APC Governors, party’s NWC cut presidential contenders to five, eliminate 17 The latest development appears a blow to the plot by the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu to foist Senate President Ahmed Lawan on the party as a consensus candidate. ByMusikilu Mojeed June 7, 2022 2 min read Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the party’s National Working Committee have recommended five aspirants for today’s presidential primary of the party while advising the remaining 17 contenders to step down. Those who got the nod of the governors and party leaders to remain in the race are former Lagos Governor, Bola Tinubu; a former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi; Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, who disclosed the development on Tuesday morning, said the list of shortlisted “frontline candidates” has been presented to President Muhammadu Buhari, who he said okayed the recommendation. “The president told us any of these five are qualified to be president and have contributed to the party (APC). He said he is comfortable with any of them,” said Mr Lalong while speaking on Channels TV flagship programme, Sunrise. “Our recommendation is to enable us to give direction for the party as we go into the primary. We cannot go with everybody, but in our view, these are the people we think should remain.” The Plateau Governor said the five recommended aspirants were also advised to hold consultations among themselves to enable them further reduce the number of contestants. On how the list of “frontline” aspirants was arrived at, Mr Lalong said, “The screening committee submitted a report. All the contestants were graded even though none of them was disqualified.” Mr Lalong, however, added that contestants not shortlisted were free to disagree with the recommendation and proceed to contest at the primary. ⓘ The latest development appears a blow to the plot by the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu to foist Senate President Ahmed Lawan on the party as a consensus candidate. The APC presidential screening committee had last week okayed 23 aspirants for today’s primaries. They are Jigawa Governor, Abubakar Badaru; a former Minister of the Niger Delta Ministry, Godswill Akpabio; a former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; a former Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun; Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello; Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, businessman, Jack -Rich, Tein; President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan; a former Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba; a former Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya On and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Also cleared are a former Governor of Lagos, Bola Tinubu; Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi; a former Governor of Imo, Rochas Okorocha, Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade; General Overseer of Latter Rain Assembly, Tunde Bakare, and a former Zamfara State Governor, Sani Yerima. Also on the list are a former President of the Senate, Ken Nnamani; a former Minister of Information, Ikeobasi Mokelu; a former Speaker of the House of Representatives; Dimeji Bankole; a Deputy Senate Leader, Ajayi Borroffice; US-based pastor, Felix Nicholas and the only woman in the race, Uju Ken-Ohanenye. Mr Nnamani stepped down from the race on Monday saying the APC had failed to do justice to the south of Nigeria. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/535273-apc-governors-partys-nwc-cut-presidential-contenders-to-five-eliminate-17.html |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) is, on paper, the favourite to win the 2023 presidential election — by virtual of being the ruling party. That is why utmost attention was paid to those who bought the presidential nomination forms despite the N100 million price tag. It was initially presumed that the party would zone its presidential ticket to the south, but Abdullahi Adamu, the national chairman, has been foot-dragging. On Monday, he announced Ahmad Lawan, the senate president, as the consensus candidate but this was immediately opposed by members of the national working committee and the party’s governors. The governors insist that the ticket must go to the south. Advertisement President Muhammadu Buhari, who has been tagged the “super delegate”, was expected to play the most important role in deciding who will be the party’s flag bearer but he has said he would not impose any aspirant, even though many observers doubt his neutrality. Why is APC afraid of a transparent primary? |
