PoliticsRe: Melaye: BBC Staff Picked, Handcuffed by Tecno66: 11:08am On Apr 28, 2018

Melaye: BBC staff picked, handcuffed

•How medical doctors, patients, others were arrested at hospital, taken into detention
•BBC staff also picked, handcuffed
•Journalists ordered not to bring phones or communication gadgets out of their pocketsLooks like we are back to military rule where everything is censured. Those clapping should continue. The man who brings up a kid tiger is most likely to end in its stomach.

Imagine being handcuffed by the police like a hardened criminal and taken into detention for several hours for treating a patient in a medical facility where you work as a doctor! Your only ‘offence’ against the law enforcement agents is that you attended to a patient! This was the case of some medical doctors at Zankli Hospital Abuja last Tuesday, April 24,2018.

The doctors were in their professional best to save the life of a senator, Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West Senatorial District at the Senate, who was brought into the hospital probably unconscious, following blockade of a police Hilux van conveying him to Lokoja, Kogi State and his subsequent removal by a mob of supporters opposed to the police action.

Besides the two doctors who were arrested, dragged into a waiting vehicle and handcuffed while being moved into detention facilities, patients and their relatives as well as their sympathizers, who were seen sitting outside the hospital premises around 2:35pm when a contingent of police stormed there in over 30 operational vehicles, were not spared. They were all rounded up and forced into some of the vehicles.

Journalists who had converged at the hospital to gather reports after learning that the senator was moved there for treatment, were not spared either. They were forcefully led out with an order not to bring their communication gadgets like mobile phones out of their pockets for recording or be shot by the police personnel led by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr Sadiq Bello.

A British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC’s driver, who had conveyed one of their reporters, Miss Dooshima Abu, to the hospital to cover event at the hospital was also picked. It took spirited efforts by journalists who approached the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, for possible intervention before the young man was unchained from seven others and set free. The hospital later confirmed that those arrested within their premises including their doctors had been released.

The unconscious senator who was on drip at the amenity ward of the hospital was forcefully detached, taken into a waiting police ambulance marked NPF 221 D to the National Hospital Abuja around 9:20 pm.

The journey of the senator to the hospital had begun around 7 am earlier in the day, when he turned himself to the operatives of the Nigeria Police, drawn from its Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, who had laid siege to his Maitama, Abuja house after being prevented from traveling to Morocco at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, by men of the Nigerian Immigration Service at the airport.

He was being taken to Lokoja Command of the Nigeria Police Force but the police plan was foiled by some people, possibly the senator’s supporters and some passers-by who were drawn to the shout of the senator struggling against the movement around the Area 1 Round About of the Federal Capital Territory.

Contrary to the claim that Melaye jumped out from a moving vehicle, while being taken to Lokoja, the senator was dragged out of a police Hilux van conveying him to the Kogi State capital, after the people blocked the police team and forcefully took him out of their grip during which he became unconscious in the process. “At the Area One Roundabout, people heard a man in the police vehicle shouting for help. The people were moved at the development and blocked the Police and in the process, forcefully pulled him out of the police vehicle, “Peter Babayemi, one of the passers-by had told newsmen who rushed to the scene of the incident.

According to him, their attention was drawn to the lawmaker’s plea for help, and immediately the SARS vehicle was surrounded by a sea of passers-by. He added that the operatives were overwhelmed by the number of passers-by and abandoned Melaye and drove off to avoid being lynched.

Babayemi said: “What happened was that we were at the Area One roundabout when we saw the SARS vehicle carrying someone. We saw the person struggling and shouting on top of his voice. So, many people now gathered to see what was happening.

Senator Dino Meleye : Policemen barricaded Senator Dino Meleye House at Maitama When we looked close, we saw it was Dino Melaye.

“Immediately, we started shouting that we know this man. Since some of us had read the news about what was happening to him, we said we won’t allow them take him anywhere. That was how we rescued him from them and they drove away when people became too many.”

The police team who had abandoned Melaye in the hands of the crowd later got wind of his whereabouts .

