The Nigerian Senate has screened and confirmed the immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, for a ministerial position to be announced later.

Recall that President Tinubu sent the list of 28 ministerial nominees to the Senate on Thursday, July 27, through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, with some expected and surprise names making the cut.

The Senate finally commenced the screening of the nominees today, Monday, July 31.

After reading out his curriculum vitae (CV), Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, asked Wike if he would take on the same passion he governed Rivers and replicate the same when given the opportunity to serve in the ministerial position.

Wike replied in the affirmative.

After a series of commendations by senators at the chamber, Wike was asked to take a bow and was confirmed fit for the ministerial appointment.

The immediate past Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has arrived at the National Assembly complex in Abuja for the screening as a Minister following his nomination by President Bola Tinubu.

Wike was one of the 28 persons in the list submitted to the National Assembly last week Thursday by President Tinubu.

Though Wike is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he worked for the victory of President Tinubu who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last general election due to disagreements with his own party.

There is currently anxiety among political stakeholders and concerned Nigerians as the Senate begin the screening of the 28 ministerial nominees forwarded to it by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last week.

Naija News had reported that President Tinubu, through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, presented the much anticipated ministerial nominee list to Senate President Godswill Akpabio last week Thursday.

President Tinubu sent the list on Thursday to beat the 60-day constitutional deadline of July 28.

Though the Nigerian leader had noted in his letter to the Senate that a supplementary list of ministerial nominees should be expected.

Nominees who will be awarded different portfolios are usually drawn from across every state of the federation.

However, the list already sent to the Senate for screening was said to be drawn from 25 states only, comprising four former governors, six former federal lawmakers, two former lawmakers, three serving presidential advisers, and seven women, among others.

Ahead of the screening, the federal government had asked the nominees to complete their documentation at the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President at the National Assembly complex between Friday and Monday (today) to enable them to undergo the exercise.

On its part, the Nigerian Senate has assured a transparent approach in the screening of the ministerial nominees.

Speaking to journalists earlier, the Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, boasted that Nigerians would not be disappointed with how it would conduct the screening.

“This time, the screening will be very thorough. It is not going to be a situation where the screening will be anyhow. We are going to know the background of the nominees, and we are not going to disappoint Nigerians. It is not going to be a shallow screening. You must have character; you must have the face; you must have the behaviour to be among the cabin crew to fly Nigeria. This time around, Nigeria is going to be better,” Adaramodu said.

It is speculated that the screening for which the Senate shifted its annual recess may take a minimum of three days.

Naija News understands that the 109-member Senate is expected to grill the nominees on the value they will add to governance if confirmed.

Among those to be screened include the immediate past governors of Rivers State, Nyewom Wike and Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State.

Tragedy struck on Sunday when 15 persons were reportedly burnt to death after a tanker exploded at Ore, Odigbo Local government area, Ondo State.

According to a source in the area, said the explosion occurred when the fuel was ignited by a spark from a phone held by one of the people who was scooping fuel that spilled from a tanker.

The source, who gave her name as Nireti, disclosed that the incident happened along Showboy Road, adjacent to a filling station in Ore.

She narrated that after losing control, the truck spilled its contents on the road, after which people began to rush in order to scoop fuel.

The source, a trader in the area, added that over 15 bodies were roasted in the inferno, including three children and a pregnant woman.

She said: “I was in my shop when I heard the tanker fall. The rain was also falling. People were taking fuel when fire started after a spark from a phone.

“Three children died, and we have counted over 15 bodies. A pregnant woman who wanted to buy the fuel also died. The money is still with her.”

Meanwhile, another eye witness identified as Cyriacus said they were inside the church when the tanker fell and spilled its contents on the road.

Cyriacus stated that some persons rushed to scoop fuel despite being warned by their Cleric.

He said: “We were inside the church when we heard that tanker fell. The rain was also falling. People were taking fuel when fire started after a spark from a phone.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olufumilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, when contacted, said she was yet to get details of the incident.

The Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday mocked a legal practitioner, Maxwell Okpara for dragging the agency to court.

News Verified reports that Okpara and other lawyers had filed a contempt of court charge against the DSS and its Director-General, Yusuf Bichi, over the continued detention of suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

According to the lawyers, the criminal charge against the DSS boss was a result of a violation of multiple judgements and orders of the court directing the release of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele, from the custody of the agency.

Led by Maxwell Opara and Ahmed Tijani, the lawyers are praying that the court commits Bichi to prison until he purges himself of the contempt.

In their motion filed before the court for the issuing of Form 48 and Form 49, the lawyers said by the judgements and orders of Justice M. A. Hassan, Justice Hamza Muazu and Justice Bello Kawu, the DSS DG ought to have released Emefiele from detention.

In the affidavit in support of the application, the consortium deposed to the fact that Justice M. A. Hassan restrained the respondents in that suit, particularly the DSS, from arresting, detaining, or interrogating Emefiele for offences connected to terrorism financing, money laundering, round tripping, financial crimes of national security dimension, among others.

