Crime / CEO Of Gokada, Fahim Saleh Found Dead And Dismembered In His New York City Apart by thatareaguy: 9:56am On Jul 15, 2020
Tech entrepreneur Fahim Saleh, who is the CEO of former bike-hailing app Gokada, was on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, found dead and dismembered in his New York apartment.

Saleh’s body was found headless and dismembered inside his luxury Lower East Side apartment which he bought in 2019.

The body of the 33-year-old was discovered by his sister who became worried after not hearing from him in a day.

Fahim Saleh bought the apartment in 2019 and often showed it off on his Instagram (Instagram/Fahim Saleh)

She visited and found him headless while his body had been cut up and sorted into different plastic bags. A power saw which was still plugged in was also found in the apartment.

According to several reports, police believe they have surveillance footage of the suspect entering the building and then using the elevator.

The footage is said to show the suspect in a glove and a mask covering his face sharing the elevator with Saleh up to the seventh floor.

As the door of the elevator opened directly into Saleh’s apartment, he was seen to fall to the floor immediately from a possible gunshot.

Police, reports say, believe the murder was carried out by a professional because of how the attack happened.

"We have a torso, a head that's been removed, arms, and legs. Everything is still on the scene. We don't have a motive," New York Police Department spokesman Sgt. Carlos Nieves said.

Fahim Saleh founded Gokada on his adventure in Lagos, Nigeria (Instagram/Fahim Saleh)

Saleh is well known in Lagos, Nigeria where he helped launch Gokada, the former bike hailing company that has turned into delivery services following the government's ban on passenger motorcycles.

Before his investment in Nigeria, he had found success with a logistic company called Pathao in Bangladesh.

Just like Gokada, Pathao also started as a bike hailing service before it pivoted into a logistic company.

It was with his experience with Pathao in Bangladesh that Saleh went on the bike hailing adventure in Nigeria called Gokada.

“I had some money so I decided to go to Nigeria and try it out,” he once told Tech Cabal.

“I wanted to see if there was a future in motorcycle ride-sharing transport in Lagos.”

Gokada was a success in the early stages. The company raised $10.6 million in funding after four rounds and was on track to break even by January 2020 before the government ban.

Following an attempt to appeal to the government about the ban, Saleh was criticised for the way he portrayed his bikers in a video.

His murder has dominated the news cycle in New York City. ‘CUT-UP BODY FOUND IN $2M APT’ the New York Daily News splashed on their front cover of Wednesday, July, 15.

Fahim Saleh's murder is on the front cover of New York Daily News (Daily News)

According to several reports, he had last been seen on Monday afternoon walking into his building's elevator. The New York Times reported that there was little blood found on the scene of the murder as some effort had been made to clear up the evidence.

We thank God for this good news.

However, Andrew Young should note that such perpetual complains are always coming from just a greedy section who are never satisfied with their fair share. They have been complaining right from time immemorial because they prefer to get more than their fair share

Example, Nigeria is blessed with crude oil, but they are bitterly angry that other sections of the country benefit from same oil as much as them, even though they have none while sections where this oil is deposited don't even make noise.

Even this good news, they must complain about it, it is in their gene to always complain.

funny but read about kotlin... you will be surprised to see that kotlin is like a Java framework.
How is it like a framework? I use Kotlin .... was initially hesitant on learning it since Java was okay for me (for the Android dev). Much more productive with the language.
Usually, the problem with new languages is that they usually don't have a lot of libraries/tools built around them. Kotlin is different thought. It's 100% interoperable with Java (so u can use any Java library u want). It could also be compiled to native code; could be transpiled to javascript (hence u can write frontend code in it); is not verbose like java; .... there is no reason for a newbie to learn java .....
Programming / Re: Java Has Been Over Throned By Python by thatareaguy: 2:40pm On Aug 13, 2019
Daejoyoung:
Java has its use in Android development, and python is not popular for that, so all programming languages have their uses.
Most of the time, it really isn't about the language but about what you want to do, and then you learn the framework involved for that thing which could be tougher than its parent language.
Java is popular in enterprise and not going away anytime soon.
Heck even fortran is still alive, and still being used heavily.

Kotlin is eating Java's lunch. It's gonna be dead someday. It failed to evolve quickly enough to meet programmers' needs. Kotlin is now Android default (recommended) language. Even popular frameworks like Spring have taken note f it's presence. With stuff like extension functions, better functional programming support, object properties, it's only a matter of few years before Java joins Cobol and fortran as part of programming language history.

The truth is that a single broomstick does nothing to HEAP OF MESS compared to a broom of thousand sticks banded together.