Journalists rushed immediately to the Zankli Hospital, at the Mabuchi District of the FCT, where he was taken to.
It was at this point that the police team got wind of the development and stormed there in a commando style, and started arresting anyone on sight.

The several truckloads of stern-looking policemen
barricaded the hospital’s entrance. The Police men drawn from the FCT Command flooded the premises, and conducted intensive search on vehicles entering and making their exit from the hospital.

The insistence of the police authority to have Melaye paraded at its Kogi State Command and subsequent arraignment in court in the state has raised some questions.

Recall that the criminal case instituted by the Nigeria Police against Senator Dino Melaye, Mohammed Audu, and two others has been transferred out of the Lokoja Federal High Court Division to the Abuja division of the court following Melaye’s application and alarm that his life was not safe in Kogi.

Recall also that when the case came up for mentioning last Thursday, the Prosecuting Counsel, G.O Ojo said he was ready to move the exparte motion requesting that the case be brought forward from the initial May 10 it was slated for.

His argument was premised on the fact that since the two suspects who indicted Dino in gun running, Kabiru Seidu (a.k.a Osama) and Nuhu Salisu (a.k.a Small) who had earlier escaped from police custody have been re-arrested, the case should commence immediately .

However, the presiding judge, Justice Phoebe Ayua had ruled against him, saying that she ought to have been notified of the new development on the case.

What will be the action of the court in the face of the police insistence on having the senator arraigned in court and possibly tried in Kogi State, instead of the Abuja court where his case has been moved to? What is the interest of the police in the having him arraigned in Kogi instead of Abuja? Melaye had alleged that the governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello was after his life.

Phone calls to the spokesman of the police to comment on this matter were not answered. There no responses to text messages too.

Their actions have been noted for future sanction. The man no dey forget those wey work against am o. They will get their full payment at the appropriate time. As for Tinubu, if he thinks he can use him as a puppet, he is in for a joker.
CilicMarin:
President Muhammadu Buhari last night solicited the support of All Progressives Congress (APC) governors for the emergence of former Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, as the next national chairman of the party.

This came as National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, yesterday described as “absolutely childish” the endorsement of Oshiomhole, to take over from him as national chairman by some party stakeholders from the South-south zone.

Buhari, who met with the governors behind closed doors at First Lady Conference Hall in the Presidential Villa, tabled only one agenda before them.
A presidential source who did not want to be named, told journalists last night that the sole aim of the meeting was to persuade governors to work for the emergence of Oshiomhole as the party’s next national chairman.

“The party’s national convention where new members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) will emerge has been slated for May 14 in Abuja.
“It is not clear yet if the party’s current Chairman, Oyegun, will be seeking re-election at the convention but the president has resolved to support Oshiomhole’s candidature.

“The president called this meeting with the progressive governors to ask them to back Oshiomhole’s candidature. That’s the purpose of the meeting. That is the president’s position,” the source said.
Meanwhile, Oyegun has described as “absolutely childish” the endorsement of Oshiomhole to take over from him as national chairman by some party stakeholders from the South-south zone.

Oyegun who did not confirm whether he would seek re-election as APC national chairman or not, told journalists yesterday that he was still making consultations and would make his position public in few days.
Ahead of the May 14 national convention of the APC, the governors elected on the platform of the party will today hold a meeting with Oyegun and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) to consider the level of preparations for the event.

THISDAY gathered from a party source that the meeting would among other issues, decide on the budget for the event and how to raise funds to ensure the success of the convention.
There have been speculations that both Oyegun and Oshiomhole among others were in the race for the exalted APC position.

However, in what seemed like a tacit confirmation of Oshiomhole’s interest in the race, a meeting of the forum of South-south APC stakeholders was held on Monday in Edo State capital where state chairmen from Edo and Delta were said to have endorsed the candidacy of Oshiomhole.

However, while reacting to the development yesterday, Oyegun said it was “childish. Absolutely childish.”
He said the voting is to be done at the convention and not in state houses or in government houses.
When specifically asked to comment on the endorsement of Oshiomhole and his own rejection by Edo State chapter of the party, Oyegun said: “They have their reasons for what they did and you have to respect their own reasons, however wrong it is. Don’t bother about this teaser, I will give a comprehensive interview, to speak with you when the time comes.”

