Unserious labour leaders, they don't know the enormity of task at hand hence throwing up figure recklessly oblivious of other factors as government earnings and amount that should be for capital project from earnings.
All earnings cannot be for recurrent.
N80,000 is realistic and OK.
Someone that has been surviving on N35k will.survive on N85k

NLC are not serious with the bogus figures they are putting forward, how will they convince anyone.

We are talking about minimum wage earner here i.e the least wage that should be paid anywhere in Nigeria.

How will a minimum wage earner be living in a house of 40000 per month, that's 480000 per year. Note we are talking about wage for unskilled workers like cleaners, attendants, maid, etc. even private school teachers should not be minimum wage earners but for weak labour laws in Nigeria. How many private establishment is even paying the existing minimum wage even for graduates in their employ?

Medical expenses of 50k per month when health insurance in oyo state is less than 14000/annum for standard package while premium subscription is like 50-100k per annum.

Electricity bill of 20k/month
Waste management bill of 10k/month
For unskilled workers wage? Or maybe NLC is talking about the wage of skilled workers with HND, Bsc etc.

I'm an advocate of citizens' taking on some responsibilities and this reflect in the wages being earned across the cadres.

The figures posted by NLC president though bloated in some aspects, should be considered along the line of responsibilities of a working citizen.
The government are the ones paying for many things and subsidizing which is no longer effective as such system is out of date.

Responsibilities such as Transportation/Fueling, electricity bill, medical insurance, waste management bill, Road tolls, Security bills, feeding, schooling, etc. should be factored in when talking about wages.
These responsibilities being transferred to wage earners will encourage more accountability, transparency and inclusiveness in governance as everybody is involved.

There's no way the government at the centre can face the fixing of the nation alone especially with our large population and diversities. Even govt at state level can not fix micro challenges in their state, everyone must be involved to achieve that.

Can a model be worked out where each local government can generate like 50-100 megawatts each? At least it will ease the burden on the national grid.
Also some of this discos do not have capacity to manage more than a local govt, why give most of them more than a state to manage?
Crime / Re: IG Wants NSCDC, FRSC Merged With Police by tosinet(m): 7:24am On Apr 23
While it's good for different arms of federal policing (NPF, NSCDC, EFCC, FRSC etc) to operate from under the same umbrella, it is wrong to say Nigeria is not ripe for state police.
Infact, Nigeria is even over ripe for local government police as the genesis of most crimes starts from local government level.

Time without numbers, it has been proven that the federal police cannot effectively police a large and complex structure like the Nigerian state.
If a state governor does not have full control of his/her state security, he can't sanction negligence, can't curb impunity can't sack criminal and corrupt entities in the security setup, what will a local government chairman be able to do , talk less of counselor and likes...

Crimes starts from a street and a community under a local government area, under a state, and under a country, as such, policing should also be along that hierarchies and jurisdiction with the federal police being the ultimate and overall head.

This is part of why various levels of security is needed in a security architecture. State and local government police are necessary to cover various levels of security threats.

The federal police doesn't have the time, motivation and manpower to effectively police these low level security threats. They should focus on major crimes.

Now, emergency preparedness starts from ensuring safety measures... licensing operators, safety gears and equipment for users, emergency response etc., enforcement of these safety measures in the local communities falls under the purview of the local govt.
Even safety measures like ambulance services, primary health care/insurance, fire service etc. is local govt's duty as first responders while we state level and federal level response comes in depending on level of the threat.

IPP or solar farm?

But why can't Nigeria manufacture things like solar panels? Nigerian education is a total mess. All talk, nothing to show for it.

Honestly, no! During my curious age, I wanted producing solar panels. After using Fx series of casio calculator, I removed the solar panel to check the secret. I made real research.....

That was when I learnt of stuff like photosensitive materials, electron jump, silicon cell etc.

At such a tender age, I only knew how to improvise to set up all those components. I was haunted by my dad who never wanted to see me "play" but study, my limited knowledge of where to get those materials, my symbian phone which will always reference everything to US and UK.

After years of unsuccessful attempts, I landed in the university and the haunting continued, even worst.

It was an abandoned dream and abandoned hope.
Nevertheless, I was able to produce speakers from scratch. Achieved just by wounding coils around magnetic field and using silver film to reflect the sound.

I failed in:
Solar panels
Generating electricity with motors without battery
Electronic bell
Transistor radio.

In summary, Nigerian education is trash, it buries your aspirations. I later picked Civil Engineering in the University and it's still trash. I can only attribute 95% of the real world knowledge I have now to my Catholic secondary school.

There's a stage in the Nigeria's education ladder that's being skipped and that's the technical education stage. Most of the countries you will see making waves in production today is based on their technical training. We jump from secondary to university/polytechnic skipping the technical stage that should be prerequisite to university education that's is reserved for research works.

You will notice that Nigeria is not lacking in innovators, designers, trail blazers in different fields but we are solely lacking when it comes to reproducing such discoveries in large quantities. That's why there are mainly quacks handling most of our technical level jobs ranging from engineering field to construction field, IT world, agriculture, medical field (fair ...as it's not coincidence that if you have a technical training in any branch of medical field, they are in high demand outside the shores of Nigeria), sports etc.

