Politics / Reno Omokri Has Urged Tinubu To Ban Sport Betting App In Nigeria by thisweekng: 3:54pm On Jan 04

In a surprising turn of events, political activist Reno Omokri has called on Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, The President of Nigeria, to issue an Executive Order authorizing the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ban sports betting apps. Omokri's plea is grounded in the belief that such a ban could rapidly improve the economic conditions of a significant portion of Nigerians and contribute to the strengthening of the Naira.

Omokri argues that the pervasive gambling culture in Nigeria is wreaking havoc on the nation's youth, leading to a surge in petty crimes. He contends that many young individuals, desperate for funds to sustain their gambling habits, resort to criminal activities as a means to an end. By eradicating the root cause—sports betting apps—Omokri believes the government can tackle both economic challenges and the rise in delinquency simultaneously.

Politics / Tinubu Picks Dr Akindele Egbuwalo As Acting CEO Of NSIPA by thisweekng: 2:25pm On Jan 02
In a significant development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light for a leadership change at the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA). Dr. Akindele Egbuwalo has been appointed as the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and National Coordinator, succeeding Halima Shehu.

The decision to replace Shehu stems from allegations of corruption and financial malfeasance during her tenure. President Tinubu took swift action to suspend Shehu, who assumed office in October 2023 following her confirmation by the Senate on October 18, 2023.

Dr. Egbuwalo steps into the role from his previous position as the National N-Power Programme manager. His appointment is seen as an interim measure, pending the outcome of the investigation into the allegations against Shehu.

The National Social Investment Programme is a critical initiative aimed at alleviating poverty and promoting social inclusion across Nigeria. With the change in leadership, the focus now turns to how Egbuwalo will steer the agency through this transitional phase and address any issues that may have led to the suspension of his predecessor.

President Tinubu’s decision underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability in public service. The move sends a strong signal that allegations of corruption will not be tolerated, even at the highest levels of government.

The appointment of Egbuwalo, with his background in managing the N-Power Programme, is seen as a strategic move to ensure continuity and expertise in the crucial area of social investment.

The suspension of Halima Shehu, just months after her confirmation, raises questions about the vetting process for key government appointments. It also highlights the challenges faced by leaders in maintaining the integrity of their administrations.

As Dr. Egbuwalo assumes his new role, the public awaits updates on the progress of the investigation into Shehu and anticipates the measures that will be taken to strengthen the National Social Investment Programme. The outcome of this transition will likely shape the public’s perception of the government’s commitment to combating corruption and delivering on its social investment promises.

Eyewitnesses reported that the unruly riders, who were maneuvering one way in reckless disregard for traffic laws, hastily dismounted from their bikes and scattered into nearby alleys as the governor's convoy approached. The daring act prompted swift action from the security detail accompanying the governor.

Politics / LP Will Be Nigeria’s Opposition Party In 2024 — Peter Obi by thisweekng: 6:29pm On Jan 01
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, on Monday said his party, in 2024, will adjust to a new role as Nigeria’s main opposition party.
Obi, in his New Year Message, said LP will remain firmly in opposition and keep the All Progressives Congress (APC) on its toes to protect the interest of Nigerians.

The former Governor of Anambra State said, “As Nigeria is the only country we have, deeply endowed but lacking good leadership over the years, we will continue to seek a new Nigeria that we know is possible.”

According to him, a new Nigeria is possible despite the numerous yet-to-be-fulfilled aspirations of citizens.

Expressing his heartfelt and warmest greetings to all Nigerians, Obi prayed to God to bless them richly and grant them good heart desires in the new year and beyond.

Obi said: “The events of the past year are now part of our national history. As we trudge on, we remain mindful of the state of our nation and that our best hopes and aspirations remain largely unfulfilled.

“Peace and security continue to elude us with the rising level of bloodletting deeply troubling and sometimes beyond a war situation.

“A situation where hundreds of Nigerians are violently killed in December alone is deeply sad and unacceptable.

