humanity to the glory of God.”

While noting that death is an inevitable end to every mortal existence, ANA President said members of the Association were however consoled that the late Biyi Bandele, distinguished himself as an astute and exemplary novelist and filmmaker”.

ANA prayed that God in His infinite mercies grant the bereaved family the fortitude to bear this sad loss and that the almighty Creator grant the deceased eternal rest.


Biyi Bandele (born Biyi Bandele-Thomas; 13 October 1967 – 7 August 2022) was a Nigerian novelist, playwright and filmmaker. Bandele was a UK-based Nigerian writer for fiction, theatre, journalism, television, film and radio. He moved to London in 1990.

Bandele was born to Yoruba parents in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Nigeria in 1967. His father Solomon Bandele Thomas was a veteran of the Burma Campaign in World War II, while Nigeria was still part of the British Empire. Bandele spent the first 18 years of his life in the north-central part of the country.

Bandele had ambitions to be a writer and when he was 14 years old he won a short-story competition.

Later on, he moved to Lagos, then in 1987 studied drama at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He won the International Student Playscript competition of 1989 with an unpublished play, Rain, before claiming the 1990 British Council Lagos Award for a collection of poems. He moved to London in 1990 at the age of 22 armed with the manuscripts of two novels. His books were published, and he was given a commission by the Royal Court Theatre.

Bandele worked with the Royal Court Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as writing radio drama and screenplays for television. His plays include: Rain; Marching for Fausa (1993); Resurrections in the Season of the Longest Drought (1994); Two Horsemen (1994), selected as Best New Play at the 1994 London New Plays Festival; Death Catches the Hunter and Me and the Boys (published in one volume, 1995); and Oroonoko, an adaptation of Aphra Behn's 17th-century novel of the same name. In 1997 he did a successful dramatization of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. Brixton Stories, Bandele's stage adaptation of his own novel The Street (1999), premiered in 2001 and was published in one volume with his play Happy Birthday Mister Deka, which premiered in 1999. He also adapted Lorca's Yerma in 2001.

He was writer-in-residence with Talawa Theatre Company from 1994 to 1995, resident dramatist with the Royal National Theatre Studio (1996), the Judith E. Wilson Fellow at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, in 2000–01. He also acted as Royal Literary Fund Resident Playwright at the Bush Theatre from 2002 to 2003.

Bandele has written of the impact of John Osborne's Look Back in Anger, which he saw on a hire-purchase television set in a railway town in northern Nigeria: And so although I had yet to set foot outside Kafanchan, although I knew nothing about postwar British society, or the Angry Young Men, or anything about Osborne when I met Jimmy Porter on the screen... there was no need for introductions: I had known Jimmy all my life.

Biyi Bandele's novels, which include The Man Who Came in from the Back of Beyond (1991) and The Street (1999), have been described as "rewarding reading, capable of wild surrealism and wit as well as political engagement." His 2007 novel, Burma Boy, reviewed in The Independent by Tony Gould, was called "a fine achievement" and lauded for providing a voice for previously unheard Africans.

His directorial debut film Half of a Yellow Sun was screened in the Special Presentation section at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, and received a "rapturous reception". The film received a wide range of critical attention. His new film, entitled Fifty, was included in the 2015 London Film Festival. He also directed the third season of the popular MTV drama series, Shuga. In 2022 he directed the first Netflix Nigerian Original series, Blood Sisters.

He was announced as the director of the new Netflix and Ebonylife TV co-production Elesin Oba, The King's Horseman the screen adaptation of Wole Soyinka's stage play Death and the King's Horseman, and is set to premier at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022.

DEATH

His untimely death was announced on Facebook by his daughter, on 9 August 2022. The cause of death has not been confirmed.

2022 CONVENTION: ANA NAMES PROF. ABDUL RASHEED NA’ALLAH AS KEYNOTE SPEAKER

The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has unveiled its keynote speaker for the 41st annual convention, scheduled to hold from October 26th to 29th, 2022.