Even the university education we focus on, only a few percentage of students get admitted each year with the larger percentage left hanging.

If Nigeria will ever be a producing country, technical level education must be compulsory. There's no field that doesn't have technical cadre. Students can go into different fields based on their passion and talents.

Research works have shown that there's no individual/child that has less than three of these combo (talent, interest, passion etc)

Why is report of misconduct not as common and rampant in ranks of local security units like amotekun, hisbah and likes?
It still boils down to impunity which runs from the top to the lowest ranks.

The minister of interior effected changes almost immediately he took the position that everyone sat up because there's clear goals. and consequences for any untold behaviors, hardly will you hear negative report about the man. Now compare him to the one in ministry of aviation, did you see how that ministry is embarrassing Nigeria with the impunity their workers operate.

So when there's little or no consequence for bad actions, the whole unit will be viewed in the same light.

There's a third option;
Govt can address the standards/requirement of employer concerning discrimination of HND holders.

The govt have much more pressing issues than entering the murky waters of dichotomy, they are not ready to solve the issues but rather make a pronouncement that's not practicable just to pacify people.

Infact my own view of this matter is that HND and Bsc can't be equated as their training addresses different areas of their respective industries. Their are existing pathways to cross from one level of training to the other in Nigeria, no one is disputing that.

It now raises question and eyebrows if universities in order climes are creating a new pathway for bringing students with HND into their Bsc program and the NUC is making noise about it.

That's the whole point of this issue, people are trying to go to universities outside the country where their requirements for admission is much more palatable than what is obtainable in Nigeria, yet the NUC is raising dust about this that it is absurd.

..How can u say it's wrong for the commission to manage how a university wants to package a course or programme.......there must be check and balances otherwise universities will just behave anyhow...

Why do u think some course are not approved or even later cancelled in some universities?? Or u have not heard this before?

U should understand that the Universities are all about money most times .........and will do basically anything to draw student in...

What I see here is nigerian universities trying to cash out heavily on the desperation of diploma holders and also the so called discrimination that exist in the labour market ......

If care is not taken we will start having top up to medicine and pharmacy..... The NUC is protecting the University standard and already has a way diploma can transition to BSc which is direct entry in 200 level Weda u have an HND or OND....

Look at at this way... A 200 level biochem or pharmacy student can cross to microbiology by dropping back to 200l micro biology if they want a micro biology degree badly...

..... it doesn't make a difference if the student graduated and went for NYSC with biochem or pharmacy degree before desiring a microbiology degree....they will still go back to 200 level microbiology... that's the design of the NUC..because 200l is where the departmental course begins

But u HND holders are trying to use ur HND to bypass the standard University design of using direct entry...... There is a reason a course was designed to have a 4 or 5 or 6 years stretch plan in the first place ..

I am not against your argument here. The NUC specifies their requirement for entry into the university at various levels, if you're seeking admission for further studies in schools abroad for instance, additional requirement like English proficiency test may be required, that's their own guideline in taking in students.

As such, it is entirely at these foreign schools' discretion to take in students coming with HND, analysing their transcripts and offering them admission at their determined level for the offered course. For NUC to now be raising dust about what is obtainable in another clime looks and sounds somehow.

On the part of FG/SG- Is to fix the industries for HND holders to thrive.
On the part of the HND holder- get admission into University to get the benefits of BSc.

You mean HND holders should write jamb and enter 100l or apply through non existent direct entry route or go for pgd that's not relevant in the field?

...I don't understand why diploma holders want to be seen degree holders without going to a university ...

Nobody is saying they are the same. If I have a HND cert and I later decide I want to go for a Bsc cert also, it is allowed. Infact the NUC have their requirement for admitting someone that has HND into the university which is direct direct entry route.
Some schools admit to 200l while some school may admit them to 300l, that is the NUC requirement and it is not wrong. It is now wrong of NUC to be putting hand in another country's school requirement for admitting HND holders into their Bsc program.

There is no where in the world where parity exists between HND and BA/BSc. They're two different programmes with different learning outcomes. If you cannot be admitted to a university and you went to Poly to gain ND/HND, to gain a university degree in the same subject, you'll have to undertake prescribed number of units before being awarded the degree. This is what overseas universities call top up. But you simply cannot convert HND to BA/BSc, it's not a currency.

So why is the NUC not giving the HND holders that have taken the "prescribed number of units" Bsc but rather give them a worthless pgd cert?
There are schools abroad where you can go for masters directly with your HND cert which is not so in Nigeria, as schools anywhere have different requirement for admitting students.

The requirement for getting a Bsc with your HND in Nigeria is through direct entry, Another country may require a different path such as allowing HND holders take a "prescribed number units" to be able to get their Bsc cert.

Went at JAMB 4 times, scores swinging from 180 to 230, but Unilorin never gave me a shot. It's one of those tough times in life. Watching peers with lesser skills make it while I was home felt like losing. I took a different path, joined Kwara Poly, and graduated with distinction.