“While we pray for the repose of the souls departed, we demand that the Federal Government must do whatever is required to bring the perpetrators to justice and permanently stop a reoccurrence in any part of Nigeria.”

He noted that the nation’s economy needed a turnaround, considering the rising unemployment, inflation, poverty, inequality, and other key socioeconomic variables.

Obi said, “Nigerians are now very aware and convinced that good governance, inclusive development, and accountable leadership expected in a functional democracy continue to elude us.

“But we must be consistent and resolute in our demand for the rule of law, regulatory quality, and government effectiveness for transformative solutions to a litany of our social problems.

“If there is one fundamental threat to our democracy, it is the undermining and weakening of our national institutions and the capture of state affairs and resources by few individuals and private interests.

“This must stop for Nigeria to move forward and function as an inclusive and sustainable society and nation.”

According to him, in a democratic and secular country like ours, there must be full respect for the separation of powers between the three independent arms of government, as well as between the federating units.

He said the National Assembly should devote time and commit itself to the diligent performance of its functions, like the 2024 budget, which required its prudent examination and subsequent patriotic-oriented approval or rejection.

Obi said the nation must work assiduously to avoid drifting to a one-party state or a situation where the Federal Government intervened unduly in the internal affairs of the states, particularly in circumstances where national security is not threatened.

He added, “We in the Labour Party have undertaken in the national interest and in our undying commitment to a New Nigeria that is possible, to remain firmly in opposition and, as such, must remain focused going forward.

“Our collective role in nation-building remains fundamental and obligatory.”

He used the opportunity to thank all Nigerians who supported his campaign during the 2023 elections and voted for his party because of their belief in the quest for a New Nigeria.

Obi said the outcome of the 2023 presidential elections was contested and remained so, on record, “but the Courts of law have spoken; so be it.”

He said, “I wish to thank members of the Labour Party, the Obidient Family, friends, and well-wishers of Nigeria for their loyalty, resilience, tenacity, and commitment to true democracy.

“We will continue ongoing discussions and efforts for the Labour Party to adjust to our new role as Nigeria’s main opposition party.

“We will continue to constructively engage all Nigerians and our friends, who have now realised the vast implications of the road not taken; and the folly of national interest decisions predicated on sentiments and primordial interests.”

Obi said that Nigeria remained a God-given country and that the business of Nigeria was far too important to be left to those involved in transactional politics.

He said, “I am involved in the struggle for a New Nigeria that is possible and works for all and will remain passionately committed to the crusade.

“I, therefore, implore you all who strive for a New Nigeria to remain fully engaged, committed and resilient as it is and will be possible.”

Business / Nigeria To Begin To Supply Gas To South Africa From 2024 by thisweekng: 8:41am On Dec 27, 2023
In a groundbreaking move, Riverside LNG, a prominent Nigerian energy company, has disclosed ongoing discussions regarding a potential agreement to supply gas to South Africa starting from the first quarter of 2024. This development marks the initiation of what could be the first-ever gas deal between Nigeria and South Africa, signaling a potential collaboration in the energy sector.

CEO David Ige, in an exclusive interview in Abuja, revealed the company’s strategic focus on expanding its reach across the continent. Earlier this year, Riverside LNG formalized a gas-export partnership with Johannes Schuetze Energy Import AG of Germany, demonstrating its commitment to international collaborations.

“We’d probably very early in the year close out another segment of the market, an off-take for South Africa,” Ige stated.

“There’s a massively evolving gas market in the region, covering southern Africa, western Africa, all to northwest Europe and to the Caribbean and South America broadly.”

While emphasizing the confidentiality of ongoing discussions, Ige refrained from providing specific details about the negotiations with South African counterparts. The company is simultaneously exploring potential opportunities in Liberia and Cameroon, further solidifying its position as a key player in the African energy landscape.

