Nigeria’s Information and Culture Minister, Lai Mohammed has sternly warned those calling for the breakup of Nigeria that some of our Professors may work in bakeries in neighbouring Togo just to keep body and soul together. He made this view known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday when he said: “Our challenge is more with the elites, not with the common people. Go to the remotest part of Nigeria today, you will see Nigerians from different tribes, cultures, and religions living together peacefully. Elites ought to take the lead in cementing the unity of the country, but when the elites start preaching tribal hatred, people believe them because they think they know better. Nigeria accounts for 70 per cent of West Africa’s population and if Nigeria should disintegrate today, we are going to overrun Benin Republic, Togo, Niger, and other neighbouring countries. The elites will suffer more because some professors could be working in bakeries in Togo just to survive. We saw it happened when the Liberians came here during their civil war. It is in their own enlightened interest that they should work to fix Nigeria. Many of them have more than one passport — American, British, Irish — and at the first crack of trouble, they are gone.” Source: https://theventrepublic.com/2021/04/22/nigerian-professors-may-work-in-togolese-bakeries-if-nigeria-disintegrates/ |

The United Kingdom (UK) has said that it will grant asylum to anybody in need of it as claims are considered on their individual merits in line with international standards. The British Government said it had a rich history of providing protection to those in need of it. The UK Visas and Immigration had released fresh guidelines to its decision makers on how to consider and grant asylum applications to IPOB members whose founder, Nnamdi Kanu, is now based in London. Kanu, who holds both Nigerian and British passports, escaped from Nigeria in 2018 after troops invaded his country home while he was facing trial on treasonable felony charges for criminal conspiracy, intimidation and membership of a proscribed organisation. In the guidelines titled, ‘Country Policy and Information Note Nigeria: Biafran secessionist groups,’ released in March, the UKVI, a division of the Home Office, directed its decision makers to consider if a person “who actively and openly supports IPOB is likely to be at risk of arrest and detention, and ill-treatment which is likely to amount to persecution.’’ “Those fleeing prosecution or punishment for a criminal offence are not normally refugees. Prosecution may, however, amount to persecution if it involves victimisation in its application by the authorities,’’ the 56-page document said. The Minister for Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed however criticized the UK’s position as being supportive of domestic terrorism. Senator Obinna Ogba said on Wednesday, April 21 that no amount of crisis in the south east zone will prevent them from producing the next President of the country. He made this view known when addressing a press conference after sponsoring a motion in the red chamber to stop the killings in his native Ebonyi state. He said: “Though there were pockets of crises in some of the states before now, but the rising wave of such crises resulting in wanton killings of innocent lives and destruction of property is political. “Why is it that it is when agitation for South East to have a taste of the Presidency in 2023 is gaining momentum that the senseless killings got intensified?” He also expressed grave concern over the poor security situation in the nation. According to him, one of such examples was the bedlam unleashed on people in Obeagu, Egedegede and Nkalaha communities in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State by suspected herdsmen on March 30, 2021. He opined that there was the urgent need for critical intervention by the Federal Government to stop the killings. The Federal Government has refused to take action on the terrorism allegations leveled against the Minister for Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami. The weekly Federal Executive Council meeting held today with Pantami in attendance. Information and Culture Minister, Lai Mohammed said that his issue wasn’t raised for discussion in the meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari. Pantami has since recanted on the statements which he admitted to have made while he was much younger. He said: “For 15 years, I have moved round the country while educating people about the dangers of terrorism. I have traveled to Katsina, Gombe, Borno, Kano states and Difa in Niger Republic to preach against terrorism. “I have engaged those with Boko Haram ideologies in different places. I have been writing pamphlets in Hausa, English and Arabic. I have managed to bring back several young persons who have derailed from the right path. “Some of the comments I made some years ago that are generating controversies now were based on my understanding of religious issues at the time, and I have changed several positions taken in the past based on new evidence and maturity. “I was young when I made some of the comments; I was in university, some of the comments were made when I was a teenager. I started preaching when I was 13, many scholars and individuals did not understand some of international events and therefore took some positions based on their understanding, some have come to change their positions later.” Source: https://theventrepublic.com/2021/04/21/we-ignored-pantamis-issue-at-fec-meeting-today-lai-mohammed/ |