Tried direct entry into Unilorin, but they slammed the door in my face AGAIN. Even friends with Upper Credit got through. I was in a cafe, seeing parents pulling strings for their kids' post-JAMB, and it hit me – it's about WHO you know, not WHAT you know.

I didn't have connections. My folks don't play politics, or lick people's asses and I got that from them.

I aced my HND with Upper Credit. I joined where I did my NYSC training, got hired right away. I've got skills I'm confident of. But when I seek better opportunities, even with my certs, it feels like I've wasted life. I'm starting to feel like a charity case at work. Lose this job, and I doubt I'd find the same pay. They're all about that BSc. I feel like a charity case, and it stings.

HND isn't always about not meeting entry requirements. You might not get it if you're not an HND holder. Nobody wants to be treated like a second-class citizen. The discrimination is real, and it's a mental battle.

NUC are just being mischievous, in what way is it justifiable that to be a lecturer in the polytechnic you need a Bsc? I was even arguing with the NBTE officials while trying to get a lecturing job in a polytechnic. Even in trying to be registered with your relevant professional bodies you will still encounter a lot of discrimination.

Nigeria Education policy makers are afraid of allowing hnd top-up to compete with bsc. Let look at it from this perspective, most ND holders routing to BSC programme in the universities perform excellently and top the class.

It's not even matter of being afraid or not. The NUC have their requirements for how anyone with HND can get Bsc cert in Nigerian schools, which is through direct entry, it's their choice, they can't now arise from their mischief and be putting mouth in another country's university requirement on how someone with HND can get a Bsc.

Do you know there are some schools outside Nigeria where you can be admitted for a Masters degree directly with your HND cert without having to go through a PGD as obtained in Nigeria? So schools have different requirements for offering students admission anywhere in the world.

What is the business of NUC with any student that wants to acquire Bsc through topup? They do the same top up for HND holders by offering them so called "PGD" to be able to proceed for Msc, yet the pgd does not equate HND to Bsc in the field, as you need a Bsc to be a lecturer even in a polytechnic.

The only way HND holders can acquire Bsc in Nigeria is by going through jamb direct entry which is even very difficult to get where HND holder are made go through years of repetitive courses before getting Bsc. Even most of the PGD courses are repetitive as most of the courses have been done already while getting the HND certificate.

Now, some foreign university are offering a different route and requirement by which any one with an HND cert can be admitted and undergo the relevant top up courses in order to get a BSC cert and suddenly the NUC seeing their game is up are waking up and saying going for top up programs is absurd.

This is very hypocritical from the NUC and it shows they are intentionally subverting the HND holders as some private universities that came up with similar top up/ conversation programs were made to shut it down. You cannot put a stop to anyone that wants to further their education to be able to be on par with their colleagues in the field.

When you're sure they've learnt that business well, that money you want to use in sending them to school in a country like Nigeria that doesn't value education or have good educational system, use it to start up that business for them. With your guidance and prayers, after 5 to 6 years, you will a young million naira in your hands and they will be doing far better than their mates that went to school and graduated after that 5 or 6 years.. Later in life they can even employ people to run the business for them in their absence, while they go to school.
In this life, wisdom is profitable to direct.

Better yet, technical schools should be considered before proceeding to university for engineering and construction related courses.

Community policing will go a long way and addressing security challenges just as governance should start at the communal level.

I think part of the security challenges Nigeria has stems from the fact that we or say the police setup don't know who is who... someone might just move from a state to another and anonymously settle in the new town/area without security checks and start carrying out whatever business legal or illegal...

There should be a document backed by law that must be submitted to the local security/ community policing setup by property owners that must state the bio-data of their occupants/tenants that will be living on such property for say more than 3 months which must match their details on NIN or other authorized ID.

Security starts from knowing who is with you in your neighborhood and what they are up to.

You want to invite a musician to your church to minister and you want to just give honorarium to the musician and probably leave logistics for you to handle?

The musician will probably come with professional instrumentalists and most likely some of their instruments that runs into millions of naira (A montage should be around 2million naira) not including some necessary staff like sound/production manager and likes...

No information about where they are performing... If they have to travel from say Lagos to abuja/Port Harcourt/Cross River for a program, they probably had to be there a day before the program, who will lodge them and where? Does the team travel by road for such program? How much do you pay for retainership of professional instrumentalists and other members of the musical team or a musician has to be looking for professionals to perform with?

The fear of hacking is not reason enough to put a stop to electronic transmission of results that is far more beneficial in areas of transparency, accountability, security etc. than the outdated method of manual collation and transmission we have been grasping with.

Necessary measures can be out in place to prevent hacking.

The fear of hacking did not prevented us from issuing and using international passports, voters card, printing of money, bank accounts/applications, online payment platforms etc.

Even if the use of internet is necessary for collation and transmission of results and it is not possible in all polling units, the affected units can be noted and transmitted at the ward or local government level.

The pros of electronic transmission of results will far out weight the possible fears as against the use of manual mode of collation with it's associated risks.
