Update on my passport application.
So i registered in April and made payment in May. I decided to go to the high commission yesterday just to ask questions and I was attended to. Thank God. The whole process was less than 30 mins.
The man at the gate was very nice. 20 pounds postal order and a delivery envelope was what i got. Though one other guy started shouting that i paid in may and theyre still attending to April. Saying i should get a 120pounds postal order insted. His oga's word trumped his own sha and they allowed me in for biometrics and all.

Fast track is officially suspended but it is still on for 120pounds postal order. Only with a caveat that youll sign some undertaken, cant remember what it was.
Officially free from passport wahala wheew thank God!

I should add that the job opening is not related to what I'm studying rather the skills and short employment (about 6 months) I had in Nigeria before leaving.

If you only consider jobs related to what you're studying, you might not get anything any time soon when you start searching.
Again, if you only consider jobs where the employer specifically offers sponsorship, the foregoing might also hold true.

You should be looking for graduate programs starting September 2022 now. Usually advertised up to a year in advance.

You only get state-sponsored nursery education if your child is over 3, number of hours varies from 15 hours in England to 30 in Scotland.

I have registered but didn't get any confirmation email sent to me and its been like a week now. My passport is due to expire Dec but Uni has been consistent in sending reminder emails. The Nigerian HC is the only place where you can get your passport renewed in the UK.
You're now in their loop - they are seriously backlogged, by up to 7 months or so.
For others coming behind, if you've got a passport within 6 months of expiry, renew it in Nigeria before you come to the UK.

Thanks the response. It's really because of the International 'Experience'. For the black box, no way to avoid it as the cheapest insurer I saw is the one offering that option.

I reduced my project annual mileage from 2K miles to 1K miles and my premium has dropped to around £1,500 thereabout.

As someone who has recently arrived from Nigeria, I would avoid that black box in your position.
It takes one quite a while to overcome the style of driving we've used all our lives in Naija.
Leave the comparison sites and try the insurance companies one by one to find one that will give you insurance without the black box.

The Tories are free marketers and believers in the invisible hand - they won't bring out government money to pay for/subsidise HGV training courses, they believe that the evident demand will drive people towards the sector eventually. In fairness, they have evidence for that - look at nursing bursaries which they refused to reinstate despite the pressure, and now nursing courses across the UK are full this year as people fork out the money to future-proof themselves by getting into the healthcare sector.

If you check the job boards you'll see quite a few adverts for graduate programs for 2022.
I'm aware of PwC's 2022 program, for instance.

You guys are just petty. Firstly we have a bad reading culture in Nigeria and many folks don't have enough patience to read through and understand clearly. Secondly we have lots of minors here, folks less than 18 yrs for undergraduate study and even those older like in early twenties who still don't know their left from right and it's easy to detect them here from the kind of questions being asked.

Let's always be more reasonable in our responses, the visa application questions are a bit technical and some times it's difficult for some to answer yes or no. Using our personal experience as a standard for everyone is very selfish and unreasonable. Lots of people even asked questions here and never get answers.

So you know you don't know how to read and you see that as a virtue? And you want to go to study in a country where you have to know not only how to read, but also how to research and understand what you are reading, and you believe that you can just skip all that Nigerian-style?

I have said my own. Just concerned about the money people are spending and still getting refused. There are credible agencies out there that people can consult and get sorted. The kind of questions people are asking here shows they need help.

The so-called agents claim to be so on the basis of information freely available on the internet to anyone who can read English.
After consulting 'agents" to fill a simple visa form, perhaps these same students will also consult agents to carry out their research and complete their school assignments for them when they get to the UK.

I will try to negotiate a suspension of rent pending when we are able to collect the key to the apartment.

Except the landlord is a personal friend of yours or the house is in bad condition, they have absolutely no reason to "suspend"" the rent pending your arrival. I think you should hang on a bit longer and wait for your visa to come out or cancel altogether and cut your losses.