Strategic Implications for South Africa: Addressing Power Shortages and Embracing Renewables

Key Considerations:

South Africa’s persistent power shortages due to ageing and inadequately maintained power stations managed by Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd.
Delays in procuring extra electricity from private providers due to grid constraints and legal disputes.
Lack of an LNG facility in South Africa; deliveries from the Riverside LNG project expected to start in 2027.
Shifting towards renewable energy sources with a goal to achieve 60 gigawatts of power from renewables by 2030.
Regional Dynamics:

Southern African Development Community endorses a $17 billion plan for natural gas infrastructure to enhance energy provisions in the region.
Investments in pipelines and terminals for both local and imported supplies.
Riverside LNG’s potential gas supply deal with South Africa aligns with the nation’s efforts to diversify its energy sources, moving away from coal dependence. With 80% of electricity production currently reliant on coal, South Africa aims to achieve a significant portion of its power from renewables by 2030.

CEO David Ige emphasized the broader opportunities for Nigeria, stating, “We see a huge opportunity for Nigeria in being a trading hub.” The evolving gas market in the region presents a strategic advantage for Nigeria to position itself as a pivotal player in the global energy trade.

Business / Arthur Eze To Become Richer After Securing Oil Deal In Uganda, Details Emerge by thisweekng: 8:31am On Dec 27, 2023
In a recent development, Oranto Petroleum Ltd (OPL), owned by Prince Arthur Eze and his royal family from the Kingdom of Dunukofia, has successfully obtained a two-year extension on its oil exploration license in Uganda. This extension, granted by the Ugandan government, is viewed as compensation for the time lost during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement of the extension permit came through an official email statement, as confirmed by Solomon Muyita, the spokesperson for the Uganda Energy Ministry. The government of Uganda emphasized that this extension aligns with its strategy to enhance recoverable oil, which currently stands at 1.4 billion barrels.

As part of the terms of the extension, the production sharing agreement, royalties, cost of recovery, and profit sharing have been outlined, contributing to the broader framework of the collaboration between Oranto Petroleum Ltd and the Ugandan government.

Prince Arthur Eze’s company originally secured the license for the Ngassa Deep and Ngassa Shallow contract areas in 2017, with the initial expiration date set for December 20, 2023.

During the extension signing ceremony, Ruth Nankabirwa, Uganda’s energy minister, conveyed her expectations for Oranto Petroleum Ltd to maximize the additional time and ensure a successful outcome. She stressed the significance of the extension, highlighting its potential contribution to increasing Uganda’s oil volumes.

Uganda, presently holding a reserve of six billion barrels of oil, anticipates leveraging this extension to enhance its oil production capabilities. Of the total reserves, 1.4 billion barrels are considered retrievable, making this collaboration with Oranto Petroleum Ltd a crucial aspect of Uganda’s oil sector strategy.

Abdul Byakagaba, the general manager of OPL, expressed the company’s commitment to completing the scheduled work program within the specified two-year period. This commitment aligns with their dedication to advancing Uganda’s oil exploration and production objectives.

In conclusion, the extension of Oranto Petroleum Ltd’s exploration license marks a significant development in the collaboration between the Nigerian oil company and the Ugandan government. This extension not only serves as compensation for pandemic-induced delays but also positions Oranto Petroleum Ltd as a key player in Uganda’s efforts to optimize its oil production capabilities. The next two years will be crucial in determining the success of this collaboration and its impact on Uganda’s oil industry.

Specifically, travelers departing from Abuja and heading to destinations in the North, such as Gombe, Bauchi, Yola, and Maiduguri, have been transported to their destinations at only half the regular transport fares for each leg of their journey.

The statement said, “As ALBON co-opts NURTW, implementing 50% discount on transport fares at yuletide gets a boost, 128 Nigerians enjoy Tinubu’s Renewed Hope discount on Christmas Day.

“Implementing the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s for 50% discount on transport fares for Nigerians during the yuletide got a serious boost especially as one hundred and twenty-eight travellers from Abuja, who were bound for destinations in the North – Gombe, Bauchi, Yola and Maiduguri were freighted to their destinations paying only half of the transport fares charged for each of their destinations, as monitored by Federal Ministry of Transportation Situation Room Monitoring Team on Christmas Day.

