I can't believe you're sitting there comparing a skyscraper to a nuclear plant filled with radiation elements, capable of annihilating thousands, if not millions of people.

This is a perfect response from someone who has been shown that his logic does not stand up to scrutiny.  The issue is not the gravity but the principle underlying the decision.  You do not condemn someone who steals $5 million and yet praise the one who stole only $5 because the the gravity of the offense is greater in the case of the former. The principle should be 'no stealing', irrespective of the value of what is stolen.

The answer is simple.  The skyscrapers were designed to handle the event while the smaller houses were not designed for such. 

You have no idea what you're talking about. Japan traverses the most tsunami prone region on earth. The very word, tsunami is a Japanese word. The country sits on a seismically volatile Ring of Fire spawning thousands of earthquakes per year. Earthquakes over 7.5 on the Richter scale in the region are virtually guaranteed to lead to tsunamis, and you would have us believe that your ''infallible'' Japanese gods never considered tsunamis issuing from earthquakes?

You simply have no idea what led to the disaster do you?  Did you ask yourself why the meltdown did not occur immediately following the earthquake and tsunami? What was the assumption for the design of these plants?  What is supposed to hold up now that failed?  Why did they fail? You will be surprised that what caused this meltdown in itself is not the failure of the Plants themselves, but failure of other infrastructures that are tied to the Plant.  Anyway, this is not the place to start teaching Vulnerability Analysis.  You cannot teach someone who has already taken a position irrespective of facts.

And by the way, my analogy with air travel is perfectly on point. Following your flawed reasoning, one will say why fly when there are cars? Why risk the death that is almost certain with an air crash as against a higher probability of staying alive in the event of a car accident?

Did you also call for the end to coal mining after those guys were trapped in the mine for days in Chile? Why not call for an end to coal plants as well? What about drilling? Why not call for an end to off shore drilling with the hindsight of the BP oil disaster?!

Our civilization was built on risks, it is sustained through risks and can only move forward through risks. Get that into your mind!

Your thinking is very flawed in terms of risk tolerance. Did you ever ask yourself why they are building skyscrapers in such a seismic active area? Isn't having skyscrapers exposing more people to dying in a single event? What you fail to understand is that every risk can be designed for. Do you wonder why smaller houses are seen floating all over the place while the skyscrapers are still standing?

The problem with Japan is not that they built nuclear plants, but rather a failure of imagination. The designers envisaged an earthquake and designed for it. This is why the Plants are still standing. What they failed to plan for was a combination of an earthquake with a tsunami. Backup power to the cooling systems were not strengthened enough to stay up under this kind of catastrophe.

As engineers, we not only design for our infrastructure to stay up, we design for a controlled failure in the case of an event. Someone failed to anticipate and plan for this kind of event. That was the problem, and not the simplistic dismissal of people who have shown themselves to be more resourceful and innovative than any civilization you can compare to!

It shows that you were right about what? Even if there is a catastrophe that leads to the annihilation of Japan, you will still have no point! So why haven't you called for an end to air travel simply because there has been many fatalities from air crashes? The way people think just baffles me. Like I said earlier, it takes a liberal to think that success in life can be attained without a measure of risk.

Japan really dug the depths of stuppidity and mindless greed by deciding to build  scores of NUCLEAR PLANTS along the coast of its earthquake prone RING OF FIRE.

Now WE have to worry about the fallout from their radiation?

All because they could not be bothered to 'suffer' 'less efficient' means of power that require greater investment.

All for corporate greed and avarice.

All for their desperation to be a ''leading industrial power''.

Everything else, including their own survival, was relegated in importance.

Theirs is a lesson in the tragic effects of mindless, drone-like industrialism.

The new world needs to be guided by a totally different ethos which does not place profit and convenience over life, common sense and human survival on this planet.

This is the only logical path to follow when you run out of other people's money to spend. BREAKING NEWS - LEFTIST ACTIVISTS CALL FOR BOYCOTT OF TARGET STORES.

In what has become another twist to the Tuscon tragedy, a group of DNC Activists who call themselves Liberals for the Restoration of Toning Down the Rhetoric (LRTDR), have now called for a National Boycott of the popular chain store "TARGET".  Speaking through their secretary of media affairs, Mr Baby~Fart, LRTDR said it is unconscionable that any civilized people, group or entity be allowed to use that word in a free society.  According to Mr Baby~Fart, the word "Target" reminds people of the tragedy in Tuscon and could inspire people who may or may not have been inside a Target Store to commit unprecedented attrocities.