In a press statement signed by the General Secretary of the Association, Maik Ortserga, officially announced Prof. Abdul Rasheed Na'Allah as Keynote Speaker for the biggest continental annual literary event with this year’s theme as, Literature and National Consciousness: The Story as a Catalyst.
Abdul Rasheed Na'Allah, (1962- ) for 10 years, 2009 to 2019, was the vice chancellor of Kwara State University in Nigeria; from July 1, 2019, he became the Vice chancellor of University of Abuja.
He received a BA in 1988 from University of Ilorin, with a thesis "Dadakuada: the trends in the development of Ilorin traditional oral poetry", subsequently published in African Notes., and in 1992 received a M.A. Literature in English from the same university. In 1999, he received his PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, and was subsequently professor and chair of African-American Studies at Western Illinois University. He then became the vice chancellor of Kwara State University in Nigeria, and now Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of University of Abuja, in the Nigerian Capital City.
He is the author and co-author of numerous books, but some books of his that are most recent are Yoruba Oral Tradition in Islamic Nigeria: A History of Dadakuada (Routledge, 2019), Globalization, Oral Performance, and African Traditional Poetry (Palgrave Macmillan, March 2018), African Discourse in Islam, Oral Traditions, and Performance (Routledge, 2010) and Africanity, Islamicity, and Performativity: Identity in the House of Ilorin (Bayreuth African Studies, 2009), and edited a poetry book, Obama-Mentum: An Anthology of Transformational Poetry.. He wrote the article on Kwame Anthony Appiah for The Oxford Encyclopedia of African Thought. He was the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Kwara State University (2015-2019) and is now the Vice-Chancellor, University of Abuja (July 2019-).

ANA CONGRATULATES CAMYNTA BAEZIE ON HIS EMERGENCE AS GAW PRESIDENT
Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has congratulated Dr. Camynta Baezie on his emergence as the new President of the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW), as well as other newly elected national officials of the writers’ association, who emerged at the just concluded elections of the GAW.
Dr. Camynta Baezie polled 38 votes to defeat his challenger, Victor Nana Odei Ofei, who polled 23 votes in an election that was conducted by the Electoral Commission of Ghana. The election was held alongside the Annual Congress of the Ghana Association of Writers at its office, which also serves as the Diplomatic Headquarters of the Pan African Writers Association, PAWA.
A press statement signed by the President and General Secretary of ANA, Camillus Ukah and Maik Ortserga respectively, stated that the GAW election is worthy of commendation, especially with the calibre of persons who have emerged to lead the association. ANA through the release expressed optimism for a more cordial and robust working relationship between ANA and GAW under Dr. Camynta Baezie’s leadership. ANA finally wished Dr. Camynta Baezie and other elected executive members of the GAW national body a successful tenure.
The Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) has been in existence since 1957. After a long period following the overthrow of the First Republic, the resurgence of the organisation began in the 1970s and 1980s. GAW has overcome many challenges to run major literary programs.
The organisation’s aims include bringing together all writers – including those interested in writing creative literary content in Ghana – to create a forum for the study of Ghanaian literary heritage and the exchange of ideas, protect and advance the interests of Ghanaian writers, and foster the development of literature in Ghanaian and foreign languages. GAW focuses on encouraging the study, documentation and preservation of Ghanaian oral traditions and cultural elements, and awakening, cultivating and educating the literary consciousness of the Ghanaian public.
Furthermore, its aims include establishing and maintaining suitable relationships with other writers, writers’ organisations and allied institutions, as well as local and foreign publishers and the book world generally.

CALL FOR SUBMISSION — 7TH CHINUA ACHEBE POETRY/ESSAY ANTHOLOGY


Society of Young Nigerian Writers (Anambra State Chapter) —the literary body that hosts Chinua Achebe Literary Festival and Memorial Lecture —is calling for submission of quality poems and essays from writers across the world, for her 7th edition of the Chinua Achebe Poetry/Essay Anthology.

The annual anthology is a collection of poems and essays published in honour and memory of late Prof. Chinua Achebe, a foremost Nigerian literary legend and father of Morden African Literature. The prestigious anthology will (as usual) be unveiled at the 7th Chinua Achebe Literary Festival and Memorial Lecture, slated to hold on 16th November 2022, at the Anambra State Central E-Library (also known as Prof. Kenneth Dike Central E-Library), in Awka, south-eastern Nigeria.

According to the Editor-in-Chief of the Anthology, and Project Coordinator, Izunna Okafor, who is also the Coordinator of Society of Young Nigerian Writers in Anambra State; Chinua Achebe Literary Festival and Memorial Lecture is an annual literary festival held in honour and memory of Achebe, in celebration of his life, works, contributions and legacies in the literary field.

