A Nigerian man accused of obtaining more than 125,000 stolen taxpayer identities from across the United States, has been convicted in federal court in Oregon on 19 counts of mail and wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.

A jury in Medford returned the verdicts, Friday, against Emmanuel Oluwatosin Kazeem, 34, who lived most recently in Bowie, Maryland.

Prosecutors say Kazeem bought over 91,000 of the identities from a Vietnamese hacker who got into a database belonging to an Oregon company called CICS Employment Services.

Most of the personal information were used to file fraudulent tax returns between 2012 and 2015. Over 2,800 fraudulent returns were linked to Kazeem with attempted refunds in excess of $26 million and actual losses to the FG of nearly $7 million.

IRS criminal investigators traced more than 2,000 wire transfers involving $2.1 million dollars in fraudulent tax refunds wired to Nigeria by Kazeem and his co-conspirators, prosecutors said.

Kazeem passed many of the identities to his co-conspirators located in the Atlanta, Georgia, area and Nigeria. Prosecutors submitted evidence that Kazeem had invested more than $190,000 in cash into the recent purchase of a newly constructed home in Maryland.

He also used $175,000 in cash to buy a townhouse in Maryland shortly before his arrest and was in recent negotiations to build a hotel in Lagos, Nigeria. Kazeem is scheduled to be sentenced in Medford on Nov. 8.

Kazeem’s brother, Michael Kazeem, has also pleaded guilty to an indictment and awaits sentencing. Four other members of the gang —, Oluwatobi Rueben Dehinbo, Lateef Aina Animawun, Oluwaseunara Temitope Osanyinbi and Oluwamuyiwa Abolad Olawoye — were earlier indicted by a federal grand jury in May 2015.

At 83% of the polling stations reporting. he got 252, 490 which is 63% while Jackton Ramguma got 141, 320 which represents 36% and Christine Otieno got 1919 representing less than 1% of total votes cast.

With 37, 318 polling stations out of 40883 of the polling stations reporting, President Uhuru Kenyatta is leading his rival, Raila Odinga by 10.1% of the votes cast. At 7, 546, 262 that is 54.57% while Raila Odinga is at 6, 164, 403 at 44.58% of the votes

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said it had recovered over N328.9bn out of N349.8bn debts from nine major petroleum marketers within the last one year.

The EFCC Head of Operation, North West Zone, Kano, Mr Adamu Hamisu-Danmusa, disclosed this while addressing newsmen in Kano on Tuesday. He said the debts, which included legacy/bad debts and current debts, were recovered following report from the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria to the commission.

“The IPMAN reported to the commission that there are some major marketers that connived with NNPC officials and received fuel allocation but refused to pay the money into the Treasury Single Account.

So after investigation, we were able to find out that there is N349.8bn as legacy/bad debts and debts on current transactions. The commission was able to make recoveries of N328.8bn from the nine major marketers from July 2016 to July 2017,” he said.

He said the commission was still making effort to ensure that all the remaining debts were recovered from the marketers and remitted into the FG's Consolidated Account.

Abdulraufu Mustapha, Professor of African Politics at the Department of Government, University of Oxford in the United Kingdom has passed away, his family members have confirmed.

Mustapha the author of Turning Points in African Democracy; and Sects and Social Disorder, Muslim Identities and Conflict in Northern Nigeria succumbed to stomach cancer after battling the disease for months.

He died today around 3pm London time. He was 63. He is survived by his wife, Kate and three children.

15-year-old Safiya Abbas, who recently sustained serious injuries after a chemical poured on her hand during a practical class at Science Secondary School Miga, Taraba state, is set to undergo amputation, Rariya reports.

It was gathered that the school management tried to manage the situation for two days, but when there was no improvement, her parents were contacted and she was taken to the state hospital, where doctors said the only remedy is to have her hand amputated.

The League Management Company, organisers of the Nigeria Professional Football League, has confirm that three fans have been arrested in connection with throwing objects at match officials during the matchday-33 game between Wikki Tourist and Rangers International, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Bauchi.