Furthermore, the Group insisted that TARGET must be held responsible for any act of cruelty on animals, especially dogs.  According to Mr Baby~Fart, Target Stores' mascot is a dog with a bullseye clearly drawn on the the left eye.   This is no doubt a ploy and a secretly coded message to trigger-happy Tea Partiers to turn these beloved animals into moving targets.  Asked if there is any proof or evidence to support these assertions, Mr Baby~Fart retorted that proofs are only a means of filibuster by the right-wing conspirators.  "Who needs proof in the face of such a serious charge?  What matters is not proof but the seriousness of the accusation!"

In these days of political correctness and hyper-sensitivity, one has to resist every attempt to criminalise dissent and opposition. If we leave it to certain elements on the Left, the use of euphemism and figure of speech will be a thing of the past. Like I said earlier, I see nothing wrong in the way Obama, Palin or any of the other Politicians have used certain words and phrases. One only needs to understand the use of those words and phrases in context.

Unfortunately for our society, some people are trained to only look for certain words and phrases without understanding how they are used. They are trained to take those words and extrapolate them while whipping their intended audiences up in a frenzy. This is why certain individuals will come on nairaland to repeat talking points from their favorite Leftist websites in order to demonise their perceived enemies. They lay common sense aside and assume a partisan position. Our community is the worse for it because of the continued distrust that we now have in each other. We don't seek to understand what a person says, but only how to exploit what they have said to achieve a predertermined end.

I learnt long ago that we think in images. Words well spoken are words that paint good images. When Palin used the word "target" and followed it up with an image, did she by any stretch of the imagination making a shooting hit list? The answer is "No". If that is so, why then are we still having this conversation? The answer is simple - politics. Our partisan brothers on the Left cannot even wait for us to mourn the loss of some of us before they begin their political game. What a shame!!!

Weren't there election just in November which were peaceful with no reports of violence or disruption. If this supposed "violent talk" was supposed to be causing sane people to go insane or pushing slightly unstable people to mass murder. Why was it that during the November mid-terms elections, d height of political sloganeering and rhetorical back & forth, a target rich environment for unstable psycho's to wreck havoc. Why were there were no incidences at all?

All these depressed Leftists are back!  Having received their marching orders from base, they cannot retreat even in the face of logic.  Political opportunism has become the order of the day on the Left. 

After a highly placed Democrat called for an Oklahoma City bombing (with the consent of Chris Matthews if I may add), we have had such incident as the Major Nidal Hassan rampage in Fort Hood as well as the failed Times Square bombing.  If the Right were as desperate and devoid of intellectual honesty as the Left, we would have tied the Democat rhetoric to the incident.  I am glad that such base political opportunism is the sole preserve of the Left.  Thank God Americans have seen right through them.  The process of consigning all of them to the dustbin of history has already begun.

Here we go again.  Even after being lectured to learn to read any phrase within the context it was used, we are back again demonising opponents for political gain.  A leopard they say, can never change its spots. 

I see no point in accusing Obama or any Democrat for that matter of encouraging violence even though there is enough ammunition (I hope I won't be called a terrorist for using this word) to pick from their words if I choose to be intellectually dishonest like some are. Neither Democrats nor Republicans remotely encourage or approve the dastardly action of that lunatic.  I don't know the politics of the guy and frankly I don't care.  Historically, Republicans and Democrats alike have been victims of such heinous crime - Reagan and JFK easily come to mind.

Bottomline, Republicans don't encourage violence.  Likewise, Democrats do not call for killing people (except for babies in the womb of course  ).  Let that 'baby~fat' go bunkers here for all I care!!!!

This is why it is good for someone to be able to analyse and properly understand what is going on.  At no point did I say or infer that both Parties advocate violence as a means of political discuss.  You came to that conclusion all by yourself.  Despite all the phrases used by Obama and the DNC, nothing from their statement suggest they were promoting violence. 

Since you said you don't understand english, let me do some public service by helping you a little here.  To understand what someone says, you will need to understand the context of their statement.  This is why I do not fault Obama, Palin, Bachman or the DNC for the phrases people are highlighting.  The reason is simple.  When those words, phrases or sentences are placed in proper context, one sees that they are by no means advocating an armed conflict.  People like you, and the Left in this country are losing credibility fast because every reasonable person can see through this politically motivated rhetorics, and frankly it is disgusting.
