striktlymi: Hi Tobe,

Long time!

I am not exactly sure what context you are looking at the topic but irrespective of the angle you are looking at it, I am of the opinion that the viewpoints may be summarized into:

1) Public religious activities at an 'institutional' level.
2) Public religious activities at a private level.

The first item is basically an act that is promoted by the organisation in question. These organisations may be publicly 'owned' e.g the government or privately owned e.g a company or school.

For publicly owned organisations, the only time I may support demonstrating religious activities publicly at an institutional level would be when we are dealing with a homogenous population where the people basically are of thesame religion and the move to allow this public demonstration of faith is directly from the majority of the people.

But when the population in question is heterogenous e.g a country like Nigeria where we have people of diverse 'faiths' or lack of one, then I am of the opinion that demonstrating support for public religious activities for any group at an institutional level would not augur well for the spirit of justice and equity for all.

Now, if the organisation is privately owned, we can argue that the management of each private organisation reserves the right to determine how the organisation is runned, especially when such organisation is owned by a religious body e.g a Church. In this case, I can understand management's support for public religious activities and I have no ish with it.

However, the second item: Exercising "Public religious activities at a private level", is quite different because it has to do with the individual and not the institution. I believe firmly that each individual should be allowed the right to exercise his or her religious activities publicly to the extent that it does not undermine 'order'.
at times i wander if you are a barrister,; a senior advocate of nigeria. Objective analysis of issues. Thanks

masonkz: While I was serving, the place I worked at always held prayers once a month, usually at the start of the month and in the morning before starting for the day. I took it as OK since it was just once a month, but I just didn't see the need though. I only enjoyed the refreshment and bonding periods after such prayer sessions.

Not in support of such. People have different religious views. Don't assume that everyone that works at the organisation is a christian.

Christianity Etc › Solar Eclipse To Reappear In 2014 To Signify The End Time’ by tobechi20(op): 11:13pm On Nov 29, 2013
Solar eclipse to reappear in 2014 to signify The End Time’

Founder and Leader of the Freedom Chapel International, Apostle Francis Amoako Atta has predicted that the rare solar eclipse will appear again in 2014 on two separate occasions to signify that the end time is near.
Apostle Amoako Atta stated that anybody who sees the solar eclipse should bear in mind that it is the sign of the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Speaking to members of his congregation in Accra, the Apostle called on Ghanaians, particularly Christians, to change their attitude from sin and seek the way of God and further quoted some parts of the Holy Bible to support his claim.

Recently, Ghanaians and other African countries observed a rare solar eclipse. According to scientists, it was first visible in the Southern United States before sweeping east across the Atlantic Ocean and the African continent.
He said seven years ago, God revealed to him that the solar eclipse will appear in 2013 and in the coming years until 2022, hence the indication of the end time and second coming of Christ.
The Freedom Chapel Founder and Leader further urged Ghanaians to repent and forgive each other as the spiritual world awaits everybody.

He also cautioned drivers to be careful as Christmas approaches since the lives of many travelling people are in their hands
Christianity Etc › Do You Support Public Religion Activity At Work-place by tobechi20(op):
Workplace prayer is becoming rampat

some offices hold prayer session weekly, monthly while others gather daily before day job to pray to their creator.

Others make a break eg 12-1 on wedsdays and compell all staffs to ghather for fellowship
These religion activity raises many questions

(a) do you support placing religious object in the office e.g crucifix, sticker, rosary etc

as a muslim, if you enter a building whose walls are surrounded with christian crucifix, and rosary, would you proceed to make purchase?
b) do you feel comfortable sharing an office with one of different religion who prays to ur face e.g a muslim who spreads mat on the floor and prays in front of you.

Does office prayer lead to tangeble increase in investment, sales, more consumers, more productivity

should conference rooms be used as fellowship ground?

Does employer have right to prohibit employee from engaging in religion practice in workplace without infringing in his right to religion
?

When ur colleague prays loudly ,thereby disturbing you.?what do you do?

Christianity Etc › What Car Does Your Pastor Use? by tobechi20(op): 4:02pm On Nov 22, 2013
It is common to see these pastors engaging in competition over who owns the most flashy and latest model of cars such as Lincoln Navigator, Escalade, Hummer 5 et al.

These Men of God are constantly seen riding in these gaudy automobiles, driving majestically to and fro town, at the expense of their poor congregants where they get their source of funding from.

Some of these eye-glittering automobiles, which are seen
It is important, however to mention here that these pastors, in some circumstances, attempt to polish their images by making occasional donations to Children’s Home and Prison Inmates but that can only be described as a flash in the pan, considering the huge amounts of monies they make on daily basis.

.
Rev.Mathew Ashimolow of the Kingsway International Church was quoted in BBC voice inset, to have said that the amount of money he makes within an hour is bigger than his late father’s whole lifetime earnings.

But how do they make such non-taxable income, from the poor and unsuspecting congregation.
The situation leaves one wondering if that is what God actually wants his servants to do; to enjoy while the majority of their followers suffer in hunger and poverty.

So watch out, the next time you see a flamboyant vehicle passing by you, it may not be the footballer, the musician or the movie star you admire so much, it may be your head pastor or the Imam of your mosque

Christianity Etc › Why Even Atheists Should Be Praying For Pope Francis by tobechi20(op): 12:31am On Nov 21, 2013
Only installed in March, Pope Francishas already become a phenomenon. His is the most talked-about name on the internet in 2013, ranking ahead of "Obamacare" and "NSA". In fourth place comes Francis's Twitter handle, @Pontifex. In Italy, Francesco has fast become the most popular name for new baby boys. Rome reports a surge in tourist numbers, while church attendance is said to be up – both trends attributed to " the Francis effect".

His popularity is not hard to fathom. The stories of his personal modesty have become the stuff of instant legend. He carries his own suitcase. He refused the grandeur of the papal palace, preferring to live in a simple hostel. When presented with the traditional red shoes of the pontiff, he declined; instead he telephoned his 81-year-old cobbler in Buenos Aires and asked him to repair his old ones. On Thursday, Francis visited the Italian president – arriving in a blue Ford Focus, with not a blaring siren to be heard.
Some will dismiss these acts as mere gestures, even publicity stunts. But they convey a powerful message, one of almost elemental egalitarianism. He is in the business of scraping away the trappings, the edifice of Vatican wealth accreted over centuries, and returning the church to its core purpose, one Jesus himself might have recognised. He says he wants to preside over "a poor church, for the poor". It's not the institution that counts, it's the mission.

Christianity Etc › Christianity Is Not Fully Based On Bible Alone by tobechi20(op): 8:44pm On Nov 20, 2013
Christianity is not defined solely by the Bible. That in fact, a Christian never even has to have read the Bible in order to be a Christian. That a Christian can still be a Christian even though they may pick and choose what they believe in the Bible, because it is not a demand that they follow the Bible .

My evidence: When Christianity first began, there was not a such thing as a Bible. When Paul was preaching his message, the New Testament had just began loosely forming in the aspect that he was writing letters (which were not scripture). Even the OT canon was not closed until after Paul was dead. And during the time of Paul, different groups subscribed to different works of Hebrew scripture.

The Christian canon was not even fully closed until many centuries later. The canon had not even started to be put together until around a century later. This means the the first Christians did not have a Bible. They may have had works that they believed to be scripture, but various groups subscribed to different scripture.

Even today, we see various scripture being held above others.
So obviously something else defined individuals who claimed to be Christians. And the same is true for today. A Bible does not define who a Christian is or what they believe. Just because it is in the Bible, does not mean that a Christian must follow it, or has to be defined by it. I think this has to be understood.
