PoliticsRe: ASUU Strike: Government Extends Ultimatum For University Lecturers To Resume by takedat(m):
wesley80: Great move by the FG. Smarter people can see through ASUU. Why didnt Fagge and his thieving crew demand for salaries they didnt work for while they were negotiating with the President? Why have they now included it as amandatory condition before the strike is called off? Isnt it obvious that the other conditions are mere covers for their greedy agenda of receiving money they didnt work for? Whoever heard of labour leaders being victimized by the govt? If the NLC and TUC leaders have not faced victimization despite theirnumerous strike actions what on earth is ASUU guardin against? What if the AG signs the agreement, would that stop the govt from reneging if they want to? These are mere smokescreens, what ASUU really want is the 5 months salary they didnt work for period!
greedy oaves
According to the ASUU chairman, the condition for payment of their outstanding salaries was included in what was agreed with the President. Why shouldn't ASUU make it as a mandatory condition? ASUP went on strike for close to 6 months, government did not stop the payment of their salaries for the duration of the strike, same with NASU and health workers. Why was it that Government invoked a 'No work, No pay' clause when it was ASUU's turn? So what is good for the goose isn't good for the gander? Even our unproductive public officials receive their salaries for doing nothing.

We know that one of the reasons why the strike have been dragged on for long is due to lack of trust. If Government truly believes that the non-victimization clause isn't a big deal, why is Government reluctant to sign the MoU?

If the AG signs, there will no be denial later that Government did not agree to it. ASUU did not make it compulsory that it must be done by the AG, it said, any top Government official 'preferably' the AG. If Government believes that they will keep to their promise, why is Government reluctant to append its signature at least as a sign of good faith?

No matter how hard you keep up with the smear campaign against ASUU and in defense of Government even though the strike has lingered for so long which is quite unfortunate, those with good conscience will agree that ASUU had a good reason for embarking on strike. If ASUU did not go on strike, Government had no intention of injecting more funds for the revitalization of the universities. Why is it that unions have to go on strike before Government decides on doing the right thing? If the govt releases the fund and we are able to build more hostels, lecture theaters/halls and improve on the infrastructural deficits in our universities, its all thanks to ASUU's strike. I hope they(FG and ASUU) resolve the impasse before the 9th.

Brainless toady! 176 countries were sampled in 2012 and 177 in 2013. When was the last time we ranked in the last ten? We've not featured in the last 10 in post 2005, in 2006 we ranked 142 out of 163 nations. We have long moved out of the last 10 slots.

What is shameful here is that we moved downwards from 139th in 2012 to 144th in 2013. We should be making progress in our fight to consign corruption to the dustbin but this CPI says otherwise.

Who are the bad belles who see noting good in Nigeria? Those making excuses for corruption or those who believe we are not doing enough?
PoliticsRe: 2013 World Corruption Index: Nigeria Ranks 144 Among 177countries by takedat(m):
I see no difference between those who see this(144th out of 177 countries) as a sign of progress, and a pupil who in the previous term took 139th position in a class of 176 and the following term takes the position of 144 in a class of 177 and the pupil sees it as a remarkable improvement! That pupil would be described as a dunce, so same should apply to the totally ignorant adults on this thread.

Sincere 9gerian: The politically and ethnically motivated false alarm and mis-information from Punch et al all through the year is enough to make Nigeria drop to the bottom on the ladder of perception of corruption.
As usual, you will always find someone or something to blame for the woes and incompetence of government. Has corruption reduced in public service? Will the corruption perception of our unemployed graduates who are fraudulently charged certain amount for recruitment into government agencies reduce or isn't that a corrupt practice? Or are Nigerians too blind to see the expensive lifestyle of government officials? Will the President's cavalier attitude towards corruption reduce the peoples' perception? Will all the half-hearted investigations that gets abandoned because of the President's hidden hand reduce the peoples perception? Or is it with all the allegations of cascading graft within his own rank? Will all these reduce the peoples corruption perception?
PoliticsRe: 2013 World Corruption Index: Nigeria Ranks 144 Among 177countries by takedat(m):
Slizbeat: Fight against corruption is different from corruption index.

Whereas one ranks you according to the dedication you have in fighting corruption, the other ranks you according to the present level of corruption in the system ranging from politicians to public servants and all citizens.
Don't confuse us here bro! Which one ranks you according to the dedication you have in fighting corruption? Transparency International does Corruption Perception Index, Global Corruption Reports, Global Corruption Barometer and Bribe-Payer Index. None of the listed is accepted globally and commonly effective than the CPI. The CPI is based on how corrupt the country's public sector is perceived to be. If the Nigerian Government is fighting corruption, won't the people perceive/know it? So, if Nigeria dropped from 136 to 144, it means we are not making any progress with all 'our Government dedication in fighting corruption', rather there is a perception that corruption have increased in the public sector.

karl max: but do u agree that at one time we were among those countries mentioned in your post? When nigeria was among the 10 most corrupt countriesin the world. If u agree then u would agree that their has been improvement and more needs to be done unless ur an hypocrite. The fg is doing alot to curb corruption in their ministries by following the due process law to the letter and passing the foi bill. If the state governors can do same i guess our rating would improve. Lagos state for instance has refused adhere to the FOI laws claiming it only apply to the federal government but instead administer oath of secrecy to member of the goverment and heads of state ministries now tell me how our rating would improve when our state governors hide their activities in secrecy. What are they hidding if not corruption and corrupt deals
All this one na story. You tried to paint a picture that Nigeria has fared better in this year's corruption perception index which isn't true.

