Jobs/VacanciesRe: NCDMB 2020 Oil and Gas EH & GT Jobs by TJ0987(f): 10:11am On Mar 18, 2021
Guys, what do you think will be the fate of those of us hoping that the exercise will be conducted on merit? Because the tales of lobbying flying left and right are not very encouraging. I believe this is the type of job that the "powers that be" would want for their children/wards, leaving n-power for the common man. I'm just thinking aloud and asking questions.
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by TJ0987(f): 10:24am On Mar 02, 2021
I understand. Thank you.
kastgeraldino:
You have a fair profile, but the truth is that nothing from your profile stands out. Try and ace the GRE. I don't think any recommendations, no matter how lofty, would change the outcome. It is even hard for folks with 3.3/4 undergrad GPA. Masters GPA matters a bit but they care a lot more about undergrad. You can't change those but the only thing you can change is your GRE. Alternatively, apply to lower ranked schools but believe me great GRE scores can move mountains, especially at lower ranked schools. Hope I'm not too harsh.

To be honest, I simply can't afford the deficit, no matter how small. Most PhD programs are fully funded and that was my assurance, but with masters I won't be able to pay for the resulting fees. I thank you for your concern, and wish you the best.
Fall2021:
Please don’t give up yet. Try western Illinois university. Apply for masters.

Bsc 3.1/4, Msc 3.5/4 (wes icap), Gre q151, v157 a3.5, toefl w28, s29, r29, l29. No publications, I've been working in a federal govt agency for 5 years, and my work experience led me to want to carry out the sociological research I want to do. My bsc is in Urban and Regional Planning (2009), and my Msc is in Environmental Pollution Control (2012).
nelmc:
Wow. These are top schools. How was your profile like?

Your GRE score, GPA, first class or 2nd class?
Any publication?

The group can easily recommend schools that fits your profile if we know these info.
Educational ServicesRe: Studying In US And Canada Faq's by TJ0987(f): 8:35am On Mar 02, 2021
Unfortunately, I got rejected to all 4 PhD programs. Maybe the PhD isn't for me. I wish you all the best on this journey, and thank you for your responses.
TJ0987:
I apologise for rushing to ask questions before properly reading through the entire thread.
I have now done so and I realise that this question has been asked and even answered.
I am hoping to get full funding for a PhD in the US (PhD Urban Studies).
My profile:
BSC 3.12/4, msc 3.5/4
GRE Q 151, V 157, AWA 3.5
Toefl (W28, S29, L29, R29 = 115)
My schools of Choice:
CUNY, sociology PhD
Georgia State, Urban Studies PhD
Ohio State, City and Regional Planning PhD
Uni of California Irving, Sociology PhD
I am told that as a first step, I need to get in touch with faculty members who could likely supervise me, but I'm so scared of rejection, because I've gone this path before. Hopefully, a few of them agree to supervise me. I really hope luck shines on me this time around.
Thank you Dafe for all that you do. I pray God rewards your selflessness.

Yes, a friend suggested I change my recommenders.
mulero23:
Ask admission committee for a copy of your recommendation letters if the policy allows you have a copy of them. Don't underate the power of some destiny destroyers! Then I would say you give out your SOP to experts to check for you. USA admission is straightforward just like plug and play kind-of, the funding and visa is the real deal...
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by TJ0987(f): 11:34pm On Mar 01, 2021
Thank you. I applied to Georgia State University (Urban Studies PhD), Ohio State University PhD City and Regional Planning, City University of New York (Sociology), and University of california irvine (Sociology).
I want to do a PhD in Sociology.
NigPatriot:
Sorry about this sir.

Firstly, let me start off by saying this; PhDs are far more competitive than Masters. With that established, I adviced you earlier, have a holistic review of your application details; starting from your statement of purpose, your Recommendations (this is very important especially for PhD applications). What I did during my application was to ask my references (if they can) to send me what they submitted. - most of them did.

What I'm trying to say is this, something might actually be "off" about your applications. Or maybe you have very ambitious schools - do you mind stating the entirety of schools you applied to?

Dont feel weary my friend? And as I said earlier, some schools still have their applications running. Aim at those.

The race isn't always to the fastest it's for those who won't give up!

I wish you well and hoping to hear some good news soon.

Okay I guess, but I really don't know, maybe you can tell me.
Chonco:
How's your statement of Purpose?

