Anonymous6o6: Some people would call it an exaggeration but for me, alx is one of the best program I have encountered. Through this program I have connected with so many great people I would have never thought of connecting with. Lately, I have been so hooked with work and combining the programs that I didn't have much time for my colleagues (let's be real, people would follow you if you have the skills) I need to study harder not to disappoint myself because I feel everyone is growing so fast while I'm still behind.
Now, I bring you news!!! Alx news!!! Dramatic song plays in the background...
Well... It's not really a big deal or news as per say! I hope you have a linkedin page where you are documenting your journey? Your thread is inspiring, it will inspire more in LinkedIn and twitter. |

Anonymous6o6: I understand your point That guy that got into Amazon also did GACD (Google Andela Cloud development), I'm aware!
Recursion task is indeed 48hrs but the first deadline is 24hrs, for the second deadline, your score will be reduced to 65%
There's a lot to say but I understand where you are coming from. Thanks, everyone should just stick to what works for them. he did GACD wow!! The Recursion task was available since Tuesday, more like 72hrs, same way the static task has been available since Sunday. Keep up the good work. I was reluctant to apply in the first place , It was your thread that made me apply. I'm like your number 1 fan |

Anonymous6o6: I wanna understand you, so are you saying newbies should leave the alx materials provided available for them and learn python? Or JavaScript?
Then eventually when the program commences and for each project when you're given tasks with little time, you do what? Copy and paste? Let me further ask, are you saying you are able to do the projects smoothly because of your knowledge of JavaScript? (Depending on your answer then you should be able to explain one of the task using your knowledge of JavaScript).
This was the reason I created a group, provided a roadmap on how projects will be sent, the materials and even screenshots of the tasks. A serious minded person studies all this won't have any difficulties with the projects.
I was also formerly in the 7th cohort, I re-registered because I couldn't keep up with the projects and deadline. After re-registering, I started reading ahead, when the program commenced, I not only did my projects on time, I also helped a lot of people, I'm not trying to brag but to explain the importance of studying ahead.
Be honest with yourself and tell me straight up that we're being given enough time to study C? Can you? Today we were given projects on Recursion and the deadline was 24hrs, you had to study the materials, comprehend them and finish the project today. And you're saying..? They should study python? Despite the fact that C and python has similar syntax, the difference are too obvious. You can easily type (print (hello)) in python and you're good but that's not the case in C!
Well, everyone with their choice but whoever wants to make the project easier for him/herself should study ahead. As I said, to each his own, what is working for me is following the given curriculum, it might not work for others. I'm not new to coding, I have been solving challenges in codingwars etc, so I am surviving just fine. If you know python or JS, you can easily pick up C. In tech, years of experience matters alot. You can't compare someone that has 1yr experience coding consistently with python with python to someone that has 6months experience coding with python. The earlier you start frontend/backend personal training the better for you. Someone with 1yr practice is actually considered an intern in most companies, 2yrs for entry level. I didn't join alx to carry first, my goal is the ROOM. How many companies need C programmers? Many people in alx have coding experience, some even have work experience. I know someone in my cohort who has started learning web3 solidity incase any blockchain job pops up in the ROOM. Personally, I have started working on React/Redux apps with API calls that I can showcase on my personal portfolio project at the end of the program by God's Grace. Do you think that guy that got the Amazon job started coding with python, JavaScript and mysql nine months before getting his first job? Don't be surprised he even has AWS certification. By June next year, most companies won't care about how good in C you are, all they want to see is your frontend or backend skills plus DSA. No knowledge is a waste though, I will advise anyone starting this program to use 80% of their time practicing their real specialization and 20% reading ahead for C. Recursion tasks was 48hrs it was available on Tuesday. It is only grit and determination that will keep you in this course.Very soon we will move into python and javascript, then you will understand my point. I love your thread though and the idea of the group you created. Keep it up. |

Anonymous6o6: Bro this is seriously wrong oh One of the reasons why newbies end up dropping or quitting was because, they didn't have time to study the materials and still do the projects, studying ahead will give him an idea of the topic.
For August cohort, please join the group from the link posted here, I dropped the materials sent to us on ALX and the roadmap on how to go about it. STUDY AHEAD OH
No go study python and ignore the important ones, if you don't make it to the 80%, you won't be qualified to proceed to the next Trimester for python ohhhh to each his own, I'm happy I didn't fall 100% for the "read ahead" advice. Before, I began, I was even in a cohort 7 group chat. I was reading books on Linux etc and was going out of the curriculum at a point. When i resumed, I realised I had passed the scope of Linux, no knowledge is a waste though, I'm conversant with JavaScript so I was able to relate with C. That aside, I will advise anyone to spend their time learning core dev skills, I used my waiting period to learn react, Imagine if I was using it to learn Linux and C off-point? My two cents, abeg take your web development seriously. That's what worked for me though, when you enter alx you go survive, my score used to above 150, it went down because I didn't do the debugging task. When you enter, you go see road. Just be determined. That's my personal opinion, it might not work for everyone. |

Please how do you manage working with following up with this program. No knowledge is a waste, learn python, lots of alx students already know how to code in javascript or python before they started the program. Personally, I won't advise anyone to study c or shell basics on their own before the program because you can end up studying off point. Learn python, when the program starts, you will learn shell, c etc by using their curriculum. The program clearly states its payment plan. You either pay upfront, or you enroll through their financial aid/career bond option.
After your 4 or 6 months of training (depending on your course), you will be offered an internship opportunity or given a job. From there, you have a 2 - 3 year plan to pay back your career bond. See the website for more information on the payment plan - https://fellowship.thebulb.africa/courses
The laptop is given to all Fellows for the duration of their training which they may either buy-back after the training or return it. All these are clearly stated on the website's FAQ page @joshmoy will the company link you up to a job? Or, will you hustle for the job independently? |

