“Oga/Madam, what happened? Tell us your own side.”

It sounds harmless.
It sounds friendly.

It is statement-taking and your answer can either free you or put you inside trouble that was not originally your own.

This Question is dangerous because the moment you start talking freely:
“I only slapped him once…”
“I pushed her but she fell…”
“I collected the money but I was going to pay…”
“Yes we fought, but it was small fight…”
You’ve just admitted to assault, battery, threat, fraud, or malicious damage without knowing.

In law, your mouth can become evidence and once it is written as your statement, you cannot come tomorrow and say
“I was joking”
“I didn’t mean it that way”
“I was confused.”
Police will tell you: “But you said it yourself.”

Police officers are trained to listen quietly.
They let you talk.
They let you “explain.”
They let you release unnecessary information.
Then they put it in writing.
Next thing you hear is:
“Sign here.”

And once you sign, your own words can land you in:
