Foreign Affairs / Russia-ukraine War: Zelenskyy Pledges To Retake Lysychansk by Thinkfree(m): 3:04pm On Jul 04, 2022
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has acknowledged that his forces have withdrawn from the bombed-out city of Lysychansk, the last Ukrainian stronghold in the eastern Luhansk province.

But he pledged late on Sunday to regain control of the lost territory with the help of long-range Western weapons.

Russia said its capture of Lysychansk less than a week after taking neighbouring Severdonetsk gave it full control of Luhansk – a political win that meets a key Kremlin war goal. The battlefield focus now shifts to the neighbouring Donetsk province which, together with Luhansk, makes up what is known as the Donbas region.

“If the commanders of our army withdraw people from certain points at the front, where the enemy has the greatest advantage in firepower, and this also applies to Lysychansk, it means only one thing,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address.

“That we will return thanks to our tactics, thanks to the increase in the supply of modern weapons.”

“The fact that we protect the lives of our soldiers, our people, plays an equally important role. We will rebuild the walls, we will win back the land, and people must be protected above all else,” he added.

Since abandoning an assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, Russia has concentrated its military operation on the industrial Donbas heartland, where Moscow-backed separatist proxies have been fighting the Ukrainian army since 2014.

Going by your stats Christian population in Nigeria would take 75-80%. If this what you have in your imagination, please answer the following questions.
Why the Muslims that you claimed to be minority decides who win presidential election?

Why do they have more representatives as the national assembly than the Christians majority?
I want to give you this for free, the biggest gift southern Nigeria could get from the north in 2023 is Tinubu.

Politics / JAGABAN Means Pacesetter by Thinkfree(m): 3:37pm On Jun 29, 2022
Jagaba means pacesetter, trailblazer, leader, etc. The Emir of Borgu must have recognised the leadership qualities and exploits of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; and may have been blessed with a glimpse of the future, foreseeing Tinubu’s role in the realisation of the Presidency of PMB, and perhaps Tinubu’s own presidency to come. Tinubu’s presidential ambition is the oldest, amongst the APC stock, and he has been the first to inform PMB, and the nation as a whole. No one can take away the credit of the success of the APC from Tinubu; especially from its formation in 2014, and its victory at the polls in 2015. Tinubu is inarguably the leader of the APC in the South West, and it is a home truth to the APC, that without Asiwaju’s South-west APC in 2019; the elections would have been lost.

Senator Kashim Shettima, former governor of Borno state, whom I fondly call Master Builder, as the architect of the emancipation and reconstruction of Borno from the destruction of Boko Haram; appears in front of every TV camera, and before every audio recorder of all the reporters, covering the Asiwaju campaigns. He is in every image of the campaign trail, and consultation visits of Asiwaju, tirelessly by his side, offering his support, time, resources and fine oratory. In a video of one of such visits, Shettima waxes, “Asiwaju’s name is synonymous with the evolution of democracy in this country. At a critical juncture in our nation’s history, when Atiku Abubakar was harassed and chased out of the PDP, it was Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu that provided him a sanctuary and platform to contest for the Presidency of this country, under the Action Congress.

Where others see division to exploit, he sees opportunities for collaboration. When his colleagues as governors were scampering for a space on the dining table in Aso Rock, he was laying the foundation of modern Lagos, under an antagonistic Federal Government. From his lonely outpost in Lagos, he started a process, of deconstruction and delegitimization of the PDP rigging machine in the South West. Ever a man of peace, he successfully retrieved the stolen mandates of John Kayode Fayemi in Ekiti, of Rauf Aregbesola in Osun, and of Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole in Edo. This process culminated in the formation of the APC, and the subsequent dethronement of PDP in the 2015 general elections.”

At the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Support Groups Management Council Conference in Abuja, Shettima gave Tinubu the credit of being one of the leaders, shaping the country to greater heights. Kashim singled Tinubu as one of those leaders who are not tied to tribal or religious sentiments.

“Tinubu has a propensity for sacrificing his comfort to protect the country’s democracy.” He said, “so much has been said about this political enigma, by hacks, with a poor sense of history. The path that has led us to Asiwaju didn’t happen by chance. He provided sanctuaries for fleeing patriots, who are very much around to testify to his large heart. Our younger patriots must be in the know, about Tinubu’s struggles from two decades past, when he was the backbone of the opposition, and how he was fiercely antagonised and politically ostracised by the ruling party, the PDP.”

I have followed Kashim Shettima’s leadership footprints from his days as Borno governor. I remember vividly, a video where he was tasting the ‘kosai’ cooked for school pupils, to fully appreciate the quality of what his state’s pupils’ were being fed. He would drop blocks fabricated for the building projects in his state to ascertain the quality of what is to be used by contractors. Gov. Zulum was right behind him in those oversight visits across the state. Today, Kashim has not only left the legacies of the projects he had completed in the state; but has also left behind a daring and purposeful leader in Zulum. It is a no brainer, for a Kashim to happen in Tinubu’s team. Purposeful leadership that nurtures future and competent leaders is the nexus.

