https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZtTLi-V9ZA A man identified as Uwakwe Ugwuanyi, has been banished for life from Umuela village, Ibagwa-Aka community in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State after he was accused of being responsible for many deaths in his family. On Tuesday, January 3, 2022, the villagers who sang mourning songs, carried palm fronds as well as a mock coffin to the doorstep of Uwakwe. They alleged that within the last two years, no fewer than five youths had died in his family. One Bright King, in Facebook posts, claimed that the man killed five of his brother’s children. Speaking to The Nation, a village source said that when people died in the family, the suspect always volunteered to go to the diviners for fact-finding. Upon his return, the source continued, he would always inform the villagers that his late elder brother was responsible for the deaths. But, things seemed to have gotten out of hand when another youth died in the family during the last Yuletide season. The development forced the youths of the village to go to another diviner to know the cause of the deaths. A family member, who preferred anonymity said: “Our brothers and sisters have been dying for a long time now. Anytime you want to go and search for what is happening to our family, Mr. Uwakwe will say he will do that for us,” “When he comes back from the search he will tell you that his late brother, who is his elder brother is responsible for the death of the children; that his late elder brother had a problem with the gods; that the gods are the ones responsible for taking the life of the children. “But the last one happened and the youths are very angry about his death. We decided to go and look for a solution together, which we did. We went to many places in search of a solution and the picture of the man kept on popping up that our uncle is responsible for all the death that has been happening in Umuela village in the Ibagwa-Aka community,” “So, when we brought home what we saw, the entire village took a decision that he be banished from our community.” https://thisweekng.com/2023/01/05/man-banished-from-enugu-community-over-death-of-his-brothers-five-children-video/

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, recovered approximately N13bn as proceeds from illegal payments made under the subsidy regime between 2017 and 2021. This was detailed in a report published on the website of the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU). The report partly reads: “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the agency responsible for the investigation and prosecution of fraudulent subsidies in the oil and gas in Nigeria recovered N12,998,963,178.29 as proceeds of illegal payment made under the subsidy regime between 2017 and 2021.” A breakdown showed that approximately N4.67bn was recovered in 2017, N4.29bn in 2018, N2.41bn in 2019, N416.51m in 2020 and N1.22bn in 2021. The report added: “Opportunities for fraudulent activities exist in the oil and gas sector from extraction to sales of refined products to consumers. The absence of reliable equipment to measure the volume of crude oil being extracted makes it impossible to estimate the volume of crude oil extracted and even stolen through oil theft and vandalism. Oil theft also occurs in the downstream sector, as petrol pumps are rigged at petrol stations or adulterated. “Also, to be noted is the sale of petroleum products on the ‘black market’ giving rise to petroleum products being sold at exorbitant prices. Of concern is the emerging trend of filling station attendants acting as money agents, without appropriate customer due diligence carried out. It should be stated, however, that in most cases, the amount sold to an individual is usually not suspicious. However, if left unchecked, this practice could pose a threat to the country.” The report also touched on the diversion of petroleum products to non-designated retail outlets. It said this is a fraudulent practice that leverages on the fuel subsidy regime. The report reads: “Other fraudulent practices include the diversion of petroleum products to non-designated retail outlets to gain undue financial advantage. This practice may be intra- state, inter-state and across the borders of Nigeria to neighbouring countries. “The Joint Border Exercise in August 2019 with operation code-named ‘Exercise Swift Response’ resulted in large number of seizures of trucks and other vehicles used to smuggle refined products outside the country. This exercise was coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser. This is also connected to the subsidy regime as the cost of PMS in Nigeria is significantly lower than in neighbouring countries. “Another fraudulent practice is the smuggling of petroleum products. The NNPC recorded daily Premium Motor Spirit evacuation spikes in various depots across the country, against government projected volumes of daily consumption. These spikes led to the reactivation of Operation White II – an inter-agency task team comprising the NNPC, stakeholders and LEAs in May 2021. It was further reported that these volumes were being smuggled out to neighbouring countries like Benin Republic, Cameroun, Niger republic etc, with higher PMS prices compared to Nigeria. The OPW II team was mandated to curtail the smuggling, diversion and hoarding of PMS to ensure the Nation’s energy security. Intelligence-driven investigations are ongoing.” Fuel subsidy corruption has been a topic of concern in Nigeria. The World Bank said that increasing fuel subsidies put the Nigerian economy at a high risk as subsidy payments could significantly impact public finance and pose debt sustainability concerns. https://thisweekng.com/2023/01/04/efcc-recovers-n13bn-illegal-fuel-subsidy-payment/ |

