naijaboyof4life: the match is the US not Mexico.I guess you do not know that Mexico right across the border from Texas. Plus, Texas was once a part of Mexico as well. |
I still have not seen anyone provide an author who should be given the title, "Father of Modern African Literature." Chinua Achebe novels will still be taught as a necessary reading all across the world, just like Shakespeare and Mark Twain. And that is why he was given the title, "Father of Modern African Literature.' One of the first novels to be from an African perspective. |
Ola Johnson: I've been observing you for sometimes now, you call yourself Bookworm, but you don't know anything. Leopold Senghor, even before he got into the politics of Senegal had been a poet, who together with two other Carribbeans, Aimé Césaire (I've forgotten the name of the other) formed the Negritude Movement in Paris. At a time Wole Soyinka nominated Aimé Césaire for the Nobel Laureate.I already mentioned the other Negritude founders if you just look above your post. And yes, I am a bookworm or bibliophile. No one is taking anything away from Leopold Senghor. But he was an independence leader first and foremost. |
There should be many Nigerians watching the game in Houston, since there are so many of them who reside in that city. As they say, Houston is to the Igbos, like London is to the Yorubas. |
rhymz: You are the Fool here, you brainless Bimbo that thinks she's got it all figured out. Senghor was no doubt a notable figure more because of his political career than his contribution to African Literature. Till this day, there is still controversy about whether he met the standard of contributing "a lifetime record of outstanding scholarship in African studies and service to the Africanist community"Let us not forget that many Africanist think of him as a "peau noire, masques blancs." His second wife was a French woman... ![]() |
CAMEROONPRIDE: Was CA the first African writer? Was he the first novelist?Did I not address the questions you posed? Being the first means nothing, when it comes to literature. It is about the widespread acclaim. And before you say I know nothing about Leopold Senghor, you better think again, because I know all about Negritude, which includes authors like Aime Cesaire and Leon Damas from the Caribbean. |
I am still waiting for the day when these countries will legalize polygamy. |
And I still see this as a problem. There needs to be a healthy debate about this issue. |
Why do so many Nigerians bleach? This is becoming an epidemic. Look at how two-tone she is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTNuwV7NFHM |
CAMEROONPRIDE: Your point is?I am not taking anything away from the great Leopold Senghor. Nor am I the one who gave Chinua Achebe the title, "Father of Modern African Literature." Other people did and to be honest, and there is nothing that you nor I can do about it. And being first means nothing. Mark Twain is known as the "Father of American Literature," but he was not the first American author. |
CAMEROONPRIDE: Leopold sedar Senghor need I say more?Leopold Senghor will always be known as an independence leader first and foremost and not as a poet. Being the first president of Senegal is an achievement in itself. |
CAMEROONPRIDE: Would you deny that modern African literature was known and used/read all over the world before Achebe? Can you please name a modern African author whose literature has been used/read all over the world before Achebe? I can wait for your answer. No one gives themselves the title, "Father of..." anything. That title is bestowed on an individual by another person, and soon other people come to agree with the sentiment. No need to get upset, that someone has given him that title that he rightfully deserve. Just celebrate his achievements. |
Congratulations to these future Einsteins. |
Maybe you all should not blame the governor, and place the blame on the contractor who took his money and gave him a subpar structure. |
CAMEROONPRIDE: you are not making any sense, I'm asking her definition because I don't want to show people who started writing before achebe and achieved more for her to come and say they are not into modern literature, also let's not forget that literature is not only about novels ...I rest my case. There is no clear definition. It is just a title that is given to those who have made a tremendous impact in a field. Would you deny that Chinua Achebe did not bring recognition and prestige to modern African literature? I think we both know the answer to that question. |
payless: Delhi Metro train, IndiaHow long did it take you to find that picture? It is funny how some of you are expecting to see a Ferrari, when you can only afford an Impala. ![]() |
payless: Most trains in India are modern. Google trains in India and see for yourself. When you deserve bread, you don't settle for crumbs.I do not think you know what you are talking about. These are some examples of trains in India. https://www.travelwireasia.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IndiaTrain.jpg https://www.unodc.org/images/southasia//Stories/2010/indian-trains.jpg https://resources0.news.com.au/images/2010/11/05/1225948/393144-indian-train.jpg |
It is better than having nothing. The first step is to get functional trains on functional train tracks. After that, then you can think about modernizing the trains. Remember Rome was not built in a day. These trains are similar to the ones found in India, which has connected many regions from Northern India to Southern India. And those trains have been a boon to their economy. |
Do my eyes deceive me? Did I just see a drive-thru KFC? When Lagos gets a McDonalds, you will know that the city has arrived. ![]() |
Quick question for Eko Ile. Do you know if the current administration in Lagos has any plans of attracting investment/tourism from the Black Diaspora? Ghana does a lot in attracting tourism from African Americans. What about Lagos? I am sure many African Americans, Caribbeans and Afro-Brazilians would love to visit Lagos to trace our roots. |
Desola: *rolling eyes*I think you believe that being Modern is synonymous with being Western. The words are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same. Development in Lagos can have African characteristics, just like development in Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong and Singapore had Asian characteristics. Africans are becoming urbanized, just like the rest of the world. |
These pictures are simply amazing! Lagos has a chance to become an international city just like Hong Kong, Dubai, London and New York City where all nationalities are welcomed. Eko o ni baje o! |
Religion is the opiate of the masses. The sooner people get rid of superstitious belief, the better. |
It seems like a lot of Nigerians are suffering from outright shock that those two demented souls are not from the normal groups that we associate with terrorism, but are of Yoruba stock. A people who often have family members who follow Christianity or Islam in the same household. I wonder if the two individuals were Hausa, would some Nigerians be having this discussion? But the fact still remains that both of these animals are of Nigerian descent and it is time that Nigerians come to terms with that information instead of believing conspiracy theories. |
I see some people are still denying that those two demented souls are Nigerians. Both of their surnames are definitely Yoruba. And last time I checked, the Yoruba are a part of Nigeria. So to all those who are denying that they are Nigerian, just stop living in denial. |
What I can't understand is why do these religious extremist stay in countries that they hate? Maybe they should move to Saudi Arabia, Yemen or Pakistan instead of coming to nations that value secularism. There they can have their sharia while people who want to live in the modern age can live in peace. |
9jadelta: then the problem must be comprehensionWell by writing this reply, it seems like I am comprehending what you wrote as well. Don't you agree? ![]() |
9jadelta: do you know how to read?Yes I do. Thank you for asking. ![]() |
I think the UK has been far too tolerant of these people. They need to lock up all these radical Imams and religious fanatics who preach hate and should deport any person who does not support secularism. |
Both individuals still have brought shame to Nigerians everywhere. |
PAGAN 9JA why wont you shut up?!? You are arguing and posting pictures that have nothing to do with the topic of the thread. |
It is good to see both of these men wearing traditional clothing in honor of a man who has given so much to Africa through his novel, Things Fall Apart. |
