Health › Re: Misconceptions About People Living With Sickle Cell Disease by Tranquill:
Abali1: My dear, your questions are in order. And I don't feel you are offending anyone.
Number 1 question: I voiced out your concern during the time Buhari's daughter died. I questioned the people who are attributing her death to Sickle Cell Anaemia. If my memory does not fail me, she died either during child birth or after child birth. (I can be sure now). But I know that she already had children and was over forty years of age.
I gather that 45 years is the average mortality age in Nigeria. So, must every death of a Warrior be attributed to SCD?
2).
In your second observation, I must clear the air by saying that those who are conversant with Sickle Cell and opposing AS/AS marrital union are not trying to play God. No.
Rather why some of us oppose this kind of union is because when these couples get married and produce a SS, they have without knowing it (or knowing it) had a child who may likely suffer untold pains for the rest of his or her life. (Tranquil, it is not right). The SS child goes through Physical and emotional pains and s/he also bears the stigma of being called or known as a Sickler. But bear it in mind that the child has no choice in being born a SS.
Yes, awareness is gradually being created and people are getting to know more about Genotype and SCD. But how many Nigerians will want to have their Sons or Daughters or Nephew or Nieces marry a "SICKLER". But like you rightly pointed out, we are healthier and stronger and more productive than some AA or AS.
NB
The campaign is to eradicate Sickle Cell from Africa and other places where this kind of genotype is found. Just like Cancer and HIV campaign we want it eradicted. Also like HIV/AIDS campaign, it is far better to prevent it than to have a SS and then start praying to God that scientists should hurry and find a cure.
Already, there is a cure for SS. But it is not easily affordable to the average family. A bone marrow transplant costs about N2.5milion. If a family has about two or three SS persons, will they be willing to shell out N5 milion or N7.5milion for a transplant. Even if they are willing, won't it make them to regret ever taking the decision to get married in the first place? Will their Love still wax stronger when they see their child lying sick at the hospital in pains knowing fully well that it was all their fault and no fault of that child?
Tranquil think about all these and give me a justifiable reason why any AS/AS intending couples will willingly want to put their God to the test.
The question I asked is why is it only in Nigeria and by Nigerians that you hear such things that AS/AS marriage is 'not compatible' or that someone should not marry a 'sickler'. How can you eradicate ss in africa or even other parts of the world through promoting such idea only in Nigeria whereas it is not so elsewhere. Infact it could even be a crime in some societes not to get peolpe married because of genotype. I mean western societies. I feel the problem is more witg the ss awareness campaigners as they succeeded in demonising ss patients and now as/as marriage instead of stressing on the need for early screening, intervention and proper management of patients that will make them live healthy and achieve their god-given potentials. What is the guarantee that children born as aa or as will not suffer one ailment or the other? what is the guarantee that even marriage between the so calked 'compatible' genotypes will even bring forth children? If a man that has ss kid abandons his family, it is attributed to the fact that the wife has ss kid even though lots of men with no ss kid also abandon their families. We have had a governor in this country that is ss. Even Dr Christopher Kolade is an ss among other people that have contributed to the betterment of our society. Go and ask them if they regret being born. Ask people around them if they regret having them. If they were prevented by our own wisdom from being born would they have bcome useful to their family and the society? Wheras we have some AA and AS people that have wrecked havoc on their families and the society. The UK NHS defines ss disease as a genetic disorder that is NEITHER THE FAULT OF THE PARENTS NOR THE CHILD. People especially at risk should not be discouraged from marrying whom they love but to go for early screening to detect a baby with ss disorder and start the various treatments from day one that will allow the child grow up normal. Campaign should also dwell on making the government subsidise the cost of permanent cure as well as support various researches and breakthroughs in finding easier, safer and affordable cure for the disorder.
Politics › Re: “obasanjo’s Letter Has Finished President Jonathan”- Femi Fani Kayode (read) by Tranquill:

Do u believe there was such agreement? Why did people like Abubarkar Rimi contest against OBJ during PDP primary in 2003? what was the genesis of OBJ/ATIKU fight? was it not because Atiku was trying to push Obasanjo out under the guise of 'mandela option' of serving only one term? As northerners why did they not just wait till 2007 if such agreement existed
Even if there was such an agreement, why should agreement by a few pple be binding on the entire country? Why should such agreement be superior to the constitution? Why is it that people who claim there was such sacred agreement between unknown individuals be uncomfortable for a national conference to openly discuss the future of the country?

