PoliticsRe: Majority Of One-third Out Of Overall Senate Members Can Impeach Saraki – Sagay by Tecno66: 5:12pm On Aug 10, 2018
Even if two third of one third can remove him, let's be matured and civilized for once. Let the house meet normally not at awkward hours like trying to get justice through the back door. A US senate or British house of commons will not go and sit at 12 midnite like witches or on Sunday evening when people are resting at home because they want to craftly remove a SP. I see the handwriting of Oshiomhole in all this. He did it successfully in Edo and thinks it can be replicated in the senate.

This guy is too partisan. Same is Falana. Their legal interpretations are beclouded by political considerations. A guy who said Adeosun is okay to continue as finance minister irrespective of forgery allegations is saying this. I bet you, if Saraki were APC and PDP had the 53 senators scheming to remove him, he will say they need 73 senators to remove him.

PoliticsRe: PDP Jittery As APC, Akpabio Parley by Tecno66: 8:52am On Aug 04, 2018
PDP are extending re election ticket to woo APC elite while APC in their desperation are promising an end to EFCC harassment. After all, Magu takes his brief from them. See EFCC's renewed activities in Ekiti and Benue.
yns4real:
There were indications that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is in serious talks with the Minority Leader in the Senate, ex-Governor Godswill Akpabio; a move that has unsettled the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)

Akpabio might defect to the APC any moment from now once the “terms” are wrapped up, THE NATION learnt yesterday.

The APC is upbeat about the prospect, which analysts believe will be a major political mileage for President Muhammadu Buhari in the South-South.

A PDP top notch said last night that the party has been appealing to the ex-governor not to defect “but we cannot please him and then displease the governor of the state, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, who is the PDP leader in the state.”

There is no love lost between Akpabio and Emmanuel. Emmanuel was practically made governor by Akpabio in 2015.

It was learnt that Akpabio had made up his mind to defect on July 24 but was not recognised the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who got wind of his move, to make his intention public.

Notwithstanding, Akpabio showed signs of his departure from the PDP on Thursday when he boycotted the special meeting of the National Executive Committee of the PDP held to welcome defectors including Saraki and governors Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto) and Samuel Ortom of Benue state, among others.

A top APC source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, said: “The APC and some of our leaders are in serious talks with Akpabio, who is rated as a matchmaker in the South-South.

“The talks border on more deals for the South-South, especially increase in derivation formula; enhanced infrastructure for oil producing areas; how to sustain the ongoing reforms by President Muhammadu Buhari; and arresting the developmental slide in Akwa Ibom State.

“The former governor said his likely defection to APC is informed more by patriotism than selfish interest.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “The terms are still being worked out, but APC is favourably disposed to Akpabio’s defection.

“The ex-governor has an open mind, he has no airs and he does not pretend in asking for a better nation which he thinks Buhari can offer.

“In fact, it was part of the talks that made him visit Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday when the PDP national EXCO was meeting in Abuja.

“We will no doubt accept him into APC. This is a major development from the South-South.”

Findings, however, confirmed that top PDP leaders, including the National Working Committee of the opposition party, has been jittery in the past few weeks.

A member of the National Executive Committee of PDP said: “I think Akpabio has irreconcilable differences with Governor Udom Emmanuel and our leaders stepped into the matter and initiated reconciliation.

“If at the end he is defecting, we are suspecting that he wants to join the APC to settle scores with Emmanuel in 2019. The two leaders have been managing themselves, but Akpabio seems unhappy with the governor.

“We felt that defection is not an ideal option for Akpabio. Maybe he has another agenda.”

A member of the NWC said: “By the policy of our party, Governor Emmanuel cannot be denied the right of first refusal for the PDP gubernatorial ticket in 2019. We cannot abandon him to please Akpabio.

“You can see that as soon as Governor Samuel Ortom defected, he was automatically made the leader of PDP in Benue State.

“The power equation in PDP at present in Akwa Ibom State does not favour Akpabio. He is bound to be embittered.

“Some of our leaders have been comparing notes and there is this suspicion that Akpabio might defect because of multiple cases he has with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“The sad aspect is that the Senate Minority Leader does not share his position with anyone.

“At one of our meetings during the week, we all noticed that Akpabio was not vibrant and articulate in his speech. He spoke like a despondent leader who is fed up with PDP.

“Our fears were confirmed when he boycotted the NEC meeting on Thursday. He said he was travelling abroad, only for us to see him at the Villa with VP Osinbajo.

