Different women groups, under the umbrella of Women United for Yahaya Bello on Tuesday, organised a rally to express supports for Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi’s presidential ambition. The women from more than 600 groups across the six geo-political zones, at a solidarity walk entitled “One Million Women March for Yahaya Bello” in Abuja, said that Bello had all it eould take to be president in 2023. President, National Association of Women Entrepreneurs, Mrs Vera Ndanusa, told journalists that the turnout of women for the rally was an evidence that Bello supported women. “The large turnout of women for the rally shows that whenever you empower a woman, you reap the benefits many times over”, she said. Ndanusa said that Nigerian women had made up their minds to support whoever had been supporting them. She advised that it was not yet late for people in power to learn women empowerment from Bello, saying women empowerment should be top priority for the Nigeria government. On her part, the Iyaloja-General, South-West, Chief Mrs Nike Akingboye, said that with the massive turnout, Nigerian women regardless of tribe or religion, had shown that they were really united behind their own. Akingboye said, “market women are in total support of the Governor and would mobilize massively for him if he declares for Presidency.” Ace Nollywood actress, Binta Ayo-Mogaji, who led many other stars, said that the recent commendation of Bello by the Vice-President of Liberia, Jewel Taylor, was a key indicator of his support for women. Ayo-Mogaji urged women to come to support Bello, adding that Nigerian women must support that one governor that had shown them massive support. Women groups in “one million women walk for Bello” in Abuja Ayo-Mogaji who said that the turnout for the rally was impressive, urged the federal government to pay more attention to the needs of women. Former National President of National Association of Women Journalists, Mrs. Ifeayinwa Omowole, said that the 2023 election would be determined by women. Omowole said that the women were calling on Bello to run because they were tired of market demolition, wanted better medical facilities for women and children. “We believe that it is Bello that will do it for us because he is a governor that has carried women along in his appointment and the election of women as vice-chairman in all the local government of the state. “We decided to support him because he is young, vibrant, and supporting the course of women,” Omowole said. Another women leader, Sharon Akubo, described Bello’s administration as a government that had given women more inclusivity in governance. Akubo expressed optimism that if Bello became Nigeria’s President, more women would be empowered and appointed as ministers, saying Nigeria would get to a time where women could even become president of the country. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that women from key sectors, including NGOs, Civil Society Organisations, religious, professional bodies, media, politics, and entertainment took part in the rally.(NAN) https://thenationalpulse.co/women-groups-in-one-million-women-walk-for-yahaya-bello-in-abuja/

Former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has revealed how Nigeria’s late dictator, Gen Sani Abacha was discovered dead during the night in 1998. Abdulsalami noted that the former dictator died during the night and the then Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Coomassie, broke the news to him. The 79-year-old retired general stated during an interview with Daily Trust TV. WITHIN NIGERIA had earlier reported that Abdulsalami narrated how late Moshood Abiola, MKO, winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, fell ill and died during a meeting with the American delegation while in detention in 1998. He said Abiola was not killed but died after falling ill, contrary to the popular story that the politician took poisoned tea. Speaking on what he knew about the death of Abacha, Abdulsalami said, “A lot happened the day General Abacha passed away. He died I think the day he was to travel to Togo for, I think, the ECOWAs or AU summit. “Now I got a call from the Villa that General Abacha wanted to see me. So, immediately what came to my mind, I said; I hope he had not changed his mind about going to this Togo and was going to send me because at that time when he passed away, already I was the de facto number two man because at that time General Diya and others were having a problem on this alleged coup. “So I suspected that the General had changed his mind and he was going to send me because, in a lot of times, I am called upon to go and represent the head of state. So I took my time when I went to the bathroom and I told my wife, “look I think I might be going to this AU Summit, so help me prepare my bag” but before I finished then there was another call. “Yes, in the morning. Then there was another call; “look the president is waiting for you,” I said, “okay I am coming”. So I casually put