Reacting in a series of post on its Twitter handle, the DSS questioned the rationale behind the court case, wondering whether Emefiele is part of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra.

Describing Okpara as a Biafra agitator and charge and bail lawyer, the DSS slammed him for defending the suspended CBN Governor.

The agency wrote: “Charge and bail, overzealous uninformed IPOB/ESN lawyer Maxwell Okpara mobilises other like minded lawyers against DGSS. Futile Efforts. Well, Nigerians, beware! This is in bad faith. Transferred aggression.

“A Biafran Republic agitator and Outlawed IPOB counsel defending the suspended CBN Governor. Is IPOB defending one of theirs? What a contradiction…..hmmm…what’s the connection? Is someone telling us something? May Maxwell be properly educated on points of law, please.”

The former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has reportedly taken a new bride on Saturday.

Naija News learned that the former minister allegedly got married to Hajia Rakkiya Bashir in a private Nikkai ceremony on Saturday.

Rakkiya Bashir is now Malami’s fourth wife.

Confirming the development, a source told SaharaReporters, “Malami, after being done with Buhari’s daughter, whom he married to subvert his removal from office at the time, it’s time to move on to others, like this latest marriage just consummated,”

Ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri has said the request for President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the South East will not achieve the desired results.

In a tweet via his Twitter page on Monday, the political analyst said the request to declare a state of emergency would only aggravate issues in the region and could lead to another crisis.

The former aide stated that the continued sit-at-home orders are due to the continued incarceration of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Omokri said the plan to bring peace to the South East was to convince President Bola Tinubu to release Kanu on the condition that he would give up violence to pursue his secession agenda and promote any political or social policy he has peacefully and democratically.

He wrote: “I am not sure the request for President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the Southeast will achieve the desired results. In my opinion, it will only aggravate issues. Let’s look at the challenge holistically instead. Why are there sit-at-homes in the Southeast? It is due to the continued incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu.

“Now, Nnamdi Kanu himself was a response to former President Buhari’s attitude towards the Southeast. He considered the region a “dot in a circle” and shortchanged them because ‘constituents, for example, that gave me 97% cannot, in all honesty, be treated on some issues with constituencies that gave me 5%’.

“But Buhari is gone, and that class of 1966 mentality, which fought the civil war, is no longer in control of Nigeria’s affairs. There has been a change of guard.

“What lovers of Nigeria ought to do to bring peace to the Southeast is to convince President Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu on the condition that Mr Kanu will give up violence as a means of pursuing his agenda, and that he would promote any political or social policy he has peacefully and democratically.

“With Muhammadu Buhari out of the picture, I am not sure Mr Kanu will reject such conditions. And if he is freed, the sit-at-homes will die a natural death. That will be a less expensive way to resolve the crisis. Plus, fewer people will die.

“But if a state of emergency is declared, and soldiers and other security forces are deployed in the Southeast, it will lead to clashes with Mr Kanu’s supporters, who are not cowards and recreate and entrench the type of atmosphere that led to the emergence of Nnamdi Kanu, and the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra movement in the first place.

“The state of emergency will be a massive public relations success for IPOB, and recruitment into the group will increase, along with anti-Nigeria sentiments amongst moderate Southeasterners.

“But if, instead, President Tinubu sets up a Southeast Development Commission and spends the money he would have used to send soldiers into the zone to ensure the rapid infrastructural development of the Southeast, not only will he reduce anti-Nigeria sentiment amongst the Igbos to the barest minimum, even he can expect massive votes from that region in future elections.

“It is not every time that force and state of emergency works. What did the state of emergency achieve in the Northeast, except to turn the region’s people against President Jonathan, who actually meant well for them?

In a viral video being circulating on social media, News Verified learnt that in Ebonyi State, on the 4th of July, 2023, a group of IPOB/ESN terrorists were seen shooting sporadically in the air at Ishieke market Abakeliki in Ebonyi State, in the name of enforcing the sit at home.

You will recall that Simon Ekpa, the leader of Autopilot, a faction of the IPOB, had, in a statement on June 14, announced that there would be a one-week sit-at-home in the South Eastern part of Nigeria.

Ekpa, a self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, said the sit-at-home would hold from 3 to 5 July and continue from Friday, 7 to 10 July.

He said it was aimed at demanding the “immediate and unconditional release” of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is in Federal Government detention.

However, the group who were seen terrorizing their own people, in the name of enforcing the sit at home have been apprehended by the security agent. It was gathered that the security operatives stormed their camp and arrested them.

President Bola Tinubu has tendered copies of his academic credentials from the Chicago State University before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).

The President tendred copies of his educational records from the Chicago State University before the Tribunal as he opened his defense in the petition instituted against his victory in the 2023 election by Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Represented by his lawyer, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Tinubu also presented a 2007 letter from the United States Embassy in Nigeria, absolving him of any criminal liability in the US, and the letter of request from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to the US Embassy.