Yes some yorubas especially of the Afenifere fold turned it into a tribal issue.

Tell me who else in this country that believes in crushing his opponents to achieve his desires and aspirations more than Obasanjo yet he is now an apostle of democracy.

Whom did he give the commitment to? if you read El Ruffai's book you will see how Obasanjo denied several times that he was scheming for third term even to his closest advisers until he eventually declared "NO THIRD TERM NO NIGERIA". He is now the embodiment of honor and integrity. I am not an Ijaw man but if despite Abacha, Babangida, Obasanjo Nigerians still vote for Housa, Yoruba and others then Jonathan can not be the end of Ijaw leadership or any of the over 250 ethnic groups in this country.

ilugunboy: Thank you for the decent response..hopefully this thread will stay that way.

it did not start with Jonathan Administration and will not end even if he leaves office.
The threats coming from the like of Asari...Kuku and a supposedly elderly person...Clarke of fire and brimstone if Jonathan is denied the opportunity to have a second term have no precedent...you can show me any link to such if you know of any.

Infact "GEJ is not our possession" is another factor we must recorgnise. It is the factor that has made some people not to see any good in him and some try to undermine is goverment by all means. Boko Haram and some meaningless criticism and politics are also because of "GEJ is not our possession"
That is the problem with some people....the latter day friends and sycophants of the President....the GEJ is not our possession crowd that you are laying all the problems of this administration on..both in the North and South worked towards the emergent of GEJ as an acting President and a substantive President...they worked for his elections even at very great and personal cost...but along the line some people are feeling they owned the President...we will see how far that ownership helps him.

Obasanjo whom I like personally did not write the letter in good faith
How did you come to the conclusion on that......? are you more Nigerian than him or have more stake in the peaceful co-existence of the country..?

he forgot that he personally attended Bode Georges after-prison jamboree even though he was convicted for fraud by a competent court
Apparently he was misled to the true colour of the church programme and he did lambasted BG for such insensitivity and ostentatiousness

Above all....at the end of the day...time shall tell if the letter is in good faith or not.
If you will recall, it was when some supposedly elder statesmen like Ciroma, Babangida and many notherners were openly opposed to GEJ taking over from Yar Adua simply because he is not a northerner, that made people like Clark to start speaking in the same tone and that also gave tauts like Asari the platform to look relevant. They are not speaking with Jonathans consent. People that tried to make June 12 struggle a Yoruba affair did not act so because MKO asked them.

'the GEJ is not our possession' crowd has been consistent from day one. They have only succeeded in undermining the government and make some genuine supporters to see him as not performing.

I am not more nigerian than him neither do I have more stake than him and vice versa but for someone who deliberately tried to change the constitution so he would contest for a 3rd term to now say that it is morally wrong for someone who has the right under the constitution to contest for just second term to excise such right, then tell me why I should believe he wrote the letter in good faith?

Because nigerians condemned his attending BGs jamboree and then to excuse himself he claimed he was misled and u beleived him. Was he told to attend a naming ceremony or BGs mothers funeral?

In 2015 it will be one man one vote. Even an ex this or that will only cast one vote. No cow, no goat will be allowed to vote in the election. Infact Jonathan will not allow the kind of election that Obasanjo allowed Mourice Iwu to conduct.
Politics › Re: “obasanjo’s Letter Has Finished President Jonathan”- Femi Fani Kayode (read) by Tranquill:
ilugunboy: I would allow your side-brush to pass..since I wouldn't want you to turn this thread into an ethnic one.

Your brand of propaganda is exactly what is causing headache for GEJ...as Baba alluded to; that feeling of GEJ is our possession..what you are doing is alienating critical parts of the country that otherwise don't have problem with GEJ.