on my tracksuit since there was no time to dress in uniform and so on since there was agitation that I was wanted immediately. “So I came with my tracksuit, I think I was even wearing slippers. When I entered they said, “General is in the office”; so naturally when I come to the office, no matter who was with General Abacha I normally just go in and meet him, and maybe he would say “Okay, wait, let me finish with this gentleman” or he will ask the fellow to give us chance. “To my surprise when I came, as I was climbing the steps, somebody said, “No, he said you have to wait in the waiting room”. To my surprise, I was in the waiting room for over 30, 40 minutes, then I kept wondering what was happening. Any time I wanted to go up, they said no, the General said I should wait. “So after about 40 minutes waiting, then Late Coomassie, (Ibrahim Coomassie), who was the Inspector-General of Police came to where I was sitting and he said “Please come”. Instead of going up to the office, we followed out, he said, “No, we are going to the house”. “It was in that process he told me, “Look, unfortunately, General Abacha has passed on in the night”. So that was how we went to the villa where General Abacha was living and as we entered, they showed me on the right where his corpse was, so I entered and prayed for his soul and so on. “Then we entered the parlour where I found some gentlemen including I think…Coomassie of course was there then the chief justice of the federation, I think Ambassador Babagana Kingibe and one or two security operatives, I can’t remember everybody. “Well at that time I was told he passed away and so on and at that time all these speculations did not arise until later on. All we were concerned was that okay, that the head of state has passed on, how do we now break the news to the country, and so on and so forth. “We were guided by the then chief justice of the federation saying that “Look, so much as there is the need to inform Nigerians about the passing away of the head of state, you cannot leave a vacuum, there must be a substantive head of state before you can go ahead with other things”. So I think that set up the chain of events. “So immediately, as the chief of defense staff then, I quickly summoned for the council of state meeting. I was still in my tracksuit because there was no time because it was really a shocking and devastating period we found ourselves. So it was later when we set up the meeting, that I had to go home and really get properly dressed. “So now when I came back well dressed, by that time members of the military ruling council had started arriving, when we all assembled then we went to the meeting. Of all course, we had to break the news although it had become a common knowledge between the members that his Excellency General Abacha had passed on. “We had to tell the council of his demise and the advice given by the chief justice of the federation, that before we did anything there must be somebody to take over so that he is in charge. “It took time before the members of the council of state arrived. Of course in the chamber, there were a lot of interactions. Finally, it was decided that okay we had General Useini who was then the most senior officer, so to speak, but he was in the administration, he was then minister of FCT and I was the chief of defense staff, so the issue was one of us should emerge as the head of state.” Source: https://thenationalpulse.co/abdulsalami-reveals-how-abacha-was-discovered-dead/

Armenian President, Armen Sarkissian, has resigned from office over lack of power under the country’s constitution to implement necessary changes. Sarkissian, in a statement posted on the presidential website on Sunday, January 23, attributed his resignation to “a paradoxical situation when the President has to be a guarantor of statehood without actually having any real tool.” “Because of the responsibility, I assumed as the President of the Republic. I was obliged to do everything in my power to rule out further deepening of the internal division, possible clashes, which could lead to extremely negative consequences. I also sought to use my reputation and connections gained throughout my many years of work, my international political and economic potential to build a strong, stable state,” he said. The 68-year-old pointed out in the statement that due to the lack of appropriate tools endowed by the constitution, he failed to influence the political events that led to the current national crisis. According to the statement, the president does not have the power to influence important domestic decision-making processes which is important for the country. Sarkissian stressed that the purpose of his proposal “was not to move from one model of government to another, but to create a state system based on checks and balances.” Before his resignation, Sarkissian was at the centre of a political crisis following an outbreak of fighting between Armenia and neighbour Azerbaijan, over control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region. More than 6,500 people were killed in the six weeks of fighting, which ended in a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement, granting Azerbaijan part of the enclave and surrounding areas. The country has also been transitioning from a direct presidential system of governance to a parliamentary one after constitutional reforms were approved in a national referendum in December 2015. The parliament can elect a president with a three-quarters majority. Source: https://thenationalpulse.co/armenian-president-resigns-over-lack-of-power/

