If you ask the telecommunication companies, of the 121million subscribers, half of the lines may not be active. Personally, I have 4 sim cards that I do not use at all. Secondly, sim packs are now sold for N100 to N200 so it is affordable and thanks to China and used phones, people can afford to buy cheap phones. Some subscribers only recharge N100 or N200 once or twice in a month, so the number of subscribers cannot be judiciously used to measure poverty level in Nigeria. There are many Nigerians who live on less than $1 a day. The minimum wage is N18000, if a family man with a wife and three children earns N18000 minimum wage a month, if the wife is unemployed it means N18000 divided by 5, that is N3600 for a head in a month, N3600 divided by 30 days is N120 a day which is less than a dollar. There are many Nigerians who earn less than N18000 a month and they also have dependents. Go up north and see millions of almajiris, who live in abject poverty, not relative poverty. |
Jman06: ASUU is just playing partisan politics with the future of Nigerian youths. Nigerian students should blame ASUU for the lingering strike. Why? Is it because ASUU is the only guilty party here? Is the FG a victim? Has ASUU not agreed to call off the strike if the Government is able to implement the resolutions of their NEC meeting? Isn't there a planned meeting between the leadership of ASUU and the President? ASUU gave the FG three conditions; • commitment from the President that any review or reconsideration or renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement will not substantially affect the Agreement which is the cause of the ongoing strike; • immediate payment of all outstanding salary arrears and allowances of varsity teachers without victimisation; and •a written commitment from the President that the Federal Government will commit N225billion annually to the funding of universities for the next four years. They have already agreed that the 2009 agreement can be reviewed to some extent. They also agreed to the N1.2trillion offered by FG. The only disagreement is the immediate payment of salary arrears. I believe the FG ought to have waited to see the outcome of ASUU's meeting with the President which should hold either this week or the next before this empty threat. If half of the lecturers decides to call the bluff of the FG and they are sacked, it will take us years to replace them with new and competent ones. Note that the universities are currently short of staff so it will be foolhardy to sack more lecturers. Continuous dialogue is the only way forward, this divide and conquer approach will not solve the myriads of problems in our university system. The students are the victim here and not FG. The two sides are at fault. |
This is a country where N75billion was allocated for data capturing machines for voters registration, even after spending such an humongous amount and biometric data collection we still find ourselves in situations where names suddenly disappear from the voters register simply because some government officials are in the habit of tampering with it. How are we sure our thieving government officials won't manipulate our data/information to commit fraud? When bankers who are expected to abide by strict ethics connive with fraudsters to commit ATM fraud, why should I then trust our dishonest and ever-swelling cult of thieves in government? |
Sincere 9gerian: Dont you know that the govt has intelligence information that some lecturers are already willing to resume work? Wait till events unfold in the coming weeks.Forget any silly intelligence report. After the NEC meeting of ASUU, we were told that 60% of the striking lecturers/university chapters are in support of calling off the strike provided government is able to meet their new requests/conditions. So its public knowledge that ASUU is willing to call off the strike. The FG is trying to employ the usual tactics of divide and conquer, the same tactic successive governments have used in dividing the people of Nigeria for their personal gains. So trying to break the ranks of ASUU or any other labor union is not new. Why is government afraid to implement ASUU's new resolutions? The sack threat is a display of insensitivity and against the principle of public bargaining. ASUU already submitted the resolutions from their NEC meeting to the FG and they are waiting for a planned meeting with the President, so why is government after waiting for 5 months threatening to sack lecturers when the President is yet to grant them audience as promised? The biggest problem is that of heavy mistrust, ASUU is only being cautious by demanding that the President and top Government functionaries commit themselves to the new agreement in writing. ASUP and other bodies who called off their strikes are already issuing new ultimatums because the government is yet to fulfill the agreements made months after such were reached. I insist that Government is not a victim here and ASUU is not entirely right with her approach, display of brute force from government will not yield any positive result. |

