Foreign Affairs / Trump Says US Will Prioritize Christian Refugees by tafrica(m): 11:54am On Jan 28, 2017
Washington (CNN)
President Donald Trump said in a new interview Friday that persecuted Christians will be given priority over other refugees seeking to enter the United States, saying they have been "horribly treated."
Speaking with the Christian Broadcasting Network, Trump said that it had been "impossible, or at least very tough" for Syrian Christians to enter the United States.

"If you were a Muslim you could come in, but if you were a Christian, it was almost impossible and the reason that was so unfair -- everybody was persecuted, in all fairness -- but they were chopping off the heads of everybody but more so the Christians. And I thought it was very, very unfair. So we are going to help them."

Trump did not name a reason or offer any evidence about why the agencies that vet refugees, including the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department, would have prioritized Muslim refugees over Christians.

According to a report by the non-partisan Pew Research Center, however, 99% of the nearly 12,600 Syrians granted refugee status last year were Muslims. Less than 1% were Christian. Syria's population is 87% Muslim and 10% Christian, according to the CIA World Fact Book.

Also on Friday, Trump signed an executive order explicitly freezing refugee applications from Syria. It's unclear how his pledge to help persecuted Christians from that country will accord with the order.
The United States admitted a record number of 38,901 Muslim refugees in 2016, according to a study conducted by Pew. But nearly the same number of Christians, 37,521 were also admitted.

At the same time, many Christian groups that resettle refugees in the United States decry the persecution of their brethren overseas, but said the country should not give favor to fellow Christians or bar Muslims.

"We would resist that strongly," Scott Arbeiter, president of World Relief, the humanitarian arm of the National Association of Evangelicals and one of nine agencies that partner with the federal government to resettle refugees.

"Some of the most vulnerable people in the world right now are Muslims. If we say no Muslim should be let in, we are denying the humanity and dignity of people made in the image of God."
Arbeiter said he and his group have tried unsuccessfully to meet with the new Trump administration to discuss refugee policy.

A study conducted by the libertarian Cato Institute found that between 1975-2015, the United States admitted approximately 700,000 asylum-seekers and 3.25 million refugees. Four asylum-seekers and 20 refugees later became terrorists and launched attacks on US soil.

"The chance of being murdered in a terrorist attack committed by an asylum-seeker was one in 2.73 billion a year," wrote the study's author, Alex Nowrasteh. "The chance of being murdered in a terrorist attack committed by a refugee is one in 3.64 billion a year."

Jobless miscreant.

Let me help you since your brain can't decipher what I posted; the pix with Atiku was taken when Buhari was sick and was in London sometimes last year, that was also the time Tinubu went to see him.

Buhari is wearing same cloth and same cap in both pictures, so both pics must probably have been taken in that time. Or you're telling us that is Buhari's official cloth and cap in London?

BTW, you sounded so pained and frustrated.

Yes I said so because his grammatical blunder is ''pardonable'' LOL! And I think he has corrected himself, so next time he should not use did and visited in the same sentence since the verbs are already activated in the past mode. They can't be used simultaneously in a sentence.

I understand you were trying to be a good brother by defending the poster, God bless you.

But it's still an error though.

We learn everyday, no one is an island of knowledge.

It's good the poster knows when to use "does" and "did" he just needs to know he doesn't have to worry himself about the form of the following verb, just make it present and plural verb.

And to those throwing tantrums at him, may God forgive them.

I think there is nothing wrong with his grammar..

He has- 2nd person singular(I don't think it should have been ''he have'')

Visited- Past tense(meaning Atiku could have gone there few days ago which implies the use of past tense- visited)

*Although he shouldn't have used did and visited in the same sentence since DID has activated past mode in the sentence.

Since you know your last paragraph, why did you now say he didn't make a grammatical blunder?

Having used "does" and "did", the following verb should have been present tense and plural verb.

Like Does he has(have) permanent dressing code or did atiku visited (visit) him too, just curious

They will rather continue making dollars scarce and sharing among themselves and not mind about the inherent inflation that affects common man with that action so far they make their own money.