Earlier, we learnt that he had wanted to defect to APC on the floor of the Senate on July 24, but the President of the Senate, Dr. Saraki, who got intelligence report, did not allow him to have his way. “

Saraki also did not read the letters of defection of some PDP Senators to APC before he adjourned the sitting to September; a development APC senators saw as a clear abuse of his position as Senate President.

Our democracy is on reverse gear. This is how our politicians behave, they muddle up the whole arrangement. If they continue to do things without following constitutional provisions, I see military intervention loading fast. Tb Joshua said so few weeks ago.
stephanie11:
@POLITICSNGR

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, have described as "a desecration of the legislative sanctity", the on-going situation in Benue State in which eight out of the 30 members of the State House of Assembly have commenced impeachment process against the Governor and with the support of the police, the 22 other members who constitute more than two-third majority are kept away from the Assembly Complex.

In a statement jointly signed by their aides in charge of media, Saraki and Dogara also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to call the police to order and stop them being used to achieving political purposes.

"We have monitored closely the development in Benue State in which the impeached Speaker, Terkimbir Ikyange, led seven other members to serve impeachment notice on the state Governor, Samuel Ortom, while the 22 other members who constitute more than two-third majority have been prevented from having access to the chamber. We believe this is illegality and does not conform to parliamentary procedure on impeachment.

"We also note with surprise the role of the Police in this undemocratic event in which the minority is seeking to impeach a Governor against the position of the majority. We believe it is the sacred institution of the legislature that is being desecrated and rubbished in all these negative developments.

"The situation in Benue State House of Assembly has grave implication for the nation's democracy and it represents a throw-back to the period of dictatorship in our country. It also represents how the Nigeria Police are being misused to achieve political end. In a statement recently, the Presidency derisively referred to an era in the past where a minority number of legislators was used to impeach Governors who were unfriendly with the Federal Government. What we are seeing in Benue now is a return to that inglorious era.

"We believe this unlawful and unconstitutional move to impeach Governor Samuel Ortom by a minority should be condemned by all lovers of democracy, at home and abroad. We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to call the police to order and prevent a break-down of law and order. We also call on friends of Nigeria in the international community to lend their voice in condemning the perpetration of illegalities and actions that can subvert our democracy.

"There is already a tense atmosphere in Benue State following the recent killings. Nobody should encourage any action or move which may exacerbate the security situation in the North Central State. As leaders of the Federal legislature, we are ready to work with our colleagues in both chambers of the National Assembly to prevent any attempt to destroy any state legislature or use it to derail democracy", Saraki and Dogara stated.

This country is truly a zoo. If you must impeach people, are there no constitutional procedures to do that? Must it be forcibly done? Are we Barbarians? The APC chairman self looks like a chimp that escaped from the zoo. He believes every thing must be gotten by force. When he became gov in Edo, he used force to remove the house speaker. If they don't take things easy, I see tb Joshua's prophecy of military intervention happening. I think when military come, everybody go enter house. All the gragra go stop.

– There are ongoing plans by some All Progressives Congress (APC) senators working in connivance with the presidency to forcibly reopen the Senate ahead of the September 25 date it was officially expected to resume.

A presidency source told Daily Independent that the move was being considered in view of the suspicion that Senate President Bukola Saraki may have taken the decision for a long adjournment for “selfish reasons”.

Daily Independent gathered that the plot to have the Senate summarily reconvened with the objective of effecting Saraki and Ike Ekeremadu’s impeachment is part of the Plan B in the hatchery of those whose plot to allegedly remove them on Tuesday, last week, failed.

The source said they are seeking legal advice to this effect.

He said another reason being advanced was the anxiety of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the effects of the shutdown of the National Assembly on the commission’s N242, 445,322,600 2019 poll budget.
A notable member of the Reformed APC, who confirmed the plot, said the presidency was being persuaded by some powerful individuals to forcibly reopen the Senate, impeach Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, and subsequently arrest them.

He said if the move succeeded, Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and his Deputy, Yusuf Lasun, would also not be spared.

It was gathered that leading the plot on the part of the APC senators was Ahmed Lawan, the Majority Leader, and Adams Oshiomhole, the party’s national chairman.

Our source said: “The presidency is currently seeking the opinion of lawyers and experts on how it will be possible to reconvene the Senate ahead of the September date announced by the Senate President.

Once the move succeeds, I don’t see how Saraki will remain as Senate President. The same applies to his Deputy, Ekweremadu.”

According to the R-APC member, “The general impression in the presidency is that Saraki’s adjournment is not in the interest of the APC and the country, and they feel he cannot continue to hold the APC to ransom. So, if the plot sails through, he should consider himself gone as President of the Senate.”