How can you claim we have improved in our fight against corruption according to this newly released corruption perception index, when last year we ranked 139th and this year we are ranked 144th? Is that an improvement or regression? You believe not sharing the last ten positions with war torn countries is an improvement?

Corruption is still ever-present in our public sector, it is the bread and butter of business activity in the civil service. How many public officials have we successfully prosecuted, how many have been sentenced to jail on charges of corrupt practices in the last one year? Almost every corrupt official caught red-handed will claim he or she followed due process, so what is due process? Even with the passage of FOI into law at the federal level, many still get frustrated when trying to invoke it and I can cite examples so it isn't uhuru yet!

We are not doing ourselves any favor by basking in a false euphoria pretending that we are winning the war against corruption with our half-hearted anti-corruption policy of hits and misses. We need to stop celebrating mediocrity, corruption is the bane of Nigeria's development.
PoliticsRe: 2013 World Corruption Index: Nigeria Ranks 144 Among 177countries by takedat(m):
The bum-hole licking griots and praise singers above are celebrating that we are not sharing positions with war ravaging countries like Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq and others. Our West African brother, Ghana is ranked 63rd in the world while Nigeria with all the tens of billions of Naira pumped into our anti-corruption agencies yearly and promulgation of anti-corruption laws, we are ranked 144th. The tragedy is that corruption is getting worse and no area of public sector is spared and it is indicated in this report.

In 2012: we scored 27 points out of a possible 100 points, and we ranked 139 out of 176 countries.

In 2013: we scored 25 points out of a possible 100 points, and we are ranked 144 out of 177 countries.

2012- http://premiumtimesng.com/news/109853-nigeria-is-35th-most-corrupt-in-the-world-says-transparency-international-2012-report.html

2013- http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/12/03/at-144th-in-the-world-nigeria-sinks-deeper-in-corruption-index/

This is regression and not improvement(from 139 to 144), This is failure and there is absolutely nothing to rejoice over! It means Nigerians have the perception that the corruption bazaar has increased, Nigerians believe that we have loosened the rope on embezzlers. Are we a people of little or no expectations that we now find solace in the fact that we are not ranked together with war-torn countries or in the last 10 OR is it just one of the nasty display of sycophancy from a bunch of worthless, brainless toadies?

"The PDP therefore asked Nigerians to reject the APC as their real motive which is to pretend its way to power and unleash hardship on the people is being daily exposed."

Is there any difference between Satan and the Devil? Is APC not PDP's identical twin? According to Metuh, Nigerians should resist the APC and continue to endure the immense hardship they have suffered in the past 14 years of PDP's dysfunctional democracy. Well, I do not blame him, after all, Nigerians are mindless zombies who feed on primordial sentiments and will never set aside their differences, do way with their common enemy, that is, our unproductive political class(APC, PDP...) who share the same manifesto of mis-governance, and forge a new way forward instead of having to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Oshiomhole was unlucky to be used as a scapegoat because he couldn't control his mouth. "Actions speaks louder than words" they say, and the actions of all our leaders from the national to the local levels speaks and manifest crass disdain for the poor and downtrodden, so its not just an Oshiomhole or APC affair. Metuh should be reminded that Oshiomhole is not the worst of them all, in fact, the criminal excesses of 2 former PDP Governors of the state bequeathed a legacy of shame, poverty and institutional decay on the state.

PDP is too morally challenged to accuse another party of moral bankruptcy. PDP granted executive fiat to corruption(and it became a bazaar for all), PDP encouraged the grab-grab syndrome and perfected the systemic regime of deprivation. Instead of the shadow boxing, blusters and vitriols, the PDP controls all the instrument of State, why can't the party do Nigerians the favor by petitioning the relevant agencies to investigate and prosecute these corrupt elements in the opposition? But, no they won't do that because Nigeria is unlucky to be blessed with thieves as leaders who prefer to accuse each other on the pages of newspaper instead of "doing the needful".

We want GEJ to be a 'strong president', strong enough to deal with our corrupt politicians, strong enough to deal with crude oil thieves, strong enough to deal with the cabal of fraudulent business men and women who commit economic crimes, and strong enough to guide the country to the promised land. Not a President or Government that hounds ordinary citizens for expressing their displeasure towards Government.