Speaking about Tinubu’s legacies in Lagos is like counting the mountains, rivers and plains in Africa. They are monumental, finely placed and indelible. Lagos today has an economy that is larger than so many African countries combined. Just recently, it attracted half a billion dollars in investment, by the US Consulate. Google and Microsoft are huge investors in Lagos, in millions of dollars. Foreigners and Nigerian citizens are flocking into Lagos everyday, in their thousands. No politician in Nigeria, has a larger roll-call of proteges that have become household names and successes in the Nigerian political and technocratic landscapes, like Asiwaju does. The likes of Kashim in Tinubu’s campaign team, cements Tinubu as the most popular southern presidential candidate in the North. Left to me, Kashim should be Tinubu’s campaign DG already.

Tahir is Talban Bauchi.

Ukrainian troops will “have to be withdrawn” from the mostly Russian-occupied battleground city of Severodonetsk, the Luhansk governor said on television on Friday.

“Remaining in positions smashed to pieces over many months just for the sake of staying there does not make sense,” Serhiy Haidai said.

He did not indicate whether troops would be withdrawn immediately, or over what time frame the withdrawal would happen.

The UK’s defence ministry said on Thursday some Ukrainian troops had withdrawn from Lysychansk to avoid being encircled. If Russia takes both Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, it will hold the Luhansk region, which is one of the two regions that make up the Donbas.

Politics / 2023 Election;peter Obi Is Not A Movement by Thinkfree(m): 9:38pm On Jun 21, 2022
So many people are saying peter obi is a Movement, a Tsunami and hurricane that is going to take political power from A.P.C at most and P.D.P to say the least. They believe that he doesn’t need political structure to win presidential election in a country like Nigeria where poverty and unemployment have forced most of its citizens to do so many crazy things to make ends meet.

Some regional (local) political analysts in the corners of their one bedroom self contained have opined that this movement is beyond and bigger than peter Obi himself, that it is going to be contest between the masses and the elites.
Which masses are they really talking about?
The hungry masses that are willing to sale their vote to the highest bidder? Or
The masses that will be disenfranchised by Simon Ekpa’s faction of ipob in south east?
Certainly not the masses that will overwhelmingly vote for Tinubu in south West.
Peter Obi may be a good man in his own capacity but not movement or tsunami as his media hypemen are saying.
The only person that could claim to be a”Movement” in Nigeria politics is President Muhammadu Buhari of 2015. Even with the “cult-like” followership that he enjoyed he never ignored political structure like Peter Obi and his followers.

Questions for those saying structure is not necessary for peter obi to win presidential election.
Can Buhari win election in South west without the support of JAGABAN and his followers?
Could he had won 2015 election in North central without the help of Saraki, Dino melayi, Babangida aliyu, George Akume, Ortom,Abdullahi Adamu, lalong e.t.c?
What about North west without kwankwaso, ganduje, El-rufai, Tambuwal, wamako, yerima yari, masari?
North east without Atiku, yuguda, kyari, Ali modu sheriff, shetima, Zulum and Dankwambo?

Foreign Affairs / Zelenskyy Tells AU Africa Is ‘hostage’ Of Russia’s War In Ukraine by Thinkfree(m): 6:58pm On Jun 20, 2022
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Africa is being held “hostage” by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has spurred fears of a food crisis on the continent.

Moscow’s offensive has seen it blockade Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, preventing the country’s grain exports from reaching global markets.
“Africa is actually a hostage. It is a hostage of those who unleashed war against our state,” Zelenskyy said during an address to the African Union delivered via video link.

He added Kyiv was currently engaged in “complex negotiations” to release its ports from Russia’s blockade.

“But there is no progress yet … That is why the global food crisis will continue as long as this colonial war continues,” Zelenskyy said.

Defence ministers from NATO countries and other parts of the world will convene to discuss weapons deliveries to Ukraine on Wednesday.

The meeting comes as Kyiv seeks a significant increase in arms to fight off Russian forces. Ahead of the talks, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said allies would continue to deliver heavy weapons and long-range systems to Ukraine.

Since the Russian invasion on February 24, Ukraine has received billions of dollars’ worth of weapons and military equipment from at least 28 countries.

Twenty-five of the 28 nations providing military assistance to Ukraine are NATO members, including the US and UK, which are supplying Kyiv with sophisticated weapons such as multiple rocket launch systems (MLRS).

Despite its growing arsenal, Ukraine, which has an active military personnel of just 200,000, is significantly outgunned by Russian forces.

Countries who have supplied Ukraine with weapons and military equipment include: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the UK and the US.

These do not include countries providing non-lethal aid or fuel, such as Ireland and Japan.

The military aid sent to Ukraine includes conventional weapons as well as more advanced equipment and weaponry.

