Politics › FG: We Have Opened Single-Digit Mortgage Loans For Nigerians by TimeManager(op): 5:12pm On Aug 04, 2025 |
Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) says Nigerians have started accessing affordable long-term mortgage facilities at 9.75 per cent.
The mortgage facilities extend as long as 20 years, a radical initiative aimed at bridging the country’s estimated 20 million units housing gap.
Chief Executive Officer, (MOFI), Dr. Armstrong Takang, said several beneficiaries across geopolitical zones have successfully accessed the single-digit, long-term mortgage fund, barely one month after it was launched.
He explained that the newly established MOFI Real Estate Investment Fund (MREIF), a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)-regulated housing fund designed to strengthen Nigeria’s housing finance sector, radically redefining the housing sector.
Takang made the disclosure at the Africa International Housing Show (AIHS) in Abuja. He described the MREIF as a much-needed, long-overdue intervention in the housing sector with real capacity to radically transform the entire housing value chain and deliver long-term impact.
According to him, through innovative financing, the federal government is poised to radically bridge the housing gap in Nigeria under a scheme designed for sustainability and wide-ranging impact.
He said the N1 trillion SEC-approved and regulated MREIF was structured to provide market-aligned mortgage solutions and tackle the systemic issues that have long plagued Nigeria’s housing sector—such as short mortgage tenors, high interest rates, and poor refinancing options.
He said: “MREIF was designed to hedge against liquidity challenges, corporate governance issues, accessibility barriers, and the perennial challenge of sustaining initiatives for the long-term”.
He explained that the Fund operates under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) structure with MOFI serving only as the sponsor.
The Fund itself is managed independently by a Fund Manager and is open to institutional investors.
It enjoys top-tier credit ratings—a AAA rating from Agusto and an AA rating from GCR—boosting its credibility in financial markets.
He pointed out that MREIF provides not only mortgages to homebuyers but also offtake guarantees to developers, ensuring that properties are purchased and projects are commercially viable. https://dailytrust.com/fg-weve-opened-single-digit-mortgage-loans-for-nigerians/

Politics › PDP Eyeing Jonathan As Obi’s Backup For 2027 Election by TimeManager(op): 1:35pm On Aug 04, 2025 |
There are indications that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is making frantic efforts to lure President Goodluck Jonathan to its fold for the party’s presidential ticket in 2027.
The Guardian gathered that a strong lobby of high-placed stalwarts has been mandated to convince Jonathan with the offer of an automatic ticket due to reservations about Mr Peter Obi’s purported plan to return to the PDP.
This is just as former Minister for Information and National Orientation, Prof Jerry Gana, noted that even though the 2023 Presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Obi, is a good candidate, the PDP has a better candidate.
Gana, during a national television programme on Arise Television, Primetime, disclosed that Obi would easily win the presidency if he returns to PDP, explaining that the party’s structures in the northern part of the country would guarantee his ballot numbers.
However, checks by The Guardian revealed that some chieftains of the party who are interested in contesting the 2031 presidential poll announced their preference for the former president Jonathan, saying that the constitutional limit of two maximum terms limits the former president to just one term of four years.
A member of the PDP Board of Trustees, who did not want his name in print, confided in The Guardian that despite Obi’s assurances of serving for just one term if elected as president, the feelings among the majority of party leaders are that Jonathan will not subject the party or Nigerians to second-guessing.
He said: “Let me tell you straight away, serious efforts are being made to pull Jonathan into the race. From the look of things, our northern colleagues believe that it is necessary to get the former president to come in and complete his second term.
“It is not that the Obi option has been ruled out, but developments in the Labour Party and the coalition make it risky to put all our eggs in one basket. We do not want a situation that could leave the party scratching around to field a strong contender.”
It was gathered that discussions about the feasibility of bringing back former President Jonathan formed part of the engagement among some party stalwarts in The Gambia, alongside issues on financing the party and funding the forthcoming presidential contest.
Special Assistant to Governor Bala Mohammed, Lawal Muazu, had last Thursday revealed that his principal, Governor Mohammed, Senator Abdul Ningi, and Dr Jonathan were part of a delegation to a summit focused on bilateral relations and promoting democratic governance in The Gambia.
Muazu explained in a post on his Facebook page that the visit was also seen as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the role of African statesmen in conflict resolution, good governance, and electoral support missions within the continent.
“The delegation engaged with Gambian leaders and stakeholders on matters related to peacebuilding, regional stability, and democratic development,” he added.
Exactly one year ago, Mohammed had informed a group urging him to join the presidential race that the only way he would not heed their call was if former President Jonathan was persuaded to contest in the 2027 presidential election.
Pledging to throw his weight behind the former President, the Bauchi State governor, who is also the Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, stated that he would support the ex-president.
“With regard to your call for me to present myself, I know there are good leaders within the PDP, especially my boss, Goodluck Jonathan. I have always said that as long as Jonathan is around, I will not present myself for leadership of this country unless he decides not to run,” he said.
“If we can persuade him to come forward, I will support him with my blood. Out of modesty, he is still not ready. I hope you will meet him and encourage him to run,” the Bauchi governor stated while responding to a group urging him to run for president in 2027.”
On whether Obi appeared reluctant to return to PDP, a leader of the Obidient Movement in South East, Dr Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh, told The Guardian that no sane person would advise the former LP presidential contender to join the main opposition party in its embattled state.
Ezeh pointed out that it is only after the PDP holds its elective convention coming up in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November that the party could return to reckoning, stressing that it is risky to swim in a river filled with sharks and crocodiles. https://guardian.ng/featured/pdp-eyeing-jonathan-as-obis-backup-for-2027-election-sources/

