I think it will spread faster. Especially in June (24°C - 30°C) and July-September (23°C - 29°C) which will still be considered warm elsewhere.

Fortunately, we have enough time to put a mask on every face, and enforce good hygienic practices like washing of hands before entering any market, store, school, church, bank, etc. Enough time to ramp up our testing capabilities massively so we can isolate almost every single person who has the virus, including those who haven't experienced any symptoms of the disease. Meanwhile, our economy can continue to run so that the taxes needed to fund NCDC's aggressive efforts will continue to be paid by profitable businesses and employed workers.

Seun:
Effect Of Temperature On COVID-19: An Unscientific Investigation.

In the early days of the Coronavirus scourge, many Nigerians believed that we wouldn't be affected because of our hot weather. Now that we're testing people, we have seen a sharp increase in the number of confirmed cases, to about 210, which is still quite low for a country with 190 million residents. However many people suspect that the virus has penetrated our society far more deeply than the NCDC statistics suggest. We've noticed that people who travelled to colder countries recently or spend most of their time in air-conditioned spaces, or their direct contacts, are massively over-represented among the confirmed cases. Is this because they are the only ones being tested, or is heat a factor?

Here is the list of the 10 countries that have the highest number of active COVID-19 cases, and their forecasted temperatures for the day:
* USA has 257,790 active cases. The temperature forecast for New York is 8°C - 15°C.
* Italy has 85,388 active cases. The temperature forecast for Rome is 7°C - 25°C.
* Spain has 77,488 active cases. The temperature forecast for Madrid is 6°C - 19°C
* Germany has 65,309 active cases. The temperature forecast for Berlin is 1°C - 12°C
* France has 61,650 active cases. The temperature forecast for Paris is 6°C - 17°C
* UK has 34,428 active cases. The temperature forecast for London is 4°C - 16°C
* Iran has 31,954 active cases. The temperature forecast for Tehran is 8°C - 19°C
* Turkey has 20,012 active cases. The temperature forecast for Istanbul is 8°C - 11°C
* Switzerland has 14,169 active cases. The temperature forecast for Geneva is 3°C - 17°C
* Netherlands has 13,986 active cases. The temperature forecast for Amsterdam is 4°C - 14°C

On average, the top ten countries with Coronavirus have a temperature forecast of 5.5 - 16.5°C. The temperature forecast for Lagos is 26°C - 34°C, and for Abuja, it's 24°C - 36°C. This is a massive, massive difference! The maximum temperature of nine of the countries above is lower than the minimum temperature of Lagos. The maximum temperature of 7 of those countries is lower than the minimum thermostat setting of most Nigerian air-conditioners (18°C).

The countries mentioned above are in Africa, Asia or Europe. What about Africa? Here's our top 5:
* South Africa has 1,401 active cases. The temperature forecast for Johannesburg is 9°C - 15°C.
* Algeria has 1,004 active cases. The temperature forecast for Algiers is 9°C - 17°C.
* Egypt has 703 active cases. The temperature forecast for Cairo is 24°C - 34°C.1
* Tunisia has 472 active cases. The temperature forecast for Tunis is 8°C - 17°C.
* Burkina Faso has 236 active cases. The temperature forecast for Ouagadougou is 28°C - 43°C. 1
1 The Egypt data is misleading because the their average temperature last month was 11.6°C to 26°C, but Burkina Faso is a legitimate outlier; the country is much hotter than Nigeria.

The above data, in spite of the outlier, is enough to convince me that the Coronavirus likes cold weather and probably spreads faster in cold places, such as air-conditioned cars, offices, and homes. This, apart from the lack of testing, may explain why we are yet to see as many cases of transmission outside the circles of travellers and the rich and powerful in Nigeria as expected. It is consistent with what we know about other respiratory illnesses, and why countries like the US expect the disease to slow down in their summer season (starting from June).

When I see videos of Lagos officials spraying open areas e.g. roads & sidewalks in Lagos, I have to laugh, because I strongly suspect that, if they actually bothered to test for the presence of the virus on those surfaces, they'd find nothing at all because the sun already sterilized them.

Knowing that the virus hates our hot temperature gives me hope. If a cold country like South Korea (0°C -13°C forecast for today) could beat the virus without destroying their economy by imposing a total lockdown, a constantly hot country like Nigeria could do much better if we used the same tactics. We need to start testing people who have had close contact with confirmed cases before they show symptoms. We also need to enforce universal wearing of face-masks and social distancing everywhere, which in itself may even be sufficient to end the virus.

May your days be bright and hot. May your air-conditioners be off and your windows wide open (to get rid of aerosolized droplets). Cheers.

Politics / Re: Has Buhari/FG Actually Mishandled COVID-19 Pandemic? by thegloor: 5:09pm On Apr 01, 2020
PassingShot:
I have read a lot of wailing and criticism about the FG’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic since it arrived in Nigeria on Feb 25th. The most recent was reactions to a thread comparing Nigeria’s handling of the crisis to that of UK. Expectedly but sadly, a lot of ignorant commenters were dancing albeit nakedly based on the newspaper’s report which didn’t even say that the UK is handling the pandemic better than Nigeria.