“Thanks to the proactive efforts of the Association of Luxury Bus Owners, travellers were able to enjoy a significant reduction in their transportation costs, with Clement Okuefuna overseeing the disbursement of the reimbursements at the Area 1 motor park in Abuja.

“Notably, ALBON’s collaboration with the National Union of Road Transport Workers has effectively ensured that passengers are promptly refunded half of their fare payments upon boarding designated vehicles, thereby making the President’s transport palliative a reality.”

“The last 16-seater passenger bus which loaded, got its passenger refunded half of the transport fares paid back to them and heading for Bauchi and Maiduguri rounded off the operation at Area 1 Motor Park, Abuja,” the statement added.

SaharaReporters had reported that President Tinubu approved a 50 percent reduction in the prices of inter-state transport fares for Nigerians travelling during the Yuletide from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024.

It also reported that the President approved free rides for commuters on all train services within the period.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development and Chairman of the inter-ministerial committee on presidential intervention, Dele Alake, had announced the administration’s gesture to State House Correspondents at the Aso Rock Villa.

Politics / Peter Obi Condemns Nationwide Violence, Extends Sympathy To Victims by thisweekng: 9:35am On Dec 26, 2023
Addressing Recent Incidents in Anambra, Plateau, Zamfara, and Katsina States, Peter Obi Advocates for Our Security Operatives

In a recent Twitter statement, Peter Obi, the former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has broken his silence on the tragic incident that unfolded in Oba, Anambra State. The incident involved a ruthless attack on a nightclub by unidentified gunmen, resulting in multiple fatalities.

Obi’s decision to comment on the Oba incident was linked to his broader concern for the escalating violence across Nigeria. The former Presidential candidate expressed his condolences and addressed the recent massacre in Plateau State on Christmas Day. He tweeted, “As we celebrate this season of peace and love and the approach of a new year, I like to spare a thought for our compatriots in uniform.”

During a sympathy visit to the Regent of Oba Community, Obi condemned the “horrific killing of people in a nightclub” in the community. Furthermore, he highlighted the “mindless act of terrorism” in Plateau State, where the death toll has reportedly surpassed 100, with over 300 injured.

Obi extended his concerns to include other regions affected by violence, specifically mentioning Zamfara and Kastina States, where farmers were killed, and numerous others were kidnapped. He emphasized that many such incidents might go unreported, underscoring the severity of the security crisis.

The former Presidential candidate directed his attention to the security operatives, acknowledging their sacrifices and the risks they face daily. He expressed gratitude to the gallant troops, policemen, Civil Defense Corps, and Department of State Security operatives who serve on the front lines of insecurity.

In his statement, Obi remarked, “Great nations are built by rulers, citizens, and the protectors of freedom.” He called on the nation to collectively appreciate and acknowledge the efforts of those safeguarding the country’s freedom, especially during the festive season when many are away from their homes.

Obi’s message extended condolences to the families affected by the acts of violence, recognizing the challenging times faced by the nation. He noted that the level of insecurity, violence, and loss of human lives surpassed even some countries in declared wars.

In conclusion, Peter Obi urged continued prayers for the nation’s healing, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to address the pervasive security challenges faced by Nigeria.

Peter Obi Said, “

As we celebrate this season of peace and love and the approach of a new year, I like to spare a thought for our compatriots in uniform. After my sympathy visit to the Regent of Oba Community in Anambra State for the recent horrific killing of people in a nightclub in that

community; plus the mindless act of terrorism that occurred on Christmas Day in Plateau State, where the death toll is now reportedly more than 100 with over 300 injured; with the saddening acts of violence that have occurred in Zamfara and Kastina States, where farmers were killed and several others kidnapped, and the many other violent attacks in many parts of the country, which may go unreported; my thoughts went to our overstretched security operatives. The men and women of our armed and security services come to mind.

