Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola was greeted with series of embarrassing songs as he arrived home of late political activist, Baba Omojola after the his body arrived home for his lying-in-state at his family's residence in Surulre, Lagos State.

The governor arrived with his convoy unable to go into the premises due to presence of a van that contained speakers blaring comradely songs for the activists at the venue.

The van was used to obstruct movement of vehicles into the residence. Upon his arrival however, aides of the governor who wanted to take their convoy in ordered that the van be removed for the governor, but the activists insisted the governor must alight from own his car and walk into the premises like others did. One activist, Debo Adeniran, who coordinated the van said with sarcarsm, that the governor could call his LASTMA officials to tow the van out of the way.

Upon realizing the seriousness of the activists, Mr. Fashola stepped down from his car and walked into the premises.

But as Mr. Fashola inched towards the house, more activists who had learned of his arrival took the microphone to sing anti-oppressor government song. Some lines in their songs tagged the governor "Ole-ole", translating to the calling the governor a thief.

The activists also substituted imperative words into their chorus, asking Mr. Fashola to leave the event to avoid his further embarrassment.

It was not known whether the governor had intention to stay long enough to address participants, but he left soon as the chants by activists gained more tempo.

Asked why Mr. Fashola had to be rejected at the event, the activists told Saharareporters that the governor was only a hypocrite pretending to be familiar with the late Baba Omojola.

A comrade said: "You won't believe they (government) don't allow Baba into their office whenever he was there on pressing public issues that affect the masse. But now that Baba is dead, Fashola is now here to show fake familiarity"

Another activist said it was now common for politicians to take advantage of the death of Comrades to woo families and relations of the bereaved.

"They did same when Gani Fawehinmi died. They hated him when he was alive because he spoke bitter truth to them and also challenged them to court especially on fake Toronto certificate of Tinubu, but after his death, they began pretending they were best of friends with him and began creating park and programs to deceive the public", a civil society leader who was present during the incidence said.

"That has become their forte. They suppress voices of the masses but whenever a strong activist whose voice gave them nightmare dies, they rejoice by sponsoring his funeral", he added.

The Lagos State Government tarred the Chief Onitana Street where Baba Omojola lived as part of gestures for his funeral. During a brief chat with SaharaTV crew recently, son of Baba Omojola, Akinola Omojola commented that it takes a prominent person to die for Government to repair a road in Nigeria.

It would be recalled that Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa was also booed recently as he strayed into the night of tributes and socials in memory of Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi.

"They are all hypocrites and we will continue to embarrass them if they won't stop insulting us to our face by pretending they were friends with our gone heroes", a protester said.

In the course of many political debates, I see fake analysts making reference to how the North is against GEJ. It really makes me laugh. It is either these fake analysts have their heads in the sand or are extremely naive.

The north right now is far more divided than the south. The north is divided both along religious lines and ethnic lines. Many minority northerners are completely fed up to the teeth with the shenanigans of the "born-to-rule" click. Just look at the response from the OBJ letter to see a clear divide in the North. This will clearly play out in 2015. GEJ will only have low votes in the core Northern states, just like he did in 2011, because of religious bias. Interestingly, these include all the states of the G7 crew. So GEJ's votes wont change much in 2015, from what it was in 2011. Even the Northern governors forum is completely in disarray.

As for Amaechi, he could not even fill a little stadium a few days ago. The stands were all empty. Most people who will go for his rally in PH will just be going to have fun, not because they will vote against GEJ in 2015. The south west will be clearly divided in 2015 and GEJ will still have majority votes. APC has lost credibility in many south west states, especially Lagos and Ekiti. APC has even lost the little momentum they were building with their wooing of expired PDP goons like OBJ and IBB.

The core North has never had a problem with free education. They have never had a problem of poeple not being able to afford education. What the north has had is apathy for education. The people have very little interest in education. It is a cultural problem ably supported by the ruling elite. When I was in school, every Northerner from the core Northern states were sponsored by their state government and giving everything they needed. But you still wont find them in school. Declaring free education in Kano is meaningless. It means nothing

Being debt free is not the same thing as being in good financial state. A third world country like Nigeria trying to develop and with the population we have, is not expected to be debt free. America is not debt free. The few countries in the world that are debt free are low population countries. What is important is how much development you put in place, not how debt free you left the country. Nigeria would have been better off with constant power, world class hospitals, transformed education, an industrial revolution and $50 billion debt when he left, than being debt free.

I have been having a good laugh at the lamentation from the APC GANG over GEJ's reply. They had expected him to go all out and engaged in a roforofo fight with OBJ so they can find more reasons to disparage him. First, the president took his time and went about his business promising to respond at the appropriate time, not the time his haters wanted him to.

Finally, he responded with so much composure, decorum and maturity to further throw OBJ under the train. I can see that his haters are really disappointed because he has puctured their expections of a dirty street fight. This GEJ self. The guy no dey give enemies any chance.

