Wow! It's good to be back to this thread. This thread was a good resource for me in getting my Visa exactly 1 year ago (i posted my interview Q and A then)

For the guy asking if studying here is easy; . . . . omo, it's not o! You must be prepared to work your socks off, especially when the homeworks/projects/midterms come thick and fast.

To put it in proper perspective; taking 3 courses in Grad School per semester here in the US is more stressful than when i was taking 6-8 courses per semester during my undergrad in Naija.

Congrats to all those that have gotten your Visa and wishing the one's getting ready for their interviews God's favour.

Hopefully i can help in answering some questions in the coming weeks, before another crazy Fall 2010 semester starts

Abi o!. I love their analysis . . . 4 minutes added time + 56 Seconds Bellamy Celebration + 30 Seconds Carrick Substitution = 95 Minutes 26 Seconds . . . Owen Scored 95 Minutes 27 Seconds. So its just a One Second difference.

Here are questions i can remember:

1) Have you been to the US?

2) Do you have any relations in the US. . . . . . so long your immediate family (parents/siblings) are not there, just say NO. They might want to dig up stuffs on them, i guess.

3) How did u get information of the schools you applied to? . . . . . .gradschools.com, US news.com, Petersons Graduate school guide . . u fit mention Princeton Grad school guide sef

4) Who's sponsoring your studies and what's the occupation . . . . , made sure i explained my sponsor's occupation/position in glowing terms

5) Which other schools did u apply to? . . . . .mentioned the 4 schools.

6) How many admitted you? . . . . mentioned 3

7) Where are the admission lettters form other schools?? . . . . now this question took me off-balance, in fact i was scared when she looked at me that i didnt have the other admisssion lettters. . . . but i composed myself and gave this answer . . . . . 'since i'm only presenting the i-20 of xyz school, i only brought admission related documents of this school' . . . . i think she was satisfied sha . . . , but if you have admission letters from other schools, berra take it . . it won't harm

Why did u choose this particular school . . . . . . . . . . . . .Their research areas align with areas i want to explore and become more proficient in and the Profs were more open in their email responses (this means you were interracting with them . . . i actually had 2 names i was ready to mention in case she asked for the Profs names)

9) What are those areas? . . . . . . . . . mentioned my 3 core areas of interest

10) Why those 3 areas? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .those areas are linked to my current job functions which i want to improve on

11) So where do u work? . . . . . . . . . .mentioned the company name and wat we do; related to my research areas that i mentioned earlier . . . . also mentioned that i've been there for over 3 years.


After that . . . . the lady just started typing some stuffs for another 20/30 seconds and looking at my DS forms . . at this stage i was in a limbo, cos she hasnt even asked me to produce any document from my 'full envelope' . . . . , i was expecting her to say 'let me see your financial documents/ test scores e.t.c. after finishing her typings . . , she just gave me the VFS address slip . . . . . .chikena!

O Se Baba!!! . . . . . This is simply God's favour in action!!!

Hello People . . . .I also got my Students Visa today (Lagos Consulate)

This was God in action cos i was not requested by the interviewer to present any other document apart from the DS 156,157.158 forms

I'll try and post all the questions i can rememember soonest.

To answer the 1st part of your question; after receiving your i-20, the next 2 major steps are:

1) Book for a Student Visa appoinment
2) Make your SEVIS fee /Visa Application Fee and VFS Fee payments.

Anyway, do you know where i can get the GreBible software, i think it would be nice to have it. i downloaded a demo and its very useful, easy to master words and its fun using it as well. I will love to have the full version.

I used majorly GREBible for my GRE in Nov. 2008 and like u said the flash animations makes it fun mastering words.

A quick question; since i got my appointment date via email and didnt apply online via the VFS website, do i still need to pay the VFS fee or should i just pay the visa interview fee alone?

Hi Phizz,

Please download the attched file and use it to upgrade your strong 4653x decoder.

When upgrading please select the str4653x.stb software first,then go back and select the SRT4651X_4654_MYTV_184P_20090323.ST to do a second upgrade.

Then it will start showing

Bros, where is the attached file in this your earlier post? I'm still having problems of viewing only 3/4 channels on my 4653x decoder too.

I've upgraded my 4653x decoder (using the stb file on their site on my flash drive) and the 'No Access' problem still persists.

The only solution adviced here is to go to Ebute Metta Office , am just wondering what they are going to do differently that i have not done yet.

I don't wanna waste money going to Ebute-Metta and not achieving anything.

i was able to download the 4653x.stb file, ran the upgrade and it was successful.

But, am still getting "No Access" on most of the channels. I deleted and rescanned on frequency 11.900 and 12.130, but still d same problem. I also noticed that d rescanning was giving 62 channels (repeating the 31 channels twice! )

I called hitv customer care this morning and the guy said they are 'working on it'

Is this a general problem for Strong 4653x decoders ? or is there any additional thing i need to do?

I downloaded the "HITV_MC720EU_S2.0.7_B200_080901.rs232" file (for SRT 4653x) from the hitv website on my flash drive and i tried following the instructions . . .

When i click on "Data Transfer' in the "USB" menu, i get a "File List' menu which is EMPTY.


What's the way out?

With all these financial meltdown/recession, do you guys think it will affect international student admission?

Let me see if i can reply to some of the earlier questions, i have actually been offline for over a week preparing for GRE/TOEFL.

1) With respect to the CGPA conversion thing, i actually mailed some schools to see if they can convert it for me before i apply but they said i would need to apply first before they can convert it. i have searched and searched the internet for over 4 months to get a standard CGPA conversion but all av been getting are conflicting views. But since i asked this question some months ago and sayhi2ay said my 3.27/5.0 might be 3.0/4.0 , i applied to 5 schools, 2 had 2.75 as minimum CGPA while 2 had 3.0 as minimum CGPA while the 5th scholl didn't have minimum CGPA for international students.

2) GRE/TOEFL Test Center : I actually registered for my TOEFL and GRE at FirstLogic too like sayhi2ay mentioned. GRE cost 30k and TOEFL was 26k. I actually wrote my GRE this week (1310/1600) & wrote my TOEFL last week (FirstLogic already had filled up spaces for the Nov.14th exam so they registered me but i wrote the test at a TOEFL center at GRA,Ikeja.

3) GRE/TOEFL expiration: Based on the browsing av done in the past months, i think GRE expires after 5 years while TOEFL is for 2 years.

Well, looks like hitv is gradually stepping up with their subscription activation.

I paid yesterday morning in Lagos island and while i was just preparing to call their office in the afternoon to activate the subscription, my peeps at home just called to confirm that the subscription was already active.

I hope they keep up with this . , .

I actually called First Logic yesterday afternoon.

The lady on the phone said GRE is 30K while TOEFL is 26K

So from these prices, it's not the offical rate of $170 (GRE) and $150 (TOEFL).

your 3.03 on a scale of 5.00 should be between 2.7 and 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. So, look for schools that you'll meet the GPA requirements instead of wasting applications. If your GPA in your final year in college is about 3.5/5.0, you should have no problem at all.

I will like to humbly ask . . . .  . what do you think a GPA of 3.25/5 will be on a 4.0 scale? (So as not to waste time/money applying to schools that i do not meet their GPA requirements?