Nigerians at the weekend said it would be unconstitutional for the All Progressives Congress (APC) – led Federal Government to reconvene the Senate before the September 25 official date announced by Bukola Saraki, the Senate President.

While these may seem impossible, many are afraid that the government can carry out the move, especially given the role played by Adams Oshiomhole, APC National Chairman, in the siege to Saraki and Ekweremadu’s homes last week prior to the defection of 14 senators to the opposition.

Speaking with Daily Independent, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), said the presidency lacked the power to reconvene the Senate ahead of the September 25 resumption date.

He, however, said if there was an urgent need for the Senate to reconvene in order to deliberate on an urgent matter such as the issue raised by INEC concerning funding of the 2019 election, the presidency could go to court to seek an order compelling the Senate to resume.

“No. the APC can’t reconvene the Senate. If the Senate decides to shut down for that period they decided to shut down, which is September 25, the executive arm of government cannot reverse it on their own.

“They may, however, resort, to court action to order them to open it, especially if there is a pressing need for them to reconvene such as the issue of funding of election,” he said.

Yunusa Tanko, National Chairman of the National Conscience Party (NCP), also said it would be unconstitutional for the presidency to attempt to forcibly reopen the Senate without the input of Saraki, who is the chairman of the National Assembly.

“I don’t think the APC-led Federal Government has that power. I believe the National Assembly can only be reconvened by the leadership of the National Assembly.

“If they attempt that, it will be a gross violation of democratic ethos.

“If there is any conservative way in which they want to reconvene the Senate, let them show us.

“But as far as I am concerned, it is the leadership of the National Assembly that can do the reconvening and that can only be done by the Senate President or the Speaker of the House of Reps.”

Speaking in a similar vein, Balarabe Musa, elder statesman and former governor of Kaduna State, said the presidency could only appeal to the Senate President to reconvene the Senate if there was a need for them to do so.

“They can only appeal to the Senate President to come and reconvene the parliament. They have no power to do that on their own. It will be unconstitutional if they do so,” he said.

In his remark, Yinka Odumakin, National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, said it would amount to political gangsterism and a return to military dictatorship if the executive arm of government decided on their own to reconvene the Senate.

“They lack such power and it will be political gangsterism carried to the extreme for the executive to now go and reconvene the Senate.

“Gradually, we are descending into a dictatorship which shouldn’t be since we are not under the military.

“So, I don’t think they want to carry out such act, but if they do, then that will be the end of democracy and we will be back to martial rule and military dictatorship,” Odumakin said.

This country has a long way to go with the kind of comments I am reading here. The news is every where of how the election was won by the highest bidder and people are making this kind of comments. I thought we should be more interested in the process that led to a winner rather than the winner. I voted in the June 12 elections and never saw money exchange hands. This new phenomenon of buying votes makes a mockery of election process. Imagine if video of money exchanging hands is seen by foreign observers. Which way Nigeria?.
ChangeIsCostant:
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rejects in its entirety whatever outcome is being concocted by the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, in the governorship election in Ekiti state.

The process, characterized by open alteration of results, brutalization of innocent citizens, barefaced cruelty and intimidation of our members by security agencies, is a brazen assault against democracy and a direct subversion of the will of the people which is completely unacceptable.

The PDP is armed with the details of all manipulations by the APC, who is being aided by security agencies and compromised INEC officials to rig the election, particularly, the audacious alteration and substitution of election results in favour of the APC at the collation centers amidst the brutalization of our agents.

The PDP also has details of all the polling units where we won, mostly with very wide margin ahead of the APC, only for the security agencies to aid the swapping and alteration of such results with those smuggled in by the APC at the collation centers.

It is instructive to state that all the issues we raised ahead of the election, including the conspiracy between the APC, some compromised INEC officials and security agencies; the importation of thugs from other states by the APC; the use of brutal force against our members and the alteration of results in favour of the APC, have all manifested.

The PDP holds strongly that there is no way our democracy can survive with an electoral process such as this, being witnessed today in Ekiti state under President Muhammadu Buhari and the current INEC.

This bald-faced subversion of the will of the people is a clear recipe for a serious crisis and we invite Nigerians and the international community to hold President Buhari and his APC as well as the INEC Chairman and heads of security agencies in Nigeria responsible for any breakdown of law and order in Ekiti state as a result of this election.

This on-going robbery of the franchise of Ekiti people is a horrible rape of our democracy and most uncharitable of President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC who hugely benefitted from the credible election midwifed by the PDP in 2015.