Anyone with half a brain would know that the threat to sack the striking lecturers even when our universities are presently under-staffed is an idle one and a display of empty bravado. Even if there is a ready-made market to recruit new lecturers from our large army of unemployed graduates, it will take the government a very long time to replace the sacked ones or will former lecturers turned politicians like Jerry Gana and co relinquish their political lives to return back to the classroom? Besides, this threat is already 5 months late, sacking the lecturers now will put the university system into a bigger turmoil than what we have now. Are we just going to discard some of the very few erudite minds that we still have left to start with those with little or no experience? If the lecturers are sacked, are we planning to immediately replace them with ghosts(Nigeria is a country of ghosts, from ghost workers to ghost boko harams)? Won't universities advertise the vacant positions/offices? Won't it take time for those interested to apply? Won't it take time for the universities to complete the whole recruitment exercise, not to talk of a country riddled with bureaucratic problems? These processes will surely take time, even more than the students have already spent at home. The best bet is to continue with the negotiation, neither ASUU nor Government is a victim here, the real victims are the students. |
awodman: Since then have the case been heard for the 1st time by the presiding judge?..Prolly this guys saw they had no Case..maybe you need to read thisI have no means of knowing if they've assigned a jugde to the case or not and we both know that our judicial process is slow, and perhaps both parties may have settled for an out of court settlement. I really do not have a problem with the privatization exercise rather my objection is based on the character of some of the investors who are no-gooders eg Emeka Offor. |
ROSSIKE: You can say this stuff about virtually every country on earth. Those who win in these deals are always close to political power. In the US, George Bush, Dick Cheney etc had links to companies that benefitted from supplying weapons for the Iraq war. Bill Gates can walk into the White House anytime he wants without invitation, unlike the average American. It's the way of the world!Americans are still groaning under the strangulating jackboot of Crony capitalism, in fact, crony capitalism was one of the factors that led to the 2008 financial crisis. Crony capitalism goes hand in hand with higher unemployment and it expands the gap between the rich and the poor. We need to decide if what we want is crony capitalism or a free market capitalism. The difference between Nigeria and the US is that, in the US the companies/investors that receive such benefits/favors are often well established and technically competent but in Nigeria, excluding a very few genuine investors, briefcase companies or businessmen who have never shown any competence(both financial and technical), and who have no track record of excellence in past endeavors order than pocketing our wealth through well-organized fraudulent schemes in cahoot with their promoters in Government are most often the favored ones. |
taharqa: @take dat, go and bid for d Refineries yrself abeg. Is anybody holding you??..... As long as d Process is Open and Transparent like was d case of d Privatisation of PHCN (I hope so), I do not care who wins d bid. SR can shove whateva other shenanigans of theirs, if it doesn't address d Process itself, down its azzz....What a fo0lish post. You see no wrong in handing out our public wealth to the same forces(past and present government officials) that have deprived and plundered Nigeria and the well-connected fraudulent entrepreneurs who started from nearly nothing but got rich through participation in the market via connections to the Government and have continued to perpetuate heinous economic crimes against the people of Nigeria? Why don't we just legalize corruption then, if we don't see any wrong in using looted funds to acquire public assets? Some of these men ought to be in jail if Nigeria was a serious country. We are merely producing a group of businessmen whose ties to the state and political establishment put them in position to take advantage of the system for 'Personal Gains'. Privatization is only a means to an end and not an end in itself. When folks like Emeka Offor who never showed 'any sign of competence or capability' in his past dealings, such as the TAM of refineries, fraudulent gas pipeline deals and many others is still allowed to buy off public assets all in the name of privatization, should we then expect efficiency? |