I think a recession will be good news for Nigerian devs. Many companies will outsource to remote devs because it is a far cheaper option than paying devs resident in U.S. Imagine paying a Frontend, US based dev $20,000 while you can pay 2 Nigerian devs $1000 each and get better results |

Anonymous6o6: My Journey
Before now, I have been learning frontend development using W3school and LinkedIn Learning. I even got help from a friend who linked me to a backend developer for job opportunities. But due to the fact that I was still learning and haven't built any projects, I was given a link to finish up some basics projects and get back to him.
Since then, I have been focused on learning. I intend to learn JavaScript and react before building the projects.
Now, to the matter at hand, I recently discovered ALX software engineering program through their ads, made some research and it turned out to be legit. I quickly signed up, mostly because of their curriculum (I will drop pictures on that soon), which was pretty cool since I have seen what Udacity, Coursera and other online courses have to offer on software engineering.
Another reason I signed up was because it was free! Well they said this year's program was waived by Mastercard and I will be getting a certificate after completion, love it! Though I also heard one has to pay after graduating and getting a job.
Let me break down the program duration, the software engineering program is for 12months, 70hrs a week, 10hrs a day... Maybe it won't be up to that but this is base on my research. On the first month, one is required to get 80% percent score or get eliminated! Lol not killed tho, like removed. After graduation, you get added to the "Room" for job opportunities and build your connection, cool right?
After registering for the program, I was notified the onboarding would start on 2nd of may. On 30th of April, I was sent an email to read through the curriculum, activities, required committed and projects. I will be sending screenshots of the importance ones. I realized that I will be involved in group projects, solo projects, networking and more. hi, do you mind creating a WhatsApp group for those who have been accepted in the programme, or should I create one for us ? |

Programming › Re: Chrome Extension And Enhancement Of A Platform In Context To NL Anti-spambot by Techstar: 4:09pm On Apr 30, 2022 |
qtguru: What are Chrome extensions? depending on what type of user you are, Chrome extensions are simply tools you can use in the Chrome browser for enhanced features. This is a more general way to describe it to basic users. It can do additional things.
However, as a Developer, the more technical answer would be an extension through which Chrome Developers has provided ways to access DOM / BOM and also Native Chrome API. Extensions can simply do things without limit that a client (Document) can't do.
This gives the ability to enhance the content of a website in memory, meaning changes here are not permanent.
This brings me to my next pain point; The Nairaland Anti-spambot. I have been a very serious casual victim of this spambot. I have shared posts and content useful to users only to be blocked by the spambot.
This leaves one at the mercy of the mods, who sometimes can be pretty much very ineffective.
Solution
A simple concept is bypassing the antispam bot, the Anti-spambot works at the backend, and not the client to the best of my knowledge. With the chrome extension, we can simply extend NL to share contents for the programming section, this simply means we will need to install the chrome extension.
What does it mean?
We can easily embed content like Galleries, Videos and images for now.
I will share more concepts around this but here is the goal.
1. Create a Component for each media type 2. Create a text pattern of associating that pattern in a post. e.g Anti-bot sees a pseudo-code like [NLMedia type='gallery' id=xxxxx] and the extension simply does a lookup in the Db component type and renders the content. 3. The extension will allow you to create a Content-type and return the pseudo-code to be changed 4. All data stored in Firebase
I plan to do this in Svelte / Firebase and Chrome extension.
I think the implication of this, is that it gives us autonomous power over how we want NL to be expanded and also it's a concept of how a service can be built on top of an existing platform without fear of code block.
Please share inputs on this thought.
I got hit by the spambot recently again, and this is a pain in the neck for me.
Regards I'm very interested in this project. Do you mind if i join your team? |

Dialpad: While I understand that nairaland has traffic, the owner knows it is not worth some of the outrageous figures being put out online.
Show me a thread that has over 100k views despite being on front page.
Do not be surprised that the number of inactive and fake accounts amount to about 90%. If you have over 2 million members plus thousands of visitors how come threads don't have views in their 100k even 50k, that tells you the traffic is not that much as people assume.
How many unique comments do you find on a thread, I have seen Facebook or Instagram with over 10k comments... now you are talking about traffic, if you decide to buy nairaland for billions without proper analysis you could wake up with a shocker.
As an advertiser, would you do a repeat ad on nairaland or Google ads ? Nairaland will not give you the desired results because of the quality of its audience although it has great potentials. Run a budget of $1000 on Google ads and same on nairaland... most of the people that will fill your lead gen form are people that will tell you they thought your product was free or they were just testing.
Nairaland should find a way to significantly increase the number of its active subscribers, it should find a way to attract quality audience.
Reduce tribalism, we could have a mature conversation without the series of insults.
Truth is, you still have a long way to go You are very intelligent. Most active people here have atleast 2 accounts. If you decide to ban the tribalists and seive out the active users with more than 1 account, the total number of active users should be around 250k, 150m is a good price because of the potential the site has, anything more than that, is a bad purchase. I would rather use that money to build a new forum and wait on time. Nigeria has a huge growing population in the next 10yrs, you will have something far bigger than nairaland. Someone said the site makes 1m daily for Seun |