The national chairman further said he was not perturbed by the action of his home chapter.
“No. It doesn’t bother me because one of those who wants my job is from Edo and he was the immediate past governor and he was very instrumental in installing the present governor, so I think it is a case of ‘rub my back, I rub your back’ that is playing out.”

On whether he would still go ahead and re-contest for his office despite the opposition from the home front, Oyegun simply said: “The consultation, I think is concluded. Well, I’m going to know when the convention committee announces their programmes, then when I’m going to buy a form, if I will re-contest I will let you know.”

Meanwhile, the party yesterday inaugurated a screening and appeal committees for aspirants contesting the May 5 primary election to elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2018 Ekiti governorship election.
The party’s National Organising Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso, who inaugurated the committees said the screenings were mandatory for all aspirants.
He charged committee members to continue in the APC’s tradition of adhering to due process and ensure fairness during the exercise.

At close of the submission of nomination forms, 33 aspirants made up two women and 33 men are on queue for the contest.
Members of the screening committee include the former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva who is to serve as Chairman, Denton Ogbuehi (Secretary); Samaila Hassan Yusuf, Hajia Amina Gamawa (member); Ayo Afolabi, Hon. Bilyamin Shinkafi and Mohammed Mustapha.

Speaking while inaugurating the committees, Izunaso said they would rely on the party’s 2014 guidelines for the nomination of candidates for public office; the party’s constitution and the 1999 Nigerian constitution (as amended) in carrying out the assignment.
He disclosed that 33 aspirants picked expression of interest and nomination forms, the highest recorded by the party.

The screening appeals committee comprises: Abuzarri Ribadu (Chairman); Tunde Esan (Secretary); Hon. Kayode Oseni, Mr. Osaro Bizugbe and Edem Selong.
Speaking on behalf of the committee members, the Chairman of the screening committee, Timipre Sylva promised that the committees would be thorough and fair to all aspirants in carrying out the assignment.
“We will do a thorough job and make sure that no misfit or anybody not qualified pass through this committee,” he said.

However, the Delta State chapter of the APC has rejected Oshiomhole as the chairmanship candidate in the forthcoming national convention of the party.
The rejection came as the chairmen of four states in the South-south had earlier denied endorsing the former Edo State governor.

The four states chairmen of the party who had earlier dissociated themselves from the purported endorsement are Davies Ikanya, Rivers; Joseph Fafi, Bayelsa; Etim John, Cross River, and Amadu Attai, Akwa Ibom.
They said at a press conference yesterday that Oyegun, the incumbent chairman of the party, reserved the right to seek a reelection.

They had stormed out of the South-south zonal caucus meeting held at the Edo State Government House last Monday in protest of what they said were plans by Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and the Zonal Vice-Chairman of the APC, Hilliard Eta, to adopt Oshiomhole as the consensus chairmanship candidate of the region.

Speaking to journalists, the South-south states chairmen said they were ambushed with Oshiomhole’s adoption agenda at the meeting.
They insisted that Oyegun should be given a right of first refusal to seek re-election for the position.

In a statement issued by the Delta State Deputy Chairman of the party, Chief Cyril Ogodo, yesterday the party described the adoption as desperate and despicable.
The statement distanced the state APC from the purported endorsement.
Also commenting about the development, the leader of APC in Delta State, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, expressed shock that the national vice chairman South-south could contrived such a dangerous and dishonorable situation.

He stated emphatically that the leaders and stakeholders of APC had at no time deliberated on adopting Oshiomhole as their candidate.
But the National Vice Chairman (South south) of the party, Eta, yesterday explained the reasons the leadership of the party decided to endorse Oshiomhole for the position of the national chairman of the party,
He said: “Oshiomhole is the rebranding APC needs” ahead of the 2019 general election.

