Foreign Affairs › Re: South African Police Kill Striking Miners! by tpia5: 2:15pm On Aug 17, 2012
Why did they charge the police in that manner?

They must have been under the influence of some heavy hallucinogenic agents- not surprised.

A crowd of people (in essence, a mob) charging a police barrier and armed with machetes, daggers, sticks, etc?

Not a good visual- seems like a throwback to centuries past.
useless thread. Sa'rkin Kano is Fuulbe not Hausa. angry
As you can see, he has hausa features.

So, my guess is he also has hausa ancestry.

I would also not be surprised if YOU have fulani ancestry.

Culture › Re: Is Pidgin English From Portuguese? by tpia5: 8:07am On Aug 17, 2012
pidgin was the language of trade and a lot of it was spoken on the slave ships.

the slaves often stayed at port for up to three or six months [or longer] while waiting to be transported overseas, and during this period, they learnt to communicate in pidgin.

this would particularly apply to the ports outside lagos since their captors were english speaking.

sketchy details, but that's what i can recall for now.

Its very likely the language would have some portuguese elements in it, since the portuguese were very active along the coast? Probably started with the portuguese and later added input from other languages as the trade evolved.

chelseabmw: For those of you who think mods have access to your emails,Shame on you all..... Mods don't have access to your personal email. We only have access to delete, hide or modify posts of usernames

I receive lots of spam mails from people here. What I just do is to delete them.We mods are here to serve u better and also make u love nairaland.Again we mods dnt feel superior as we all are all the same, the only difference is that some of us just got to be higher than others in order for them to make the others follow the rules and regulations.

will keep the list updated as necessary.

am also considering another thread for the mods to state their aspirations, goals and mission statement as regards their duties on nl.

how effective do they think they are, are they contributing to the development or decline of nl (not saying anything's wrong with either option), how do they view feedback.

does exposure matter in modulating this place.

eg relating with different types of people.