The academic records from the Chicago State University, 12 documents in all, were certified on June 28, 2023 by Jamar C. Orr, the Associate General Counsel, Office of the Legal Affairs, Chicago State University.

Also tendered are six copies of documents relating to immigration and visa records of trips made to the US by Tinubu between 2011 and 2021, among other documents.

Mason Mount Transfer: Mason Mount and his entourage have been spotted at the Manchester United training facility this Monday. He has appeared at the Carrington facility for his medical tests. Ifeanyi Ubah vows to endMonday sit-at-home through show of force

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah representing Anambra South Senatorial District at the National Assembly has moved to end Monday sit-at-home in his constituency soon, saying the illegal exercise has caused much damages and plains to Ndigbo.

Ubah lamented the adverse effect the exercise has so far inflicted on the economic value of Ndigbo, insisting that it has to be stopped.


He spoke while addressing over 2000 vigilante operatives from the four quarters of Nnewi, comprising Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim and Nnewi-Ichi, at the Ifeanyi Ubah International stadium, Nnewi, where he inaugurated security gadgets procured to ensure adequate security for the entire Nnewi community and environ.

Senator Ubah said the vigilante would move into action to protect the people and their businesses to enable them to move out and do their businesses freely on Mondays. He directed them to commence work today.

While beefing up security, Ubah said he is also working hard to see that Nnamdi Kanu is freed from detention.


“I am sure he will come out from detention sooner than later. We in the 10th National Assembly are going to give Kanu’s case a new legislative option to facilitate his freedom and I have even personally initiated a move towards that direction”, he promised.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, on Sunday said it would withdraw the result of a certain Ejikeme Mmesoma for manually inflating her result and announcing herself as the top scorer for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

According to a statement issued by the board, Ejikeme used her manually inflated score to attract a N3 million scholarship from Innoson Motors and was set to be honored by the Anambra State government before she was exposed.

“The attention of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has been drawn to several publications in both print and online media celebrating certain candidates for being high scorers in the 2023 UTME.

“The Board is constrained to set the records straight and wishes to state unequivocally that many of the results which many of these candidates are parading are fake. In many instances, some of these candidates had actually obtained far lower scores than they are claiming and had used some funny software packages to manipulate their results to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

“The most pathetic of them all is the case of Miss Ejikeme Joy Mmesoma, who claimed to have scored 362 in the 2023 UTME and was awarded a N3m scholarship by Chief (Dr.) Innocent Chukwuma. She was even set to be honoured by the Anambra State Government when one of its top officials put a call through to JAMB to confirm her claim, only for the Board to reveal that Miss Ejikeme Joy Mmesoma had actually scored 249 and not the 362 she claimed. She had manipulated her UTME result to deceive the public to fraudulently obtain scholarships and other recognitions.”
Also speaking in the statement, the board noted that it also identified the case of another fraudulent candidate who claimed to have scored a 380 aggregate score in the last UTME“A similar case was that of one Atung Gerald in Kaduna, who claimed to have scored 380. His ethnic group had taken the issue up, requesting that he be given special recognition, only for the Board to disappoint them with the incontestable fact that Atung never obtained the 2023 UTME application documents, not to talk of sitting the examination.

“The Board would, therefore, want to advise the public to always cross check these claims by candidates with the Board before rushing to honour them with undeserving awards, as certain software has been created to fake their version of their results and put same out in the public space for fun, and this is what the sponsors of these candidates are using to defraud good-spirited Nigerians such as Dr. Innocent, the founder of Innoson Motors, who sincerely desires to celebrate academic excellence by investing in the education of a young Nigerian.”

Speaking on the punishment for Ejikeme, the board noted that it would withdraw her result and also prosecute her.

“We commended the likes of Dr. Innocent Chukwuma and wish to encourage other Nigerians, who desire to invest in the future of genuine youngsters, never to be discouraged but to always ensure that they get the authentic results from the Board as done by the Anambra State Ministry of Education; otherwise they will be celebrating criminality as this is just another new fraudulent method in town. However, these candidates only succeed in manipulating what they are holding, as the authentic results are with the Board and would be transmitted to their schools of choice at the appropriate time.

“It is to be noted that Miss Mmesoma had sent a message to the Board’s platform to request her UTME result, after which she manually inflated her scores and pasted same on the 2022 UTME result sheet. Unknown to her, the Board had changed the design of the 2023 UTME result sheet. Her original result remains 249, as nothing can change that. With this her ignoble act, Miss Mmesoma would be prosecuted and her original result withdrawn. This is not all, as the Board would, in due course, investigate all candidates laying claims to higher scores than they actually obtained. Once discovered, such candidates’ original results would be withdrawn forthwith, and they would be handed over to relevant security agencies for prosecution.”