Eta said the party followed the tradition and due process in endorsing the former Edo State governor contrary to views from few leaders of the party in the zone, recalling that it was in similar manner that Oyegun was endorsed in 2014 in Port Harcourt at a meeting hosted by the then Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi where he said, Oyegun was adopted as the candidate of the zone based on the position of his state party leaders.

On the issue of four chairmen who disassociated themselves from the Benin meeting, Eta clarified that “I know that Cross River State does not have a chairman as we speak, so it could not have been four chairmen. Let me say that the chairmen are members of the zonal executive committee just like the other 164 people in the zonal committee of the party.

“We are not holding a state executive meeting, we were holding a zonal committee meeting, and in the zonal executive committee, we have over 168 people, including senators, governors, deputy governors, former senators and former House of Representatives members. So the chairmen who stormed out of the meeting were not speaking for their states. Let me tell you something: Senator Nelson Effiong seated and participated in the voting when his chairman stormed out and said he disassociated himself.” he said
On why they picked Oshiomhole ahead of Oyegun, Eta said: “Oshiomhole fought the god fathers of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State and defeated them. He has the name, the experience to change the fortunes of our party.

“I am the National Vice Chairman for close to four years now and what I can say now is that this party needs rebranding, reinvigoration, creativity, and need to build strong leadership. I can tell you that we have been lacking very seriously in the leadership at the national level of our party. And in bringing in Oshiomhole on board, I can tell you that the party will have a new lease of life. The impunity that has crept in the APC will be halted. The laws of the party will be respected.

Agencies like EFCC, ICPC, DSS, Police should show allegiance to the Nigerian state and not to a party or a president. As at today, the prime minister of Israel is under investigation and may be forced to resign soon because they have strong independent institutions. That cannot happen here. If you speak against what they are doing now, running the country as if it is a police state, some partisan folks here will refer you to similar incidents that took place during Jonathan's administration as if a wrong done in the past is a licence to continue to do things wrongly.
Emmalez:
PDP has reacted to the faceoff embattled senator Dino Melaye is having with the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement released on their social media platforms, the opposition party said Dino is being harrassed by the Federal government because of his firm support for senate president Bukola Saraki, who was never the government's choice for the number three seat of power. Read the statement below

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decries the relentless assault by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Federal Executive against the institution of the National Assembly, particularly, the Senate.

Nigerians have noted how the leadership of the Senate and elected senators of the Federal Republic are being harassed, arrested, detained and even arraigned on trumped-up charges for holding opinion divergent to that of the executive arm.

Since the emergence of the current leadership of the Senate outside the preference of the APC and the executive arm, the Senate has been under attack while senators who show support for the leadership are being hounded and harassed by agents of the executive.

The world has been watching with horror since it started with the arraignment of Senate President Bukola Saraki, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and other senators on trumped-up charges as well as attempts to rope in the Deputy Senate President on charges related to treason.

Today, we are witnessing the harassment and arrest of Senator Dino Melaye, who is known for his support for the Senate leadership and his criticisms of the excesses of the executive arm.

Currently, Senators Aliyu Wamakko, Rabiu Kwakwanso and Danjuma Goje are all being harassed for holding opinions that do not suit the whims and caprices of the executive.

Only last week, the security architecture in the National Assembly was compromised, paving the way for the invasion of the Senate chambers by strangers who disrupted proceedings, harassed and threatened our lawmakers and forcefully took away the mace.

We know that the unrelenting assault is aimed at silencing strong dissenting voices, emasculate the legislature and prevent it from playing its constitutional duties of checking the excesses and impunity of the executive arm.

We urge Nigerians to look beyond partisan sentiments and join in condemning the attack on the institution of the legislature, without which we cannot be a democratic nation.

Finally, the PDP appeals to our lawmakers not to allow their spirits to be broken or buckle to intimidation. They must continue in their pursuit of their oath of office and allegiance and in their onerous goal of making laws for the good governance of our nation.