I HAVE ANOINTED NO ONE, THERE SHALL BE NO IMPOSITION, SAYS PRESIDENT BUHARI President Muhammadu Buhari, Monday afternoon cleared all doubts about where he stands on the choice of a presidential candidate for the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, declaring before the party’s 14 governors of northern states that he has “no preferred candidate," and has "anointed no one,” and is determined to ensure that “there shall be no imposition of any candidate on the party.” Speaking at a meeting with the Governors at the State House, Abuja, President Buhari said the party is important and its members must be respected, and made to feel they are important. The President said he had a clear mind about what he was doing and asked the APC governors to feel the same way: “You were elected as I was. Have a clear mind as I have. God gave us the chance; we have no reason to complain. We must be ready to take pain as we take the joy. Allow the delegates to decide. The Party must participate, nobody will appoint anybody.” Earlier in their addresses, the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Governor Simon Bako Lalong and Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of the Progressive Governors Forum, said they had come to affirm the position of the Northern Governors that the party’s candidate in the presidential election shall come from the southern part of the country. They apologised to the President for the leakage of their signed memorandum which was not in support of any particular candidate and gave assurances to the President on their readiness to accept his leadership on the matter. I think Adamu has a plan to destroy APC and hand over power back to PDP. He must be in the pay roll of Atiku. |
Only him knows what he is scheming. Let him come out openly to say. Is he afraid of what? |
Hahaha. Adamu is working too hard. But it is too late for him. He is powerless. A pure tribalist. |
[quote author=Hellonearth post=113488692]U see what am saying. We from the south don have political brains. U will not vote Peter Obi I will not vote a Yoruba Then Atiku from the north will win again Then we will continue to shout MAGINALIZATION. FOOLS[/quote VERY BIG FOOLS.KIDS ALL OVER. |
PaChukwudi44:No he spoke the truth. We have left politics for igbo traders to play. Alaba and main market Onitsha traders. The south east has never had it too bad. See the stupid man Uzo Kalu and we are praising him self for all his selfish comments recently. See how the west arm twisted Buhari to get what they want. What I see in this forum daily is nonsense comments and posts from igbos. Annoying and unnintelligent posts. |
HelipsTech:So you think you will leave the owner of ACN and give Osibanjo ticket? How do we think? |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday said the southern region should produce the presidential flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC).https://www.thecable.ng/breaking-buhari-throws-weight-behind-southern-presidential-candidate/amp

Indispensable85:I also surprised. He is El Rufai's man. |
Cantonese:He is El Rufai's man. Go check his name |
PrinceOfLagos:Buhari is not a foolish man. He suffered most as well from abuse and character assination to the extent they said the man himself is not Buhari |
I did not see what this man said wrong in this speech. I was waiting to hear where he called the Ogun governor this one sitting down there. But did not hear it. Is the recording doctored? |
Who did this to us? Why must igbos create enemies for themselves for things that did not concern us. |
This newspaper has been spilling fake for past two weeks. |
Indispensable85:I tell you. I was glued to the television during his interview and even forgot my food on the table |
I know it is a fake news because I saw that tweet earlier even before Tinubu visited Ogun. The management of nairaland has o do something because this forum is becoming too toxic and childish. |
Ttalk:APC is heading to disintegration. Many suits will follow |
They are not voting in the primary. |
There is no nonsense I will not read about Tinunu here. |
This Governor just don't want to return back in 2023. With the combination of Osoba, Tinubu and Amosun( if they align against him) he is in trouble The VP he is running to don't have any structure to save him. |
lecowas:APC must do everything possible to appease Tinubu if he is not the annointed candidate otherwise APC will be in serious trouble. Buhari is not a politician. Once he leaves Aso rock nobody will bother to look his way again. I am also sure in this election he will not be a factor. He lost the election in the last election if not be rigging. He is outgoing and this one will be worse. They need Tinubu to hold the party. Osibanjo also is not a party man forget about the hype. If Tinubu leaves APC, that will be the end of that party. Take this to the bank. |
lecowas:Do you take anybody that speaks the truth for Tinubu? You want me to make thr childish comments you guys are making her? |
lecowas:Please take Five. 100 percent correct. Let us not allow hatred over crowd our judgement. |
lecowas:You are a kid in politics. Buhari is not in the ballot. |
I am seeing a possible Atiku will allow Tinubu nominate a Vice. If this happens, it is going to be a knockout. |
