Sevilla offers Nigerian striker two-year contract extension after impressive performance

By Chijioke Jannah

Sevilla have offered Nigerian-American female striker, Toni Payne, a two-year contract extension following an impressive first season in Spain.

Toni Payne agreed on Tuesday to sign a contract extension, tying her to Sevilla until 2021.

The Nigerian-American forward had agreed to a one-year deal with the Spanish outfit in June 2018.

The former Concacaf Women’s U-17 winner with the USA joined Sevilla after ending her two-year sojourn with Netherlands Eredivisie women’s champions Ajax in July 2018.

On her debut season in Spain, Payne impressed scoring 10 goals and provided three assists in 30 appearances, including three goals in Spanish Queen’s Cup same term.

Having excelled in her maiden outing for Cristian Toro’s side, the 24-year-old was handed a new two-year contract at Campo Huerto de la Mariana.

“Toni Payne will play three seasons wearing the Sevilla FC jersey,” the club announced in a statement on its website on Tuesday.

“The 24-year-old attacker from Birmingham will extend her stay in Spanish football, which was premiered in the last academic year 2018/2019 by the Seville team.

“Her tip of speed and effectiveness are two qualities highly valued by the technicians.

“In summary, Payne has signed some very interesting numbers in her first year in the capital of Andalusia.

“Over 30 matches, broken down by 27 in the Iberdrola League and three in the Copa de la Reina, contributed seven points.

“These figures are rounded up with two assists. The 2019/2020 project continues to take shape with the continuity of Toni Payne.”

Having ensured their top-flight survival last season, Sevilla will aim to go all the way in the 2019/20120 season, having retained the services of Payne, who is keen to represent Nigerian Super Falcons.

Netherlands Don’t Need Danjuma, He Was Capped To Stop Him From Playing For Nigeria
December 7, 2018

Club Brugge forward Arnold Groeneveld Danjuma was capped by the Netherlands to stop his planned switch of allegiance to the Super Eagles of Nigeria, according to Dutch journalist Roland Mark.

Danjuma has settled down nicely in the Belgium top division since his move from second division Dutch outfit NEC Nijmegen on a free transfer in the summer and his form led to a tug for his international future between Nigeria and the Netherlands.

Born in Nigeria, the forward whose father is also from the West African country has spent the most part of his life in the Netherlands and represented their U19 team three years ago but as at his last game for the U21s this year, he was still eligible to play for Nigeria at senior level.

All of that ended when he played for the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League game against Germany, where he was introduced as a substitute in the final 22 minutes of the game.

” Injury made him miss the recent games for the Dutch national team but it’s clear to see why he was hurriedly capped by the Netherlands. He isn’t even the best player among the forwards at U21 level, his debut came to many as a surprise but you have to understand his case”, Roland Mark told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” Look he spoke about been open to representing Nigeria at senior level after a game for the U21s.
Coach of the senior national team of Netherlands Ronald Koeman was among the people who criticised how Tyronne Ebuehi was lost to Nigeria.

His move is to keep away from Nigeria, something they didn’t do with Hakim Ziyech who now plays for Morocco “, he concluded.

'Nigeria One Of The Favourites To Win AFCON' - Algeria Captain Riyad Mahrez Wary Of Super Eagles

In an interview after Algeria advanced to the semifinal of the Africa Cup of Nations, Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez is certain of one thing, that the Super Eagles will be more formidable than their quarterfinal opponents, Ivory Coast.

The Desert Foxes captain pointed out that the Super Eagles have an advantage as they faced South Africa on Wednesday while the North Africans battled the Elephants the following day.

It is fair to say that Nigeria are the favourites heading into tomorrow's fixture as they have never lost to Algeria on the field of play for 29 years.

''Yes, it's true that Nigeria is a very tough opponent. This is one of the favorites of this competition,'' Mahrez was quoted as saying by Le Buteur.

''Nigeria is always playing the leading role in the Africa Cup of Nations. First we will recover well because we will have a day less than them, then we will get to work to be on top of the day.''

The former African Footballer of the Year is optimistic about their chances of beating Nigeria and qualifying for the final.

Mahrez continued : ''Obviously, I am very optimistic like my teammates. We have achieved so far an exceptional journey in this AFCON.

''We have won a lot of games, that of Ivory Coast is the only one where we went to a penalty shootout.

''This drives us to be optimistic but we will base ourselves on work. We will prepare for this game well and give it all.''

Mahrez was in the Algerian side beaten 3-1 by Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier in Uyo in November 2016 and also started for the North Africans in the return leg.