Terrorism is as old as man. All through the ages man has always had the unbridled quest for domination and control through any available means no matter how obnoxious and repugnant. The invincibility of the United States who became a global power in 1945 after the Second World War was broken through the September 11, 2001 attack on her World Trade Centre in New York which led to the loss of thousands of lives. The reign of terror spread to London in 2004 when the famous Underground train station was bombed. Our own erudite Professor Pat Utomi narrowly escaped the cold hands of death in the blast. The advent of Boko Haram in 2002 and its militant approach in 2009 has brought terrorism closer to the doorsteps of Nigerians. Every day the press regales us with suicide bombings making mincemeat of a former assertion that we were once the happiest people on earth. To be associated with terrorism is worse than a mortal sin even if it is a mere joke. Ask Prince Harry who faced public opprobrium when he once wore a Swastika on Halloween day. The Daily Independent Newspapers owned by James Ibori first blew a story on April 11 that the Minister for Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami was a terrorist sympathizer. The report dubbed ‘Disquiet as America places Nigerian minister on watch list’ alleged that “America’s Intelligence Service” has placed Pantami on its watch list for his anti-American pro-jihadist beliefs and close alliance with Boko Haram founder, Muhammad Yusuf. The paper credited “Western Intelligence” with linking Pantami with Al-Qaeda leaders and paying glowing tributes to them in YouTube videos. It also cited “Middle Eastern Intelligence” sources that photos of Pantami and his jihadist allies are trending. The paper was to later retract the story and tender an apology but the Pandora’s Box had been open. NewsWire NGR dug out some old videos of Pantami having banter with Mohammed Yusuf only for them to retract it also and issue an unreserved apology. Sahara Reporters and Peoples Gazette dug up old videos of him which showed some amount of sympathy to international terrorist groups. With headlines such as “We are all happy whenever unbelievers are being killed: Minister Pantami”, “I support terrorist groups like Taliban, Al-Qaeda, not Boko Haram: Minister Pantami”, as well as “Boko Haram terrorists are our Muslim brothers, shouldn’t be killed like pigs: Minister Pantami” Peoples Gazette presented Mr Pantami as a religious bigot and an active supporter of international terrorism. Sahara Reporters followed the same track with the headline “I Support Terrorist Groups Like Taliban, Al-Qaeda, Not Boko Haram – Minister Pantami” and published an opinion article titled “Unmasking A Jihadi Masquerade: The Many Faces of Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami.” Both the report and the opinion piece harped on the Islamic doctrines and preachings of Mr Pantami which they posited to be in tune with global terrorism. Some Twitter influencers took to the micro blogging site to create a hashtag #ResignIsaPantami. Pantami bowing to public pressure said that he once had extremist views in his youth but had ‘repented’ of them. Some of his supporters opined that the reason for his persecution is because he stepped on some powerful toes in the current NIN sim registration as sim cards were not sold for some months leading to the massive loss of revenue by the telecommunications companies. A counter thread was created on Twitter opposing the call for him to resign. Terrorism is a grave issue and there should be zero tolerance for its sympathizers since it is a grave offence. We recall that the United States under Barack Obama liquidated Osama Bin Laden using the Naval seals and didn’t give him room for any form of trial despite its being the world’s bastion for the Rule of Law. The critical question to ask is how come Pantami made it to the Buhari cabinet when the Department for Security Services (DSS) is saddled with the onerous responsibility of screening potential ministers and other political appointees through rigorous security checks? How did this infraction slip them by? Terrorism has cost the loss of millions of lives and millions more have been greatly set back by becoming refugees, internally displaced persons with live worse than the Thomas Hobbesian definition of the state of nature. His admission of guilt at uttering those reprehensible statements should make President Muhammadu Buhari show him the door if he has been obdurate in his refusal to throw in the towel. In sane countries, he would have resigned after his guilt admission for the DSS to conduct unbiased investigations but alas we are unfortunate to be domiciled in a failed state where the Theatre of the Absurd reigns supreme! It is tyrannical of Buhari not to listen to the voice of Nigerians who want Pantami to be like the Shakespearean Caeser’s wife who should be above board in his dealings. Buhari has proven not to live up to his novel nomenclature in being a reformed democrat which he made known during his 2015 campaign after cynics reminded the emotionally battered electorate of his jailing of the fearless Nduka Irabor and Tunde Thompson then of the Guardian Newspapers under the infamous Decree 4. He has refused to hearken to the hoarse cry of bewildered Nigerians especially on social media to drop Pantami like a hot potato. Nigerians who fought with their blood and for some people paid the Supreme price for this joke of a democracy shouldn’t give up in their cry for Pantami to be forced to resign. The DSS will be biased in investigating him while he is still a minister. If Kemi Adeosun could resign after being found culpable by Premium Times in forging her NYSC credentials, then Pantami should not be spared either. What is sauce for the goose should be sauce for the gander! Public office holders should be mindful of their statements in public and private and terrorism sympathy should not be condoned in any form. The international community should come in. Sanctions should be meted out to Nigeria in a similar way that it occurred in November 1995 when the then General Sani Abacha led government hanged Ken Saro Wiwa and the Ogoni eight without a fair trial. Countries should slam a travel ban on Pantami and it should be extended to the Buhari government. We recall that during the Obama led Presidency, Leahy’s law was invoked to block the sale of arms to Nigeria to fight the Boko Haram insurgency. In a twist of Dejavu, Joe Biden was the then Vice-President. Let us see whether the US would be hypocritical in its fight against global terrorism in not making a scape goat out of Pantami. The Twitter warriors should not give up as Uhuru is near; the era of public officials showing contempt for Nigerians will soon be history. I join my countrymen in the loud cry that #Pantamimustresign! Source: https://theventrepublic.com/2021/04/20/pantami-should-resign-now-tony-ademiluyi/ |