They are our gallant troops in various battlefronts of insecurity, the policemen and women on patrol in our cities and highways, the Civil Defense Corps, and Department of State Security operatives. These illustrious citizens are often lost in our thoughts and prayers both as leaders and fellow citizens, yet they remain the guardians and protectors of our freedom as a people. I am also thinking of those who in the call of duty have to spend this festive season away from the comfort of their homes and the embrace of loved ones.

I am referring to those who face the risk of the supreme sacrifice to protect and defend the freedom of our dear nation and the liberties that come with our democracy. Let us spare them our thoughts and prayers this season. Let them be reassured that their labours are appreciated by a grateful nation. Great nations are built by rulers, citizens, and the protectors of freedom. Therefore, to all our illustrious heroes, please accept the prayers and thoughts of your compatriots and the appreciation of a grateful nation for your services and sacrifices. God bless you all for what you do for us all.

And to all the families who have lost their loved ones to these acts of violence, do accept my sincere condolences. These are very challenging times in our nation.
Even some countries in open declared wars have not experienced this level of insecurity, violence, and loss of human lives. Let us continue to pray for our nation that God will heal our land

Politics / Emefiele Speaks On Accusation Of Opening 593 Foreign Bank Accounts by thisweekng: 12:25am On Dec 25, 2023
The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has refuted claims that he opened 593 foreign bank accounts.
Emefiele stated this in a statement on Sunday titled, “Re; Emefiele, other stole billions, illegally kept Nigeria’s funds in foreign banks” in response to the publication of the report of the Private Investigator into the affairs of the CBN, Jim Obazee.

In the leaked report, Obazee claimed that Emefiele opened 593 accounts in different parts of the world and bought three commercial banks in the country.

But according to the statement, Emefiele said he is not involved in the opening of the foreign accounts and he does not have knowledge of their openings.

The former CBN Governor asserted that fixed deposits in those foreign accounts are definitely outside his knowledge, adding that the relevant departments of the CBN have the authority to carry out such activities in line with their lawful mandate within the apex bank.

Emefiele, therefore, demanded a thorough and transparent investigation of the alleged frauds and has asked lawyers to immediately commence a legal process to clear my name from the defamatory statements contained in the report.

He said: “The final issue that I will like to respond to is the issue of the 593 accounts which were purportedly opened in different parts of the world. I state categorically that I am not involved in the opening of these accounts and I do not have knowledge of their openings. The fixed deposits in those foreign accounts are definitely outside my knowledge.

“However, let me state clearly, that the relevant departments of the CBN have the authority to carry out such activities in line with their lawful mandate within the CBN.

“I therefore join well-meaning Nigerians who have spoken on this matter and have demanded a thorough and transparent investigation of all these alleged frauds.

“Meanwhile, I have instructed my lawyers to immediately commence the legal process to clear my name from the defamatory statements contained in the report and by extension the publications.”

Politics / Emefiele Denies Allegations Reveals Who Approved Naira Redesign Policy by thisweekng: 11:35pm On Dec 24, 2023
The ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, countered claims made by the Private Investigator, Jim Obazee, asserting that former President Muhammadu Buhari sanctioned the Naira redesign initiative. Emefiele addressed this in response to a report titled “Re; Emefiele, others stole billions, illegally kept Nigeria’s funds in foreign banks,” issued by Obazee on Sunday.

Obazee’s report contended that there was no official presidential approval for the Naira redesign program and suggested that the policy was introduced to Buhari through a former presidential aide, Sabiu Tunde, without the endorsement of the CBN board.

Emefiele contradicted these claims, stating that the presidential approval for the Naira redesign was personally presented to Obazee in the presence of senior CBN officials and members of the Investigator’s team. He further asserted that many of the allegations levied against him in Obazee’s report are untrue, misleading, and are intended to tarnish his reputation for the investigator’s own gain.

In essence, Emefiele is refuting the allegations made in the investigative report, emphasizing that there was proper presidential approval for the Naira redesign program and challenging the credibility of the claims against him as an attempt to damage his character.