1. Let's assume there's no division in PDP. INEC does not have powers to declare any seat vacant. Only courts can do that. INEC won't conduct election into any seat that's a subject of litigation. A supreme court verdict will have to be procured for INEC to act on any seat. It has 90 days to conduct election into such seat. Now, Abegunde's case has been on appeal for about 18 months. Judgment's day has not been reserved and no one knows when the verdict ll come out. Let's say there's an unfavorable verdict in April next year, an appeal to supreme court ll be filed in May 2014 and the cycle continues. That case ll last till early 2015. "Can you see what I am seeing"?



2. 3 (Ekiti, Osun, Edo) not 2 ACN governors retrieved their stolen mandate through litigation. In such cases, Court of Appeal, not the Supreme Court, has the definitive actionable ruling as stipulated by the 1999 constitution. So, once the court of appeal makes a pronouncement on election petition matters, it's final. Now the case at hand is completely different. One is election petition where the onus is on petitioner to prove that election did not comply substantially with electoral laws and as such be canceled or that s/he be declared the winner when "mago mago and wuru wuru" votes are voided. The other is the constitutionality or otherwise of moving from one party to another after election.

3.Amaechi case is remotely relevant but has little or no effect. Amaechi's case confirms that independent candidates can't stand for election in Nigeria, that a serving politician must belong to a political party. It's a classic case on "internal democracy" in a party, a so called fight against imposition.

Abegunde seat was declared vacant in May 2012. The case is on appeal and is yet to be decided as at December 2013. Yet there is still an option of appeal to the supreme court. Abegunde ll serve his term, that's pure common sense.

You people keep missing the point. There are only two ways APC can win. They either rig, or get the masses to vote for them in a free and fair election. Rigging to win a presidential election against an incumbent is not possible. So they are left with winning by popular vote in a a free and fair election. But alas, they are now the old PDP. According to your logic, any disagreement between any two members of a party can constitute a division. You obviously are ignorant. A division has to cause the party to factionalise before it can pass as a division. That is why PDP had to go to court to get that judgement. If there was no "disagreement" in the LP, why would the LP rep have defected in the first place. The court sacked him because the party was not factionalized, not because there were no quarrels in the party. They are always quarrels and disagreements in every party at every time.

AKURE—The Federal High Court sitting in Akure, yesterday, sacked a National Assembly member representing Akure South and North in the Federal House of Representatives, Mr. Ifedayo Abegunde for defecting from the Labour Party, LP, for the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

Abegunde, who is a governorship aspirant of ACN in the state, was subsequently asked to vacant his seat at the House of Representatives.

Delivering judgment, Justice Grace Okeke hinged her decision on the fact that there was no division within the ruling LP before the lawmaker decamped from it to ACN.

Abegunde, who is a two- term member of the House of Representative, had early this year, dumped the ruling LP, the platform on which he got elected to the National Assembly for the rival ACN, alleging that there was crisis within LP.

His approach of the court was to halt his recalled by LP, following a motion at the state House of Assembly calling for his recall and the declaration of his seat vacant.

Abegunde, through his lawyer, Mr. Kola Olawoye, ran to the court, seeking for its protection from being recalled, arguing that by the provisions of Section 68(1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution and the imbroglio, division and fractionalisation in LP, he was entitled to dump the party.

But, the defence counsel and the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, leading the Director of Civil Litigation, Mr. Rotimi Olamide, submitted that since Abegunde had dumped LP and had not proved any division within the party, he had automatically vacated his seat as a federal lawmaker.

In her judgment, Justice Gloria Okeke said without a political party, no candidate could contest an election since there was no provision for independent candidacy in Nigerian elections.

She cited a Supreme Court decision in Amaechi vs INEC (2008) 5 NWLR Pt. 1080, adding that, “if it is only a party that canvasses for votes, it follows that it is a party that wins an election. A good or bad candidate may enhance or diminish the prospect of his party in winning, but at the end of the day it is the party that wins or loses an election.”

Okeke held further that Abegunde could not prove the alleged division and crisis in LP by the virtue of the letter signed by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Akin Orebiyi, that “we are not aware of any crisis or issue concerning dispute in LP.”

Jegede, Mimiko hail judgment

While Jegede hailed the judgment as a landmark in Nigerian legal history, the plaintiff’s counsel, Olawoye, said it was unacceptable and that his client would appeal against it.

Reacting, Governor Olusegun Mimiko described the judgment as a victory for the masses of the state that voted enmasse for the victory of LP at the polls.

The governor, who said this while addressing party supporters in Akure, said: “I want to assure you that nobody can fight God and win. Labour Party is God’s own party. Inasmuch as we are working day and night to see that the living standard of our people improves, there is nothing anybody can do to us. We are not going to look back.”

He charged them to continue to maintain peace which the party is known for and be vigilant and look out for strange faces around them, warning that anyone attempting to cause trouble in the state would be dealt with according to the law.

Mimiko said: “I want to appeal to you to be very vigilant. Some people will surely come to influence you with money. You have to be very watchful of strangers in your midst. With God on our side, Labour Party will surely succeed.”

Mimiko expressed happiness over the large turn-out of the people in support of the party, noting that LP stands for truth and justice, stressing that no amount of propaganda would deter his administration from fulfilling its promises to the people.