You need to apply to more schools
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by TJ0987(f):
I would love to, however, the process of searching for faculty members who might be interested in taking me on (for supervision), isn't exactly a straight forward one. I mean finding a member of faculty whose research focus is in line with what I also want to do.
Stevenssen:
Can you apply to at least two more schools?
You still have time to send in applications for fall and waiting on only one school is risky.
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by TJ0987(f): 11:28pm On Feb 28, 2021
I applied to 4 schools. So far, 3 rejections and 1 pending decision. Fingers crossed...

I guess that was the mistake I made. I just applied to schools that I felt had a strong research emphasis on the field I wanted to pursue, not minding if they are safe or not. The only relatively safe school I can point at on my list is GSU. The other 3 I applied to are: Ohio state University (City and Regional Planning), UC Irvine (Sociology), CUNY (Sociology). I hope I can pick myself up and apply to other schools, but i feel dejected and rejected already.
Many, Many thanks for your comforting words.
NigPatriot:
Good day sir,
I must say you have a relatively competitive profile. It's surprising to have 3 rejections already, May I ask, did you apply to "safe" schools?
Safe schools are schools that are less competitive, and one would most certainly get an admission if you meet their basic requirements.

In stating this, don't feel heartbroken, this journey is for the strong, and relentless. The deadline for applications of some schools still fall within March. What that means is that you have a chance to still filling applications. Review your statament of purpose, check wat might be your foibles and replace them with your idiosyncrasies. Confirm from your referrals are you sure they are providing spectacular recommendations? If you need to change some please do. I'm recapitulation, have a holistic review of your profile, and apply to more schools. Fall 2021 is still very attainable, and it's in your hands.

I wish you well.
TravelRe: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by TJ0987(f):
I sent am email to the grad program coordinator, and he said the week of 15th (which was this past week), is the speculative time for admission decisions to be sent out, but as at friday, nothing. I will send another email by monday to know where I stand. God knows I've never felt this kind of heartbreak before. I feel so heavy. As per gradcafe, I've never seen anything on GSU's Urban Studies Program there. Maybe because its a relatively new program that was started 2 years ago. My profile: GRE q151, v157, a3.5, toefl slrw 29,29,29,28 (116), bsc 3.12/4, msc 3.5/4, work experience of 5 years in a federal parastatal.
Thank you for your kind words.
Izanghi:
Don't worry they'll give you in Jesus name, i can't tell you not to have anxiety over your admission status because i had it too while waiting for mine, and i must tell you that this fall admission was bloody, maybe because most schools that waived GRE based their admission on CGPA in place of GRE and hence your CGPA needed to be very high most time to convince them for admission, hence my advice to you are these:
1. check gradcafe to see if they've issued out admission, to know your stand
2. If they have ( or they've not), mail the admission officer to kindly let you know your admission status in order to know your next plan.
You'll hear good news in Jesus name and your efforts will not go to waste.

Hello Ma'am. Isn't it a bit too late to be applying for fall 2021 at this time? Or do you mean fall 2022? From what I heard, funding in GSU is really good, and their acceptance rate is high enough.

Well done guys.. I’ve learnt so much from this platform.

I want apply with my husband as my F-2, please can I get tips on what to do and what to avoid?

I’m looking at masters in economics in Georgia state University, Georgia institute of technology or Clark Atlanta university (fall 2021).

I’ll apply after I take my GRE, any information on scholarship and graduate assistantship will be greatly appreciated, I’ve sent mails to the school and I’m waiting for responses. I’ve also searched online, but I’m open to hearing from a mentor here with direct or indirect personal experience.

Hello Brother, I have a cousin with a BSC in Chemistry, and I want to encourage him to tow this schooling in US path, preferably for a PhD. I wonder if I could ask him to get in touch with you? Perhaps you might have an advice or 2 for him, (you being an expert in the field).
Apologies, I just realized your field isn't chemistry. All the same, with your kind permission, I would ask him to get in touch, seeing as you have successfully secured not just admission but also funding.

Guys please, do first generation college attendees have greater chances of admission for doctoral degrees if they indicate it in the application form? Or should I just tell the truth?

Also, should I state the other institutions I have applied to as requested in the application form? Or would it hurt my chances if I state the other schools I have applied to.

More questions to come guys, please kindly assist me.