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said that the politicisation of religion – as forbidden by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) – has no place in Nigeria. Shehu, who was responding to some recent statements from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), maintained that the Buhari’s administration will never tolerate religious intolerance, reiterating that administration’s support for the freedom to practice whichever belief any Nigerian wishes. CAN, had on Monday urged the President Buhari-led government to deploy every necessary available resources at its disposal to ensure that all Christians in the captivity of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists are freed. A statement by President of CAN, Rev Dr Samson Ayokunle, signed by his spokesman, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, recalled that the Chairman of CAN in Michika, Adamawa State, Rev. Lawan Andimi, was abducted by Boko Haram terrorists last week when they invaded the predominant Christian community. Responding via a statement personally signed by him, the presidential spokesman explained that the security forces of Nigeria are working continuously to return those taken hostage by Boko Haram to their families, friends and communities, adding that in doing this, the government has full confidence in their ability to accomplish the task. According to the statement, “On its own part, government has condemned some of the appalling acts of terror, especially following the festive period. “Yet, to continue to see these happenings solely in religious terms – removed from social, economic and environmental factors – simplifies complexities that must be heeded. Karl Fredrik “Freddie” Ljungberg (Swedish pronunciation: [¹freːdrɪk ²jɵŋːbærj]; born 16 April 1977) is a Swedish former footballer who played as a winger and is the current head coach at Arsenal. He began his career at Halmstad and went on to spend most of his career at Arsenal, where he won honours including two Premier League titles and three FA Cups, scoring in two finals including the victory in 2002. After leaving Arsenal in 2007, he had short spells at a number of clubs in England, Scotland, the United States, Japan and India. An international for a full decade, Ljungberg earned 75 caps and represented Sweden at Euro 2000, Euro 2004 and Euro 2008, as well as at the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups. He was captain of the Swedish national team from 2006 until he announced his international retirement after UEFA Euro 2008. Ljungberg was a model for Calvin Klein underwear until 2007. He previously represented brands such as Nike, Procter & Gamble, L’Oreal, Puma, Beats, ESPN and Pepsi. Early life Ljungberg was born on 16 April 1977 in Vittsjö, Sweden to parents Roy Alve Erling Ljungberg, a civil engineer and owner of a construction and consultant business, and Elisabeth Bodil Ljungberg, a Swedish Labor Department worker. On 12 September 1984, the Ljungbergs had another son, Karl Oskar Filip. In 1982, the Ljungberg family left Vittsjö and moved to Halmstad. At first, the tenacious 5-year old would not have any part of moving. He argued with his parents that he did not want to live in Halmstad. His parents relented and took him to Halmstads BK where he played on the youth team under Olle Eriksson. From the time he was 5–14, Ljungberg was coached by Eriksson. Eriksson’s impression of the youngster was that he was remarkably talented for his age and that he was considerate of other players, noting that Ljungberg would pass the ball to his friends so that they would have a chance to score. Ljungberg credits Eriksson for having a profound effect on his career as well as Brazilian football player, Sócrates. Also in his youth, he enjoyed playing ice hockey and developed a talent for handball; he was eventually called up to the under-15 national handball team but decided to focus his attentions on football. Ljungberg did well in academic subjects as well as sports. When he finished 9th grade his marks averaged 4.1 on the 5-point scale.[14] At 18, Ljungberg decided to attend university to study information technology and economics but struggled to balance the hectic academic timetable with the physically demanding commitments of professional football. Eventually, he quit university to concentrate on his football career Club career Halmstads BK In 1989, at the age of 12, Ljungberg had convinced Halmstads BK to move him from p12 to p14 which was against Halmstad’s policies at the time.