Let us see how things will turn out. But in truph, Tinubu is a force to reckon with. |
Chidinma not-so-subtly flicked her eyes to Christy. “I’m not in love with ANY of the Pretty-Young-Things,” I stated firmly. Chidinma mused on that for a second before shrugging. “If you say so.” I shook my head and gestured toward the school. “C’mon, let’s get to class.” Uchechi and I shared our first and second periods, so we always walked together from one to the other. Uchechi was busy talking to the teacher before class (she was a pretty driven student), so there wasn’t time for us to talk before the period started, but as soon as we walked out the door she wrapped her arms around mine, leaned in close, and started whispering just loud enough for me to hear while we kept walking to our next class. “Are you or are you not in love with one of the Pretty-Young-Things girls and saving yourself for her?” “Ah, hell,” was my only response. Her accent somehow made her sound pretty angry. “So Anna and I think it’s either Christy or Tonia. Christy because you two have always been close, and Tonia because it’s clear you’ve always been super attracted to each other, you think she’s the most gorgeous thing you’ve ever seen, and if it wasn’t for The Rule you two would’ve hoEmmad up already.” “I’m not in love with either of them. Christy’s like my little sister and that’s never gonna happen. and yes, Tonia is super hot, but I’m not in love with her.” “Then which one of us? Me? Anna?” “No, no, none of you,” I cut her off before she kept naming names. “I’m not in love with any of you. Lust, certainly. But not love.” “Then why didn’t you Bleep Helen?” I winced at her saying the f-word aloud, spotted an out of the way corner, and pulled Uchechi towards it. She still clung to my arm closer than any non-dating couple would, so we got a few stares, but we paid them no mind before I got my back against a wall. Surrounded on three sides, I felt a little more comfortable having this conversation. At least our second period wasn’t far away. “Why didn’t you Bleep Helen?” Uchechi repeated. “I still don’t really know,” I said, a little exasperated. “I’m starting to wish I did just so I wouldn’t have to deal with all these questions about why I didn’t. Yes, she’s really sexy and we had a great time and under normal circumstances I would have plowed the hell out of her. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that if I did that, I’d ... I’d...” “You’d be giving your virginity to someone you didn’t really love,” Uchechi finished for me. “Hence all the questions about which one of us you’re in love with.” Sweeter Than Honey: https://okadabooks.com/book/about/sweeter_than_honey/43801 |

The secretary stepped out of the office. Almost immediately, a lady came in. She couldn't be more than twenty-seven. She was almost six feet tall and had a pretty face. Her hair was stylishly fixed. She looked more like a fashion enthusiast than a government worker. 'Good day, sir. I'm Tosin. I was sent by Ms. Alexander.' 'Yes.' I looked at her all over again. 'She told me about you, but I didn't get your job schedule.’ She smiled warmly and didn't answer me immediately. Her well-fitting clothes looked very new and beautiful. I smiled too. 'Sorry, I didn't offer you a seat.' I pointed at one. 'Sit down, please.' The lady who just called herself Tosin thanked me and took the offer. She cleared her throat. 'I'm your assistant on special duties. My schedule covers sundry matters such as taking you around to places, getting things you need, and such things.' I nodded. Surely, this job was more interesting than I thought. She was studying me too. 'For example, after close of work today, I will take you to the guest house where you'll be staying for now, and show you around.' I stared at her briefly and nodded again. 'One more thing,' she said. Her countenance was cool and calm. 'I'm also to keep you company in case you're bored.' I could not resist the chuckle that I made. 'Very interesting.' I nodded again. 'Alright, Tosin. I actually need someone to show me around, here. I mean I hardly know Abuja.' 'That is one of my duties,' she assured and flashed another smile. Her dentition was well-defined and attractive. 'Now, to start with, will you like to eat anything? Will you like the meal to be delivered to you, or will you like to eat out?' I suddenly remembered that I had not eaten anything since morning. I suppressed a yawn. 'That reminds me that I've actually not had any bite today. I'll rather eat in the office as I have some things to do now, and there's no point wasting time.' 'Very well, sir. What will you like to eat?' 'Get me some pizza and a bottle of water. I'll also like some apple juice.' Tosin nodded and got to her feet. 'Okay, Mr. Ayoola. At your service.' She smiled again and left the office in that sleek way she carried herself. I whistled to myself as I watched her leave. I am also to keep you company, she had said. Wow, that would be interesting. As soon as I finished my meal, I went back to work. Intermittently, I received phone calls. I was so engrossed in the work that time seemed to move fast. When it was ten minutes after 4 o'clock, Tosin stepped inside my office. 'Just a reminder, sir, that the closing time is 4 o'clock.' I grinned. 'I know. I'll soon be through.' I finally stopped working for the day about sixteen minutes after four. I packed some documents into a valise. The laptop would also to be taken home for more work. The office assistant took my things downstairs. Tosin steered me to the official car I would be using. There was a driver waiting. A police officer would also serve as the orderly. I and Tosin sat at the back seats. The sleek car moved out of the premises. I ordered that we should first go to the hotel where I had lodged. I took my things from the hotel room and checked out of the place. The drive to my new abode was less than ten minutes. The guest house was a bungalow sited in the government reservation settlement. A uniformed security man opened the gate for us to drive in. Tosin removed my bags from the car and took them inside. The police orderly and the driver were to come around the following morning by seven. I nodded at them as I dismissed then. I briefly observed the exterior of the bungalow before I moved inside. It looked like a new building and everything inside looked new. There was a lounging room, a large sitting-room that was exquisitely furnished, and five bedrooms. In addition, there was a boys’ quarter that had three rooms. |