You should notice how some conscience of the nation have been silenced by people like you.....Wole Soyinka...Femi Falana... Tunde Bakare..Joy Odumakin and the rest of the civil society community.
In as much as I understand how bad "GEJ is our possession" is by the likes of Asari and E.K. Clark, it did not start with Jonathan Administration and will not end even if he leaves office. We saw during Babangida and Abacha. The cabal we saw during Yar Adua time was also pridicated on that factor and Tanko Yakassai confirmed it in a recent interview Even during Obj time we saw how AD people who did not even vote for him were fighting for him especially at the national assembly. It's because he was their "possession". Infact "GEJ is not our possession" is another factor we must recorgnise. It is the factor that has made some people not to see any good in him and some try to undermine his goverment by all means. Boko Haram and some meaningless criticism and politics are also because of "GEJ is not our possession"
Obasanjo whom I like personally did not write the letter in good faith. GEJ did not organise a sham election so that his daughter and godson lost in in Ogun state. GEJ has practically rendered him redundant in PDP. GEJ does not run to him for advise on what he plans to do so making him feel unimportant. These are few of the things paining him. His letter can not stop Jonathan from winning. What amused me most is his calling someone (Al Mustapha) that was freed by the court a murderer but he forgot that he personally attended Bode Georges after-prison jamboree even though he was convicted for fraud by a competent court.

BTW. Go to the achives and see what Fani Kayode said against those you called 'conscience' of the nation including Soyinka, while he was Obasanjos spokesman.
Health › Re: Misconceptions About People Living With Sickle Cell Disease by Tranquill:
Please I have some things bothering my mind that I want to share and will need peoples input. I dont know if I am puting it the right way as not to offend anyone. I am sorry in advance.

1. Why is it that when a person with SS disorder dies even at older age, it seem to be attributed to the fact that he or she has the SS gene whereas you still have AA and AS that die at younger age and in similar circumstances. I had a friend that was AA and died at 29. He came out of the house in the morning bought some grocceries and back to his house and that was his end. If he had SS people will tend to tie his death to it and for me it puts fears in the mind of Warriors unfaily. I also have a friend who is SC but living life and healthier than AA and AS.

2. It seems that discouraging marriage union as a result of 'incompatible' genotype is only in Nigeria and by Nigerians. Infact every article you read online against AS/AS marriage is by Nigerians and it is Nigerians that tend to put the blame of SS offsprings to the parents thereby removing the power to create man from God. Does it have to do with the economy or poverty? Some SS are far more productive and contribute to the society more than the AS and AA people. In the UK most adults dont even know what is genotype and it is never a factor in marriage same as in the US.

The good news I have is that with breakthroughs and advances in various clinics and laboratories, there will definitely be a permanent, safe and affordable cure for this disorder within the next two years. Infact a clinical trial begins early next year for the prenatal cure where the baby is cured in the womb before birth. As the transfer of HIV virus from parents to unborn child is now almost a thing of the past, so I believe this SS disorder will become too. Greetings to all the Warriors.
Health › Hope For Victims Of Sickle Cell Disease-another Breakthrough by Tranquill(op): 7:43pm On Dec 08, 2013
Hope on the Horizon:
A Potential Breakthrough for Sickle Cell
Disease
Overview
More than 100,000 people in the United States and nearly
two million worldwide suffer from sickle cell disease .
Caused by a mutation of the beta-globin gene, sickle cell
disease is highly debilitating and can cause fatal strokes
and heart attacks. Children afflicted with sickle cell require
frequent blood transfusions to prevent stroke and are prone
to pain crises and chronic infections which can be life
threatening. The average life expectancy of a person with
sickle cell disease is about 50 years.

However, after nearly 30 years of research, pediatric and
fetal surgeon Alan W. Flake, MD , director of the Center for
Fetal Research at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, is
on the verge of a potential medical breakthrough: a prenatal
cure for sickle cell disease.
After prenatal diagnosis of sickle cell disease, Dr. Flake’s
pioneering procedure would transplant the mother’s bone
marrow stem cells into her developing fetus while the child
is still in the womb, curing this devastating disease before
the baby is even born. This research has shown success in
animal studies and may progress to testing in clinical trials
within the next few years.