The suspects are: Mohammed Isa (35), Hamisu Mohammed (30) and Yola Ishaya (24). The LMC revealed that the culprits will be arraigned in court shortly. Ishaya reportedly threw an object at the 2nd assistant ref. The other two attacked match officials while they were being escorted out of the stadium.

Oyintari Michael whose genital was chopped off by his step grandfather during a traditional circumcision at Ondewari Community, Bayelsa State, was flown to India this afternoon, for a reconstructive surgery.

The trip is being sponsored by the Bayelsa State government through the wife of the governor, Rachael Dickson, who took the financial burden of baby Oyintari’s healthcare and issued N6m cheque and other traveling documents to his parents to perform the surgery on him.

Oyintari who was 8months old at the time of the ugly incident, February, 2017, has been in the protective custody of the Bayelsa First Lady and is now 1 year and 2months old.

The police on Tuesday arraigned a popular Ibadan based radio presenter, Mr Oriyomi Hamzat, before Magistrate A. A. Adebisi of the Oyo State Magistrate court sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan over allegation of murdering a 17-year old boy.

The 37 years old Hamzat was docked alongside four others; 27 years old Idowu Ibrahim, 31 years old Mohammed Bashir, 23 years old Taiwo olaronke and 23 years old Yusuff Toyeeb Ajisafe.

The five suspects were arraigned at the Magistrate Court 3 on a two-count c‎harge bordering on conspiracy and murder.

Hamzat was arrested by the State’s police command after the body of the boy was found in his car. The deceased was an orphan being raised in an unregistered orphanage home, allegedly belonging to the suspect.

The prosecutor, Mr Sunday Fatola, alleged that Hamzat and other defendants on July 21, 2017, at about 4am, conspired together to commit murder and unlawfully caused the death of a boy identified as Peter, by inflicting an injury on his head and body.

Magistrate A.A. Adebisi, after the pleas were taken, ordered the defendants to be remanded in Agodi Prison pending the legal advice from the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) and adjourned the case till September 5, 2017.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old father of five, who allegedly beat his girlfriend to death over suspected infidelity, on the deceased’s birthday, July 28.

It was gathered that the deceased, identified simply as Happiness, visited her lover’s home at 5/7 Michael Osisipi Street, off Banjo Oyewele Street, Ago Palace Way, from where they went to a club around the area to celebrate her birthday.

Trouble, as gathered, started after the suspect, Victor Umeh, sighted Happiness discussing with a man, discovered to be her former boyfriend. The discussion, according to Umeh, a trader at Ladipo Market, lasted over 15 minutes.

He reportedly left the club in anger, leaving the deceased behind. Time was 12.45a.m. On realising that Umeh had left, Happiness went to his house, where an argument that degenerated into a fight ensued.

Her shout for help alerted neighbours. On reaching Umeh’s flat, he was reportedly seen trying to hide a substance, which turned out to be late Happiness’ mobile telephone.

The curious neighbours were said to have searched the flat for the victim, only to discover her lifeless body behind Umeh’s window. Policemen at Ago Division were immediately contacted and Umeh was arrested.

Investigation revealed that the incident happened during the period Umeh’s wife and five children travelled to his village in Anambra State.

Two fake blind beggars have been arrested by the policemen attached to the Imo State University, Owerri. Their arrest followed intelligence information given to the police by some students of the institution.

A student leader, Chidi Onyeji, told Southern City News that the fake blind men were apprehended by the police at the main gate of the varsity. He said, “The policemen have uncovered swindle activities of a particular group who devise unlawful means to attract sympathy and rip off kind-hearted students of their hard-earned money under the pretext of being blind.”

According to Onyeji, luck ran out on the suspects when one of the policemen called one of the beggars, and on approaching, the cop slapped him and asked him to open his eyes.

He explained that upon interrogation, the two fake blind persons confessed to the crime, saying they took to the crime to make ends meet because they were unemployed.

The suspects had been transferred to the state Police Command in Owerri, where they were being interrogated.

3 Nigerian nationals and a Vietnamese have been arrested in Phnom Penh for residing in the country illegally and running online scams. They are: Maduabuchukwu Ajaere, Nwabueze Daniel, Nwabueze Odiwomma and Dang Thi Tien.

They have been sent to the immigration department for processing.