AFCON: Ex-Algeria Striker, Boutabout: Nigeria Lack ‘Big Name’ Players; But Have Speed, Quality In Attack

Mansour Boutabout, a former Algeria international, says the Super Eagles lack big name players but quickly notes that Rohr’s men are full of speed and quality in the attack.

Boutabout told Francefootball.fr ahead Sunday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations semifinal match between Algeria and Nigeria in Cairo that the Super Eagles possess speed and quality going forward, and submits that the semifinal clash would be a difficult game.

“It’s the last straight line. There is the physical freshness (among the Algerian players), but now it is mostly the mind that will make the difference,” said Boutabout who was capped 22 times by Algeria and scored 6 goals.

“It is the strength of the group that must carry you. I do not think we need to change much (in the starting lineup). But on the other hand, I feel that changes should be made earlier in the game.

“It will not be easy. There are no big stars in Nigeria, but there is speed and quality in the (Super Eagles’) attack.

Boutabout also reflects on the Fennecs’ quarterfinal triumph over the Elephants of Ivory Coast.

“So far, this is the biggest game of this CAN. All the ingredients were present. There was play, intensity. The Ivorians have clearly raised their level of play.

“I was particularly impressed by the offensive trio, Kodjia, Zaha and Gradel. Algeria seemed a little notch above me.

“They were efficient in the first half, and should have killed the match with Bounedjah’s (missed) penalty kick.”

Boutabout represented Algeria at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia which Nigeria won. The Algerian team lost to Morocco in the quarterfinals.

AFCON2019: Westerhof: Algeria Not Strong Enough To Stop Super Eagles

Nnamdi Ezekute

Clemens Westerhof has told Completesports.com that he does not consider Desert Foxes of Algeria ‘strong enough’ to oust the Super Eagles in the semifinals of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The Dutchman says he’s strongly convinced that the AFCON title is for Nigeria, that Super Eagles have their own fourth continental title ambition in their hands.

The Super Eagles AFCON 1994 title -winning coach spoke exclusively to Completesports.com from his base in the Netherlands ahead Sunday’s AFCON 2019 semifinal confrontation between the Super Eagles and the Desert Foxes of Algeria.

“Super Eagles will win, yes. Algeria to stop Super Eagles? No, they are not strong enough to beat the Super Eagles,” Westerhof boasted.

“When they (Super Eagles) lost to Madagascar, I said it was not the Eagles I knew. I said it was shameful, disgraceful.

“Now they are in top form. With Cameroon out, South Africa gone home too, so it is Super Eagles and the cup. It is in their hands and I don’t see Algeria stopping them.”

He added: “Yes, Super Eagles will win (against Algeria). They will also win the cup. The players are experienced, they are now playing with good mentality.

“It (winning the title) is in their hands. They can win it. Algeria is not a problem.”

Westerhof arrived Nigeria in 1989 and the following year (1990) he steered the Super Eagles to a silver medal finish in Algeria.

At Senegal ’92 AFCON, Westerhof’s Super Eagles finished in third place, setting the tone for the 1994 triumph in Tunisia as well as Nigeria’s debut at FIFA World Cup finals in the USA.

Since he left the the Nigeria job, Westerhof has not hidden or pretended about his love for the nation’s football, particularly the Super Eagles.

The Algeria – Nigeria semifinal match on Sunday at the Cairo International Stadium will kick off at 8pm Nigerian time.

AFCON2019: Algeria Coach, Belmadi, Blasts Nigerian Media

The expected hostility that may happen before, during and after the semi final match between Nigeria and Algeria Sunday may have started to play itself out Saturday when the coach of the Desert Foxes, Djamel Belmadi, took a swipe on a question asked by Nigerian media at the pre-match conference.

A Nigerian journalist, Chisom Mbonu-Ezeoke, had asked the coach to comment on the incident that happened in the last match against Côte ‘d’ Ivoire when his defender, Sofiane Feghouli, simulated by forcing his hand on Wilfred Zaha and fell down waiting for the referee to blow for a foul play inside the box.

The short video clip of the incident had gone viral but when asked about the scene the coach simple turned the journalist question down and instead questioned her professionalism.

The media room was raging with anger when all the Algerian media men applauded the response but it took the coordinator of the programme some minutes before normalcy returned to the room.

“Gentlemen of the press, we need to be conscious of the fact that we are journalists and not fans, the clapping is disgraceful and tomorrow in the press gallery we must conduct ourselves and ensure that we don’t turn the arena into a fans pavilion, “ the Media Coordinator, Ibrahim Sani from Ghana remarked after the incident.

Meanwhile Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr was earlier asked the same incident and how he intends to take care of expected simulation of the Algerian players.