[16] At age 14, Ljungberg joined the junior team under coach Robert Nordström. His perseverance paid off because three years later he was moved up to the senior team. Ljungberg made his senior debut on 23 October 1994 in the Allsvenskan against AIK. In 1995, Ljungberg played 31 games in which he scored his first goal as a professional player. That same year Halmstad won the Swedish Cup. In 1997, Halmstad won the Allsvenskan with Ljungberg scoring and setting up goals that season for the club despite picking up injuries. During his time with Halmstad, he went on to make 139 appearances and score 16 goals for the club. After his winning of several trophies in his years with Halmstad, Ljungberg’s star was on the rise with interest from Barcelona, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Parma and Arsenal. Arsenal Ljungberg, second from left, in a match between Arsenal and Middlesbrough, September 2006 Ljungberg was signed by Arsenal in 1998 for £3 million. Arsenal scouts watched him for over a year and Arsenal’s manager, Arsène Wenger, took the unusual step of authorising the signing after watching Ljungberg play for Sweden in their victory against England on television, without seeing him play live. Seeing Ljungberg’s performance against England only confirmed to Wenger that Ljungberg could cope against English opponents, and he was signed shortly after. Ljungberg proved himself without difficulty and scored on his debut on 20 September after coming on as a substitute against rival club Manchester United, the match ending 3–0. Some of Ljungberg’s best form came in the second half of the 2001–02 season, when Arsenal won their second Premier League and FA Cup double. Following a knee injury to Robert Pires, Ljungberg scored in most of Arsenal’s remaining games, including a stunning finish for Arsenal’s second goal in the 2–0 FA Cup Final win over Chelsea. Ljungberg had scored many important and vital goals for Arsenal throughout the season. He scored an equaliser against Manchester United, in a game where Arsenal went on to win 3–1. He was instrumental in Arsenal’s 2–1 win against Liverpool at Anfield where he won a penalty which Thierry Henry scored and then he slotted in a sweet finish from a Robert Pires cross. He scored a nearly identical goal again against Liverpool at Highbury three weeks later, where the matched ended up being a 1–1 draw. Ljungberg ended the 2001–02 season scoring 17 goals in all competitions. Ljungberg was the first player to score a goal at an FA Cup final outside England when Arsenal lost against Liverpool in 2001 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. A year later, against Chelsea, he became the first player in 40 years to score in consecutive FA Cup Finals. He also scored a penalty in the shootout in Arsenal’s 2005 FA Cup Final victory over Manchester United. He was most comfortable on either wing in midfield, though he could play centrally in a 4–5–1 formation or as a second striker. Ljungberg became a regular in Arsenal’s starting lineup following the departure of Emmanuel Petit and Marc Overmars in the summer of 2000. For several seasons he played a major role for the club including being a member of the unbeaten 49-game run for Arsenal. He had to fight with constant injury problems and occasionally severe bouts with migraines; in 2005 a persistent hip injury led to fears he may have contracted cancer, which was unfounded. It transpired that he was suffering from blood poisoning caused by his large tattoos. Despite a persistent ankle injury, Ljungberg played for Arsenal in the 2–1 defeat by Barcelona in the Champions League Final in Paris on 17 May 2006. It was speculated in January 2007 that Ljungberg was being forced to leave Arsenal, after bosses became tired of a run of injuries restricting his play. “Ljungberg still has a lot to offer to Arsenal,” Arsène Wenger said, on 13 January 2007, at a Blackburn Rovers pre-match press conference, stressing the fact that Ljungberg will stay at Arsenal until the end of his contract in 2009. Ljungberg came back after a long injury in an FA Cup match against Bolton Wanderers, scoring a goal thirteen minutes before the end of extra time, earning Arsenal a place in the fifth-round tie of the FA Cup against Blackburn Rovers.