Children’s Hospital is an international leader in both fetal
therapy and the treatment of sickle cell disease and has
pioneered numerous medical breakthroughs that have
dramatically improved the lives of children. Many of these
breakthroughs have then received federal funding support
from the National Institutes of Health to help advance
research results into new standards of care.
Sickle cell disease: A serious chronic illness
Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited disorder
among African-Americans. One in 12 African-
Americans carries a genetic trait for the disease without
suffering symptoms, but 1 in 375 babies are born with
disease-causing cells. There are currently more than
100,000 individuals with sickle cell disease in the United
States alone and millions more worldwide.
Sickle cell disease results from a mutation of the beta-
globin gene that turns normally soft, round red blood cells
into stiff, sickle-shaped ones. These sickle cells tend to
clog small blood vessels, leading to debilitating pain crises
and frequent hospitalizations.
Over time, these blockages damage organs and can lead to
fatal strokes and heart attacks. The average life expectancy
for those with sickle cell disease is approximately 45 years
for men and 55 years for women.
Problematic treatment
While bone marrow transplantation can cure sickle cell
disease, fewer than 15 percent of sickle cell patients can
find a matching donor. It is also highly risky: the mortality
rate is 10 percent and the rate of serious complications is
more than 50 percent.
As a result, fewer than 300 bone marrow transplants have
been performed for sickle cell disease.
Potential cure on the horizon: In utero stem cell
transplantation
The procedure Dr. Flake has designed is a series of two
bone marrow stem cell transplants from the mother to her
child.
The first transplant would occur while the child is still in the
womb, taking advantage of a unique window of time when
the immune system is immature. The fetus’ body then
recognizes the mother’s bone marrow as its own, enabling
a second, non-toxic bone marrow transplant of stem cells
after birth to complete the process.
With normal bone marrow, the child’s body would produce
normal red blood cells, avoiding all of the painful, life-
limiting symptoms of sickle cell disease. Funding support
for this innovative biomedical approach can advance it into
a fully realized, unprecedented and enduring scientific
achievement: curing sickle cell disease at the beginning of
a child’s life.
The Sickle Cell Center at Children’s Hospital is dedicated to
both the treatment of children with sickle cell disease and
advancing research to better manage and ultimately cure
the disease. The program is one of the largest in the U.S.,
providing comprehensive care and services to more than
1,000 patients.
Health › Cure For Sickle Cell Anaemia Advances To Clinical Stage. by Tranquill(op): 7:35pm On Dec 08, 2013
UCLA stem cell gene therapy for sickle cell
disease advances toward clinical trials

Researchers at UCLA's Eli and Edythe Broad Center of
Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research have
successfully established the foundation for using
hematopoietic (blood-producing) stem cells from the bone
marrow of patients with sickle cell disease to treat the
disease. The study was led by Dr. Donald Kohn, professor
of pediatrics and of microbiology, immunology and
molecular genetics.
Sickle cell disease causes the body to produce red blood
cells that are formed like the crescent-shaped blade of a
sickle, which hinders blood flow in the blood vessels and
deprives the body's organs of oxygen.
Kohn introduced an anti-sickling gene into the
hematopoietic stem cells to capitalize on the self-renewing
potential of stem cells and create a continual source of
healthy red blood cells that do not sickle. The breakthrough
gene therapy technique for sickle cell disease is scheduled
to begin clinical trials by early 2014. The study was
published online today ahead of press in the Journal of
Clinical Investigation.
Kohn's gene therapy approach, which uses hematopoietic
stem cells from a patient's own blood, is a revolutionary
alternative to current sickle cell disease treatments as it
creates a self-renewing normal blood cell by inserting a
gene that has anti-sickling properties into hematopoietic
stem cells. This approach also does not rely on the
identification of a matched donor, thus avoiding the risk of
rejection of donor cells. The anti-sickling hematopoietic
stem cells are transplanted back into the patient's bone
marrow and multiply the corrected cells that make red blood
cells without sickling.
"The results demonstrate that our technique of lentiviral
transduction is capable of efficient transfer and consistent
expression of an effective anti-sickling beta-globin gene in
human sickle cell disease bone marrow progenitor cells,
which improved the physiologic parameters of the resulting
red blood cells," Kohn said.
Kohn and colleagues found that in the laboratory the
hematopoietic stem cells produced new non-sickled blood
cells at a rate sufficient for significant clinical improvement
for patients. The new blood cells survive longer than sickled
cells, which could also improve treatment outcomes.
Sickle cell disease mostly affects people of Sub-Saharan
African descent, and more than 90,000 patients in the U.S.
have been diagnosed. It is caused by an inherited mutation
in the beta-globin gene that makes red blood cells change
from their normal shape, which is round and pliable, into a
rigid, sickle-shaped cell. Normal red blood cells are able to
pass easily through the tiniest blood vessels, called
capillaries, carrying oxygen to organs such as the lungs,
liver and kidneys. But due to their rigid structure, sickled
blood cells get stuck in the capillaries.
Current treatments include transplanting patients with
donor hematopoietic stem cells, which is a potential cure
for sickle cell disease, but due to the serious risks of
rejection, only a small number of patients have undergone
this procedure and it is usually restricted to children with
severe symptoms.
This study was supported in part by a Disease Team I Award
from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the
state's stem cell research agency, which was created by a
voter initiative in 2004. The purpose of the disease team
program is to support research focused on one particular
disease that leads to the filing of an investigational new
drug application with the FDA within four years. The
program is designed to speed translational research —
research that takes scientific discoveries from the
laboratory to the patient bedside. This requires new levels
of collaboration between basic laboratory scientists,
medical clinicians, biotechnology experts and
pharmacology experts, to name a few.
Other support came from UCLA's Broad Stem Cell Research
Center and Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and
from the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service
Award.
The Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine
and Stem Cell Research : UCLA's stem cell center was
launched in 2005 with a UCLA commitment of $20 million
over five years. A $20 million gift from the Eli and Edythe
Broad Foundation in 2007 resulted in the renaming of the
center. With more than 200 members, the Broad Stem Cell
Research Center is committed to a multi-disciplinary,
integrated collaboration of scientific, academic and medical
disciplines for the purpose of understanding adult and
human embryonic stem cells. The center supports
innovation, excellence and the highest ethical standards
focused on stem cell research with the intent of facilitating
basic scientific inquiry directed towards future clinical
applications to treat disease. The center is a collaboration
of the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA's Jonsson
Cancer Center, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and
Applied Science and the UCLA College of Letters and
Science.