“Honestly I did not notice the incident but all I know is that FIFA frowns at such things hence we leave that to referee to handle. All my energy is channeled towards how we handle our match plans and the tactics we intend to adopt,” he remarked.

Kenneth Omeruo also said that as a defender, they have instruction from the coach to minimize or eradicate fouls in the vital area.

“We will be very alert to any form of antics from the Algerians and every one of us would be ready against the unprofessional match plan they may want to adopt,” he said with enthusiasm as he left the arena to join the rest of the team in camp.

Collins Excited over first Starting Role

FC Padeborn of Denmark (German) defender, Jamilu Collins has described his starting role in the match against South Africa as a dream come true.

The defender was given the nod ahead of popular Ola Aina for the Cairo International Stadium cracker and many soccer fans were happy with his playing style especially for not giving South African Percy Tau any breathing space that will threaten Nigeria’s defense line.

“It was a dream come true that I was chosen ahead of others in the mix. And I’m delighted that I was able to overcome the stage fright at the start of the match and at the end we won.

“Let me also say that I’m not here to take anybody’s position but just to contribute my quota into the team. It is left to the coach to select his team and everyone here is qualified to play for Nigeria,” he said.

Nigerian star Chukwueze finally opens on why his move to Arsenal failed in 2016

Oluwatomiwa Babalola

- Samuel Chukwueze has revealed he almost joined Arsenal in 2016

- The 20-year-old said the move failed to pull through after his academy failed to agree a deal with the Gunners

- Chukwueze moved to Spain in 2017 and has been exciting for Villarreal since then

Super Eagles youngster Samuel Chukwueze has insisted he is opened to joining a Premier League club after his proposed move to Arsenal collapsed three years back.

The Nigerian winger has been impressive for his Spanish League side Villarreal from Diamond Academy in 2016 one year after winning FIFA U17 World Cup with Golden Eaglets.

He scored his first goal for the senior national team during their 2-1 victory over South Africa at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations championship in Egypt.

The 20-year-old has scored eight goals and three assists in all competitions for the Yellow Submarines so far.

Chukwueze scored five goals and two assists in 26 La Liga appearances at the end of 2018-19 season and he has now attracted interests from Premier League title-chasers Manchester City and Liverpool according to the Daily Mail.

"Playing in England is still an ambition for me,” he told Team Talk. "I need to keep on working hard and to keep improving. I really want to play in England.

"It was very close for me to sign for Arsenal, almost had the contract in my hands. Unfortunately, it did not work out fine with my academy due to the side of agreement and payment. They did not agree with the terms of the contract.”

The winger has been likened to Dutch legend Arjen Robben, who has been regarded by many as one of the best wide-players of his generation.

Spanish football reporter Guillem Balague describes the Nigerian youngster's ability as “unbelievable” and stressed that this is a player who is “exciting to watch”.

He told BBC Sport: "He has just been called up into the senior Nigeria national team and has previously won the Under-17 World Cup with them in 2015.

"Only 19 and at La Liga side Villarreal, Chukwueze is an attacking midfielder who can play in both wide areas and his dribbling ability is unbelievable.

"He has already scored in the league and cup and you have a player who is new and exciting to watch.”

South Africans hail Chukwueze, Ndidi

Samuel Chikwueze

Sodiq Oyeleke

South Africans on Thursday hailed Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze and Winfred Ndidi for their outstanding performances in their 2-1 quarter-final triumph over Bafana Bafana at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Chukwueze was in blistering form scoring the game’s opener before William Troost-Ekong sealed the hard-fought win with a late striker to send Nigeria to the semi-finals.

The South Africans took to social media to express their delight at the displays of both players, who played major roles in the victory.

Xolani Yamani said, “The game was not for Thamsanqa Mkhize, and other players. They find it difficult to mark the Nigerian wingers. Ndidi took over the midfielder.”

“The pace from Nigerian wingers was too much. Even Sifiso Hlanti struggled against Chukwueze,” Itist Shego added.

The South Africans alsoblamed coach Stuart Baxter for playing “wrong tactics” in the game.

One of them, Zukisani said, “We never looked like the team that wanted to win. Honestly, I didn’t see where the goal could come from.”

South Africa Midfielder, Zungu: We Deserved Victory Against Nigeria

South Africa midfielder Bongani Zungu has rued Bafana Bafana’s disappointing exit from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and believes the side deserved victory against the Super Eagles in their quarterfinal clash, Completesports.com reports.

Stuart Baxter’s men went down to a 2-1 defeat against the Super Eagles in the encounter played at the Cairo International Stadium.