The event, he noted, was initiated in 2016, and holds annually on Achebe's date of birth, 16th November, with the last edition held in 2021, during which the sixth edition of the Chinua Achebe Essay/Poetry Anthology —There Was a Man —was unveiled.

"It is with a view to mark this year's edition of the Festival in a more remarkable and memorable way that we are calling on both burgeoning and established writers from different parts of the world, to enter their quality and thematically-written poems and essays for this sixth anthology," Okafor said.

“The anthology is in honour of Prof. Chinua Achebe; hence, only entries that relate to or revolve around Achebe, his works, his literary prowess and legacies will be accepted for publication,” he added.


SUBMISSION GUIDELINES/RULES:

1. Only poems essays/reviews are accepted for the anthology.

2. Entrant must specify the genre of his entry; that is, specify if it is poetry or essay/review.

3. The poems and essays/reviews MUST relate to or be themed on either Achebe as a person (his personality), his works, his literary prowess/feats, life, legacies or other areas.

4. The essay or poem should be as brief and concise as possible — maximum of 500 words for essays/reviews, and maximum of 30 lines for poetry.

5. Author’s information —location/contact address, phone number, e-mail address, with a short bio of NOT more than 40 words should be included in the submission.

6. Submission is FREE and open to writers from any part of the world.

7. Entry MUST be the original work of the author/poet. ANY PLAGIARISED WORK WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIED.

8. Only ONE entry per person is allowed.

9. Entrant may choose/write on any interesting title of his/her choice.

EIGHT ABEOKUTA-BASED WRITERS TO HEADLINE READ NIGERIA PROJECT’S FOURTH SENSITIZATION READING


Read Nigeria Project, a nationwide chain of reading events administered by Adwinsa Publications (Gh) Ltd and Abeokuta Book Club has set aside 13th day of August, 2022 to host eight Abeokuta-based writers, Darasimi Adeoye, Demola Ayomide Miracle, Lade Ajayi, Joseph Oluwayemi, Kolapo Mariam, Stephen Ezekiel, Esther Ogunsakin and Quadri Yahya in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

A statement issued by the Coordinator and Secretary of the club, Darasimi Adeoye and Kolapo Mariam said the fourth phase of the sensitization reading would take place at AAC Secretariat, beside NIPCO Filling Station, along MKO Abiola Way, Abeokuta, Ogun State by 12PM prompt.

Read Nigeria Project is a nationwide chain of events administered by Adwinsa Publications (Gh) Ltd and Abeokuta Book Club. It is a project devoted for readers and lovers of books across Nigeria to celebrate and honour some selected important personalities who have contributed meaningfully to the learning and reading culture of the country.

The project also hopes to promote book reading through different events like book bee, quiz contests and other mediums across the country irrespective of tribe, color, sect, age, religion and gender.

Adwinsa Publications was established in March of 1977 in Madina, a suberb of Accra, the capital of Ghana in West Africa. The young business at the time began in the CEO’s house. During the late 1980’s Adwinsa went from a small location to Accra Newtown, also in the Capital City. During this time we also embraced “desktop publishing” (which was also an industry in its infancy) as well as commercial offset printing. From the year 2000 to 2014, we have added multiple high speed printing machines that propelled us into a new level of high-quality offset printing. We also built and expanded our services by putting up an office complex in Agbobga in Accra, Ghana.

The publishing firm is considered experts in Junior and Senior High school syllabus based text books in Ghana. Abeokuta Book Club is an initiative of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW). It was founded in 2011 by SYNW in order to contribute its own quota to the growth and development of Reading Culture in Ogun State.

The Abeokuta Book Club consists of a group of people who meet periodically to discuss the book they have read and exchange those books. Club members encourage each other and learn to read with a critical mind, articulating their opinions about a particular book with others. Lade Ajayi is an educator, reader and writer. She hails from Badagry, Lagos State in Nigeria. A graduate of Yoruba Language from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, she writes in both Yoruba and English Languages and in all genres.