He said: “After my release on bail from the correctional centre, Kuje, my attention was drawn to publications released by the Punch Newspaper and Premium Times online news platforms.

“The sources of the information published by both media houses were credited to a certain report prepared by Mr. Jim Obazee, who was appointed by the President as a private investigator.
“I have gone through the publications, and I say boldly that the contents of the said publications are false, misleading and calculated to disparage my person, injure my character and to serve the selfish interest of the private investigator.

“Because of my present situation, I have been advised by my lawyers not to say anything in respect of the matters which have been submitted to the court for adjudication. However, I need to address some of the issues raised in the publication which are barefaced lies told by the investigator in order to achieve his satanic agenda.

“First, it was reported that, contrary to the provision of the CBN Act 2007, there was no presidential approval for the Naira redesign. I wish to state unequivocally that there was indeed a presidential approval, and the said approval was handed over to the same Jim Obazee during the process of his investigation in the presence of senior CBN officials and his own investigative team.

“Moreover, former President Muhammadu Buhari has stated on a number of occasions that he authorised and approved the Naira redesign. I am therefore at a loss as to why Mr. Jim Obazee will mislead Nigerians that there was no presidential approval.”

Politics / Reno Fires Back At Peter Obi Over Criticism Of Tinubu’s Transport Policy by thisweekng: 12:08pm On Dec 22, 2023
In a recent development, Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has aimed Peter Obi, the Former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, following Obi’s criticism of President Tinubu’s Yuletide 50% Transportation Fare Reduction Policy. Obi asserted that an investigation he conducted revealed insufficient communication with transporters nationwide, raising questions about the policy’s fairness and efficacy.

Obi argued that for such a policy to yield positive results, it should have been implemented inclusively, with thorough consideration of the challenges faced by transport companies across the nation. This critique prompted a response from Reno Omokri, who questioned Obi’s tendency to undermine positive initiatives.

“Why can’t he, for once, be appreciative of something good?” Omokri questioned. He went on to label Obi’s characterization of President Tinubu’s efforts as a “spin to curry favour” as unjustified. Omokri expressed surprise at Obi’s reluctance to acknowledge the positive aspects of the Yuletide transportation policy, including the free railway ride for Nigerians.

Omokri further highlighted the confirmation from private sector transport operators, some operating in Anambra and known to Obi personally, who have endorsed and begun implementing the policy. This endorsement, according to Omokri, adds credibility to the effectiveness of the fare reduction measures.

The former presidential aide also raised concerns about Obi and his party’s seemingly negative disposition towards positive developments in Nigeria. Omokri questioned why they appear content only when bad things occur in the country, expressing a fear that they might resort to sponsoring activities detrimental to the nation’s economy and security to satisfy their negative narrative.

“It seems all they know how to do is raise false alarms with fake statistics and then threaten, insult, and abuse when right-thinking Nigerians refuse to buy into their delusions,” Omokri remarked.

The exchange between Omokri and Obi underscores the ongoing tension between political figures, with each side asserting its perspective on the effectiveness and fairness of government policies. As Nigeria navigates complex challenges, the public remains watchful of the discourse surrounding key initiatives and the impact they have on the nation’s well-being.

Read what Reno wrote:

Rather than Peter Obi to call President Bola Tinubu’s free railway ride for Nigerians and 50% slash in transport costs for the Yuletide a “spin to curry favour”, why can’t he, for once, be appreciative of something good? Where is Peter Obi’s own spin to curry favour with Nigerians, other than his constant lies and fake statistics?

At least the private sector transport operators, including some who operate in Anambra and are personally known to Peter Obi, have confirmed the deal and are already implementing it.

Why are Peter Obi and his Arise Peoples Party only happy when bad things happen in Nigeria and sad when good occurs? At the rate they are going, one hopes they will not start sponsoring people to sabotage our economy and security just to have something negative to be happy about.

All he and his Arise Peoples Party, plus his Obidients, know how to do is raise false alarms with fake statistics and then threaten, insult and abuse when right-thinking Nigerians refuse to buy into their delusions.
