Technology giant Facebook has announced plans to integrate WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. The merger is intended to create "the best messaging experiences" for the billions of users around the world who use the Facebook-owned apps. The apps will remain distinct from each other, although the underlying messaging infrastucture would be unified, according to people familiar with the matter. A spokesperson for Facebook said the merger would deliver a messaging platform that was fast, simple, reliable and private, though data experts have warned it could have an impact on people's privacy. "We’re working on making more of our messaging products end-to-end encrypted and considering ways to make it easier to reach friends and family across networks," The spokesperson said. No official details have been released, but the merger is expected to take place by early next year, The New York Times reported. The messaging app merger is a backtrack on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's original stance that both Instagram and WhatsApp would operate autonomously from the social network. Facebook acquired photo-sharing platform Instagram for approximately $1bn (£761m) in 2012, before taking over the messaging app WhatsApp in 2014 for an estimated $19.3bn. Both apps have since experienced rapid growth – Instagram has around 1 billion monthly active users and WhatsApp has 1.5 billion users – though all original founders of the apps have since left Facebook. WhatsApp employees were reportedly upset by plans to merge the app's messaging services with the other apps, making their views known during a contentious staff meeting in December. One of the main points of contention with integrating the apps could be related to data privacy. Currently WhatsApp users are not required to provide their name or any other identifying information beyond their phone number to use the messaging app. Merging with Facebook Messenger and Instagram could force WhatsApp users to reveal information about themselves that they would prefer to keep private. Data privacy expert Tim Mackey, who works at the software firm Synopsys, told The Independent that Facebook should take considerable care in how the integration ws handled given the firm's "spotty history" with user privacy. "Merging personal information and privacy configurations from three significant applications won’t be trivial," he said. "Facebook development teams would do well to look at this precedent and prioritise user privacy. "With the integration project currently expected to take a year to complete, and with end-to-end encryption as part of the plan, we should expect the Facebook engineering teams to focus attention on uniform data security both in their platform and in the apps themselves.” Facebook said in a statement: "As you would expect, there is a lot of discussion and debate as we begin the long process of figuring out all the details of how this [merger] will work." https://www.smokedscreen.com/2019/01/facebook-announces-merger-of-whatsapp-instagram-and-messenger/ Mynd44 lalasticlala

Owning a supercar has its perks and cons, many avoid supercars due to the fact that the cost of little repairs could purchase another vehicle. Friend of Jalopnik Bozi Tatarevic found U.S. Environmental Protection Agency documents for Road and Track recently that ran down the costs of replacement parts and labor on the Veyron, and, like the Veyron itself, they’re astronomically expensive. Parts listed on the EPA documents range from $9 camshaft position sensors to a $20,000 fuel tank, but labor is where things get ugly. Only one of the replacements on the EPA documents is less than four digits in terms of labor, with labor to replace the powertrain control module running $680. Then there’s the labor to replace the $20,000 fuel tank, which is the price of an actual car at a cool $23,000. Here’s more, from Road and Track: THE INTAKE MANIFOLD IS SOLD IN THREE PIECES, WITH THE UPPER PORTIONS FOR EACH BANK COMING IN AT $4,000 A PIECE, WHILE THE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD COSTS $2,000. LABOR TO REPLACE IT IS LISTED AS BEING $1,800. IN COMPARISON, AN INTAKE MANIFOLD FOR THE LAMBORGHINI HURACAN COMES IN AT JUST OVER $1,200, AND ONE FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE MORE COMMON LIKE A CORVETTE IS ABOUT $220.https://www.smokedscreen.com/2018/12/7-2-million-naira-to-change-a-bugatti-veyron-fuel-tank/