At the next intersection, I made a U-turn. “What the hell are you doing?” She demanded “Taking you back to the office. I’m not spending my two days off listening to so much of bitching and being miserable. Helen, I like you. I really do. But, maybe we are just not suited for each other. I’m sorry,” I replied. The next few minutes, we drove in silence. I glanced over at Helen, she was caught up in mixed emotions. On one hand, she was so jealous of Favor. On the other hand, she thought, her and I would spend the next two days in bed together. I saw a small tear forming on the side of her eye closest to me. “Bleep,” I thought to myself. I knew I had just hurt Helen. I put the dagger right through her heart. I didn’t mean to do that. It just came out. Guess once you’ve been burned on love, you tend to circle the wagons around your heart. CHAPTER EIGHT As I came around to Madam Bee’s Place, I pulled in and parked my car. I got a very bewildered look from Helen. “What are we doing here? I thought you were taking me back to the office and dumping me off.” She questioned. “We’re going to eat. Have an adult discussion, which at the end of we will decide which way this car will be headed when we leave the parking lot. Fair enough?” I replied as unemotional as possible. “Yes” Helen said sheepishly. I got out of the car, walked around to her side, opened the door and waited for her. As she got out, I leaned in and kissed her on the lips. Not overly passionately, but just to show that I’m still interested if we can work this out. We went into the restaurant, which was nearly deserted. Only one other table with people. The other table was drunken college age kids having a raucous time. They were loud, but I didn’t care. I asked for a table away from them. The hostess/night shift manager walked us to a booth away from the kids. She tossed the two menus down and said she’d be right back to take a drink order. Helen slid in on one side of the booth and I slid in to the opposite side. I debated In my mind about sliding in next to her but chose not to, not yet anyway. I flipped my menu open. Looked over the listings and decided to just have breakfast. “Any ideas what you would like? My treat,” I said as I looked into her tear-filled eyes. My heart sank. I knew I wounded her. My head was a spinning top. Lots of emotions running through it simultaneously. “Ok guys, what’ll you have?” The hostess/manager/now waitress asked smacking her gum. “Well, I see a wedding ring, so I guess not you” I said, chuckling. The waitress chuckled a bit, most likely at my stupid joke thinking it would help her tip. “I’m sorry Ruth. That was a bad joke on my part. Don’t worry, the jokes are bad and get worse as time goes on. Helen, what would you like?” I said. “Let me have a glass of orange juice, a water with no lemon, and the cobb salad with lite Ruffian dressing, please” Helen said still trying not to tear up Then Ruth looked at me. “I’ll have the man-breakfast, scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, pancakes with maple syrup, and a large glass of pineapple juice, if you have any, if not then apple juice with a large ice water also no lemon,” I directed to Ruth. Ruth smiled, still smacking her gum and walked away. I put my hands out on the table towards Helen, palms up. I was hoping she would reach out and put her hands in mine. But, alas, no. “Helen, I do like you. I hope you know that. But, there is more to me than what you have seen so far. Can you understand that?” I asked quietly. “I guess so. I thought we were going along so well, but then you went and bleeped Favor,” Helen said with a tone of anger. “Helen, we’re not married. We’re not even dating, in fact this MADAM BEE’S PLACE would be our first date. I don’t know what happened between you and Favor for you to be so angry at me and upset with her. Which makes me wonder why is it ok for me to Bleep Josephine and have sex with Madam Faith at her whim?" The Favouri |

This is naija. Welcome aboard. |
Census is good. When Nigeria will conduct a credible and reliable census is what remains a mirage. |
Hmn... Well, life continues. Congrats to her. |
When will the war stop? |
This guy could be preposterous. The struggle for liberation is more of 'brain' than 'brawn.' |
The writer's analogy of MKO and Osinbajo is out of place. While the former broke barriers, the latter is a misguided opportunist. |
Agitating for separatism should not mean wilfully disenfrachising (your own) people. There are better ways of agitations. |
16 Muslims out of over 50 aides? Is that a pass mark? But then, the problem is beyond bigotry. If majority of Nigerians say they want Osinbajo, so be it, as long as the proces that produces him is free and fair. |
Wike is quite right. Consesus is not a true test of democracy. |