KOLAPO MARIAM


Kolapo Mariam is a Wildlife Management graduate from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She uses her writing to effectively express and enlighten through the use of inspiration to help people reflect, understand, and learn about life and it's phenomenal. She is a pencil artist and textile designer who specializes in portraiture, Adore and Batik making. She loves to read autobiographies, biographies, and memoirs because they serve as a means of seeing other people's world through their experiences. She has read a lot of books authored by Maya Angelou. I know why the caged bird sings, Philip Knight; Shoe Dog, Oprah Winfrey; What I Know for sure, Malcolm Gladwell; Outliers, Tara Westover; Educated, Lisa Brennan Jobs, Larry Sloman and Mike Tyson; Undistributed Truth, Maya Must; A woman makes a plan and many more. One of her most cherished goals as a writer is to author an authobiography.


ESTHER OGUNSAKIN


Esther Ogunsakin is a Christian and a budding writer| content editor and also event planner. She is a graduate of English Studies at the Premier University, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State. She specialises in Morphology, Syntax and Grammar in her editing skills.

She possesses the capacity to solve problems and also can manage significant workloads. Her strength is to make research to proffer solutions to mankind through her writing. She is the CEO of Divine Events. She loves to bake and decorate event locations to make the event a remarkable one for her clients.

Esther Ogunsakin started writing before she gained admission to University in the year 2015. She sees writing as a means to reach out to humans all over the world. She has written copious academic theses, term papers and Christian articles with a successful outcome.

In the year 2021, she started to develop an interest in content editing and proofreading skills. She believes that the beauty of every content is to be free of errors. Within the short period, she has edited and proofread a few Christian and non-fictional manuscripts. Though, she's working as a volunteer content editor and proofreader.

The National Executive Council of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has released programme of event and schedule of activities for the 41st International Convention.


In a statement officially issued by ANA National Secretary, Maik Ortserga said Abuja is set to hold Nigeria’s biggest international Convention of Writers come October this year.

ISEYIN BOOK CLUB EXPRESSES DEEP SADNESS OVER ASEYIN'S DEATH

Iseyin Book Club has expressed grief over the death of His Royal Highness, Oba Dr. Abdul Ganiyy Adekunle Salaudeen Oloogunebi Ajinese.

Iseyin Book Club in a statement of condolence signed by the Coordinator of the Club, Yusuf Opeere said the demise of the traditional ruler at this time was indeed a great loss not only to the Iseyin traditional council but to the people and government of Oyo state as well as Nigeria at large.

Iseyin Book Club described the late Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Dr. Abdul Ganiyy Adekunle Salaudeen Oloogunebi Ajinese as a highly respected monarch whose 15-year reign on the throne helped in promoting unity and peace in Iseyin land as well as attracting significant development and progress to his people.

The Club through the statement praised the contributions of the royal father to the peaceful coexistence and socio-economic development of Iseyinland and the state, which it said endeared the late monarch to his subjects and all those who related with him.

The club prayed that God would comfort the family, friends and subjects of the departed royal father.

Kola Akintola is an artist of rare ingenuity, his perspective is as wide as his gaze on each of his works is intense. He possesses an especial capacity to make art works from common and unlikely things.


His works serve as an experiment to understand the delicate intersection between 'art and life', 'art and anatomy', 'form and media'.


He believes that this interesting conceptualization of form and media arose from his attempt to blend his initial training in Human Kinetics dealing with real forms with his subsequent training as an artist dealing with "imaging". This is 'imaging' not as in photography but as in the faucouldian frame of things, in nature and in life things exist in themselves at particular times and in particular spaces as regimes of truth. Almost as isolates.


Kola's latest path-breaking skill is found in his new form / style which he called "Vein Painting". This is an inventive and brilliant use of organic materials laid on a background which throws it out in relief such that lines of fibre are used to give imaginative meaning to form.


It is a stylistic as well as technical improvement on his use of organic fibre.


Kola Akintola's art works have become academic studies in some universities in Nigeria and Colorado university in the United States of America.


He has had several art workshops and exhibitions around the world, and represented Nigeria at some international art discusses in the West Coasts of Africa.


He runs an art studio cum art gallery and he is the Proprietor of "Institute Of Art Technology here in Ibadan, as an outlet to training the younger ones in proper artistic acquisition.