[citation needed] In 2008, Ljungberg placed 11th in Arsenal.com’s Gunners’ Greatest 50 Players. West Ham United On 23 July 2007, after nine years at Arsenal, Ljungberg joined London rivals West Ham United on a four-year contract. Ljungberg made his West Ham United debut on the opening day of the 2007/08 Premier League season, in West Ham’s 0–2 home defeat by Manchester City on 11 August, a game in which he was also captain. After seven months at the club, Ljungberg finally scored his first goal for West Ham in the home match against Birmingham City on 9 February 2008, putting West Ham up 1–0, with the game finishing 1–1. Ljungberg also scored away at Sunderland a month later in a 1–2 defeat, being his final goal for the club. In his last game of the season, Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor accidentally landed on top of him while trying to jump over him, breaking his ribs. The injury sidelined Ljungberg for the rest of the season. In May, it was reported that Ljungberg was offered £3m to tear up his contract. This was quickly dismissed by both Ljungberg’s agents, Claes Elefalk and Scott Duxbury, West Ham’s chief executive. In June 2008, Ljungberg retired from the Swedish National team stating, “The simple fact is the physical strain of playing on the national team and in club football for such a long time has finally taken its toll. And that is why I have decided to concentrate on playing for West Ham United and that is where my focus will be.” Following the start of training camp, Ljungberg was nowhere to be seen. Many speculated a transfer was in the works despite Elefalk’s claims that Ljungberg was to return. Days later, Ljungberg agreed to terminate his contract only after one year into the four-year deal for a sum of £6 million. Ljungberg stated afterwards, “I gave my all at West Ham and enjoyed my time there but the decision is the best for the both of us. Now, I will take my time to consider my football future.” Read More at https://xynews.co/meet-freddie-ljungberg-arsenal-interim-manager/

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said it would ensure that 60 per cent of the drugs being imported into the country were manufactured locally. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the agency, said this at a news conference, on Monday in Abuja. She stressed the need for the agency to ensure the local pharmaceutical manufacturing sector thrived. She said a significant amount of substandard and falsified drugs were creeping into the country. “We want the local manufacturing sector to thrive; we want a situation whereby 60 per cent of the country’s products are manufactured locally,” Mrs Adeyeye said. She said that a significant amount of substandard and falsified medicines were being imported “as unregistered or registered but with compromise on the content after approval to become substandard.” “One of the drives of my administration is to encourage local manufacturing for products that can be manufactured in Nigeria,” the NAFDAC boss said. She stated that the agency now encouraged innovation from local manufacturers by giving five-year market exclusivity to the innovator- company with the capacity to meet the country’s demand. Mrs Adeyeye added that during the period, “there would be no approval of a similar product to ensure that products manufactured, imported, distributed and sold after registration or renewal of registration conformed with quality specifications”. She said that the agency had four laboratories, with ISO-17025 accreditation across the country, to test the quality of medicines, vaccines test kits and other biological products. Mrs Adeyeye said NAFDAC had overhauled its testing of products coming from China and India by re-certification of the ‘clean report’ and ‘analysis agents’ as well as laboratories from those countries. This, she said, was aimed at ensuring that the imported products were tested by qualified laboratories. The official said part of the restrictions was streamlining the pre-shipment testing, with testing done post-shipment. We would like to, again, for the record reiterate that our Senior Pastor, Rev. Biodun Fatoyinbo has never had anything personal to do with her. Busola was not raped by Rev. Biodun Fatoyinbo and she had never been in a relationship with him either. “We are not unaware that certain pastors that felt threatened by the unprecedented growth of COZA and the grace of God upon His Servant are after some of our members, just making every effort to cash in on the attack against God’s servant. There was nothing they had not done behind the scene until this rape scandal. They are accusing our Pastor of snatching their members. Some are even asking why he couldn’t remain in Ilorin. Our focus is the Kingdom of God and winning souls for Christ. COZA is home to those who have sold out to Jesus. At COZA, we believe that every sent servant of God has his or her harvest field given to him or her by God and not by poaching souls or believers of another ministry.” COZA urged: “those sponsoring these evils to desist however if they do not, the God of vengeance will visit them. They should let Rev. Biodun Fatoyinbo continue freely with the divine mandate that our Lord Jesus Christ gave him. It is ungodly and sinful to be used by satan against the anointed.” Source: https://xynews.co/revelation-fatoyinbo-never-raped-busola-coza/