The aggrieved five Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, commonly called the G5, recently held a marathon meeting with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 election. The meeting happened in London, United Kingdom (UK), and featured discussions around Tinubu’s presidential ambition. Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu states and some political heavyweights from the South had vowed not to support the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over the refusal of the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, to resign after Atiku obtained the presidential ticket of the party. But hours after the governors meeting with Tinubu, the PDP said it was not aware of their parley with the ruling party’s presidential candidate, noting that as far it was concerned, the governors were in the UK on vacation. The main opposition party, however, threatened to punish the governors for any anti-party activities, stressing that it had the capacity to discipline the recalcitrant governors. This newspaper gathered that Tinubu and his associates were unequivocal in their demand for the disgruntled PDP chieftains to support him. Recall that the G5 and their allies have called for the removal of the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, citing regional balance in the party’s structure. However, Ayu has insisted that he won’t step down till the end of his four-year tenure, even as the G5 made his resignation a precondition to support Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential ambition. Some of the aggrieved PDP governors are Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Okezie Ikepeazu of Abia state, and Samuel Ortom of Benue state. “For now, we are only waiting for the G-5 governors to make the official pronouncement in January.” However, another highly placed source who pleaded anonymity stated that Tinubu was in Nigeria. “I have received several inquiries on this report of the governor’s supposed travel with Asiwaju (Tinubu) and I can tell you that he is still in Nigeria.” “In fact, I spoke with him twice today (Wednesday). Even if he were to travel to meet the G-5 Governors outside the country, it is not something he would want to disclose, but he is very much in the country,” https://thisweekng.com/2022/12/29/2023-presidency-details-emerge-on-tinubus-london-meeting-with-wike-others/ |
Festus Keyamo (SAN), spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, has dismissed reports that the G5 Governors may endorse the Labour Party presidential flag-bearer for the 2023 election, Peter Obi. Governors who are members of the G5 are Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo). The five men are chieftains of Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). They have been at loggerheads with their party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar after Wike failed to win the party’s presidential ticket. They are also unhappy that Atiku rejected Wike as a running mate and are demanding the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as the party’s National Chairman, allegedly to reduce the dominance of the PDP by the North. It was gathered barring any last-minute change in political permutations, the aggrieved PDP governors who are presently in London, United Kingdom (UK) for strategic meetings, may have concluded plans to endorse Obi, a former governor of Anambra State. Reacting to the report of the G5’s imminent endorsement of Obi, Keyamo said the Labour Party has no electoral value. “The Labour Party that you claimed many of these G-5 governors are looking at is untested and cannot be trusted. It has no electoral value for now because it has not been tested. “It is a known fact that anybody who has been tested has already gone through the ballot box and the LP, as presently constituted, has not done that. “As proper politicians, there is no other place to take a chance outside the APC,” Keyamo told Punch. https://thisweekng.com/2022/12/29/2023-presidency-keyamo-speaks-on-g5-govs-endorsing-peter-obi/

One of the notorious commanders of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/Eastern Security Network (ESN), identified as Lance Corporal Nwangwu Chiwendu aka Onyearmy, has named a close confidant of Nnamdi Kanu, Chinasa Nworu, as one of those sponsoring them to unleash terror in Nigeria’s southeast region. Thisweekng reports that Onyearmy, a deserter from the Nigerian Army had been on the Imo State Police Command’s wanted list for a long time. It was learned that the 34-year-old native of Amaohuru Nguru in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State was arrested on December 23, 2022, in his hometown while attending his father’s burial. Speaking to newsmen in Owerri on Wednesday, Onyearmy mentioned Nworu and IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary who deploys the pseudonym, Emma Powerful, as some of their sponsors. Questioned by journalists on their sponsors, Onyearmy replied: “DOS (IPOB’s Directorate of State) which we know as Emma Powerful, Chinasa Nworu, and others. “The first money one person used to register with us is N3.5 million. And he promised that he is going to give us N10 million every month. “We were formerly assassins. Like when Ebube called us to go and kill one man, we killed him.” Onyearmy said when he was persuaded to join the criminal group, he was told that if his salary with the Nigerian Army is N200, 000, he will get double the pay. It is the second time in one week that Nworu would be named as a terror sponsor. An arrested IPOB gunman, Okechukwu Ama-Nlemedim, popularly known as ‘Ejima’ had last Wednesday named Nworu as their sponsor. Asked how long Nworu has been sponsoring the ESN, Ama-Nlemedim replied: “Getting to two years now. Him with Okey Foreign. It is only Chinasa Nworu and Okey Foreign that sponsor us from abroad. The other one is in the village here.” He added: “The reason Chinasa gave us (to perpetrate terror) is that these Ebubeagu people, anywhere wey we see them, make we attack them.” https://thisweekng.com/2022/12/29/ipob-again-nnamdi-kanus-confidant-named-as-esn-terror-sponsor-in-south-east/