White South Africans could be forced to give up their own homes from next year as the nation's government steamrolls through plans for land expropriation over claims 'Africa's original sin' must be reversed. The White South Africans could be facing one of the greatest challenges this year Land is a huge issue in South Africa where racial inequality remains entrenched more than two decades after the end of apartheid when millions of the black majority were dispossessed of their land by a white minority. The National Assembly agreed to the establishment of a committee that will draft an amendment to section 25 of the Constitution – a law which will allow the government to take homes from the people – and refuse to pay them compensation. Last week the nations politicians fast tracked the set up of a committee which will write the legal change and present it next year. The motion was adopted with 183 MPs voting yes, 77 voting no and no abstentions in fiery scenes as South Africans battle over land reform. In the same week, South Africa 's High Court rejected a legal challenge brought by a group representing white farmers against President Cyril Ramaphosa's plans for land expropriation without compensation. Last month, Ekurhuleni's city council voted in favour of forging ahead with 'expropriation without compensation' - a legal tool that the ruling African National Congress says is necessary to provide land for disadvantaged black citizens. Ramaphosa handed over the title deeds of 4,586 hectares of land to Chief Inkosi Mandla Mkwanazi of the KwaMkwanazi community in Empangeni, near Durban. The KwaMkwanazi community was forcibly removed from their land more than 100 years ago following the enactment of the 1913 Land Act. Like other South African cities, Ekurhuleni faces a dire housing crunch, with some 600,000 of its nearly 4 million people living in 'informal settlements' and a shortage of land to build homes. https://www.smokedscreen.com/2018/12/tensions-rise-as-south-africa-sets-to-seize-lands-from-white-south-african-farmers/ Lalasticlala mynd44

Emails written by Facebook’s chief and his deputies show the firm struck secret deals to give some developers special access to user data while refusing others, according to MPs. A cache of internal documents has been published online by a parliamentary committee. It said the files also showed Facebook had deliberately made it “as hard as possible” for users to be aware of privacy changes to its Android app. Facebook had objected to their release. It said that the documents had been presented in a “very misleading manner” and required additional context. The emails were obtained from the chief of Six4Three – a software firm that is suing the tech giant – and were disclosed by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee as part of its inquiry into fake news. About 250 pages have been published, some of which are marked “highly confidential”. Damian Collins MP, the chair of the committee, highlighted several “key issues” in an introductory note. He wrote that: Facebook allowed some companies to maintain “full access” to users’ friends data even after announcing changes to its platform in 2014/2015 to limit what developers’ could see. “It is not clear that there was any user consent for this, nor how Facebook decided which companies should be whitelisted,” Mr Collins wrote Facebook had been aware that an update to its Android app that let it collect records of users’ calls and texts would be controversial. “To mitigate any bad PR, Facebook planned to make it as hard as possible for users to know that this was one of the underlying features,” Mr Collins wrote Facebook used data provided by the Israeli analytics firm Onavo to determine which other mobile apps were being downloaded and used by the public. It then used this knowledge to decide which apps to acquire or otherwise treat as a threat there was evidence that Facebook’s refusal to share data with some apps caused them to fail there had been much discussion of the financial value of providing access to friends’ data Facebook said Six4Three had “cherry-picked” the documents and claimed they had omitted “important context”. Facebook documents seized by MPs Facebook reveals its data-sharing VIPs All our stories about the Cambridge Analytica data scandal “We stand by the platform changes we made in 2015 to stop a person from sharing their friends’ data with developers,” said a spokeswoman. “Like any business, we had many internal conversations about the various ways we could build a sustainable business model for our platform. “But the facts are clear: we’ve never sold people’s data.” Mr Zuckerberg has also posted a personal response on his Facebook page . “I understand there is a lot of scrutiny on how we run our systems. That’s healthy given the vast number of people who use our services around the world, and it is right that we are constantly asked to explain what we do,” he said. “But it’s also important that the coverage of what we do – including the explanation of these internal documents – doesn’t misrepresent our actions or motives.” Lalasticlala mynd44 https://www.smokedscreen.com/2018/12/newly-released-e-mails-shows-that-facebook-struck-deals-over-users-data/

Three teenage burglars have been jailed after they were caught undressed and pretending to be asleep when officers caught up with them. Bredforshire police received reports that four teens were acting suspicious on June 15th. When officers gained access to the house they found Mark Boyce, Patrick Casey, Seth Lee and a 16-year-old boy pretending to be asleep alongside a large amount of stolen jewellery. Although they were found sharing two beds, they denied knowing each other or having any involvement in the burglary. Lee, 19, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison at Luton Crown Court. Casey, 19, was handed a two-year jail term, while Boyce, also 19, was sentenced to one year and 10 months. https://www.smokedscreen.com/2018/12/teenage-burglars-caught-pretending-to-be-asleep/