Is there anything Lionel Messi can’t do? Not only is he one of the greatest footballers ever to have played the game, but now he’s a fashion designer too. Well, it’s actually Messi’s sister Maria Sol who is the brains behind the operation. The line – creatively named ‘Messi’ and designed by Virginia Hilfiger – was launched at an event in Barcelona and Thursday. [tweet]https://twitter.com/BarcaWorldwide/status/1174751450452430849[/tweet] We have a feeling teenage boys might well be the target market based on the items unveiled so far. “It’s a dream come true,” Maria Sol Messi said at the launch. “Fashion is what I like the most, ever since I was a child, and it was always a dream of mine to be involved with a clothing brand. “I studied a lot to dedicate myself to this profession. President Donald Trump approves the deployment of U.S. forces to Saudi Arabia and UAE after an attack on oil facilities. The Pentagon says the U.S. will deploy additional troops and military equipment to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to beef up security, as President Donald Trump has at least for now decided against any immediate military strike on Iran in response to the attack on the Saudi oil industry. Defense Secretary Mark Esper says this is the first step, and he is not ruling out additional moves down the road. He says it’s a response to requests from the Saudis and the UAE to help improve their air and missile defences. Esper and Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said details of the deployments will be determined over the coming days. The Adamawa State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has refuted a media report that a teacher identified as Nathan (surname withheld) raped a 12-year-old schoolgirl in Namtari village of Yola South in Adamawa State. The chairman of the union in the state, Comrade Rodney Nathan, speaking with Tribune Online at the union’s secretariat in Yola, said the claims made by Adamawa Police command, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), was premature, as according to him, “Proper investigations were not carried out before going to the press.” Comrade Rodney told Tribune Online that the relationship between the teacher in Adamawa State and the schoolgirl was a known one to the parents of the girl and the society (Namtari) at large. He said that as of the time, Mr Yusuf was arrested, the keys to his room were with the girl in question, which he said suggested that the duo were consciously engaged in a mutual relationship. However, while condemning rape as a crime, he vowed to decisively deal with any teacher found in the act. The NUT chairman contended that “one cannot call a mutual relationship between a schoolgirl and her teacher who are mutually in love a rape case.” He said from the report submitted by a panel of enquiry set up by NUT to investigate the matter, it became known that the schoolgirl, a student of Government Secondary School (GSS), and Nathan, a primary school teacher in Namtari, had been lovers for at least, six months. Also, the NUT chairman the investigation committee’s report revealed that the schoolgirl “is carrying a six-month pregnancy, an indication that a long term relationship had existed between the teacher and the schoolgirl.” The NUT chairman, further queried the claims be security agents, as he asked: “At what point did the rape take place, was it six months ago, or now that it was discovered the schoolgirl is carrying a six-month pregnancy? Comrade Rodney blamed the parents of the minor for encouraging the relationship, as it was reported that the accused teacher was always in her house and her parents were aware of the relationship. THE proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been accused of whipping up sentiments to win the sympathy of the Ndigbo by its claim that the police were planning to arrest the father of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Debunking the claim, the Abia State Police Commissioner (CP), Ene Okon, said the group was blackmailing the police by raising the alarm about the presence of policemen and other security personnel around Kanu’s home. The IPOB claimed also that the target of the security agencies was to arrest Kanu’s father, who reportedly arrived his compound almost two years after his compound was invaded by soldiers. But, Okon said the police have no such plans. Also on Monday, the Labour and Employment Minister, Dr. Chris Ngige, and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nze Modestus Umenzekwe, reminded members that IPOB was set up as a non-violent organisation. In a telephone interview with our reporter on Monday, CP Okon said: “What IPOB has given to you people is completely false. As a matter of fact, we received an intelligence report that IPOB is going to have a meeting in Nnamdi Kanu’s house. ALSO READ: Bizzare – Son Fakes Kidnap to Defraud Dad of N500,000 “They prepared also for a protest over the alleged killing of their members during the Operation Python Dance and as an organisation that is charged with maintenance of law and order and to ensure peace, based on the intelligence that we gathered, we have to fortify the already existing police points within the area, which has been there for the past two years. “All that we did is to put in a number of police in that area to ensure that there is peace. No policeman entered Nnamdi Kanu’s