Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has commissioned the first cooperative financial institution, KWACOFOCUS Micro Finance Bank (MFB) in Ilorin to provide more access to credit for farmers and small business owners in the state.

Ahmed, while speaking at the occasion, said his government had ensured inclusive financial system to grow and expand businesses in the state.

He said the financial assistance was providing existing businesses with access to capital at single digit interest rate.

He pointed out that in spite of relevance of funding to business, his government holds the agricultural sector in high esteem owing to the potential of the sector to create employment and generate revenue through investment opportunities in the agricultural value chain.

The governor urged members of the public, especially the youth to take advantage of the services of the bank and access funding to grow their businesses.

In her address, chairman, Board of Directors of the bank, Hajia Zururat Romoke Zubair, said the financial institution was set up to complement the effort of the government in the areas of agric development and sustainable empowerment for rural farmers, financial inclusion for rural women and youths, support for the growth and development of small scale businesses and easy accessibility to finance.

She said 80 per cent of the bank's credit had been earmarked for agricultural cooperative societies and urged farmers and small scale business owners to partner with it.

A lethal terrorist strike by Boko Haram members in the north-eastern part of the country has claimed several lives on civilians.

Attacks by suicide bombers in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Tuesday claimed 23 lives, the state Police Commissioner, Damien Chukwu, said on Wednesday.

Among those killed were 12 members of the Civilian JTF and the four suicide bombers who carried out the attacks. The commissioner, who briefed journalists at one of the scenes of the multiple attacks, stated that 23 other persons were injured in the attacks.

Chukwu said, “Twelve Civilian JTF members were killed in all the attacks and the rest were civilian victims.”

He lamented that the seven civilians were killed when they gathered to mourn the death of the 12 Civilian JTF operatives. He said, “The suicide bombers attacked the crowd of mourners, killing seven of them and leaving many injured.”

The Civilian JTF spokesman, Danbatta Bello, told journalists that the bombers targeted his colleagues on duty.

Bello said, “A teenage female suicide bomber actually crept to the sandbag post of our boys at Molai and before they could realise what was happening, she detonated the explosives on her body and killed three of our boys on guard.”

He said the incident happened simultaneously with another at a tea vendor’s joint where __“seven of our members who took their time off to eat their dinner were killed.”

He added, “Another one happened not far away from where the first blast took place which killed one of our operatives trying to stop her. The fourth blast that happened at Jiddumeri also took the life of one of our operatives as well.

“We lost 12 of our operatives in all.”

The Kwara Youth Stakeholders Forum (KYSF) has threatened to recall Senate President Bukola Saraki over the continuous face-off between the National Assembly and the Federal Government.

In a statement by its president, Charles Olufemi Folayan, the group regretted that the rancour was coming from stalwarts of same political party.

Labelling Saraki’s stewardship as unimpressive, KYSF worries that bills of public interest such as Local Government Autonomy Bill, Audit Bill including first-line charge for Auditor General for the Federation, Bill for Special Anti corruption Court, among others were yet to receive adequate attention from the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

The statement reads: “We are disturbed by the frequent face-off between the Senate and the executive arm of government which is affecting the whole nation and requires the attention of all Nigerians, considering its adverse effect on the masses.

“We are cognisant of the separation of powers in a democratic setting, but it is shocking to see the legislative and executive arms of government formed by the same political party playing opposition between themselves in the name of separation of power.”

Meanwhile, the suspended member representing Bebeji/Kiru Federal Constituency of Kano State in the House of Representatives, Abdulmumini Jibrin Kofa, is at the verge of losing his representation at the lower chamber.

Hundreds of constituents are also collecting signatures to commence his recall.

One of the arrowheads, Salele Bushasha during a rally at Agric Show Ground in Bebeji Local Council of the state, said: “ We have compiled all necessary documents and we are heading to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the 30th of this month to officially kick-start the process.”

He hinged their decision on the lawmaker’s alleged disrespect to the leaderships of the All Progressives Congress and National Assembly.

“Instead of him to go back and beg for his reinstatement at the House, he leaves our representation as vacant as it appears, “ he lamented.

Who doesn’t eat yam? If not fried or roasted, then boiled or pounded and several other forms in which one can eat yam. Even the yam peels are useful for other purposes. So, going into the yam business in Nigeria is a very profitable one since there are more than one ways in which it can be utilized.

Now you’ve gotten your farm location, you need to prepare the land for the yam seeds that would be planted. If the land is overgrown, then clear it and leave the weeds to dry up on the land. The best months for planting yam are February and April, the months when the rainy season starts. These should also be the months you prepare the land.