awodman: But this power Privatization was to a very large extent very pure...The rules were tough and strictly adhered to..alot of check and balances was introduced..all this can be evidenced by the minimal or no Litigations that have trailed the process...http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/reserved-bidder-sues-bpe-ncp-over-enugu-disco/ A briefcase company can meet the guidelines and outbid established firms as long as it is being promoted by top government officials. Insider information will surely give the briefcase company an edge. |
awodman: What's your alternative to making the best out of this Moribund Government corporations?I am not against privatization in its purest form. I am only afraid of how this relatively small cabal of fraudulent businessmen that have exploted and deprived Nigerians over the years and their abettors in Government are gradually selling the whole of Nigeria to themselves using our collective wealth to buy them. |
Why won't he remain in PDP? He and his sons have voluminous case files in the office of the EFCC, and with EFCC about to prosecute his sons, his best bet is to remain in the PDP so that further action can be stalled. Its more of politics of self-preservation than principle, he knows once he is able to reach a compromise with the President, the EFCC will drop all the cases. |
Privatization in Nigeria has fostered the worst manifestation of crony capitalism. I won't be surprised if those who are going to win the bid for these refineries are the same characters who recently bought off the privatized GENCO's and DISCO's. The on-going privatization of state owned assets to cronies reminds one of Russia, a place where large scale privatization of state owned assets resulted to a situation where a good deal of National Wealth fell into the hands of a relatively small group of so called Business Oligarchs, and the wealth gap increased dramatically. These forces of high privilege and regression who should be in jail for accumulating public wealth at the expense of the people and their fraudulent business tycoon allies who have committed heinous economic crimes against the people of Nigeria in the past are the ones buying these state owned assets. The Forbes promoted fraudulent billionaires and corrupt Government officials will keep on getting richer while ordinary Nigerians continues to feed on hopelessness. |
Is Lamido staying in order to have the corruption allegations laid against him and his sons dropped? |
Sincere 9gerian: Some of the so called G-7 governors are not in firm control of their state. The governors of Kwara, Adamawa and Rivers are perfect examples. So Kwara State governor is not in firm control of his state? Isn't Saraki also of APC? Your examples are not perfect. PDP still remains the problem of Nigeria, it is the ruling party, if and whenever another party takes over from PDP the party will also be considered as the problem of Nigeria till we get it right. |
When will ordinary Nigerians set aside their differences and unite to fight our common enemy, our thieving political class who have drained the vitality out of us, and have not offered Nigeria any tonic for greatness? The only good from this merger is that our democracy is gradually evolving. Its now a balance of terror. Nigerians should either join a political party or form a new one instead of waiting for an elusive deliverer in the mold of the biblical Moses to lead us to the promised land. No real changes can be made outside of the political arena. |
I never said so... My point, APC shouldn't have taken those bunch of corrupt losers into the strong opposition they are tryna build in the political system. They are self-centred and in no time, they will manifest
Show us one politician who isn't self-centered! Politics is about numbers that is why parties go into coalition, merger and all sorts of alignments. |

Why recommend 'administrative caution' for her to be more diligent in future approvals, since according to the findings of the committee she did not commit any infraction and the procurement followed due process? Administrative Caution does mean she is guilty of wrongdoing. It is an official warning given in certain circumstances as an alternative to prosecution. So on what basis did the committee recommend 'Administrative Caution' if according to this report, she is not guilty of any the allegations? The committee itself was just another distraction. The constitution of a committee when we already have statutory bodies like EFCC, ICPC and Police anti-fraud unit to do the job was a red-herring. It was always going to be a half-hearted investigation. |
Story yi ti fe ma long ju ![]() No time to dwell on a one-sided story! |