Business / Whistleblower Gives Leadersng Damning 'Evidence' Of Corruption In CBN by tafrica(m): 5:53pm On Jan 26, 2017
Guys, read this, then you will know #OccupyCBN is a noble call

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been implementing a questionable, and possibly corrupt, policy in its allocation and sale of foreign currency to Nigerians, LeadersNG can exclusively reveal. Documents made available to us reveal the arbitrary fixing of different exchange rates for transactions.

One of the documents made available to LeadersNG, the “BANK UTILIZATION REPORT ON 60:40 RULE FOR OCTOBER 2016”, shows stark contrasts in the exchange rates applied in the allocation of forex to different companies and individuals. The document shows no applicable pattern or matrix used in calculating exchange rates or selecting the companies or individuals who got low or high rates.

Details of this report show that during the month of October 2016 some companies were allocated forex at exchange rates as low as N0.61 to $1 in one particular transaction while others received forex at exchange rates as high as N470 to $1. The report also reveals the allocation of forex to individuals and companies for reasons varying from importation of a variety of products to family maintenance allowances, mortgage payments, medical travel and school fees/other bills associated with educational expenditure.

Our source is adamant that many powerful forces within the CBN and Nigerian political circles are taking advantage of CBN’s policies to make huge profits by taking advantage of CBN’s policies to make huge profits by purchasing forex from CBN at low prices then selling at black market rates in the black market.CBN’s policies have currently led to a disparity between the official exchange rate and the parallel market rates of almost N200 per $1 .

In October 2016, CGC Nigeria Limited whose address is listed as Kubwa Road, Abuja received an allocation of $81,392.59 at an exchange rate of N47.50/$1 to import floor drains. In a stark contrast, in one of its several transactions, Lafarge Africa Plc of paid an exchange rate of N428/$1 to get $987,214.18.

On its part, two particular transactions of the Nigerian Breweries Plc stood out. In these two transactions conducted through Rand Bank of South Africa, NB Plc was able to purchase $3193 and $1272 for the purchase of “Raw Materials Hi Cone” at N1.20/$1.

The document also revealed that MACADAMS Baking Systems Limited purchased $57,365.02 for the purchase of baking ingredients at N23/$1. Our investigation into the management structure of the Company revealed that the Chairman of the Board of Directors of MACADAMS Baking Systems Limited is Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN). Chief Awomolo is also currently counsel to Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The disparity in exchange rate also applied to individuals. For instance, Adebolanle Badejo purchased $4,372.05 at N23.34/$1 to service credit card payments. Farida Hassan Gimba received purchased $14,621 at an exchange rate of $48/$1 for educational expenses starkly contrasting with the rate of N370/$1 Fatai Odesile paid for the same purpose.
Abas Alhassan was able to purchase $805.73 at N85.24/$1 to make mortgage payments. In stark contrast, Akintunde Rowland Babatunde purchased $1,972.60 at an exchange rate of N404.84 for the same purposes. In another example, while Jigba Zahradeen Saleh and Nnogo Jane were able to purhcase $ 4,278.65 at N87.52 and $365.68 at N23.04/$1 respectively to pay for educational expenses, Isioma Asiodu Otughwor had to purchase $4,794.41 at N405.22 for the same purpose.

In similar transactions Kennedy Onyeali, Managing Director of All Seasons Mediacom purchased $9,752 at N30/$1 for the importation of an item simply referred to as HF101, while Alhaji Babagana Mohammed Sheriff, who we believe is a nephew to factional chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) – Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and an in-law of President Muhammadu Buhari, was permitted to purchase $ $35,338.69 at the rate of N101.5/$1 for the importation of an item listed as “invisible”.

Foreigners were also able to benefit from the purchase of forex at low exchange rates. A person simply named as Paula was able to purchase $834.15 at N23.35/$1, while Paula Coetzee was able to purchase $1,563.06 at N23.11/$1. Both transactions were conducted through Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc and were for family maintenance allowances for expatriates.

Similarly William Le Roux and Debra Ann Le Roux were permitted to purchase $13,093.29 and $9,378.37 at N22.63 and N23.11 respectively. Both transactions were conducted through Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc and were for family maintenance allowances for expatriates.

In stark contrast to all this, World Wide Commercial Venture Limited was permitted to purchase $1, 462,480.83 at the rate of N425/$1 to purchase life saving drugs and pharmaceutical products. Its 24 transactions in October 2016 were conducted through Zenith Bank.