AKINTOLA, ADETAYO TO HEADLINE SECOND EDITION OF BUSARI AGBOLADE MEMORIAL LECTURE

Ibadan Book Club (IBC) in conjunction with AZA Artists and Writers Movement have set aside 30th day of July, 2022 to host two Ibadan based Artist and Writer, Mr. Kola Akintola and Mr. Gbenga Adetayo in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
A statement issued by both the Coordinator and Secretary of the club, Ayobami Odunyemi and Ayoade Hassanat said the event would take place at the Oyo State Library Board, Opposite Cocoa House, Ibadan by 11AM.
The July book reading also coincides with the club’s annual Busari Agbolade Memorial Lecture (second edition).
The Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Mr. Kola Akintola on the topic: “The Importance of Drawing and Painting in Writing”. Also Mr. Gbenga Adetayo will deliver a short talk on “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness: Making a Success of the Business of Life”.

GBENGA ADETAYO


Gbenga Adetayo is a visionary, a thinker and an investor. He is also the founder and CEO of MindScape Media Co. Ltd., who are the publishers of an online business and investment magazine called Terraculum magazine. The firm is based in Ibadan. Adetayo is deeply passionate about capitalism, but not the zero-sum game variety that is predicated on the wealth of the few having to derive from the toil of the many. He is married to a Senegalese woman and together they have two boys. Mr. Gbenga Adetayo also has a stepson.


Gbenga Adetayo was born on August 31, 1967 to the family of Mr. Joseph Adebayo Adetayo and Mrs. Florence Oluwadamilare Adetayo. His father is a descendant of the Owa Ajimoko ruling house of Ilesa, while his mother hails from Okitipupa. Gbenga’s father worked with the defunct Tate & Lyle Nigeria Plc. for 18 years where he rose to the position of Labour Manager before he was retrenched in 1983.

From a very early age, Gbenga Adetayo had the dream of starting a company and building it to become a multi-national, multi-divisional behemoth and that really gave a driving impetus to his outlook on life. What that did was to give his mind a sense of a higher purpose in life; giving it focus and considering life as a journey one has to undertake with all seriousness and with the mindset of accomplishing great things in the time one has to spend on earth. In the course of his educational career, he came under certain influences and cues that acted as guideposts to lead him in the direction of his dreams. For example, he started reading The Economist avidly from the age of twelve. He had also read all the story books in the school library by the time he got to class two in secondary school.


On his education, Gbenga Adetayo was educated at the Cherubim & Seraphim College, Ilorin and the University of Ilorin, where he majored in geology with a minor in physics. Beyond the honours degree which the university awarded him in 1985, he received a well-rounded education from the experience since he deliberately set out to open his mind widely to assimilate and internalize knowledge in their different branches as obtainable in the university. In the course of his development, he gravitated towards becoming more of a thinker than a doer, which dampened down the propensity to venality in his character.


Gbenga Adetayo minded to use the agency of that intellect to advance the cause of humanity by lifting people up everywhere: while in the pursuit of his personal interests, to also advance the interests of the wider society and that of all of humanity. For him, that really is the mark of a true capitalist. He is also minded to spread the message of the universality of certain human values; to exalt all of humanity; to treat people as people irrespective of any artificial barriers of the mind that human beings have crafted out of the unconscious ignorance of their minds to divide people and to put the vast majority of humanity down. This is the age of thinking the unthinkable and for him it is time to think differently about how we have managed our economic lives as a species.

Adetayo is completely apolitical, lacking in political skills. He has the ability for deep contemplation. His observation, reflection and engagement with the world of business, with markets, economies, the political sphere and the evolution of the human condition everywhere in the world over more than 50 years have given him a unique perspective on how capitalism should be evolving to better serve the material and spiritual interests of a greater percentage of humankind as time progresses.

Gbenga Adetayo started his working life at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, in 1988, as a Research Assistant in the Agroclimatology Department. He resigned in 1993 to start a business of his own as an IT Consultant. This he did until 1999 when he joined the service of the Nigerian Subsidiary of Saipem, the Italian oil and gas Contractor as a Senior Procurement Officer. He worked there until 2015 by which time he had risen to the position of Deputy Procurement Manager. His disengagement from Saipem was through a redundancy due to the decline in the market price of crude oil which gave rise to reduced workload in the company.


Gbenga Adetayo set up a pig farm immediately after leaving Saipem, as a prelude to what he imagined would grow to become a food company in line with his dream, but things did not work out as he had planned as his African compatriots, starting with his immediate younger brother worked hard at siphoning all the money he invested in the business.


