The noilers at my backyard is now 13 ,lost 2 out of 15 so far.
They are 14 weeks old,and they've grown so big.
They now feed on kitchen leftovers, insects and....
I have no plans of culling them soon, want to keep them till December to see if they can reproduce before then.
I'm thinking of doing another batch of 50 of it,they are less stressful and cheaper to rear.

MasExcel19:
How to beat recession with poultry farming secrets: starting up your farm with less than 100k- Part 3

Hey Guys! I am so happy seeing most of you following this series and actually doing something already. It is my hope and prayer that you not only start but succeed exceedingly!

In the coming days we will be doing things that will blow your mind and make you MONEY farming. I encourage you to take necessary steps if you have interest in poultry farming.

Today, i will be explaining to you the best breed to start with especially if you're a newbie and the point of entry that I think is best.

*If u are starting out for the first time and are ready to grow ur business, u can't wait too long to do this. Imagine waiting until 6 months before u can sell 50 chickens wen u can actually sell 3 times and triple ur profit within the same period and at a good price. So growing Cockerel is slow unless u are planning on buying doc and selling at 2 weeks it is not advisable.

* After Cockereal, layers are the strongest in terms of their ability to resist illness and withstand stress but growing these breed requires serious capital and d technical know how. You have to really know the business to be in it. Also, u don't get returns quickly since a bird will start laying from 12-16 weeks during the period of which u will be spending money on vaccines, drugs and quality nutrition. Your money is in the eggs these birds lay per day so imagine running a small scale, spending all these money only to park 50 - 100 eggs daily after 12 or 14weeks.

* The best point of entry for all 3 breed type is doc ie day old chick. Here are the reasons
1. It is the most cost effective
2. You get to understand these creatures better. The more u understand them d better u knw how to grow them and the more your chances of profiting.

* Buying doc is the most risky but the best! I mean u are sure that the chicks have good nutrition from day 1 and will receive all the necessary vaccines, drugs and vitamins. All of which would account for the results you will get in terms of weight and egg. You are not sure of all these if you buy at 2 weeks old unless u know the farm.

* the cheapest point of entry for layer farmers is at the point of lay. At this point the layer is assumed to have received all the Vitamins, drugs, nutrition necessary for its future performance (laying eggs). There have been lots of report of under performance of layers bought at point of lay (pullets) stage. So unless you have heard a good report about a farm do not buy their pullets. You will waste money.

See, there are a lot of factors that contribute to the performance of chickens and for layers these 3 come top on the list:
1. Complete diet/highly nutritious feed
2. Vaccines
3. skill of nurturing

Layers need to get all 3 above to be able to develop the necessary enzymes which would help them produce the eggs you seek. Remember, your money comes first from selling eggs. Small sized eggs are priced low and delayed or under laying leads to waste of money.

* Another unique thing with layers is that it requires much more capital to start with even if you enter at point of lay. You will spend more in housing, feeds etc. It is also more profitable if done on a large scale of 500 pullets at the least. I mean you don't want to go through all the stress only to collect 50 eggs daily.
* Also, unlike broilers which can comfortably be breed at the backyard of your house, layers would need a good location far from residence. It is easier for your neighbours to accommodate the smell of chicken droppings than to accommodate a mixture of chicken droppings and rotten eggs... That shit can kill... Lols

* So if you have the required skills, a good location and the capital you can go ahead with layers. If not start small and grow BIG farming broilers.

*From all I have said, you should understand that the best breed to start with especially if you are inexperienced and need returns quickly is BROILERS.

They are the most fragile with the highest chance of mortality but there is a way on how you can successfully brood them with less or no death rate.

****Have any questions? Drop them

Master Excel
Good job bro...

yea, that was what they said, and it is obvious keeping the turkeys few in the box increase their survival rate.
Yes.especialy foreign turkeys, they are very fragile and keeping them in the chicken carton for the long distance trip,in my case (Ibadan-Abuja) does not help.I prefer them local/foreign in a separate box and I pay the driver for the box.

I don't realy know how to thank u for this priceless information. Tasho ,u are really a great being.
it is a pity u lost ur turkeys,nt easy but our good wishes are with u.
I almost got ripped off during my last order, though poultry plaza did me bad by not packing my 6 turkeys inside boom black carton. they told me d new standard is now two birds per carton or chamber, ie four per carton.
I think Poultry plaza is a company and they have a name to protect so they may not be involved in the crooked biz that individual agents do.
Thanks for your concern though.

Sad to hear that. Turkey requires more attention than even broilers.
Feed, medication, etc must be adhered to strictly.
Not only turkeys...all the birds in this batch. The turkey was the last...so painful.
Thx anyways

Lost the last 8 wks old turkey of my 2nd batch today.
I lost the cost of buying the birds and the cost of feeding them for over 8 weeks - very painful

I am on the 3Rd batch of birds in my backyard.

The first batch arrived 23/05/17 - 50 FIDAN broilers and 5 foreign turkeys ordered from poultry plaza.Culled 41 broilers at 9+wks and put in the freezer to sell to neighbors and friends, lost the 5 foreign turkeys.

The second batch arrived 16/06/17 - 50 Zartech Cobb 700 and 12 local turkey ordered from a nairalander. This batch was supposed to be better than the first but I started losing them right from the day I got them. Before 2 wks I had lost more than half of the turkeys and like 20 broilers-hard luck you would say.

This thread is for the third batch which I received on 21/07/17. i wanted to order for 100 broilers and 20 foreign turkeys when I started the thread but I later changed my mind when I got to know the wayo most of these agents play when you order for birds.

A short story--- I reside in Abuja but I am originally from Ibadan.i spent the best part of my life in Ibadan at Oluyole Estate where most hatcheries are.
So when I was about to order the third batch,my brother in Ibadan let me know that he could get them for me from the open market by Obasanjo farms in Oluyole and give to the drivers that normally hang around teachers' house. He gave me the prices and I realised that it's a lot cheaper. He even told me about how the agents used to change cartons and birds.
I eventually saved lots of money and got healthy and quality birds at the end of the day.
I had no plans of buying plain carton but when I discovered a childhood friend with a quality breeder,he sells day old chicks too...so I picked from him a carton of broilers + 10 extra birds at N80 per bird,4 foreign turkeys at N1400 and 6 local turkeys at N350.
I also bought a carton of Sayed at N130,at a time the agents were selling at N160/170.I bought a carton of male line at 150,agents were selling N190/200 then. You can imagine how much I saved.

Dear Nairalanders, pls be informed that you can book your birds directly from all hatcheries on phone if you have their contacts. You can get the contacts from their websites.i am sure of Nastech,Zartech,Foresight,NPG...Also Amo but their minimum order is 500 birds.
Let us try as much as possible to avoid these agents that sell substandard and unhealthy birds,or change birds from branded to plain cartons. It's always painful when you invest your hard earned money and achieve nothing at the end.