The lack of a pattern or formula used to calculate the exchange rate used for allocations lends credence to allegations of racketeering and dubious allocations of Forex to close family and friends on the part of CBN officials.

CBN has recently come under flak from many quarters for its foreign exchange policies. Last August, former CBN governor and the Emir of Kano, HRM Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, condemned sharp practices in the allocation and forex which he said was capable of distorting the market and damaging the economy. He was particularly critical of CBN’s policies which he said were creating emergency billionaires.

On January 13th, 2016 a civil society group carried out a peaceful procession to the CBN headquarters in Abuja to protest the negative effects of its foreign exchange policies, the rising price of essential goods and services owing to exchange rates and alleged corruption in the implementation of the apex bank’s policies.

One of the organisers of the protest, Mr. Deji Adeyanju, alleged currency speculation amongst the top echelon of the apex bank. Mr. Adeyanju alleged that many senior officials use various fronts to apply for and obtain forex which they then sell on the black market at higher rates.

A few days ago, while speaking to journalists at the 2017 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland Vice President Yemi Osinbajo alluded to the negative consequences of the disparity between the official exchange rate and the parallel market rate.

Below are links to download the original 60:40 report leaked to LEADERSNG and a summary of the most fraudulent forex transactions that took place in the month of october 2016.

Reps members from NW passed votes of confidence on Buhari.
I ask on what area(s) do we have confidence on Buhari?;

vote of confidence Buhari would fight corruption while Bachir, COS, Buratai, Ameachi, Fashola and the rest are free after several loads of corruption stories are hanging on their necks? When Buhari haa even gone a step ahead of GEJ by defending corruption (Bachir)

Vote of confidence economy would improve while companies are closing down almost on daily basis due to forex scarcity?

Vote of confidence Naira will improve when it is now romancing with N500/$ from N198 or thereabout we had in prev govt?

vote of confidence that lives are more secured when IDPs are being raped and bombed while Fulani herdsmen kill in SKaduna and across the nation, Biafra and Shiites are being murdered?

Can anyone educate on which ares(s) does Buhari inspire confidence?

Has FG finally sold those jets or they just put up that charade to make it look like this FG is lean and not flamboyant or has president backtracked on the plan?

Who has heard anything about the sale?

Our Military are enemies of the state.

1. They killed Shiites.
2. They killed and still kill IPOB.
3. They sometimes ago bombed a creek in SS killing many civilians.
4. They reportedly raped IDP women on many occassions.
5. They bombed IDPs at Rann several times.
6. They also bombed IDPs at Gamboru Ngala.

Which military 'accidentally' bombed civilians several times even on its land?

Thank God head of Gambian military had to say "There is no military solution to political problem" to cool down the tension in Gambia and stop military invasion, our military men would have gone to Gambia to 'accidentally' bomb several Gambians or even destroyed their presidential villa because they wanted to eject Jammeh.
Our military are always thirsty for human blood. This has worsened under Buhari

Lalasticlala,

Don't you think the popular statement "accidental bombing" is a ploy to prevent investigation in this matter.

We have seen several aerial videos taken by Nigerian Air force, we clearly see images of people on the ground. They couldn't have denied not sighting several tents in the camp. Besides this;

Is the camp located in the forest?

Will Nigerian military claim ignorance of locations and addresses of all IDP camps when we have soldiers in all these camps, so how would Nigerian Air force or the pilot, as the case may be, not have had the map on its GPS?
Politics / Nigeria: Satellite Imagery Shows Strikes On Settlement-hrw by tafrica(m): 8:43am On Jan 20, 2017
Here is a report from Human Rights Watch
Human Rights Watch reviewed satellite imagery in the town of Rann, Kala Balge Borno State, recorded on the morning after the attack and identified two distinct areas of destruction in densely populated areas on the western side of the town that are consistent with the detonation of multiple air dropped munitions. At least 35 structures were destroyed in the attack, including shelters for displaced people.

(Abuja) – Nigerian authorities should conduct a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation into the January 17, 2017 airstrikes that hit a settlement for displaced people who had fled Boko Haram, killing at least 70 people, including nine aid workers, and wounding at least 120, Human Rights Watch said today. The government, which has stated that the Nigerian air force accidentally carried out the strikes, should compensate those who were injured and the families of those killed as a result of any violation of international humanitarian law or the right to life.