ujoinme: Thank you, now you are accepting the truth. He did demand that the ECA be Shared to the state and the FG did exactly that. why is he crying? weather it was $1billion or $5Billion that was shared the fact is that each state got a percentage of the amount shared including amaechi's Rivers state. So we all know where the ECA money went, to the states. You agreed what? Try look for fellow co-travelers to play this game of obfuscation. Is $1billion same as $5billion? I am always in support of probity and accountability, the FG should give account likewise Amaechi. |
lincolnj88: u are just anoda die hard haterz of gej..... I trust My gej and his cabal....... D only.ansa ameachi will get is silence, because its d best ansa given to a foollll.....Medieval era ignoramus, so states are responsible for security on inland waterways? Is it on the concurrent list? I am an hater of GEJ because I demand that the government answer the questions raised by Amaechi which concerns you and I? A feeble-minded clown with a silly sense of concordance. |
ujoinme: Dude was it not the same amaechi that threaten the FG with fire and brimstone if it did not share the ECA to states? get your facts right! the FG did just what Amaechi and his faction of NGF asked for from the FG and now they are crying wolf.Did he deny that the NGF requested for the withdrawal of $1b? This is when the Governors demanded for $1billion, kindly provide where they demanded for $5billion! http://tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/news/news-headlines/item/984-govs-demand-$1bn-from-excess-crude-account-nigerias-crude-oil-wells-to-dry-up-in-2053-expert.html |
OdionOdion: That was the meet attended by NGF delegation led by Gov Jang to Aso Rock after the commissioning of their secretariat.Try and find out from Gov Ameachi if he attended that meeting and if no why?.Gov Ameachi wasn't elected to govern Nigeria but a sud(Rivers),Nigerians elected a humble and intelligent man Goodluck Jonathan to be their leader.Gov Ameachi should wait and Jonathan to complete the mandate given to him.Is Amaechi a member of the Jang led NGF? Is Jang elected to govern Nigeria? Each State is a stake holder, Plateau cannot decide for Lagos or Rivers likewise Rivers cannot decide for Plateau. The ECA is not a FG account, it is a Federation Account. The President cannot unilaterally make decisions to deduct from the ECA to augment the shortfall in revenue simply because he is incapable of curbing crude oil theft. The problem is that there is no synergy, and you can't lay the blame solely at the feet of Amaechi, the President himself is guilty. If you guys want to attack Amaechi, I am less concerned but he raised genuine questions! |
lincolnj88:You can't even quote a verifiable source to back your claims, huh? If you have no proof to support your claims just drop it! This is not a place where you bandy figures anyhow. Is Amaechi in charge of security on our territorial waters abi waterways? |
ujoinme: No The Issue is about the crybaby Gov. Amaechi who lead the govs. forum to campaign against the FG for the release of the ECA to states. and when the FG decided to harken to his demand and shared the money in order to offset the dwindling allocation to states due to oil theft which the same amaechi was on record crying about how rivers state was not recieving enough allocations from the FG.Amaechi did not deny asking together with other governors for the deduction of $1billion from the ECA, but is $1billion same as $5billion? http://tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/news/news-headlines/item/984-govs-demand-$1bn-from-excess-crude-account-nigerias-crude-oil-wells-to-dry-up-in-2053-expert.html No one has been able to provide where the Governors demanded for the withdrawal of $5billion from the ECA. Forget about Amaechi's shenanigans, we as Nigerians must know how the economy is being managed. Lots of accusations and counter accusations in the news these days, NOI should answer the questions not for Amaechi but for all Nigerians. Openness is the antidote to the constant criticism! |
theoctopus: There is no attention on NOI. If you think anyone can just come out like Sahara reporters, make frivolous and ridiculous claims and NOI should leave her job and be replying them, then you are deceiving yourself. She is a busy woman unline Amaechi. How many times have you seen her running around politicking and attending Nollywood parties? You tried to distract with Boko Haram, it didnt work, what makes you think throwing fake accusations around will make a difference? Keep tryin@Lastpope, the pin-headed rabble rouser! Is it a crime to ask questions from the vile cult that administer the country? Only blissfully stuppiid mor0ns like you are smug and content with how the wealth of the nation is being plundered! |
Why are people trying to divert attention from NOI? Yes, Amaechi has his own baggage of dirts but the attention here is on NOI. |