house or his father’s house. “IPOB is pushing out propaganda to blackmail the police. The police didn’t even know whether Nnandi Kanu’s father is at home or not. Under what offence will the police go to arrest Nnamdi Kanu’s father; a 90-years-old man? “If the police have anyone to arrest, it is Nnamdi Kanu because he has been declared wanted and not the father. “It is mere propaganda or blackmail to win the sympathy of the Igbo by the IPOB. Remember that IPOB has been proscribed by law and they remain proscribed. “Any of their activities and gathering is illegal. If we get intelligence of their gathering which will disrupt the peace of the area, I don’t think that we should sit back and look at them disturbing the peace of the area.” Ngige and Umenzekwe recalled how IPOB was set up as a violent organisation. Speaking with The Nation in Awka, the one-time Anambra governor said that IPOB was registered by the former Ohaneze Ndigbo President-General, the late Dr. Dozie Ikedife, and other big wigs from the Southeast. Ngige, who once represented the Anambra Central Senatorial District, noted that what was going on in the group was not part of the work plan. The minister said he visited the United States (U.S.) and was welcomed well by IPOB members, instead of attacking him, adding that they knew he fed them when he held the fort as governor. He said the proscribed IPOB should follow the workplan when it was formed instead of being a menace to the society, adding that the Shi’iite group was also proscribed by the Federal Government and not only IPOB. The Igbo leader chided some evangelists for “killing Ndigbo” through what he called misinformation by them on the pulpits, warning that they should desist from such act. Chief Umenzekwe said what Ndigbo needed was peace and not war. He told The Nation: “We have some of our leaders as ministers at Abuja and we need to follow them. Sen Ike Ekweremadu is one of the Igbo leaders and he has served this country well as deputy Senate president. Why should IPOB attack him outside our shores? “Let us queue behind our leaders and apply to avoid violence because violence will not bring peace. We have fought a war in the past we don’t want any war again. “There are more civil ways of making our agitations known. The issue of harassing him abroad is wrong and condemnable and we will never support that from IPOB or any other group. The Operatives of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad, a unit of the Lagos Police Command have arrested a tricycle rider otherwise known as ‘Keke Maruwa’ after stealing the tricycle over four months ago. The suspect, Tosin Abolaji, 25-year-old, was arrested in Ikeja, where he was using the stolen ‘keke’ for transport business. The ‘Keke’ was given to him by one Emmanuel sometimes in April 2019 to enable him to raise some funds to cater for his family. According to sources close to both parties, ‘Keke’ operators always engage themselves in shift ride, where a rider after working for hours and wish to rest, would hand over his ‘Keke’ to another rider on agreed time to return the keke back to the owner. The suspect, Tosin had told Emmanuel that he was hungry and needed to work with Emmanuel’s keke for few hours. Unknown to Emmanuel who thought he was helping, Tosin had an ulterior motive of stealing the newly bought ‘Keke’. Emmanuel, narrating his ordeal after the ‘Keke’ was recovered by police, stated that he got the tricycle on hired purchase from a micro-finance bank before it was stolen by his friend. “I was arrested by the bank after I could not meet up with the return payment plan agreement I had with the bank. I begged the bank to please allow me to talk to my colleagues who can assist me in getting a Keke which I can be riding to pay back the debt while I continue to search every nooks and cranny”, Emmanuel said. “I have searched almost the whole of Lagos tricycle garages for my ‘Keke’, begged all other friends in the neighbourhood maybe they can help me with Tosin’s whereabout but I was told he had cut contact with everybody in the area after the incident. It was during the search that I learnt Tosin was a thief as colleagues who knew him well also shared their experiences about him, collecting colleagues’ ‘Keke’ and absconding with it for days without the knowledge of the owners”. He added, “after four months of rigorous search for my ‘Keke’, a good Samaritan who saw Tosin around Ikeja hinted me. I quickly alerted the police and they arrested him and recovered my tricycle”. Sources said that after the recovery, it was discovered Tosin had changed so many things in the ‘keke’ making it difficult for the owner to recognize his tricycle. They added that so many stickers had been pasted on the tricycle to make it unrecognisable. According to the PPRO, DSP Bala Elkanah, incident like this can be mitigated by commercial riders in the State if only they can desist from exchanging their valuable means of transportation with their colleagues who might not share the same interest with them. He also advises