You are sounding like Jega is the only problem. Are we all not in this country? What is wrong with the electoral system is mainly the politicians. While Jega may be planning for a credible election, the politicians are planning on how to subvert the system and be declared winner and its not just from one party but all the parties. Its not really about Jega but the 'WE MUST WIN ' mentality.

Even when you dial back it tells you the number does not exist. So think of who can possibly be calling you from abroad.

It is simply a paper that you write your own address on so that should there be any need to send a paper mail to you, they just paste it on an evelope and then put it in the post so that it goes to the address that you wrote down by urself. In this case any mistake in the mailing address will purely be ur own fault. I dont know if in Nigeria you can get these plain address stickers but alternatively, type you mailing address on a plain white sheet and then cut the sheet into size that can be 'gummed' to an envelope.

mramosr85: Hi. I have a doubt regarding my points in the Education factor. I'm not quite sure which is my category in education between these two:
- University degree at the Master’s level or equal OR University level entry-to-practice professional degree (occupation must be in NOC 2011 Skill Level A) (23 points)
- Canadian post-secondary degree or diploma for a program of three years or longer, or equal (21 points)

In my country my title states Engineer, I studied for 5 five years at a national university. My code in the NOC list is 2174 Computer Programmer, and my WES assessed credential for Canada is Bachelor’s degree (4 years).

I have read the information in CIC website (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/factor-education.asp), but I don't understand completely the 23 points category.
Your category is the second one: Canadian Post Secondary degree for a program of three years or longer. This is what WES has classified your degree to be and that is what matters most as per the FSWP application regardless of the classification in your home country, so you should be getting 21 points.

The 23 points is for a Canadian masters degree equivalent. In Canada, masters degrees are usually 2 years full time but some people got 1 year masters degree that are classified as equivalent to canadian masters degree so they get 23 points.

bad meat: DRUGS KILL
Does it really have to do with drugs? I remember reading his confession in the late nineties in the now defunct concord newspaper where he said that seventh books of moses has destroyed him, that he tried to manipulate nature without understanding tha laws. I want to believe it has to do more with spiritual.

Pastor Aji: Walai I D̶̲̥̅̊ε̲̣̣̣̥γ̲̣̣ craze grin grin grin
Back †̥ topic, she have decided and have called it quits with the guy (I mean the EX) but ge is always disturbing her with calls. A live scenario happened on Sunday when I visited them and the guy called her repeatedly like 16 times even though she didn't pick those calls
To be sure she is not encouraging the guy, she should pick the call in your presence and make it clear to the guy that she has moved on. I have seen similar scenerio where the lady was pretending but was actually the one encouraging it. It was discovered through her text messages that infact she goes out to meet up with the supposedly EX and even went and registeted business name together while she was hoping to get married to someone else. After all these discoveries, it bcame obvious what would be happening after the marriage and only a fool will have that kind of wife. like someone said, everything lies with the lady. She probably has not shown seriosness in telling the guy to stop calling her. Maybe the guy still dey send her free credits and other fringe benefits.