But he remains undaunted as his journey into capitalism is a lifelong one, the journey being the destination. He has big dreams to contribute towards the bringing to life of a more benign, inclusive and more intelligent mode of capitalism that will evolve from the Western-conceived extreme short-term, zero-sum game mode. He understands capitalism deeply, starting from first principles.

PROFILE OF LATE BUSARI OLANIYI AGBOLADE


Busari Olaniyi Agbolade, a professional painter, steel fabricator was born on 13th July, 1948. He attended A.U.D Primary School, Ila Orangun from 1955-1960, L.A Secondary School, Ila Orangun from 1961-1963. He later enrolled as an apprentice under Adegoke Metal Construction Company from 1965 to 1967.

Busari Olaniyi Agbolade worked with the Niger West Construction Company, Niger Dam Authority and Uren Construction Engineering Company between 1969 and 1975. In 1976, he studied Aluminium and Copper Artistic Panel Beating under the tutelage of Yekini Agboola, an apprentice to Chief Ashiru Olatunde of Osogbo School.

He later joined the Abayomi Barber School of Thought of the University of Lagos to study painting in 1980. Elder Busari worked with the University of Lagos from 1980 and resigned his appointment in 1993 to become a full time artist.

Elder Busari Olaniyi Agbolade has participated in several exhibitions such as Barber School Exhibition sponsored by N.C.A.C in 1984, Benue State Art Exhibition – 1985, Lagos State Art Council – 1986, “ Man in Focus” exhibition by Federal Department of Culture – 1086, Exhibition of Paintings and Batiks by three Nigerian Artists in Dakar – Senegal 1987. Exhibition of Paintings, Batiks, Carvings and Ceramics by Six Nigerian Artists with 843 Studio Gallery, East New York, U.S.A from October-December 1988 Lagos State Chapter of S.N.A. Annual exhibition from 1991-2009.

Some of Elder Busari Olaniyi Agbolade’s commissioned works are:- Portraits of HRH Aholu Menu Toyi, Akran of Badagry, Orangun of Ila, Oba William Adetona Ayeni and other prominent Nigerians both home and abroad. Painting of “Mother and Child” commissioned by 843 Studio Gallery, New York, U.S.A.

IBADAN BOOK CLUB HOLDS SECOND EDITION OF BUSARI AGBOLADE MEMORIAL LECTURE ON SATURDAY, JULY 30

Ibadan Book Club in conjunction with AZA Artists and Writers Movement will hold their joint annual Busari Agbolade Memorial Lecture (second edition) in honour of one of its past Patrons and the former Chairman of the Movement, Busari Olaniyi Agbolade who passed away on the 9th of June, 2020 at the age of 72 years.


The lecture will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022.

He attended A.U.D Primary School, Ila Orangun from 1955-1960, L.A Secondary School, Ila Orangun from 1961-1963. He later enrolled as an apprentice under Adegoke Metal Construction Company from 1965 to 1967.

Busari Olaniyi Agbolade worked with the Niger West Construction Company, Niger Dam Authority and Uren Construction Engineering Company between 1969 and 1975. In 1976, he studied Aluminium and Copper Artistic Panel Beating under the tutelage of Yekini Agboola, an apprentice to Chief Ashiru Olatunde of Osogbo School.

He later joined the Abayomi Barber School of Thought of the University of Lagos to study painting in 1980. Elder Busari worked with the University of Lagos from 1980 and resigned his appointment in 1993 to become a full time artist.

Elder Busari Olaniyi Agbolade has participated in several exhibitions such as Barber School Exhibition sponsored by N.C.A.C in 1984, Benue State Art Exhibition – 1985, Lagos State Art Council – 1986, “ Man in Focus” exhibition by Federal Department of Culture – 1086, Exhibition of Paintings and Batiks by three Nigerian Artists in Dakar – Senegal 1987. Exhibition of Paintings, Batiks, Carvings and Ceramics by Six Nigerian Artists with 843 Studio Gallery, East New York, U.S.A from October-December 1988 Lagos State Chapter of S.N.A. Annual exhibition from 1991-2009.

Some of Elder Busari Olaniyi Agbolade’s commissioned works are:- Portraits of HRH Aholu Menu Toyi, Akran of Badagry, Orangun of Ila, Oba William Adetona Ayeni and other prominent Nigerians both home and abroad. Painting of “Mother and Child” commissioned by 843 Studio Gallery, New York, U.S.A.