They didn't promise you a job, they said come in, fund the Home Office Enterprises with your visa fees, fund the UK university system with your school fees, provide cheap labour for a while, preferably in care homes to keep our underfunded eldercare system afloat, then if you find a job paying a certain amount and if you can get sponsorship you can/might stay. The terms of the deal were clear - did you not read your own copy of the agreement before you signed?!

If you've signed a contract you have a legally binding agreement, so its only if the landlord decides to show goodwill. Otherwise, they've every right to keep your money.

I've not spent much time in Glasgow, just passing through on my way to or from London by night bus when I was a student in Aberdeen, but I have memories of the volume of profanity you hear in that their bus station behind GCU or on the couple of times I upgraded to a train and had to walk from Central to Queen Street. I don't think I've heard so many "f-cks" thrown around in a short space of time, even in London.

But on the other hand, I do agree with you about the friendliness of Glesga people, they are known for that, along with that their strong accent, they have this way of getting up close and initiating conversations (someone at a bus station once took it upon himself to show me how to pronounce Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen properly and gave me a lecture about the Aberdeen dialect).

I agree, the Nigerian in me wanted to propose the easiest solution, but knows it is better to attempt to wean a Nigerian off being Nigerian step by step.
You can only propose gradually reducing opportunities for egunje/show of power, not eliminating them altogether.

And what you call mental issues are probably just the normal oyibo way of doing things, here the difference between those wey dey craze and those wey no dey craze is not always perceptible. You have to learn to roll with it.

This is not true, if the house is advertised for 500 or 1000 that is exactly what you should pay, you don't offer to pay higher amount, you can offer to pay more than one mouth rent deposit in advance just to secure the place.

If you want to get a house quicker as a student look for houses a bit away from your school, 15-20mins distance, houses closer to universities are in hot demand now but by Feb up the demand drops.

Alternatively..rent school accommodation for only one semester then move out after that for a private accommodation which is cheaper.

If you are renting through an agent you will be asked to pay additional fees for their services, for paper work and even renewing that tenancy agreement.

And all the rush to secure property close to school makes no sense and simply drives up prices in that desired area. Anywhere you live within commuting distance is fine, remember that a) you will have other commitments in that city aside from going to school, e.g. your place(s) of work could be anywhere in the city, and b) as students you can get discounted bus monthly or weekly passes and bus passes generally allow for unlimited travel on that service in most cities.

For those who have children, your priority should be finding areas with good schools, and living as close to them as possible, because that is the best way to make life easier for yourself. Centrally located schools are usually not as good as those farther out in the suburbs, for instance. All in all there's a mix of factors you take into consideration when house hunting, not just living in Akoka because you are going to Unilag.

On a serious note, the lack of sensible thinking among those with power in Nigeria is what will kill the country. Why is it not possible for them to simply allow for people abroad to opt to reprint passports, given that all the info is contained in their database in Abuja? All they could have done is to say if you are happy reusing the photo we've already got in our database for you (and we've also got your fingerprints too), pay the fee, we'll reprint your passport for you, and you come to the HC on a specific day and collect it in person.

But no, common sense is not a Nigerian feature, everyone come to Northumberland Avenue and hang around, so we can show how dysfunctional we are.

Unfortunately, Nigerians abroad are generally no different from or less dysfunctional than Nigerians in Nigeria - you're more likely to find their strange and rather senseless feeling of being in competition with themselves than any genuine desire to help. Relate with Nigerians as individuals, and not as groups, you're more likely to achieve something that way.

Why do you want to live close to your university? To save on transport costs? Everyone else has the same idea, so property around there would probably be at a premium.

Expand your search. The university is not necessarily the nexus around which you should structure your stay, you and your wife will want to get jobs, which could be anywhere, etc. etc. All you need is a place that is well-served by bus links and from where you can get to your university and any other potential locations of interest reasonably quickly. Except where either of you have mobility issues, factor in some walking into your transport options.