them to be law-abiding while doing their daily business. The case has been transferred to the ‘AREA G’ Police command where the matter was earlier reported for further investigations. No fewer than 393 suspects have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for their alleged involvement in various financial crimes in Kano and Edo states. Briefing the press in Kano yesterday, the zonal head of the commission, Assistant Commissioner of Police Akaninyene Ezima, said that the suspects were arrested between January and August 2019. He further noted that 51 of the suspects have been charged to court, adding that the other cases are at various stages of investigation by the commission. He, however, assured that the commission in the zone has mapped out new lines of intelligence and strategies with a view to fighting cyber crimes in the society. A Twitter user with the handle @Hejeoma Posted a Video on Twitter of how Mortuary attendance and others decided to play dead man prank on a new worker. In the video, one of the attendants with the new worker were seen carrying a corpse. They hurriedly rushed out and locked the door of the morgue on the new staff who was not suspicious of their action. The man was seen trying to force the door opened but he could not. As he looked back, he saw the dead body rising up. He became more frightened and was trying to block the ‘rising dead’. As he was struggling to try to escape, two other workers hiding inside the building he was quickly rushed out to save him from fainting/collapsing and revealed to him that it was a prank. A man in Alabama just had his sentence changed so that he’ll be getting out of prison in the next few days. His crime: Stealing $50.75 from a bakery 36 years ago. Alvin Kennard was 22 years old when he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole back in 1984. Alabama state law at the time mandated that since it was his fourth offence, the judge had no other option than to sentence him to life in prison. That law, the Habitual Felony Offender Act, has since been changed so that judges now have the option of giving fourth-time offenders the possibility of parole. But when that change took place in the early 2000s it wasn’t made retroactive, so it didn’t automatically prompt a re-sentencing in Kennard’s case. Instead, it was the curiosity of a judge that led to the re-sentencing of Kennard, who is now 58 years old. “The judge, in this case, noticed how odd it seemed that someone was serving life without parole for a $50 robbery,” said Kennard’s attorney, Carla Crowder, who said it was Jefferson County Bessemer Cutoff Circuit Judge David Carpenter who saw Kennard’s case when some documents came across his desk. “This was a judge that kind of went out of his way,” Crowder told ABC News. Assistant District Attorney Bill North said that Kennard’s behaviour in prison played a role in the judge’s decision when, on Wednesday, the judge decided to change Kennard’s sentence to time served, effectively prompting his release in the coming days. North said that “other than a few ‘settling in’ issues 30 years ago, [Kennard] appeared to be a pretty exemplary inmate.” The underlying reason why Kennard, a man who now lives in the faith-based wing of Donaldson Correctional Facility, was sentenced to life without parole for the robbery of Highlands Bakery in 1983 was that he had been previously convicted of three non-violent property crimes. In 1979, back when Kennard was 18 years old, he pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree burglary in connection with a break-in at an unoccupied service station, his pleading documents state. For those three charges, all of which were tied to that one incident, he was sentenced to three years’ probation. The next time he was convicted, for the bakery robbery — which was committed with a pocket knife and involved no injuries — he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. If the same crime had been committed today, and current sentencing standards were used, even with prior offences taken into account, Kennard’s pleading document states that he would have been eligible for a minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum sentence of 21 years in prison. Crowder said that since the change in the sentencing laws was not retroactive, there are upwards of 250 prisoners who were similarly sentenced and remain behind bars in part because they simply do not have attorneys pushing for their cases to be re-sentenced. “As incredible as this opportunity is for Mr. Kennard and as happy as we are for him, we know that there are hundreds of similarly situated incarcerated people in the state who don’t have attorneys, who don’t have a voice,” Crowder said. “As this state grapples with the Department of Justice involvement and unconstitutional prisons, I would hope our lawmakers, our courts and our governor would do more to address these injustices.” Read More: https://xynews.co/man-who-spent-36-years-in-prison-for-stealing-50-from-a-bakery-is-now-set-to-be-freed/