Human Rights Watch reviewed satellite imagery in the town of Rann, Kala Balge Borno State, recorded on the morning after the attack and identified two distinct areas of destruction in densely populated areas on the western side of the town that are consistent with the detonation of multiple air-dropped munitions. At least 35 structures were destroyed in the attack, including shelters for displaced people.

“The Nigerian military has taken an important and rare step in accepting responsibility for this horrible attack,” said Mausi Segun, senior Nigeria researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Now it should go further by explaining how it came to attack a displacement settlement, and by compensating the wounded and relatives of those who lost their lives.”

Although there is no clearly delineated displacement camp in Rann, the town includes hundreds of tents for displaced people located among residential buildings at the two sites that were hit. The tents are easily visible from the air, making it difficult to understand how an accident of this nature could have occurred. The presence of what appears to be a large Nigerian military compound on the edge of town, 100 meters from one of the impact sites, raises further questions, as the military would have been expected to know that the area was filled with civilians and to take adequate precautions not to harm them during any operation targeting Boko Haram fighters who might have been in the area.

Even if Boko Haram fighters were present in or near the settlement at the time, the Nigerian military should have ensured all of their attacks were targeting military objectives, and that they took all feasible precautions to minimize harm to civilians, Human Rights Watch said.

The investigation should determine the causes of the attack and the military should make the necessary changes, including in its planning of operations to minimize the risk of similar attacks in the future, Human Rights Watch said.

According to the Nigeria Air Force, one of its fighter jets launched an “accidental air strike” during operations in pursuit of Boko Haram fighters. The commander of the military’s counterinsurgency operations in the northeast, Major General Lucky Irabor, told media that he ordered the mission because Boko Haram fighters were gathering in the area. Two soldiers were also wounded, and an investigation would take place, he said, but it is not clear by whom and in what time frame.

Aid groups reported earlier that the area has been inaccessible to aid agencies until recently due to fighting, and the military was in charge of delivering aid to displaced people. A firefight between the military and Boko Haram fighters in Rann on December 30, 2016 might have contributed to the apparent haste with which Major General Irabor ordered the airstrikes to deal with an alleged report of the rebel group’s gathering in the area.

Among those killed were nine people working for humanitarian organizations. The head of emergencies at Doctors Without Borders, which has worked in Nigeria since 1971, told media that the army had full control of the Rann at the time of the attack, including checking those who came in and out. The organization strongly condemned the attack, in which it said three workers of a Cameroonian company it had contracted to provide services were killed.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society said that six of its staff and volunteers providing humanitarian services to displaced people were killed and another 13 were injured.

The tragic incident is not the first military airstrike that apparently killed civilians during the fight against Boko Haram. On February 28, 2014, a Nigeria military aircraft dropped munitions on Daglun, a Borno village, killing 20 civilians, mostly older residents, according to media reports. On March 16, 2014, a similar military attack on Kayamla village, less than 10 kilometers outside Maiduguri, reportedly killed 10 civilians. Media reports quoted villagers there as saying they had told security forces about the presence of some suspected Boko Haram fighters near the village, but the airstrike came days later, after the insurgents had abandoned the area. In both attacks, the military denied knowledge of civilian casualties.

On January 16, 2017, the United Nations estimated that 2.4 million Nigerians had been displaced in their country as a result of Boko Haram’s abuses and Nigerian military operations.

Even if there is no evidence that the airstrikes were a deliberate attack on the Rann displaced persons’ settlement, which would be a war crime, the bombing, apparently not being directed at a specific military target, would be indiscriminate, therefore violating international humanitarian law. The attack would also appear to have violated the right to life under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and other international human rights laws applicable in Nigeria, including if those planning the operation did not take sufficient steps to minimize the risk to civilian lives. Nigeria has an obligation under international law to ensure transparent and independent investigations into the apparent violations, and to pay compensation to the victims and their families for the injury caused by any violation.

“Authorities should ensure effective and speedy medical treatment for the injured victims of this unfortunate incident,” Segun said. “And they should ensure prompt, adequate and effective compensation for all the victims and their families of any violations of international law.”