If any unbiased person wants to make any comparison about govts handling of the pandemic, their objective analysis will include parameters such as each govt’s efforts before COVID arrived at their shores (very important), each govt’s immediate response as soon as COVID arrived in their country, number of infected persons (confirmed) and lastly and most importantly, the number of deaths recorded as a result of the pandemic. But since many Nigerians have allowed their common sense to be affected by prejudice and hatred, they have abandoned these relevant parameters in making evaluating the govt’s response to the crisis. Now let’s quickly look at the following facts:

1. Measures taken by the Nigerian Govt before a COVID case was discovered in Nigeria: Long before the pandemic found its way into Nigeria, the FG embarked on monitoring body temperature of people flying into the country to be able to discover who may have showed any signs of the disease. By this time and despite that the disease was at their shores, USA, UK, Iran and many other “saner clime” countries were not even taking this measure. Dr. joe Abah did a thread on it and the World Health Organization commended Nigeria for this measure and going as far as using Nigeria as an example of how countries should respond to the pandemic. Read https://twitter.com/drjoeabah/status/1233989553008119809?lang=en for Dr. Joe’s Twitter thread and https://guardian.ng/news/coronavirus-who-commends-fgs-effort-on-response/ for WHO’s commendation.

2. Number of cases recorded in Nigeria versus that of UK or any other “saner country”: As at the time of writing this article (01/04/2010 @12 noon Naija time), the UK has 25,150 confirmed cases and 1,789 deaths; the USA has 188,639 cases and 4,059 deaths; Iran has 47,593 cases and 3,036 deaths, Italy has 105,792 cases and 12,428 deaths while many other “saner countries” have similar gloomy numbers to show for their efforts. Nigeria on the other hand has recorded 139 cases and 2 deaths. I expect some readers to jump on the fact that Nigeria is not testing as much as the mentioned countries, but the fact remains that while that may be responsible for the low number of confirmed cases, it couldn’t have been responsible for low number of deaths. Not carrying out enough testing would not have prevented people from being struck down by the disease or people dying as a result of it.

3. Another indication that Nigeria’s govt is doing her best in containing the spread of the virus can be seen when one compares the time the country’s first case was discovered to when those of the “saner countries” were discovered and juxtapose with the number of confirmed cases and deaths. Italy had her first case around January 31st, 2020 (two months ago), Spain had its first on Feb. 1st and Italy had it on Feb 21st which was only four days earlier than when Nigeria had hers on Feb 25th. Compare the number of deaths/confirmed cases of these countries and see if you have not been unreasonable in your criticism of the government.

The problem with wailers and destructive critics is that they always shift the goalposts. As such, you can never have any reasonable conversation with them. When the first case was reported in Nigeria, lead by their frustrated Wailer-in-Chief, they said it was a scam to be used to loot money. And when few more cases were confirmed some days after, they turned back to say the govt should have closed the bother long ago! Such is their pathetic life!

Ask them which country Nigeria should have emulated in containing the disease, those of them who still have a bit of sense will stutter because they would not dare say USA, UK, Italy or Germany but the chronic wailers who have obviously lost it all will still compare how Nigeria is managing the spread of the disease to the same UK which has lost almost two thousands of her people to the disease.

Does Nigeria have the facilities or the means to combat the COVID19 pandemic? The answer is a resounding NO. Does the country have a robust health system compared to those “saner countries”? Again, the answer is an emphatic No? Do we have enough money to deploy to tackle any outbreak in the size of that witnessed in UK, Italy, USA or Germany? The answer is an obvious NO. But the fact is that the state of our health system or the size of our purse wasn’t brought about by the current government but a result of many years of failure. So, why wailing uncontrollably instead of supporting the govt’s efforts at preventing the spread of the disease?

Had it been Buhari who reacted the way Trump and Boris Johnson first reacted to the COVID19 outbreak – by dismissing it and making all sorts of joke of it, or just like Seyi Makinde (your “presidential material”) who called it an APC disease, perhaps you would have possibly reacted in such a bad manner. There should be a limit to wailing!

Have a nice day.

Why did you stylishly avoid the number of tests carried out?

Kayceenaz:
It is becoming almost second nature for most Nigerians, both the educated and non-educated classes, to cross the line while pouring out their hearts on national issues. I agree, there are ample question marks on how the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has acted on and reacted to socio-political, economic, and religious matters; spanning from federal character, insurgency, ethno-religious skirmishes, education, malfeasance, to now presidential invisibility before this coronavirus pandemic.

Naturally, we feel betrayed, used, and insignificant to the presidency. Not paling in comparison to status-quo that should be, your feelings are indeed valid. But letting this emotional pain lead you to hurl insults of all sorts at President Buhari, as rampant online, is an overreaction. As you call him unprintable, reprehensible names and ridicule him through jokes/memes, remember he is fallible, someone's husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and holds office of President of Nigeria. It is enough to beg to differ with and criticize constructively his leadership style plus policies. Using constitutional and moral means to show displeasure are in order. Look emotional intelligence's way.

Disturbingly, some people even wish Buhari death, hoping news of his demise filters in soonest. If that's not a representation of the Scriptures' observation that "The heart of man is desperately wicked," then it must be of something worse. If you fall in this category, kindly stop now! Such comments are humor taken too far.

As events unfold and we watch with disappointment, anticipating the National Assembly does the needful and saves the day, let us (Nigerians) amplify our voices to be critically loud enough, not insulting enough.

keneguae:

Quick question; were you given the ORIGINAL of this model of Firman?

There are fakes in the market and it usually does this. I once unknowingly bought the fake one from J.I Okpala in Benin City, it did not last a month before giving me all kinds of problems. I know better now, though.

The original one has just FIRMAN engraved on the tank, the air filter cover and the carburetor. The bolt and nuts are silver unlike the fake one which is gold. The fake one also has SUM ECFIRMAN engraved on the tank instead of FIRMAN.

Does the above descriptions match yours?

If yes to the original's description, you are good to go and only need to take it to the mechanic, who will most likely change the capacitor to a bigger capacity.

If the fake's description fits, bro, I am afraid it will keep coming up with issues(constant oil shortage, even drying up completely at times) just like mine back then, which I ended up giving out to a friend who wanted it. This was what led me to buy Tec Junior Max 11 months ago, which hasn't given me one single issue.

Anyway, we live to learn.