festacman: Two things.
One, a typical Nigerian 2-term president actually do EFFECTIVE governance for four years out of eight because of reelection bid and succession shenanigans. Just like what is currently happening in Nigeria.
Two, any elected presidential candidate who moves into the Aso Rock Villa with well-researched, brainstormed and developed compendium of transformative policy ideas, vital reforms, programs, etc to solve critical national problems and boost economic activities will hit the ground running. And he would achieve a lot in four years.
Our bar is too low in Nigeria that since the return to democracy in 1999, we have had 26 years of slow motion governance with a lot of looting. We deserve better. It's too easy to dream, easier to fathom, like a child driving a car with his mouth. By the tangled system under which the country operates, you can't do anything by mere paper policy until you get in there and discover it takes more than empty promises. Soludo would have turned Anambra to Dubai by now or Otti would have payed off outstanding salaries, even increased civil servants salaries threefolds the old payments. They now understand better being on the hot seat, electioneering is a different kettle of fish. The best way out is the constitutional process presently ongoing under the current administration. The President understands that a new constitution with the framework of a true federalism is the only panacea out of the status quo. And that's what the executive are determined to give to Nigerians very soon. Where every state can operate in a fair and equitable system. -Kiss the truth! |

True talk, a man that couldn't honour his promise to APGA and Ojukwu, he lacks the integrity to keep a vow. He overrated his relevance in comparing himself to some world leaders whose shoe laces he dare not tie. If after eight years, it was insults and cusses that greeted you climbing down the Governorship seat of a small monolithic state, how much more, a complex and diversed nation like Nigeria. Are you going to command the Governors and pull them like your appointees to dance to your dictates?. Do you think diverse ethnic demands and considerations can all be satisfied in a short time?. Even as small as LP, you have failed to provide leadership. According to Gov Soludo, any politician who promised a one term tenure needs a psychiatric evaluation. Nigerians are wiser than deceitful promises from desperate politicians.

Iyanya pledges N500K to nurse mocked by colleagues for coming to work despite strike Popular singer, Iyanya seeks to reward a nurse who was confronted and ridiculed by her colleagues for showing up to work despite the national strike action by the union.
A video which popped up online shows an elderly nurse who was being mocked by her colleagues for coming to work despite the strike.
recalls that days ago, nurses in the country had gone on strike to protest over unmet demands, including improved welfare, fair allowances, and better working conditions in federal health institutions.
The video sparked sympathy from Iyanya who sought to gift her 500K.
However, some netizens opine that he would only be rewarding bad behaviour as the strike was a collective action which she ought to be a part of.
Iyanya said …
“Can someone find her for me, I want to give her 500k. She is not a health care worker for the money but for human lives. Someone find her for me please.”
One netizen replied …
“Why do some Nigerians love rewarding bad behavior ”
Iyanya replied …
“What’s your definition of bad behavior? A nurse decided not to go on strike so she can save lives being at work is bad behavior to you? She is an essential worker and she deserves some compensation, and the way she was humiliated was wrong. Find her for me, I have 500k for her immediately.”

