Of course trading makes more money than actual producers. The price a farmer sells his basket of tomatoes in faraway North is probably the same price of a few kgs in Shoprite.
If production was easy we would have many oil maguls building refineries, not importing products and collecting subsidies.

If you have funds today you can start trading immediately whereas for production, you would have to tie money down building your factory.

So yes I know the advantages of trading
Na sooo... cool

Very few Nigerians can really do business if you ask me. Those who succeed immediately go into preservation mode which is why we have SUKUK, TB and Bonds oversubscribed.
Then there is also the safe haven of real estate, but when it comes to real production (not trading), only the very brave Nigerians are bold enough to try which is the void that Indians and Lebanese come to fill.
Well, trading is very good if you know the business well.
They own the markets and dictate to manufacturers most of the time, unless a smarter and very rich manufacturer comes into play and change the music for them.
Na traders dey determine whether your product will sell or not and are most times richer than you.
So be careful before you try to talk them down.
Diageo and pernod-ricard are both trading companies that went on acquiring spree buying out their manufacturers and turn them to boy-boy! angry

I trade occasionally

It's not as easy as you paint it

But thank u for the advice
Well yeah, trading is very hard and you have to be updated to always be ahead of your competitors.
It's a long term business, something you must commit 10 years plus to succeed.
I did not say it was easy, but it's worth it in the long run if you care.

That's why I mentioned essentials
Which you have listed some

But like I said

That space is crowded
Do your own and grow, crowd wouldn't matter if you know what you are doing.
Trading Business is very simple;
1)Identify good product that can sell.
2) Go to the overall source and buy.
3)Get better position to establish and be committed to it.
4)Sell good price.
If you have these, you must grow.
You don't just jump and start manufacturing, you must start from trading so you will know what has demand enough to be produced or not.

The purchasing power of most Nigerians have been decimated, so who will then buy

Those are everyday products.

Yes, bonds are a safe haven. I chose to see it as Treasury Bills with a longer tenure.

If we can trust the government to return our capital after 90, 180, or 360 days, why can't we trust them with 7years given that most of us usually roll over our Treasury Bills investment during the good days?
A lot can happen in 7 years if you ask me,but then...
Risk appetite differs and I understand that.

There is a reason why fund managers that have spent years studying the markets and long hours writing Python scripts charge commision on capital, and not on the profit.

Are you saying an average guy on Nairaland has more resources or information than a Wall Street fund manager? And if those fund managers cannot even guarantee investment safety, why do we worry so much about the most minimal of things?

I once saw someone on this platform say Dangote was wrong to have invested in the refinery business. Sincerely, if anyone knows better (in risk assessment), you would sure be richer consulting for asset management firms than being here on a faceless forum.

Every investment has a risk/reward component and everyone is urged to do their due diligence but when you actually engage in analysis paralysis and taking things to the extremely unlikely cases, then you will end up not doing anything because apart from you dying the next day, there is also the probability that the world itself can end anytime. grin
A lot of people think bonds are safe havens.
That is what ahiboilandgas is trying to re-orientate.
You have to watch like a hawk so that at the sight of bad news, you cut your losses and regain your capital.
Not that people shouldn't invest because of risks.
No one said that.

1. If you didn’t know there would be future production cuts, then you have not been following these things long enough. Note that in that period, there wasn’t even a production cut, it was just no sales! Worse than a production cut could ever be. So what is your point?

2. Also wrong sir. Go and check the historical charts of the external reserve and see how sharp it went down. Hovered around this? Lol! Bros! I am beginning to believe what those guys meant about your points days back.

3. I am not talking about oil. I was talking about Dollar to naira rates. In which due to the fact that oil had not been sold for a long time, would affect it and due to the fact as with number 1 above - production cuts! Like I said, if you have been following these things for a while you will understand.

4. Hahahahaha. If you don’t know why the Nigerian government decided to borrow money instead of spending down to that Number, bros... then there is still a lot more you need to understand.

You say luck? grin grin grin grin grin

I am not the bragging type, but my buying power says otherwise.
1)Every oil price case is different from the other,
How would you know there would be production cuts when the 2 biggest players in OPEC were at war with each other? How would you know when they will come to a truce, that is if they ever will?
This is what started the downtrend of oil,not coronavirus.
"No sales" was temporary, everyone knows this as there isn't a replacement for oil yet,so no sales don't matter.
2)Do we have different charts on reserves?I am looking at one now and there is a serious hovering between the $33-45B range in times of normalcy.
3)You can't talk about dollar to naira rates and not talk about its major determinant which is oil for now.
Production cuts were uncertain since the tension between Saudi and Russia.
If not for coronavirus which forced them to a truce, the price war would probably still be on till now and no production cuts would be made.
Meaning Lesser problem for Nigeria and more naira defence strength.
4)Government has been borrowing even in the times of Nigeria prosperity,so how does this point to the fact that CBN was helpless so much that it had to borrow.
Have you seen some of the capital projects Nigeria is embarking on?
Why won't they borrow?
No one is bragging,we are discussing if you ask me.

