He may be the aggressor but has the west not done worse? Of course we all should speak out against injustice but not be selective. The west has caused a lot of harm too but not held accountable.
When you say "the west", it's helpful to break it down into its major players, first the US and [the western] Europe[an nations]. The Anzac nations and Canada are bit players.

Most definitely the US and the UK bear the responsibility for the mess that Iraq has become, and that action could not and cannot be justified now. But the Europeans were firmly against it. The continuing hypocrisy in Palestine (that land is definitely theirs, insofar as any people can be said to have a claim to land in this world) is also firmly opposed by the EU, as America taking religion too far.

However, since the Cold War at least, the west is forced to moralize intensively each time it takes military action, irrespective of what the planners of the action really think. And again, western nations are gradually becoming decadent as opposed to China and Russia and all those people who are still very conversant with hardship, so the west has to persuade its people first before it does anything, because they are not as ready to leave their pub drinking and iPhone buying and Lanzarote-holidaying to carry a gun, enter a tank and go and find other people's trouble, which means extensive justification that can at least withstand scrutiny, irrespective of how much of a lie it really is.

Putin, on the other hand, basically woke up in the morning, decided that his ex was having too much fun without him and decided to go and chase her away from the new guy she has been eyeing. No justification, not bothering to tell the world his reasons, nothing.

The two don't compare.

I agree. Also is Ukraine not in Europe even if they are not part of the Union as of yet. Hardly in the same position as Afghanistan and Syria.
More to the point they are oyibo Christians and the UK population would prefer immigrants (many of them will never go back) who are more like than unlike them. This is reality.

As Trump blabbed in a non-Freudian slip, the US would happily take the whole of Norway overnight if they decided to emigrate to the U.S., black and brown wait at the door first.

Are you guys observing the double standard in this Russia v Ukraine saga?
Not home office is saying Ukraninans with families here can come but the same home office denied Syrians and Afghans refuge saying they should claim assylum in thier first safe country of arrival. Then FIFA and UEFA has suspended Russia yet when The UK, France and US invaded Iraq, Libya and Syria, they were not suspended. Also the media organisations here are often fond of accusing the Russian media of bias but are yet to analyse the situation from a Russian perspective or from a Black man's perspective. So much hypocrysy. I pray that peace will reign and both parties will resolve their issues. Putin took a wrong step and the west also.
Nobody ever spent time to justify analysing World War 2 from Hitler's perspective, because its beyond the pale.
And yes, many publications have spoken about what could possibly be Putin's motive, but it's very clear that he is the aggressor here, not Ukraine and Ukraine's joining NATO, had that ever happened (very unlikely), would be a defensive, not offensive move.

Is it right for an employer to include in your work contact that after you have left the company you cannot work for a competitor or a company that provides similar services 6 months after you leave?
Called a non-compete clause and is common.

This is absolutely incorrect.
For all the reasons you mentioned above, the person will still go ahead with the marriage. Trust me, if the OP gets a sponsored tier 2 visa a month to his wedding, he may back out because he won't be needing the girl again.
Your post was way off from what I said.
I simply pointed out that the OP is being honest with his need for a wife regarding his possible study/visa plans, and nothing more than that.

I must disagree with that - I know of many cases where this was done.

hi house.. good morning, can someone please suggest the best uk banking or saving app (like piggy vest in nigeria) that one can use to save money without restrictions, I'm trying my best to cultivate the habit of saving as much.. thank you
https://www.moneysupermarket.com/savings/
Interest rates are going up gradually, but savings product rates are still abysmal, and inflation is eating up the value of money left in savings accounts.
Best strategy would be a mix of investments and savings so hopefully growth in the former can cancel out the lousy interest rates and loss of value in the latter.

What's the right reason? grin
There's no right one, and actually what the OP is thinking about is no different from the other reasons people venture into marriage (such as someone to support me/have children with/society and the church said so/I thought marriage means sex on tap, etc.).