Zungu equalised for the South Africans in the 70th minute cancelling out Samuel Chukwueze’s 27th minute strike.

“First of all, a very disappointing result for us,” Zungu said after the game.

“First half, we gave them a lot of respect. Second half, the coach told us to press them high and I think we did quite good and we were moving the ball well.

“I felt like we were going to score, and when we scored the goal we were in the game, but unfortunately, we lost concentration in the end.

“It’s very disappointing, we are sad, but I am very proud of the team. We fought hard, we didn’t start the tournament good, but we should have won this one. But it’s part of the game.”

The way Chikwueze controls the ball even in the most difficult positions and situations, only Victor Moses does that among the Super Eagles players.

At one point his great sense of control caught the attention of the Camera man.

He was a delight to watch and a thorn in the flesh to he defense of the S/Africans.

I want him to do one more season with Villarreal before leaving to work with "jurgen klopp"

Nigeria vs Guinea: 5 things we learnt as Super Eagles qualify for Round of 16

By Ifreke Inyang

Nigeria has become the first team at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, to book a spot in the last 16.

The Super Eagles defeated their biggest rival in Group B Guinea by a lone goal on Wednesday, to confirm their place in the next round.

So, what are the five things we learnt from the fixture at Alexandria?

1. Easy draw in the next round: With Gernot Rohr’s all but certain to finish top of Group B, they will likely get a third-placed team in the Round of 16.

Although there are no small countries anymore in (African) football, it would be better to face the heavyweights much later in the competition.

2. Omeruo, Man of the Match: The defender, who spent last season on loan at Leganes from Chelsea, was in sparkling form against Guinea.

Solid at the back, Omeruo proved decision at the other end of the pitch, rising highest to head in the winner.

A lot of fans and pundits were surprised he kept his place ahead of Troost-Ekong, to partner the returning Leon Balogun. But on the strength of today’s performance, he justified his selection.

3. The Iwobi conundrum: Following the victory over Burundi, there were widespread calls for Rohr to drop skipper John Obi Mikel and start Alex Iwobi as a no. 10.

The German listened and made the change. But the Arsenal man was a huge let down overall. He was jittery and clumsy all through the first half and only improved a bit after the break. The search for his uncle Jay Jay Okocha’s replacement is still on.

4. Akpeyi much better: Although it took the Kaizer Chiefs’ stopper just two minutes to flap at his first ball, he produced a much more assured performance.

Credit has to be given to the Omeruo-Balogun axis in front of him, that served as a wall of resistance.

5. Kick Keita Out: Paul Put started the Liverpool midfielder against the Super Eagles, hoping that he would pull the strings against the three-time champions.

Instead, Keita was given a kick around by Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo and hardly stayed on his feet to influence the game. Jurgen Klopp must have been grinding his teeth, as his man kept falling and rolling around in agony. He was eventually substituted off.

Though I don't trust the lineup yet...I do hope it's for real .
If Ekong isn't suffering from any knock and Rohr really dropped him,it means the man isn't joking....He isn't respecting anybody... In short, him don kolo grin

Theophilus Afelokhai: Super Eagles have no AFCON goalkeeping issues

Theophilus Afelokhai – the Enyimba of Aba first choice goalkeeper, says there is no goalkeeping issues in the Super Eagles, not even in the ongoing 32nd Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Afelokhai, a former Kano Pillars captain, says all the three goalkeepers Gernot Rohr took to Egypt are all good enough for the job, stressing that Nigerian football is not in short supply of quality goalkeepers.

The hugely decorated shot-stopper spoke against the back drop of criticism, fears and worries by Nigerians who suggest the goalkeeping department of the senior national team remains the weakest point of the squad.

“Nigeria is blessed with lots of good goalkeepers,” the soft-spoken goalie told newsmen in an exclusive interview.

“And at any point in time, the bests are picked to represent the country even at the ongoing Nations Cup in Egypt.

“I believe we don’t have any reason to worry about the qualities of the goalkeepers coach Rohr took to Egypt.

“I don’t also believe there is any need to say the Super Eagles goalkeeping department is weak, no.

“Individually, they are fantastic goalkeepers, as a team, they are doing well and we should support them with prayers.”

Many, especially those who follow his career in the domestic top flight, NPFL believe he’s ripe enough to be the Super Eagles’ number one. But Afelokhai reasons differently, saying God’s time is the best.

“When it pleases God for me to make it in the Super Eagles, He will make it happen,” he said.

“One has to wait for God’s appointed time. There is time for everything and for everybody. Those who are in the team right now are worthy of it, so we must support them through prayers.”