Won’t the money come through banks?

Was it not still you talking about how people couldn’t withdraw certain amount of FX the other day?

And government has not even started defaulting yet. grin grin grin

Not all export deals are based on third party assurances such as LC.
Some are one man,one buyer deals.
So how do you stop wire-wire from happening in this case where no Nigerian bank will smell the money except black market naira deposit suddenly maneuvered into Nigeria without going through any legal banking method? undecided
2)Not all export deals are structured, what if the goods is going to cotonou, kinshasa or Douala where the money returns to Nigeria cash undecided

You are basing your assumptions on what you think.

Not what is actually factual. What was factual to me was the oil price, and non-Oil-sales. What is also factual to me is the decreased external reserve and your government borrowing more USD to lump to that. Another fact? If the government used 44 billion USD to save the naira throughout 2018 with crude oil prices ranging from 50-70 USD per barrel...

And now... that same crude oil is currently on 40, with production cuts, and an external reserve less than 40 billion USD. It was enough logic for me to know what’s up.

I don’t need rumours on what CBN or Mefi will do. The numbers are there sir.

You said no one knew anything? Oga, it was you who knew nothing, that is why you changed your stance, because if actual facts backed your former stance, you wouldn’t need to change it.
What facts are you talking about?
1)At the time,no one knew anything about production cuts as there were none.
2)Nigeria reserves has always hovered around this level even with oil at $70/bbl so what's your point about reserves? undecided
3)No one knew how the markets were going to accept oil or how economic reopenings would be.So how would you know if oil won't jump back up upon economic reopening?
4)What If Emefiele and his gang says "fùck it" and sacrifice $10B to defend the naira again and damn the consequences, after all this government isn't known to be too logical and the reserves went as low as $23B 4 years ago and Nigeria didn't turn to Zimbabwe undecided
So what's your point?

There were no numbers to prove anything, just a case of pure dumb luck.
Maybe you analyze better than Bloomberg that was silent on naira matters at the time for lack of data.

Boss. The other time shebi you were shouting Speculators will soon lose their money?

Now you are saying this?

Even Oga Ahib shouting dollar this or that has once championed that Naira this or that. I remember. He argued against me once here, when I was arguing with many others.

My conclusion is that many here base their analysis on their bias based on their emotions at that point in time. Not the actual logic on ground.
What was the logic you had?
Because AFAIK,there was no logic on ground concerning international oil markets. No one know nothing then and Emefiele used that to market propaganda very well and we fell for it.
The evidence is just coming out slowly.
But he might not be done yet,I expect him to pull some last minute stunts on monday like the $100m stunt he pulled some weeks back and later succumb to devaluation pressures or another involuntary float.

Oil prices were low that period tho

We should be in a better position when the markets for oil rebound

am not against them investing....but they should understand there is a reason why bonds in uk 2 percent and 12.5 percents in Nigeria ....2 they should understand that each nation has it credit rating some AA some junk status ...they should also know that investor dont just put money and sleep and wait 7 years like a retire.....no they keep an eye on it and that why bond are traded om secondary markets ...
Exactly.
In essence,a bond is going at 12% in Nigeria because the RISK OF DEFAULT IS HIGHER THAN BOB MARLEY.
When I saw people buying government debt yesterday upon the situation on ground,I just had to conclude that maybe these people are too patriotic to be logical.
Never a bad thing to give your government your money selflessly for the benefit of the nation rather than yourself. cheesy
When the red flags are out there,it will be too late to exit whatever bond because everyone will know at that point and no one will buy,or atleast the buy at 10% of the investment.

With increased capacity in rice production couple with high import duty on importer rice, local rice still maintain almost same price band with foreign counterparts.
This clearly shows that Devaluation may not be the magic wand after all.
Go to Thailand,India and China and take a look at their numbers.
You will know Nigeria's numbers on rice are a joke to be able to compete with imports in a free market.
Who told you that local rice is taking over and at what cost?Smuggled rice from cotonou is still raping local rice in the markets back to back so what are you talking about? undecided
Do you know the pain Nigeria exporters are going through now because of closed borders just so we can grow rice and the amount of forex we are losing because of that?
Will you start raising tariff on each and every import one after the other?

Do you think our people are doing labour there to be able to repatriate all that fx to Nigeria? undecided
Don't you know it's Nigeria export to Central Africa that's bringing in all that?
Why jeorpadize this because we want to grow rice when we can just devalue the naira, leave our borders open to more export trade as a result of the scramble for cheap naira and nigeria goods and frustrate smugglers bringing in product to Nigeria.
Why?
