Job brief

We are looking for an Accountant to manage all financial transactions, from fixed payments and variable expenses to bank deposits and budgets.

Accountant responsibilities include auditing financial documents and procedures, reconciling bank statements and calculating tax payments and returns. To be successful in this role, you should have previous experience with bookkeeping and a flair for spotting numerical mistakes.

Ultimately, you will provide us with accurate quantitative information on financial position, liquidity and cash flows of our business, while ensuring we’re compliant with all tax regulations.

Responsibilities

Manage all accounting transactions
Prepare budget forecasts
Publish financial statements in time
Handle monthly, quarterly and annual closings
Reconcile accounts payable and receivable
Ensure timely bank payments
Compute taxes and prepare tax returns
Manage balance sheets and profit/loss statements
Report on the company’s financial health and liquidity
Audit financial transactions and documents
Reinforce financial data confidentiality and conduct database backups when necessary
Comply with financial policies and regulations
Controlling the payroll
Producing an accurate set of month-end accounts, with comparisons to forecasts and previous periods
Preparing profit and loss accounts and the balance sheet for senior management
Assisting in preparing budgets and business planning, including projected room revenue
Reconciling bank statements
Ensuring legislation is followed regarding VAT and PAYE
Chasing late payments, reporting bad debts and keeping a careful eye on the cash flow
Requirements and skills

Accountancy skills, ideally honed in a hospitality environment
IT knowledge, as transactions are usually done through computerized systems, electronic cash tills and so on
Data processing skills, including spreadsheet packages
Analytical and communication skills
Unmatched attention to detail as you’ll be preparing detailed financial information for senior management
Excellent knowledge of accounting regulations and procedures, including the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Hands-on experience with Hotel accounting software ,Advanced MS Excel skills including VLOOKUP and pivot tables
Experience with general ledger functions
Strong attention to detail and good analytical skills
BSc in Accounting, Finance or relevant degree

Upon returning to Nigeria a few years back, my brother and I lived together for a while.

Our favourite pastime was to whip out the PS4 controllers and play FIFA.

I initially used to beat him black and blue-5-0, 6-1, 6-3. Those scores were commonplace.

After a while, the games became much harder for me to win, and after some time, he started winning too.

After playing for a while, he figured out how I played the game and was able to beat me at it. He joked that my playing style was one-dimensional, or predictable.

To keep my position as the top dog, I needed to drastically alter my style and step it up a notch.

It may appear to be a lighthearted story, but it contains a few serious life lessons. I’ll just go with 2.

1. When life knocks you down, remember to use what you've learned to start planning your comeback. If you look close enough, you will find a lesson in every loss.

2. Never be too comfortable when you are at the top. Keep in mind that someone is coming for your spot. These people have learned everything about you, including (and especially) your flaws and weaknesses. So you will always need to re-strategize every now and then to remain relevant.

I know I said two but let me sneak one more in here.

Ultimately, know that you will win some and lose some.

First of all, let's check out the differences between CV and Resume

A curriculum vitae (CV) provides a summary of your experience and skills. The term originates from the French word résumé, which translates to “abstract” or “summary.”

The differences between a resume and a CV include the document’s length, contents and purpose. You should also consider which region of the world you’re applying in and your career path when deciding which is more appropriate to use.

Now that we know the differences between CVs and Resumes

Let's talk about reasons why your job application is being rejected all the time;

1. Your CV/Resume is very bad;

When I started off on Linkedin, I had a CV I do send out for job applications but never got a favourable response for once�. This made me took CV writing serious and I was opportune to learn from experts and Cambridge materials in addition.

I put into practice all that I learnt about CV writing and boom, I started getting responses using the new CV

And one more thing you should know about CV/Resume is that; you need to keep updating it as you add to your skills, experiences, and certifications.

2. You don't back up your CV/Resume with a Cover Letter;

If you are really serious about getting the job you have applied for/applying for, then it's important you back it up with a Cover Letter most especially when required

The main purpose of a cover letter is to interest the employer in reading your resume/CV. This gives the recruiter or hiring manager a more detailed view of your accomplishments and a sense of what you'll bring to the table if you are hired

I had different different cover letter I use when I just started on LinkedIn. I remember helping out a friend to write his cover letter one time, he later got called for interview that same week�

Cover Letters are important, don't despise it❗

3. Your Email Address is a turnoff:

I wonder why you can't create an email address with your real name, if you don't want to use your name and surname, let it have one of your names and initials at least. How can a serious jobseeker use iamamarlian@gmail.com or thebaddestboy@yahoo.com, who does that?

Your email address can be a complete turn off for Recruiters/HRs, you've given them one good reason why you don't deserve the job

How will you feel if I send you a mail address that doesn't have anything that looks like name in it. you'll feel like I want to scam you or I'm not real, isn't it?

Stop blaming Recruiters and HRs. Do the right thing, and you'll get the right job�

Urgent.

This means critical. As in, I need to fill a job immediately.

Educated.

This means smart, well read, training courses or experienced.

It doesn’t necessarily mean a degree.

Experienced.

This means that the candidate has knowledge of a certain function or industry. Or a track record of success.

It does not mean a certain number of years or a certain number of jobs.

Competitive.

This means the salary is attractive or comparable with market value. It does NOT mean underpaid or cheap.

Management.

This means managing people. It’s not a title where you slap all kinds of unrelated responsibilities….and expect an employee to do the job of 2 or 3 people for 1 salary.

Synergy.

This means nothing. If you see the word “synergy” in a job description, move on.

Family.

These are people related to you. Work is not family. It’s a business arrangement. If you see the word family in a job description, it’s a dysfunctional one. At best.

Room for growth.

This means opportunities to be promoted. Career planning and expected salary increases.

It does not mean bigger pants because you are stress eating at your job.

And last but not least….

Entry Level.

This means no experience. It means your last job was playing beer pong and skipping class. It does not mean 2 years, 5 years or MBA required.