After all, our various positions on this forum, including yours, are motivated by one thing or the other. You are free to disagree with him without name calling and tagging him sycophant. If 4 people are employed by government to do the job of 1 person, for the only reason of creating jobs, the excess 3 are a burden on the society and not a solution. Most of these aides are mere political jobbers, and they add no value to governance. Creating useless offices to compensate loyalists will 'NOT' alleviate poverty.

If we continue spending a huge chunk of our budget(60-75% of our budget) on servicing civil servants and our unproductive political class, it means all citizens who are not part of the civil service or political class are not the focus of governance. We need a lean government to free up more money for the benefit of the masses. That is why we need a smart and effective government(both in the national and state levels)!

My brother its disheartening. This bullshit is not limited to the presidency alone, Same applies to the Governors, lawmakers, council chairmen, ministers and so on. Most of their aides are mere parasites whose only business in Government is to suck the nation's wealth dry, they are the least productive class in the country, they do not add any value to governance and they do enjoy juicy perks and huge salaries. I shudder to think of the state of the nation in years to come if we continue in this limp fashion. A Statement like "no alternative to President Jonathan in 2015" is a path we have trodden before and it reminds one of past political jobbers and wandering minstrels like Daniel Kanu and co. GEJ is qualified to be President but It is an insult, that in a country gifted with lots of bright minds we are often told that Nigeria have no alternative to Jonathan or Buhari or anyone else. Its silly to plaster a veneer of 'INDISPENSABILITY' on anyone.

The use of derogatory words on the office and the person of Mr president has formerly been instituted by them. remember what goes around comes back around. We are watching and waiting.
Idi0t, A case of libel/defamation is a civil matter for the courts. As the defamed person he may get money damages as compensation from the person that defamed him. Its a civil suit, so it is not subject to arrest or imprisonment. It is left for the president or anyone to prove in court that a statement is false and also prove that the statement caused him harm. Regardless of the 'contents of the criticism', it is not a criminal offence to criticize the president. I personally do not subscribe to the insults usually directed at the office of the president, but I am yet to see where it is stated in the constitution that it is a criminal offence to insult the president in an article/publication. The only plausible legal basis for his arrest is if he threatened the life of the president in his article or publication or if its a libelous article( the president through his lawyers can institute a libel action and let the court decide, a case of defamation is a civil matter and does not warrant an arrest), but mere insulting or criticizing the president isn't a genuine excuse.

To the students who are in support of the sack threat, if your lecturers call the bluff of government and some of them get sacked, it is then that you would know that your journey of sitting at home as just begun because you need to see all the bureaucratic bottlenecks that accompany recruitment process in Nigeria. You may not have a lecturer to take a course throughout a session if government goes ahead to sack some of the striking lecturers. Continuous dialogue is the only solution.
EducationRe: ASUU Dismisses Fg’s Threat To Sack Lecturers by takedat(m): 3:14pm On Nov 29, 2013
Anyone with half a brain knows that the sack threat from government is an idle one and a display of empty bravado. Even if half of the lecturers decides to call the bluff of government, and they get sacked, it will take us years to get new and competent ones and presently the universities are short of teaching staff so it will be foolhardy to sack out of the few available. Or will government call on lecturers turned politicians like Prof Jerry Gana and co to return to the classrooms or is there a jankara market where we can easily get unemployed professors? The only way out is continuous dialogue and not a show of power. Our university system is already in crisis, so why should we then plunge it into deeper crises? Even the military failed with this approach(sack threat), how much less a civilian government?

The top and first class thieves, thugs and barbarians think they can insult the office of the president and get away with it..

I ask, where were these genetic goats during the time of President Obasanjo?
Who among these goats is bold enough to criticize insult him back then?

GEJ is such an humble man with a commendable tolerance.
Do you have a proof to show that he 'insulted' the President? Why are folks like you interested in promoting this growing culture of intolerance, a culture where debates and dissents are frowned upon, a culture of concordance, a culture where second opinions are discouraged? We are no longer in a military era, and you should know that our democracy is evolving, more Nigerians are becoming aware of their right to express their views. Because OBJ who happened to be a militrician in agbada got away with illegalities does not mean GEJ should do the same, after all, he rode to power under the euphoria of transformation/fresh air.

Yes, it is morally binding on us all to respect the office of the president but I have not seen anywhere in the constitution where it is stated that, it is a criminal offense to insult the honor and prestige of the president. So on what legal basis was the man arrested supposing he insulted the president?

Jonathan voluntarily decided for vie for the presidency, no one forced him except for sycophants. Besides he is well renumerated/compensated for doing or not doing his job. The real people who gets insulted daily are the average Nigerians whose wealth/resources the killers of dreams and marauders of aspirations in government plunder and pillage on a daily basis, yet we(average Nigerians) have no SSS, EFCC or NPF to arrest them.