Artiste and Disc Jockey, Florence Otedola a.k.a DJ Cuppy said that many celebrities lie a lot about living alluring lives. She said that she lives her life without any apologies to anyone. As gleaned from her Instagram page she said: “A lot of celebrities tell lies about how glamorous and smooth things always seem to be (for them). A lot of things happened in my personal life and career recently, and the truth is that the same people who praise me would be the same ones that would attempt to put one down. I could literally win a Grammy Award and some people would still think I am not good enough. That is why I do things that make me feel good and happy. “I am also making impact and helping people. The reason I do what I do is because I genuinely love it, with or without the limelight. If I want to sing about ice cream, release an album, grow fat or thin, or get married, I would do just that because it is up to me. Whatever I want to do, I do it unapologetically. Life is not about the best; it is about how one feels. A lot of people are very miserable behind closed doors. When I check (social media pages) of some people that make bad comments, (I realise that) they are going through some issues. People put their problems on other people and I think celebrities and influencers are easy targets. They forget they (celebs) are humans as well. So, don’t live your life for other people’s acceptance. They may not even accept you at the end of the day.” Source: https://theventrepublic.com/2021/04/18/many-celebrities-lie-about-living-alluring-lives-dj-cuppy/ |
The winner of Big Brother Nigeria Season 4, Mercy Eke is angry that some of her critics said that her phenomenal success can be traceable to a man. In a video uploaded on her YouTube channel she said: “In this part of the world, people believe a man is behind the success of a woman, whether she is married or single. I work hard for everything I own today. When people say a man is behind these things, I find it appalling. However, it does not get to me anymore because what else would one say? It only shows that my success is visible.” When quizzed by a fan as to her relationship with former housemate and American returnee, Ike Onyema she said: “Break up happened. We are done. That ship sank a long time ago. I am in a happy place and he is good as well. Stop flooding my timeline with this silly question; we are over. Popular businessman and philanthropist, Femi Otedola in a radio interview shared what made him a happy man. He said his billions which he thought would make him happy didn’t do so as what gave him joy at the end was his philanthropic gesture in purchasing wheel chairs for two hundred disabled children and physically handing them over to them. In his words: “I have gone through four stages of happiness in life and finally I understood the meaning of true happiness. The first stage was to accumulate wealth and means. But at this stage, I did not get the happiness I wanted.” “Then came the second stage of collecting valuables and items. But I realized that the effect of this thing is also temporary and the luster of valuable things does not last long. Then came the third stage of getting big projects. That was when I was holding 95% of the diesel supply in Nigeria and Africa. I was also the largest vessel owner in Africa and Asia. But even here I did not get the happiness I had imagined.” “The fourth stage was the time a friend of mine asked me to buy a wheelchair for some disabled children. Just about 200 kids. At the friend’s request, I immediately bought the wheelchairs. But the friend insisted that I go with him and hand over the wheelchairs to the children. I got ready and went with him.” Source: https://theventrepublic.com/2021/04/17/i-was-sad-despite-my-billions-femi-otedola/ “There I gave these wheelchairs to these children with my own hands. I saw the strange glow of happiness on the faces of these children. I saw them all sitting on the wheelchairs, moving around, and having fun. It was as if they had arrived at a picnic spot where they are sharing a jackpot winning.” “I felt real joy inside me. When I decided to leave one of the kids grabbed my legs. I tried to free my legs gently but the child stared at my face and held my legs tightly. I bent down and asked the child: Do you need something else? The answer this child gave me not only made me happy but also changed my attitude to life completely”. My mom was cleaning my room and saw the cream that I used to mix with lemons. She wasn’t angry. it was more her disappointment. So I stopped but I was always insecure about being dark.” She went on further to say: “I have a platform and I’m digging more into my responsibility for younger people,” she says. . When I started my career I wasn’t embracing who I was fully yet because I was just trying to crack into the market,” she says. “My first two singles were very American and it wasn’t very African. But then, as time went on, I just started seeing how powerful my platform was and how mothers would say, ‘My little girl really looks up to you.’ “And I feel like there’s so much pressure now and it’s going to get even worse with social media and there needs to be a balance. There need to be some people that are not too perfect. I know we want to look good. The Federal Government has abruptly cancelled the meeting that was supposed to have held today (Thursday) with the representatives of the striking polytechnic and judiciary workers. No reason was given for the cancellation as at the time of the writing of this report. Erstwhile Ekiti State Governor, Peter Ayodele Fayose has alleged that there was over voting at the recent PDP Zonal Congress held in Osogbo but he and his supporters decided to overlook it and move on in the greater interest of the party. Amb. Taofeek Arapaja, the candidate backed by Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde polled 343 votes to beat Eddy Olafeso, who scored 330 votes to emerge as new National Vice Chairman (Southwest). Olafeso was supported by Fayose “Whatever may be our reservations on the issue of over-voting, we have chosen to look at the larger picture, which is the PDP. “We must, therefore, use our energy and resources to rebuild the party. “Arapaja’s 343 and Olafeso’s 330 votes, has (sic) simply shown strength on the two sides. This should be explored by the party, going forward. “I thank the National Working Committee (NWC) for helping to bring this congress behind us.” But Makinde described the congress as peaceful and orderly.