The problem with Yele Sowore is his feeling of SUPERIORITY COMPLEX. His leadership of University of Lagos Student Union is still in his head. He looks down on other social activists. It is either he captains ship and navigates it with his MYOPIC compass or he leaves the ship. That is exactly what played out in build up to 2019 presidential election. He rushed quite early in the day to register his own PERSONAL political party where he would call the shots with handful of young admirers offering him their adoration and worship. This singular action killed the momentum that was already building for emergence of a younger cerebral president.

The reality is if people like SELFISH YELE SOWORE can put aside his ego and humbly work with others by applying sacrifice and patriotism to paint a bigger picture rather focus on building personal resume, the much sought but currently elusive NEW POLITICAL ORDER will become a reality. It is not late to start NOW to strategize for 2023. The young people of this country have the numbers, the spread and the media to mobilise themselves to ADOPT and VOTE for a CAPABLE candidate and then follow it up immediately with total OCCUPY PROTEST if the election is rigged.

It is important to note that an acceptable candidate MUST NOT be young and under 40. A 50-ish successful professional or entrepreneur with required knowledge, intellectual capacity and contemporary mindset should be the target. A TEAM BUILDER who understands the PROBLEMS and offers practical SOLUTION IDEAS and is open to ideas of others.

Politics / What Does Nigeria Do For Its Citizens? by thatareaguy: 9:42am On May 02, 2019
Nigerians dig their own boreholes. Almost every house in Nigeria has its own private source of water. You are your own water corporation. Some people in this generation have never seen pipe-borne water.

You hire your own security guards — your estate or community hires one and because you don’t really trust that communal effort, you still hire a private guard for your house. Police? Don’t even start. You are your own police.

When you’re on the road, you’re at the mercy of “agberos”, touts and kidnappers. So, you hire a bodyguard. If you can’t afford a bodyguard, you depend on God.

You get your own generator because there’s no power. Sometimes, you get one for the home and another for the office. If there are 10 offices in an office complex, that’s 10 generators. You are your own power holding company.

You buy and install electric poles on your street. You pay to buy all the cables and you even buy transformer. You are your own power distributor.

You contribute money to grade the road on your street or put interlock pavestones. The communal efforts take a long time but you can’t afford to allow floods destroy your house. You are your own ministry of works.

You fall sick but you can’t even afford to go to the hospital. Every Nigerian knows when you’re ill; it’s either malaria or typhoid. You’re your own doctor so you know what to prescribe for yourself. “Where There Is No Doctor” must have been written with Nigeria in mind. For many, it’s either they depend on faith healing or gofundme. Otherwise, you buy your own gloves, needles, look for blood donors, etc in a hospital. You even have to beg for bed space. God help you if you’re a burn victim. You may have to drive yourself and other victims to the hospital. No ambulance to assist you. Safer to have soft drinks poured over your head since you really don’t have too many options.

Education is substandard so after school hours, you must still hire teachers who will attempt to teach what was taught earlier. Meanwhile, you buy packets of chalk for the public school your child attends. You bought the chair and desk they sit on. Parents through the PTA contributed money to paint the classrooms and even hire teachers. The school belongs to government but in reality, you run it.

You’ve been looking for employment to no avail so you get to a time that you have to sit down, think and then employ yourself. You are now CEO.

So, what exactly does the government do for its citizens in Nigeria?

I recently watched Kabusa Oriental Choir’s latest video on Instagram. Their remake of Rihanna’s ‘Under my umbrella’ is a massive hit already with almost 80,000 views in one hour of posting. And Don Jazzy featured on the video. I always look forward to their weekly release — with their choral robes and Catholic-music inspired pieces. Those guys turn any song they handle into amazing parodies. Very soon, companies will swarm on them looking for endorsements. They will be featured in movies and comedy shows. Don Jazzy might even sign them on.

Kabusa is just one example of how Nigerians are looking inwards and leveraging social media to survive. In the absence of government, Nigerians have become the most creative beings on planet earth. I don’t think this should be subject to debate. Everywhere you turn on the gram, you’ll be amazed at the depth of creativity you see. Just look at Woli Arole — his one-minute skits have turned him into a celebrity and now he is riding on that to produce his own movies. MC Lively also known as Barrister Mike’s weekends are now so busy with bookings for shows and he started from his ‘waka-about’ skits wearing a red tie.

Time will fail me to talk about dance specialists like Sydney Talker and Harbie or entertainment blogs such as instablog9ja, tundeednut and krakstv among others. There are thousands of Nigerians who sell wigs, clothes, shoes and other items including services on social media and avoid the prohibitive setting up costs. My wife once ordered a beautiful dress for our daughter from someone on Instagram. It was delivered right to our doorsteps in a very attractive wrapper and she paid on delivery. The seller operates from home. My wife has since recommended her to many others.