Once the land had been cleared, you can now prepare the heap or ridge beds. Whichever one you use, it should be one meter high and one meter apart, and all beds must be built in line with the land’s contour to mitigate erosion.

Preparing your Setts
Sets are simply the yam ‘seeds’ to be planted. These are small pieces of the yam tuber, like the heat sett, the middle sett and the tail sett, including a whole tuber, it depends on the size of the sett. You should get your setts from healthy yam tubers.

The cut sets should be treated with ash or fungicide and then aire dried. Once this is done, you can either pre-sprout the setts or plant directly. Pre-sprouting is advised to reduce wedding and give you assurance that the setts would grow.

Planting Time
White yam is usually planted between march and April depending on when setts are sprouted or when rainy season actually begins in that area. One hectare of land can accommodate between 20,000to 27,000 setts. Both pre-sprouted and non-pre-sprouted setts are planted at about the same time and in the same way.

Weeding
Hopefully, you won’t weed the yam farm more than two or three times before harvest, depending on if you planted pre-sprouted or non-pre-sprouted setts orif the farmland was mulched or not.

Harvesting
You know it’s time to harvest your yams when the leaves and stalk start getting yellow or begin drying up. This usually occurs as from November and up to February the following year. Your commercial tubers will be harvested at theearly stages even before yellowing and drying up. While the tubers to be made into setts will be harvested much more later.

Now you’re ready to go to the market and literally reap the fruits of your labour. Yam sells fast as there is almost no one who doesn’t have some yam connection.

In most cases, beans farming doesn’t require fertilizer especially if the quality of the soil is quite good in terms of fertility. In the case of a poor soil, the fertilizer can be applied to the soil. The ideal fertilizer for beans farming is the nitrogen type. The application should be moderate. Excessive application can reduce the quantity of the beans yield.

3. Planting
The beans should be planted with the eye of the beans facing downwards. The seeds should be planted 4 to 6″ apart. You should water the soil immediately and continue to water it regular until it sprouts.

When watering the plant, ensure the leaves don’t get wet, this will prevent mould growth. You shouldn’t plant the seeds at the same spot more than once every four years. Also, beans shouldn’t be planted close to onions.

After planting, you need to take care of the plant to enable a favourable harvest. Proper weeding is necessary to produce the right quality of plant. Also, you have to be careful how you uproot the weeds so that you don’t disturb the roots of the bean plant.

The plant grows either as bush or poletype. The bush beans begin producing before the pole and the seeds come out all at once. This is why you can stagger your planting so that you can have a continuous yield over a period of time. On the other hand, the pole beans will continue to produce for up to 2 months. You may need to help your pole beans adapt to the initial climb. However, you should keep the plant well watered. You can also improve the yield of the pole beans by adding compost or manure midway through the growing season.


4. Harvesting
Harvesting beans is a very diligent process. A dry weather is very essential for harvest and will prolong the dry conditions and extreme wetness is harmful to the crop.

Generally, harvest is done by gently pulling the bean from the vine or by snapping it off the vine end. It takes 60 to 80 days after planting before you can begin harvesting. Harvesting is dependent on several factors, the 2 most important are the type of growth and the stage of growth.

Based on the stage of growth, the beans are harvested at the snap, shell or dry stage.

The snap beans are harvested when the seeds are still quite still immature. A problem with harvesting at the snap stage is that this type of beans doesn’t develop the proper flavor and texture. However the best way to determine the suitability of the beans for harvest at this stage is by harvesting one or two pods to ascertain the quality before going into full scale harvest. The best indicator of snap beans is the diameter of their pods. The ideal diameter is between 1/4 – 1/8 “. You can choose to allow your snap beans to develop into dry beans before you harvest.

The shell beans are harvested at a later time compared to the snap beans. Once the enclosed seeds become quite obvious, the beans can be harvested. The beans can be eaten fresh or dried.

The dry beans are harvested when the seeds have reached complete maturity.. The dry beans should be grown in plenty of space and ventilation. If during the harvest period, there’s a spell of rain, you can remove the plants from the ground and hang it upside down to allow drying to continue. The process of harvest requires threshing to remove the extraneous pod materials.


Overall, if you harvest beans early, you may not get the right flavor and texture. On the other hand, if you leave it too late, the beans can become overgrown and tough. However, you will tend to understand your plant as you continue to cultivate the crop.