The only difference is that he's being honest about his calculations, while most people aren't and prefer to dress their own calculations up.

@Temi231, I’m assuming you are in a rented apartment. Don’t you need to check with your landlord before you change the flooring in the house?
Secondly I won’t advise you to measure the carpets yourself, the way they lay carpets here is different from what we do in Nigeria. Carpets are laid as one piece and it flows through the entire house and under the doors and right through the stairs without any cut and join. Based on that, I will recommend getting a professional carpet fitter to measure and lay the carpet for you. There are many people on Facebook who specialise in carpet fitting. Just check your local Facebook page. You’ll also need an underlay for the carpet.
I shouldn't think she meant fitting a carpet, more like just buying one of the roll-up variety to place on a bare floor.

The domiciliary care work industry don't pay for travel so you can be driving up and down for work for 15hours but paid 8hours. Its very draining so its also important you are sure of what the work entails before you commit yourself

Now with tier 2, employers are putting payback clause amount if you leave early . ... that i blame home office. They collect as hugh as 2k in fees per employee

hussle of an immigrants no easy. Citizens have more ability to vex and not work
The domiciliary care people have won a court case to get paid for the hours they spend driving to their appointments, read it somewhere.
I hear domiciliary care does pay more per hour, but working in people's homes can be a pitfall in itself, any mad person can accuse you of anything when na only you and them and cause nuisance to you.

UK elders in the house I greet, ohh.

Please do you have a specific place to buy a TV? We went to Curry as the closest place to us, but the price we got was much more than what we saw online. Can we also Order online? Also they don’t have the brand we wanted.

Do we also need to check for energy consumption rating for the TV? I saw on the cartons of the last tenant , he uses Rating A. Does this matter.

Also, how long does the broadband people come around to fix internet for us. I am using Virgin media as is the strongest In my area.

Also, do you think it's advisable to go into insurance for the house? I feel like since it's not my home no need, but they are saying because of my valuables.

Thank you
Argos, John Lewis, even Amazon.
Amazon annoy me, but to be honest, they have about the best returns policy, they have so much money that they don't argue.

Energy consumption rating is a difficult thing to pin down, generally the bigger the screen the more energy it consumes, and of course the longer you watch it the more you use up, but in the grand scheme of things different energy ratings don't save anything really worthwhile over time.

Contents insurance is different from building insurance. It covers your own property while its the landlord that takes out building insurance to cover the building itself. I have contents insurance; you decide if you want it.

Broadband can take up to 3 weeks to set up depending.

But such behaviour from ANY employer regardless of the sector is classed as "modern slavery" and it should be reported as its a serious criminal offence.
The people who sign up for this stuff just want themselves out of their countries and in the UK (or other developed country) and are usually willing to put up with any form of treatment to achieve this aim. Going near the police is usually not on their list of career choices. The new so-called care visa will open up further opportunities for this sort of thing, unfortunately.

The maximum amount allowable (tax free) by HMRC is £8,000 however this does not mean that you will receive the entire amount from your employer. The amount you receive will depend on the qualifying expenses you claim for with the relevant supporting documents. For instance if the cost of hiring a moving van is £3,000, your employer will only reimburse £3,000 when you present the receipt. They are not going to dash you £8,000 for jolly cheesy

Also check the policy of your employer as some employers may require you to repay the money if you leave the company or trust within a certain time.
Correct regarding the above.
Relocation expenses of course have to be both documented and reasonable (some organisations have exhaustive lists) and its also fairly standard for those expenses to be repayable if the employee takes off again before the employer has gotten plenty work out of them.

How many hours of driving lessons would you recommend for brush up purposes?
That would obviously depend on the individual.
You need a lot of focus to drive here, as un-learning things is more difficult than learning something previously not known.
Getting used to driving on the left is one struggle, overcoming all those reflexes from driving on the right, and getting used to looking out for lane markings and road signs is another - Nigerian roads are unmarked and have no road signs, we just step on the accelerator and go and change lanes as we please, so that's something totally new to learn.