Below is a look at the weaponry pledged by some countries, some of which has been delivered and some of which has yet to be sent. It is not an exhaustive list, as some nations keep their transfers secret.

The weapons include artillery, anti-aircraft weapons, anti-tank weapons, armoured vehicles, reconnaissance and attack drones, helicopters, small arms, ammunition and body armour.

Artillery:

Howitzers have been provided by countries such as Estonia and Norway. The US has also pledged M114 155mm howitzers – long-range artillery launchers.

Anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons:

Shoulder-fired MANPAD systems, NLAWs, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Stinger missiles, Javelin anti-tank missiles, MILAN anti-tank guided missiles and Cheetah anti-aircraft missiles are among the weapons pledged to Ukraine.

Armoured vehicles:

The UK has provided Ukraine with Mastiff armoured vehicles which can carry a crew of two plus eight troops. Australia has pledged M113 armoured personnel carriers and Bushmaster protected mobility vehicles, the latter of which can deploy 10 soldiers. T-72 tanks have also been pledged by Poland.

Reconnaissance and attack drones:

Turkish Bayraktar TB2 combat drones, US made Phoenix Ghost tactical drones and Puma Unmanned aerial systems are among the drones pledged to Ukraine.

The Bayraktar drone in particular garnered attention during the war as Ukrainian forces used the weapon to destroy Russian artillery systems and armoured vehicles.

The TB2 has a wingspan of 12 metres and can reach 25,000 feet. It has also been used during conflicts in Syria, Nagorno-Karabakh, Iraq and Libya.

Helicopters:

The US and Czech Republic have sent Ukraine Mi-24 attack helicopters.

Small arms:

A number of countries are sending automatic rifles, machine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, submachine guns, pistols, and ammunition to Ukraine.

Last week, the UK announced that it would give Ukraine M270 multiple-launch rocket systems, which can strike targets up to 80km (50 miles) away.

UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said in a statement, “As Russia’s tactics change, so must our support to Ukraine. These highly capable multiple-launch rocket systems will enable our Ukrainian friends to better protect themselves against the brutal use of long-range artillery, which Putin’s forces have used indiscriminately to flatten cities.”

What weapons has the US provided?
During the Russian invasion, the US has committed at least $54bn in aid for Ukraine, including more than $20bn in military support approved by Congress in May, as well as a number of aid packages approved in March.

On June 1, the Department of Defense announced the authorisation of an eleventh drawdown of equipment from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021, as US President Joe Biden said the US would “continue to provide Ukraine with weapons and equipment to defend itself.”

The DoD package includes:

On June 1, the Biden administration said it would provide Ukraine with high mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS) under the condition that Ukrainian forces not use them to hit targets inside Russian territory.

The M142 HIMARS is a high-tech lightweight rocket launcher that can strike targets at a range of 80km (50 miles). This is almost double the range of the current M777 howitzers, which the US promised to provide earlier.

Foreign Affairs / Russia-ukraine War: List Of Key Events, Day 110 by Thinkfree(m): 8:49pm On Jun 13, 2022
Fighting
Russian forces have blown up a bridge over the Siverskyi Donets River, which links the cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, cutting off a possible evacuation route for civilians, local officials said.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said Russian forces should, in principle, be seeking to seize bridges rather than destroy them since they have struggled to get across the Siverskyi Donets River in the past.

The self-proclaimed officials also celebrated Russia Day on Sunday and began issuing Russian passports to residents in Melitopol, Russian state-owned RIA Novosti news agency said.

Moscow-backed officials are solidifying their hold on occupied territories by installing Russian flags in and around Melitopol and Mariupol, with the sign to the port city’s entrance painted in the Russian flag colours.

Amnesty International accused Russia of war crimes in Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkiv. Hundreds of civilians have been killed in Russian cluster bomb attacks, the rights body said.
Ukraine has uncovered sabotage activities among 50 people in Lysychansk who were leaking Ukraine’s operational information to Russian forces to help Moscow with its offensive, the governor of Luhansk said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Moscow’s tactics had not changed in the war and that poorly-trained Russian reserves were now being deployed in the battle for Donbas, where “every metre” is being fought over.

Diplomacy

Security concerns raised by Turkey in its opposition to Finland and Sweden joining NATO are legitimate, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said during a visit to Finland.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met President Zelenskyy in Kyiv to discuss Ukraine’s candidacy for European Union membership that will be announced by the end of the week.

The risk of nuclear war is higher today than ever since the height of the Cold War, an arms research institute concluded.

The human cost of the war

Zelenskyy claimed Russian casualties since the start of the war may pass 40,000 in June.
The governor of Luhansk said about 500 civilians remain in hiding at the Azot chemical plant in Severodonetsk.

Three people were killed in Lysychansk on Sunday, including a six-year-old boy, and one person was injured, the governor of Luhansk said.
Russian forces’ attacks on a residential area in Kryvyi Rih region of Dnipropetrovsk killed one woman and wounded five peope, the head of the Kryvyi Rih military administration said.