The Super Eagles tackle Guinea in Alexandria today, in their second Group B match of the ongoing 32nd Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, needing a win of whatever margin to book a ticket for the Round of 16 . The kickoff is 3:30pm Nigerian time.

NFF Thanks President Buhari After Receiving AFCON Money

The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed receiving part of the money approved by the Federal Government for participation of some National Teams in international competitions, including the Super Eagles’ participation at the ongoing 32nd Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

NFF’s Acting President, Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi (in the absence of President Amaju Pinnick who is fully involved with organization as President of AFCON) said on Tuesday that the Federation received part of the money on Tuesday morning and had immediately launched the process to convert the sum to American Dollars to pay the players their only outstanding entitlement – the win bonus for the match against Burundi in Alexandria on Saturday evening – and for subsequent matches.

“We want to specially thank His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari for his keen interest in resolving this matter quickly, which has enabled us to receive part of the money in record time. We have immediately started the process of converting the money to American Dollars at the Central Bank in order to pay the players the bonus for the win over Burundi three days ago as well as plan for subsequent games.”

Akinwunmi added that on Monday, 24th June, the NFF had transferred to the players and their officials their camp allowances up to the last day of the group phase matches at the AFCON 2019, as well as the appearance fee for the friendly against Zimbabwe in Asaba on 8th June.

“We have paid these monies through our funds managers, Financial Derivatives Company on Monday, 24th June 2019. The only issue we had was that some of the players did not send their bank accounts and instead authorized the bank to pay their monies to some other individuals. The bank requested clear authorization for this to happen.

“I was on a telephone discussion with the Captain of the team Mikel Obi this morning and can safely say that all clarifications have been made and the usual cordial relationship and understanding between the players and we the administrators is still intact.

I have challenged them to go all out and win the trophy assuring them that their monies all the way to the final is guaranteed. It is now for the players to focus on the championship and deliver glory to the nation. I have no doubt of their ability to do that.”

Akinwunmi also specially commended the maturity of the team and its leaders, including skipper Mikel John Obi and for their unflinching focus on the job at hand which is winning the AFCON Trophy.

2019 AFCON WATCH:
Amuneke: Tanzania Still In Race For AFCON 2019 Round Of 16 Spot

Tanzania coach Emmanuel Amuneke has played down the East African’s defeat to Senegal in their first Group C match of 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt, informing Completesports.com that despite the setback, his charges are still in strong contention for one of the qualification tickets in the group.

Amuneke will lead the Taifa Stars out on Thursday at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo against East African rivals, Kenya, at 9pm Nigerian time.

Senegal and Algeria are also billed to cross each other’s path earlier same day and venue, but at 6pm, Nigerian time.

Amuneke reckons that his players have put behind the disappointment of their defeat to the Terranga Lions and are now poised to give their all in the remaining two group games starting with Thursday’s crunchy clash against The Harambee Stars.

“We are not talking about the past (loss to Senegal),” the former African Footballer of the Year (1995) told Completesports.com in and exclusive chat.

“We can’t reverse any thing, we have to think and plan for the future.

“Our objectives for coming here is to do well, and irrespective of what happened in the match, I think we still have opportunity to make up with the remaining games and move to the next stage. That’s our objective.

“As human beings, we will do our best, and God who knows where we will reach even before coming here will take care of the rest,” the former Nigeria U17s coach who won the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile stated.

forgiveness:

I expect us to win the game because I think we are more tactical.

I did watched the Guinea vs Madagascar match the first 15minutes.

I noticed that the Guineans start their build up at the back and are slow at it.

If our forwards can put pressure on them (press), they will not be comfortable.

Keshi used this tactics against the Malians in 2013 and the game ended 4:1 in our favour.

2019 AFCON: What we must do to beat Nigeria – Guinea coach, Paul Put

Guinea coach, Paul Put, has said that his team must be “bigger” to beat the Super Eagles in their second Group B game at the African Cup of Nations on Wednesday.

The Syli Star must avoid defeat from Nigeria in order to brighten their chances of advancing to the last 16 in Egypt.

Paul Put’s men drew 2-2 in their opener against Madagascar on Saturday.

However, Put is aiming to get their campaign back on track against Nigeria.

”I know I have a big game to play on Wednesday against Nigeria. Today the group that did not start the match against Madagascar trained and the other group worked in the massage room,” Put told Guineefoot.info.

”Nigeria is a great team, and it’s up to us to be bigger.”
Nigeria and Guinea have met 17 times in the past, with the Super Eagles winning five, drawing seven and losing five.

This, I can't argue. I heard people scream offside before the corner. But replay was never shown, so I don't know

Go back and watch the match please