Everyone's different, but as a general rule the more you have to think about, the less likely you are to focus, so bear that in mind each time you get on to the road.

Be careful before dabbling into btl, make sure you do your numbers well because you could be paying out of pocket as a private landlord because hmrc considers rent as income. Not to talk about all the regulations, cost and tenant wahala. Some landlords will be fixing kaylov12's fence after the storm.

Look into registering a limited company for btl if you want to go into it
These two are key.
Not only that, you can't deduct mortgage payments for tax purposes so HMRC gets to bite a huge chunk if your rent income slides you into a higher tax band.

Observations
Lane discipline
Meeting/joining traffic
Cutting corners
Not driving too slow.

This are other critical aspects people from naija use to fail as well.

2 guys that has been driving in naija for years and is currently driving in UK, has failed the twice.

Guy failed

first test in less than 10min. Roundabout going right but was on the wrong lane. Them kuku bring am back to test center.

Second test was the funny one. He used the wrong lane to exit the gate of the test center. So he basically failed in less than 5min. Another guy failed the test doing the same thing that day. Laugh one finish me.
"If you can drive in Lagos you can drive everywhere"
Key observations.
The first guy most likely did not use an instructor ("Why I go waste money, I sabi drive already!), or failed to pay attention, because any instructor worth their salt will take you over the driving test route(s) a few times before test day, starting from the test centre itself.

Yes it is

Thank you
I was worried that the validity of the international driver's license must begin before the date of entry to the UK.
Thank you
Irrespective of which license you get, your entitlement to drive in the UK on a non-UK licence ends exactly one year from the day you entered the UK on your Tier 4 visa, so you must have changed to a full UK licence by then if you wish to continue driving around.

I don't know how things are now (hopefully shouldn't have changed), but back in the day, passing your test in Aberdeen and all those less populated areas in Scotland was way easier than in places like Manchester and London. Once you master roundabouts, all else shouldn't be a problem.

You dont need ILR, but you need to have a visa with at least a couple of years to go on it, i.e. the entity giving you the mortgage needs to be sure that you are likely to remain in the UK to earn money and be paying it.

Starling is treating me fine them and dem dey add money towards the end of the month like this chase.

I will look into Chase bank.
Starling pays monthly interest, based on what the current bank base rate is (0.25%) or whatever.
Chase gives cashback, which means that they give you back 1% of every qualifying purchase you make. In other words, if you pay 100 pounds for something using your Chase debit card, the bank will credit 1 pound back to your account.

Currently, that's the best deal available from a debit card. It only lasts for one year from the date of opening of the account, so a good idea would be to open a Chase account, use it for one year, then switch it into an account offering a switching bonus, or something along those lines.

Hello House, I finally land on this thread. Praise God and everyone who gave invaluable advise on the study visa thread. We arrived 2 weeks ago but I have been busy searching for accommodation etc and settling in. I have contacted the council about school and chosen 4 schools for my son. I did everything via email and phone call. Do I need to do anything else ? And will I be required to pay any fees for uniforms etc ? In addition do I need to visit the actual schools or just wait to hear back from the council ? Finally I am studying business analytics, so we are learning the basics of R and data visualization, I’m also learning python and SQL on my own so I can position to apply for data analyst roles in addition to business analyst roles. Can any one give advise on how to get graduate tier 2 sponsorship jobs in these (tech/business) fields. Also when should I start applying. In addition, hubby is has a BSc in accounting and Masters in Marketing. What are his possible job prospects for tier 2 sponsorship? Please any and every advise will be appreciated. Also we’d like introduction to the Nigerian community in Bournemouth. Thanks once again
All you need to do is seek a Redeemed church near you and the Nigerian community and all its weird behaviours and transplanted undiluted Nigerian thought patterns will be added unto you.