BENIN—GOVERNOR Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has said that it was no longer fashionable for Nigerians to continue to embark on medical tourism abroad, asserting that government at all levels must provide access to quality and affordable healthcare services for Nigerians.
The governor disclosed that it was in the pursuit of quality healthcare services that his administration concluded plans to begin the construction of 20 technology-driven Primary Healthcare Centres, PHCs, across the state before the end of the month.
Speaking when he received board members of Lily Hospital, Warri and Benin centres, led by the Acting Chairman, Dr. Ovadje Oviemo, on a courtesy visit to the governor at Government House Benin City, he noted: “It is no longer fashionable for Nigerians to continue to travel abroad for medical treatment.
Therefore, it is important for government to provide access to quality and affordable healthcare services for the people in the country.
“As a government, our strategy is to use the state Health Insurance Scheme to provide access to quality and affordable healthcare for Edo people. We are working with healthcare providers and consultants to re-think the state healthcare system to complement other economic development initiatives.
“This month, the state government will roll out the first 20 primary healthcare centres. The plan is to ensure equitable distribution of healthcare centres across the state in the next 20 to 30 months. With this, we will be certain that at least one primary healthcare centre is sited in each ward across the state. We intend to construct between 200 to 250 PHCs in the state.”

PoliticsRe: FG Looters’ Lists Childish – Dickson by Tecno66: 10:39am On Apr 19, 2018
aminatahiru:
of course the looters list is a huge distraction! distracting the entire public from their failure. APC considers PDP as a threat and they will do any and everything to make sure PDP looses in 2019. the fact Remains that the present Administration has failed and there is no way they can unite Nigeria when they are the cause of the division.
If they are to unite Nigeria, they need to unite themselves first and I dont see that happening soon because of conflicting interests or have you seen 2 dogs playing with bone? No, they fight over it.
PoliticsRe: FG Looters’ Lists Childish – Dickson by Tecno66: 10:29am On Apr 19, 2018
Please tell them sir.
11Ebisco:
Yenagoa – Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State on Wednesday described as childish and uncalled-for the looters’ lists released by the Federal Government and celebrated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Condemning the move of the Federal Government, Dickson said the looters’ lists were a total distraction on the polity.

He spoke during a live media interview in his office in Yenagoa, the state capital.

He stated that “the cluelessness and insensitivity of the APC has left the country divided more than ever before” and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently unite Nigeria.

According to him, the ruling APC is grossly fragmented and disorganised and had failed abysmally.

He also condemned what he termed the constant demonisation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the APC.

Dickson, who reiterated his belief in the two dominant political parties, advised the Federal Government to deliver on their promise to Nigerians.

The governor lamented the spate of senseless killings in Nigeria and urged the APC-led Federal Government to focus on tackling insecurity and economic recession, instead of distracting Nigerians with the “so called looters’ lists”.

“This country needs two strong political parties. A united, not fragmented party in government and a cohesive and clear-headed opposition party.

“The constant demonisation of the PDP by the APC, for me, is childish and uncalled-for. I have the feeling that the APC, though in power, still behaves like a party in the opposition and on a campaign mode”, Dickson stated.

He continued: “I believe the APC has failed on its promise to Nigerians. They have failed to secure the country; the country is on a precipice. I think they should have done better than they are doing right now.

“The PDP made its mistakes but it achieved a lot for our democracy and our country. There is too much division in the country right now, and the Federal Government has to unify the country.

“They should look at the wanton killings in the country not only by Boko Haram but by the herdsmen and arrest the ugly situation”.

You are right there. In an attempt to catch up with the south, half baked graduates may have, I repeat, MAY HAVE been turned out. These things are done when the academic board meets to approve the results. They expand the goal post so that more goals can be scored.
IdeyFindWife:
The midget is right on this one with kinda graduates they're churning out around the northern region.

E don tey wey North don dey shift goal-post lowering cutoffs, man manipulating quotas etc churning out half-baked cretins and still souping up major opportunities for their dullards in the failed Quota System to the detriment of other tribes, now their penalties don dey enter throwing.

If Federal Civil Servants got the same test, we know those who would get hit the most and we're not being tribal.

It's simple logic: Garbage In, Garbage Out. But, a predominantly northern-influenced govt, regardless of who's president over the years, ensured the garbage always rose to the top!
