Here's a section culled from 234Next http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/Metro/Health/5640396-146/story.csp Insufficient doctors Lagos State has about 1100 doctors, working across 24 general hospitals, 276 primary healthcare clinics and a teaching hospital; whereas the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, a federal hospital in the state, has about 900 doctors. And this staff shortage may continue to play an integral role in the state health sector. However, the state government has continued to expand and increase the number of health facilities in the state, to cater for the state’s teeming population, estimated at 18 million, without a relative increase of staff work force. Mr Idris said the state government’s priority in the sector was “free health mission, revamping the primary healthcare, health insurance and infrastructure renewal.” “We are doing all these now, especially infrastructure, which is a one-off thing; after that, staff welfare will take centre stage,” he said. Taofeek Majolagbe, the Lagos Medical Guild Vice President, confirmed the workload on state doctors, saying a doctor attends “to an average of 60 to 70 patients every day, and we are that few in state hospitals because doctors don’t want to stay.” Another doctor, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, noted that the heavy workload also affects their ability to prepare well for periodic professional medical examinations, which their colleagues doing lesser amount of work pass more easily. “You are failing your examinations because you are too overworked to prepare well, you are frustrated; you are over-worked, you are frustrated; and you are earning pittance, you are frustrated, so it’s triple jeopardy for doctors here,” he said. “Don’t try to deceive people with fine buildings where there will be long queues of patients. It’s easier for the government to give contracts out to their cronies and friends than to increase workers’ salaries because the increment goes into the pockets of the workers and not to their cronies.” |
DeLaRue:Stop speaking authoritatively on matters you know little about. It's pathetic. No one asked to 'put Doctors on a pay pedestal'. Even a child can understand that what my post implied was that Doctors should be rewarded commensurately with the service they provide. Their profession is a highly specialized one that requires years of dedication to get into. Why then should they be made into martyrs for the rest of us? If you equate paying Doctors a fair amount is 'putting them on a pay pedestal', then you need to have a rethink. Secondly, the doctors were not given a pay increase. Their salaries were moved up to 75% of the CONMES (Consolidated Medical Salary Structure) . As someone succintly put it on the 234Next forum, if a doctor was earning N6 and the CONMES salary was N10, moving to 75% of the CONMES means a salary of N7.5. The 75% increase smokescreen is just a cheap attempt by the lagos state government to swing over illiterate people to their side. Pity you're falling for this. DeLaRue:You agree? Who are you? No offense, but we'd much rather the Government agreed on this. And have you ever seen the Government on it own approve such an increase in yearly pay for any sector? So how do you make the Government agree to such a pay increase structure if not by going on strike? Prayers, perhaps? Or fasting? Look, this is a simple give and take world. You provide a service and are paid for it. If the pay is not enough, then you withhold your service! |
violent:Yes! they want more money! They want to be able to pay their house rents, to be able to send their kids to good schools. They want to be comfortable. And you know what? After they've spent over 7 years training to be doctors, after immersing themselves in blood and gore all in the name of medicine, after living through the trauma of seeing patients die on their hands until they become jaded, i'd say they deserve every damn penny of what they are asking for. I have never seen nor heard of any Lagos landlord that reduced his house rent for a client as soon as the client indicated he was a medical doctor. violent:No. Lagosians should have risen to challenge the indifference of their elected Governor to the plight of the common man suffering from the strike. Three months! And you people keep on licking Fashola's rump! Pathetic. Lagosians could troop to the State House in their thousands, yet they stand aside while the Governor did nothing to end the strike. violent:The bolded figure is similar to one of their demands. Naturally, your Governor ignored them. They did not wake up one day and demand for more money. They pressed for concrete steps to close the gap between what they earn and what their counterparts in the federal government employ earn. violent:To ensure fair treatment, i'd much rather these people use strikes as a weapon than have it all end in the bloody revolution this country needs to become more fair to the civil service and the suffering masses. It is the duty of the Government to enter spirited negotiation and dialogue to head off these strikes before they happen. |
Even tho I understand the grief that these doctors go through with the low wages, late payment and lack of modernized technologies in their facilities, I still believe that their strike was jut selfish and thoughtless. These doctors have been on strike for months [3, I think]. What effect has their strike had on their patients? Are the nurses with limited medical knowledge seeing to their patients? This is past ridiculous. Why don't they make it illegal for public employees like school faculties teachers, doctors, etc to strike? Strike is going to continue nevertheless, no matter the agreement or compromise. Until they make it illegal, strike will continue to be a powerful tools. That's why you have 4yrs schooling degree elongating to 7yrs schooling. Ridiculous.