Politics › Start With Your Father - Nigerians Replies Bashir El-Rufai's Social Media Post by TimeManager(op): 5:42pm On Aug 02, 2025 |
In a post shared on Friday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Bashir wrote: “Nigeria can become great again. Unfortunately or fortunately (depending on context) a few certain people have to kpai (die) to achieve this dream.”
B ashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has sparked outrage on social media after declaring that certain people must be killed for Nigeria to attain greatness.
In a post shared on Friday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Bashir wrote: “Nigeria can become great again. Unfortunately or fortunately (depending on context) a few certain people have to kpai (die) to achieve this dream.”
The comment, which many users described as dangerous and inciteful, quickly drew sharp reactions on the platform, with some users questioning the moral compass of the former governor's son and accusing him of promoting violence as a political ideology.
One user, identified as Shozy, fired back, “Hand over your dear dad, he's part of the system that brought us to this point. But I'm sure you can't because you're already following in his footsteps, you can't acknowledge his flaws.”
In a swift response, Bashir defended himself while indirectly distancing from his father's legacy:
“Anyone that knows me knows I wholeheartedly acknowledge his flaws, furthermore I often disagree with many of his views. That is the sort of family I was raised in.”
Shozy replied, “If you acknowledge his flaws, are you promising to deliver him to be unalived among the people you're proposing that should be killed for the betterment of our country? Do you have the balls to make that tough decision, do you love the country that much to sacrifice him?”
Despite his attempt to clarify his stance, many Nigerians saw Bashir’s original statement as reflective of a growing disdain among political elites for democratic processes and the rule of law.
Some netizens also pointed out the irony of someone from a powerful political dynasty suggesting that “a few certain people” should be eliminated, without explicitly naming who those individuals are.
An X user, Ola said: “Your dad is leading in this one and definitely first that need to make way for the new generation.”
Another user, Tolu wrote: “Son of terrorist, bred by chaos, mentored by bloodshed, now tweeting like a saint.”
Ifedayo (JIMCRUZ) wtote, “So you’re wishing death on your father? I’m shaking right now.”
Oluwasayofunmi wrote, “Yes you are Right …I Nominate 1…@elrufai 2…@elrufai 3..@BashirElRufai “We all know how he said if any foreigner intervene in Nigeria politics they will return in Body Bags .. @grok fact check me please.”
Ikwere wrote: “Truth of the matter is, I like you as one of the best legislators we have right now? “But most times you tweet carelessly. I mean you should have some sense on leadership even when online so most of these tweets don't come back to hunt you.I love the bills you propose though.”
Another user, Armstrong wrote: “This is a reckless statement to say, people will start interpreting their own way very soon. You of all people should know how volatile the nation is when it comes to politics.”
Shunom wrote: “Nig will be good, remind your father that forgiveness is possible if he supports @PeterObi i served ur father as DG in my LG 2015. despite my contributions, I feel that he undermined my career advancement. I'm hoping that supporting aworthy cause can help heal past wounds."
Samfizzy wrote: “Your father first, charity begins at home, kpai your father first and we will handle ours . I heard your father borrowed money sotey Kaduna almost got taken over by China.”
El-Rufai’s Tainted Profile
Bashir’s father, El-Rufai, is accused of misappropriating ₦432 billion during his eight-year tenure between 2015 and 2023, leaving Kaduna State with significant debt liabilities.
In April 2025, the Kaduna State House of Assembly launched a probe via a 13-member ad-hoc committee to investigate alleged corruption, including money laundering and misuse of public funds.
El-Rufai has sued the Assembly, challenging the findings and defending his administration’s financial record.
Ethno-Religious Crisis During El-Rufai’s Tenure
His administration was marked by persistent ethno-religious violence, especially in Southern Kaduna, a region with a history of Christian-majority communities clashing with Fulani herders and other groups.
Temitope Ajayi, a presidential media aide, accused El-Rufai of deepening insecurity and fostering division, stating that his leadership created a “polarised and volatile” environment.
El-Rufai’s tenure is remembered for political divisiveness, fear, and distrust.
El-Rufai’s successor, Uba Sani, has emphasised inclusive governance and claims to have resolved the ethno-religious crisis through justice, equity, and fairness.
According to Sani, no ethnic-religious crisis has occurred in Kaduna since he took office in 2023, attributing this to his efforts to build elite consensus and promote unity. https://saharareporters.com/2025/08/01/start-your-father-nasir-el-rufai-nigerian-tweeps-roast-bashir-el-rufai-over-call-certain?
