The news channels got it all wrong last
night while running a story concerning the
spread of Ebola in Western Africa
including Guinea, Sierra Leone and
Liberia.
In the report, CNN claimed there are 1,603
cases, 887 deaths and 55% fatality rate -
however, while highlighting the countries
affected, they accidentally highlighted
Niger for Nigeria.

HealthEbola: Europe, Asia Border Staff Onhigh Alert by tdayof(op): 2:36pm On Jul 31, 2014
LONDON (AFP) – British border staff are not
ready to deal with possible Ebola cases
arriving in the country and there are no
containment facilities for suspected victims, a
union leader said Thursday.
Fears that the outbreak of the virus in west
Africa could spread to other continents have
grown in recent days, putting border staff
across Europe and Asia on high alert.
Lucy Moreton, general secretary of the union
that represents border forces in Britain, said
that her members are “very concerned” abut
the situation.
“They are phoning us up and asking ‘what are
we supposed to do, how do we spot this, how
do we protect ourselves?’, and we can’t
answer that for them just now,” Moreton said.
“There is no health facility at the border, there
is no containment facility and until extremely
recently there has been no guidance issued to
staff at all as to what they should do.”
The warning comes a day after the British
government’s crisis response committee met
on Wednesday to discuss its preparations to
cope with any possible outbreak in Britain.
Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has
described it as a “very serious threat”, amid
concerns that a person carrying the virus
could travel to Britain.
One possible case in Britain has tested
negative.
Almost 700 people have been killed in west
Africa by the virus since the first case was
detected in February.

HealthWorld's Deadliest ! 1 Out Of 15airport Contacts Down With Ebolavirus Disease by tdayof(op): 2:28pm On Jul 31, 2014
Lagos state government has allayed fears
that some of the airport official that came
in contact with Patrick Sawyer, may have
been manifesting symptoms of the virus.
Indication emerged, yesterday, that one of
the 15 airport contacts that assisted the
late Liberian, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, that
died of Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, may have
contracted the deadly virus.
Unconfirmed reports revealed that already
the contact has begun to manifest
symptoms of Ebola Virus.
According to a member of the Joint Federal
and State Team on Ebola outbreak who
preferred anonymity; one of the persons
who accompanied late Patrick Sawyer is
already showing signs of Ebola.
The reliable source confirmed receipt of a
short message service, SMS, text that the
person who assisted late Patrick Sawyer to
move out of the plane is presenting
symptoms, identifiable with EVD. “In fact, I
just got a text that the person who helped
Sawyer, the Liberian, to get out of the air
plane is down with a suspected case of
Ebola. You can see we have to be very
careful. I cannot say specifically whether
he or she is a Nigerian or in Nigeria right
now. He is still being monitored as we
speak,” he said.
He added that the latest victim was among
those who were being quarantined for
having first contact with the victim.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government in
a swift reaction through a text message
said that no one of the 59 contacts is sick
for now. The Special Adviser to the
Governor on Public Health, Dr. Yewande
Adeshina who responded through a text
message said: “It is not true. We are doing
routine surveillance, no one is sick.”

HealthMan From Nigeria Tested For Ebola In The UK by tdayof(op): 12:49pm On Jul 30, 2014
A man has been tested for ebola in the uk – increasing fears over the threat posed to Britain from the deadly disease.

He was tested at a hospital in Birmingham after arriving back in the uk from nigeria via Paris.

Fortunately the man was given the all-clear after tests, the Daily Mail reports, but the scare has sharpened focus on the possible spread of the virus to Britain.

Meanwhile, doctors fear ebola victim Patrick Sawyer may have sparked a worldwide spread of the killer disease after being allowed on two flights while infected.

And tonight a desperate race was on to find dozens of passengers who flew on the same jets as the 40-year-old American.

British doctors and border officials have been warned to be on the lookout for people in the uk showing signs of the disease.

Mr Sawyer was allowed to board an ASKY Airlines flight in Liberia, where ebola is rife, despite vomiting and suffering from diarrhoea. His sister was recently killed by the virus.

Protection: The disease is a global threat

He had a stopover in Ghana then changed planes in Togo and flew to the international travel hub of Lagos in nigeria. The dad-of-three died five days after arriving in the city.

Lancaster University virologist Derek Gatherer said passengers, crew and airport ground staff who came into contact with Mr Sawyer could be in “pretty serious danger”. ebola is fatal in 90% of cases.

Doctors have identified 59 people who were near him and have tested 20. But they are struggling to find the others, who could have flown to anywhere in the world from Lagos.

There were today questions over how Liberian government worker Mr Sawyer was let on flights while clearly showing symptoms of ebola – which has killed 672 people in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone since it broke out in February.

Experts from Public Health England have met uk Border Agency officials to make sure staff are aware of the signs to look for in ebola sufferers.

PHE has also used its national medical alert system to advise all uk doctors to “remain vigilant for unexplained illness in those who have visited the affected area”.

Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhoea, fever, weakness, headache and sore throat.

Those struck down can also suffer internal and external bleeding. The virus is spread through human contact. There is no cure.

PHE director of global health Dr Brian McCloskey described the ebola outbreak as the most “acute emergency” facing Britain.

The expert said he had briefed David Cameron.

He added: “When these things start to escalate we work with everybody to ensure they are aware of what needs to happen.”