Now you're thinking like a child. Strike should be the last resort for those in such sensitive professions, but it is the ONLY weapon in their arsenal. We live under a Government that is insensitive to the needs of the populace. The only way to make these pampered clowns see reason is to employ Industrial action judiciously. I don't give a damn about the elongation of academic tenures as a result of university strikes. The students and parents of the students are partly to blame that sorry situation. If they paid more attention to the quality of education they were paying for, they should be the ones on the front lines, not even the lecturers. 70% of the time, strikes in the University community comes about when the government reneges on agreements it has entered with lecturers and doctors. Instead of blaming these people, look no further than the Government. It's also amusing that you freely condemn the lecturers. The strike lasted 3 months not because the doctors wanted to stay at home, but because that overhyped Fashola failed to do anything about it! Is there any indication that agreeing to their demands would bring the state to penury? No! Blame all those dead people on Fashola and his advisers. But you people love your god-king-messiah Governor so much that you'd lie to yourself. I wonder, if you were a landlord, would you reduce the rent for Doctors because 'their reward is in heaven'? |
Ibime:Instant Kill!! ![]() Superego, please pay him his money ASAP. |
viperman:When next i visit Lagos, i will be sure to add you to my growing list of PES slaves ![]() |
Bawss1:Yep! Naruto rocks, can't wait for thursday to roll over so i can grab the latest manga. |
iambaker:This is the 'technology market' section. If you aren't buying or selling, you're spamming. PS: Your list sucks. |
Ironic how someone can claim to be fighting against the Government by killing, raping and kidnapping the masses he claims to represent. Hopefully this fellow and his sympathizers will be caught and made to face the firing squad ASAP. |
The Admiral should be ashamed of himself, calling these fellows 'millitants'. People who were not even carrying arms sef don turn to millitant. |

isuomo:We're talking about Doctors working for the State Government, not the federal Government. isuomo:Do you know how long it takes to become a consultant, let alone a senior consultant. Abeg go siddon jare. It's fair when Fashola spends hundreds of millions in dubious and overhyped projects, yet unfair when Doctors demand payment commensurate with their hard work, level of education and work place hazards and trauma. isuomo:Newsflash! Of course the money has to play a big part in their decision to work. What will they use to pay their landlords? What will they use to feed their kids? How are they supposed to afford quality education and decent standard of living for their families? Some of you are saying that if Fashola agrees to their demands, it may lead to others demanding for change. So what? Since when did that become a bad thing? The Nigerian Government at all levels is perfectly happy to suppress the masses while enriching the leaders. if more and more people take matters into their own hands, all it will lead to is more benefit for our democracy. I shudder to think that you people feel that is a bad thing. In any decent democratic setting, Fashola would pay a heavy price for his silliness in the 2011 election. But with sheep like you to keep praising your god-messiah-Governor, he will remain insensitive to the plight of the common man. Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor. i'm just someone who believes in justice. If you want to hold the Doctors accountable for their oaths, hold Fashola accountable for his oath too! |
See all the overwhelming evidence against Ibori, yet that overhyped fellow Nuhu Ribadu could do nothing. And to think this Ribadu wants to run for President on the back of being an 'anti-corruption czar'. Rubbish. |
If it's unlocked, 115K. Let me know if you're game. |
kosovo:The word 'console' modifies the word 'exclusive'. I know where this is going, i thought you'd given up trolling? ![]() |
Gamine:You've kept at this for far longer than i thought you would. That's a good thing in my books. With luck you'll marry a strapping Uneme lad and produce 5 Uneme kids who will jabber all day in the Uneme Language ![]() |
appletango:Yes, because votes weren't counted in Edo, Ondo and Ekiti states where the people's will voted out the incumbent PDP. if you don't wanna vote, then be quiet. Lots of us will vote in 2011 and stay back to ensure our votes are counted. RSVP! |
udezue:Jeez, how daft can you be? The winners are announced with much fanfare. It's really distasteful that you can use such words like 'damn' when referring to this couple, even after you know that 1. They're old 2. The wife is battling cancer 3. They're giving away a huge chunk of the money to charities to help others. |
hercules07:Make that more like 100K entry level. And after 7-8 years of intense study and training in a highly specialized career, that ain't enough. The money is available, let Fashola chop less and spend less on projects of dubious value. This messiah-Governor's arrogance and insensitivity is the only thing prolonging the strike. |
malone5923:Nice one! What payload are you using on your iPod? PL3 or Hermes 4b? |
Veteran or not, Onyeka Onwenu came across as something of a pompous twit. What's with all the blathering on and on about people trying to 'pull women down'? The excerpt of her conversation with Azuka even supports my point. You call someone up who doesn't know you, the person has a right to ask, nay DEMAND, how you got the number. And that isn't rude. |
ayaba:The Iphone u want how many gig do u need, there is 8gig, 16gig, and 32gigThere is no 8GB iPhone 4. So much for your credibility. |
Brisingr:And Fashola also swore to safeguard the lives of Lagosians when he was being sworn in. What's your point? |
seunbanme:And you've just lost money for yourself and your family members. Good job! |
malone5923:To be honest, I didn't put the original hard disk in the enclosure. But im pretty sure you'll be able to reformat it back to FAT 32 and use with your Wii |
malone5923:Yeah, pry open the external drive you bought and remove the hard disk. You can easily then remove the existing SATA hard disk from the ps3 and swap it with the new 500gb. The ps3 will then format it. IMPORTANT Use a flash drive to back up your PS3 so you don't lose your save games. |
I still have no idea why people are buying that overpriced piece of crap that is the Torch 9800. Vote with your dollars and stay away from that crap until RIM gets the message. Please return that 9800 and get a bold 9700. It's cheaper and better. That is all. |
Saecula:Give it a rest, willya? Also, these girls aren't any more bare than many of our maidens during their cultural festivals. If you have an issue with it, don't look. |
malone5923:Nice one. Just get a screwdriver, take out that old 40GB and swap it out for a decent sized one (320GB - 500 GB) LG shops in Nigeria sell 500 GB for 12600. That was the cheapest i could find, i grabbed one and did the swap ![]() |
fyneguy:By all means, set what trap you had in mind. Let's hope it's more sophisticated than this obvious scam you're fronting for. |
fyneguy:lol. You can 'suspect' me to be anything. But we all know you to be an unrepentant conman. Those documents you placed there are so obviously faked. You have to know that. Ergo, you're a thief. But why don't you go report this Mobil payment to CNN via iReport? I'm pretty sure you can also make some money from exclusive interviews ![]() |