One can’t quantify how social media stepped in where government failed. Only heaven knows how many jobs have been created via social media. Since we don’t have reliable statistics, we can’t quantify the volume of transactions consummated daily via social media nor the amount of money that is exchanged. Social media economy is the new economy for most Nigerians. It’s paying school fees and feeding families. Social media may actually be the largest employer in Nigeria.

In a thinking nation, we should be thinking of a Minister for Social Media and reclassify some portfolios like Minister for Water Resources. In Nigeria, this is not likely going to happen any time soon.

Bro,I'm telling you pop and plain, if tecno and infinix dare make the quality of phones samsung are making, they would not sell them at less than 500k. A company that makes low end phones using Mtk processors will continue making it look like they are doing you a favour because Nigerians always take things hook, line and sinker. They hide under the cover of making huge megapixel cameras when in actual fact, it is not the number of megapixels that determine how good a photo will turn out to be.

If you want to make good phones at low prices, India is your biggest market. Why is tecno and infinix not in India
Made some valid points.

Obviously, there's rarely any company that is out there to "help" the consumer. Transsion made moves that few companies would make - targetting a low-income earning African audience. How many manufacturers are willing to "dilute" their brand in the name of competing at the low end? Now that they have helped developed the smartphone market in Nigeria, others like Xiaomi are thinking of coming in. Competition is good, and will definitely be beneficial to consumers. I was only tackling the OP; because I thought the manner in which he described their (Transsion) phones and the company itself was unfair.

The company I'd like to see enter Nigeria is even OnePlus.

* 9-month full stack boot camp with no tuition. See the curriculum here.
* At the end of programme, you could be hired by Paystack.
* You'd have to pay a portion of your salary if you get a job after the programme. Otherwise (if you don't find a job or can't reach the minimum income level), you don't have to pay anything.

Why Paystack x Lambda?

Paystack and Lambda share a lot in common. We're both alumni of the Y Combinator Accelerator and we both raised funding from Stripe, the payments giant whose mission is to increase the GDP of the internet.

Most importantly, both Paystack and Lambda School are obsessed with figuring out how to give everyone the tools they need to build their dreams. While Lambda does this by removing barriers to a career-changing education, Paystack does this by providing growth and payments tools to help businesses in Africa scale. Although we come at it from different directions, we're united in our desire to amplify human potential, and we're excited to join forces to work together to do exactly that.

You are free to hate but what u r saying is not true.

Competing at the low end of the market is not a bad thing. They are smart for considering an emerging market. It has it challenges but if they continue to hold on, they'll reap rewards of first mover advantage. I don't know why u r trying to make it sound bad. What regulation are they breaking? Any sources? Prior to 2015 I used to use Tecno - Tecno F7 (Phantom A+). Even then it wasn't as bad as u r describing.

If Transsion Holdings wants to make Samsung esque phones, they would. But by doing so, the phones would become expensive. Even the Xiaomi u mentioned are just blatant copy cats. What makes u think Transsion can't do that? China has mastered the craft of copying.

1. Those phones aren't decent. They are useless pieces of crap which no regulatory body had certified Okay.

2. Those phones are made in China but dare not be sold in China. They would be prosecuted for breach in standardisation laws.

3. Tecno, Infinix and Itel as well as their substandard products aren't doing Nigerians a favour, we are rather victims of their greed.

What is stopping Tecno from offering us what xiaomi offers even if it's slightly higher?

Over the next few weeks, I'll be buying some Xiaomi products and sending to my folks. Those using Tecno would see it and cry.

1. Can u name some of the standardization laws they broke? Any sources?
You made a point that is similar to this: "Jumia's founders are from Europe, they dare not operate in Europe. They would be persecuted for breaching standardisation laws."

2. Finding it difficult to comprehend the hate. Apparently, they are "targeting" Africans to exploit them?? Nigerians are victims of Transsion's greed? Lmao. Without those phones, how many people would be using a smartphone?

Now all these crap some say only meant for Nigeria and Africa called tecno, itel and infinix mtcheew... well i keep telling them, put tecno and infinix in Europe and USA lets see how good their market performance will be, at least everyone knows Nigeria is a dumping ground and thats what tecno and infinix are enjoying. The compang that makes both tecno and infinix, Transsion Holdings, operate mainly in Africa. It is a deliberate decision - to sell decent smartphones at affordable prices to Africans. To say that they see Nigeria and the rest of Africa as a dumping ground is rather unfair.
