anonimi: If the dominant group does not have quality, then how did they become and remain dominant of other groups that have quality?
How do you resolve this inconsistency sorry, just went back to re-check his post, and saw that he didn't put that there. So I will rightly help him upgrade/flesh up that concept. The quality of the dominant group matters o. As you have rightly identified, as in the case of Nigeria, when the dominant group is still largely archaic, then we have what we have. Which is one of the reasons why we wonder how we keep getting the worst of us in the so-called democracy. It is cos the numbers of those who DONT have any semblance of sense far outstrips the number of those who do. The dominant racial group we have is plagued with willful poverty and a gross aversion to education, and thus an aversion to a progressive existence....and that is one of the prime reasons we are where we are today. They know this and carry the badge of their huge numbers with pride.... unfortunately doing so ninu oshi at ise (lack and despondency), and dragging the rest of the country into the abyss. Democracy is actually not just govt of the people as we tend to chorus, but in reality govt of the majority of the people....now when the quality of that majority is shit, then you are doomed. Will our dominant block somehow in no time become wiser, more enlightened, more educated? your guess is as good as mine. Maybe in 300 years |

jedisco: Succinctly put. Legal Immigration opportunities the West is based on economic and political need. Like I keep saying, we did not come here on a 'diversity visa'. Whatever leal route we came by was made open because someone convinced the government they'd benefit more by having that pathway open than closed. Main issue is that many come in, think they've been done an eternal favour and are not driven to reach for higher heights which they have the potential for.
As the demographic decline continues, the next century will be dominated by a scramble for human resources same way the last few were dominated by a rush for natural resources. The west has found a way of doing this while convincing immigrant folks their worth lies in immigration. A good example has been India and China. Their GDP was close until 1995. China found a way to retain its best heads (even those educated abroad) and build wealth while India exported it's many good heads. Its the reason why I'm worried about Nigeria. We seem to be exporting our best heads (yes, I'm guilty) and sugarcoating achievements by Nigerians abroad means little to the home nation this graph is a mouth-stopper💯😁🤣💯😁 This beautiful graph😍😍😍 is a picturesque definition of SUCCESS, and the great part about this is they have only just started. Two countries with almost same population numbers, and look at how one has taken off. The right people and leadership is KEY! When will/how can Nigeria have the right people? The majority are runts, some willfully, some by circumstance. So sad. |

Go to central Beijing CBD, it's almost like you are in central London very multi-cultural - bit exaggerated them too plenty for china so they population drown out population of foreigners. Night life is when you will see some sort of balance Westerners like the nightlife while the Chinese are mostly conservative.
The UAE and KSA have lots of restrictions like China because of their religion but Westerners troop in by the day. And if you go to a some of their expar forums, a lot of them prefer to live in these places than back home.
Some poster talked about child labour, the big Companies in the west are guilty because they outsource their 'child labour' to china and Africa and turn a blind eye and claim a moral high ground word for this hypocrisy. where are your iPhones and co manufatured, lithium for your EVs from child miners in central Africa. If it was a problem for the west, they would boycott these places and manufacture their goods in the west and not outsource manufacturing like they outsource their wars.

If China goes on to become the world dominant power, they stand the chance of being the first to achieve that with the lowest negative impact in human history. Their story has been an economic miracle. Thats what some folks comparing China to the US fail to understand- the miracle is that in 2024, China has become the elephant in the room.
I get your sense of frustration but in doing that, I'd avoid insulting your folks as it depicts self hate.
I said on another fora that just like with most things there would always be different routes and means to good governance The role of every responsible government is to bring returns to the populace and foster the greater good. In this, China has exceedingly excelled. If we limit governance to whether they fit one world or another, then its a different story your bolded line, is one of the things we agree on. Autocracy is an option, and does not necessarily have to be seen as evil. Democracy is an option, and does not necessarily have to be seen as good....and vice versa. If you're a one-way thinker, that's fine too, but it is rather shallow to say someone is deadly simply because he isn't a one-way thinker as you are, and considers autocracy as an option. |

Do a pint size /cup of carbs, proteins, fat and oil, and vitamins (fruits or veggies). Even excluding cost of cooking, it will be far more than 1k.
If you're not cooking and you're just buying already made food, you may get a stiffly rationed healthy diet so to speak, but not enough to even come close to filling your belly. Maybe 'bite/snack size' food, not 'satiate your hunger' food.

emkz: Home Secretary action delivering major cut in migration
Robust Home Secretary action has driven an almost 80% fall in student dependant applications in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/home-secretary-action-delivering-major-cut-in-migration well this isn't the full gist. The full gist shows student numbers haven't dropped so much (put at 15%), although we both know when the breakdown is done, we'd find that the Nigerian applicant numbers have plummeted by a huge percentage, but it appears other nationalities still dey go Youkay Zahra29: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/30/number-foreign-student-family-members-coming-uk-falls/#comment
Interesting that despite the new restrictions, the drop in UK student visa applications is nominal compared to the doomsday predictions....down to 35,000 from 39,900 this time last year. It would be good to see a breakdown of these student visas by nationality.
######
A crackdown on foreign students’ visas has slashed the number of dependants they are bringing into the UK by 80 per cent, Home Office figures show.
The data revealed that the number of dependants granted visas to join their student spouse or parent in the UK has fallen from 32,900 in the first quarter of 2023 to 6,700 in the same period this year.
The number of overseas students applying for visas also fell by 15 per cent, from 39,900 in the first quarter of 2023 to only 35,000 in the same period in 2024....
A crack down by the Home Office on bogus care homes is also believed to have contributed to a 25 per cent fall in the number of health and care visa applications, from 205,800 in the six months from April to September 2023 to 153,500 from October 2023 to March 2024.
This comprised 40,800 main applicants and 112,700 dependants, provisional Home Office data shows. It is likely to reduce further as a ban on care workers bringing dependants into the UK takes effect after being introduced on March 11. Doctors, nurses and other health professionals remain able to bring dependants....
Mr Sunak is expected to announce curbs on foreign student visas amid fears that the route is being used as a back door into claiming asylum.
The Prime Minister is expected to restrict access to the graduate visa route, which currently allows students to remain in the UK for up to two years after finishing their studies without the requirement to get a job.
The announcement is expected to come after the Migration Advisory Committee (Mac) completes a review of the graduate visa route on May 14.
Options understood to be under consideration include reducing the time a foreign graduate can stay in the UK without a skilled job to either six or 12 months.

When people, especially black people, mock China with poverty statements, I find it very appalling and ridiculous considering after Whites and Chinese cousins - Koreans and Japanese - Chinese are the next in terms of developmental status. Arabs exceeds us. So, why try to belittle China?
Yes, China has poor people, just like every country. However, in the East and southeast parts of China, where much of the wealth is, the development of China is at the same level as most Western countries. The major cities of China are comparable to those in the West. There is wealth in China and much of it comes from sheer economic activities rather than the stock market. The recent ranking of billionaires shows it - Chinese cities dominate disproportionately. China, a country filled with destitutes over forty years ago, now has more billionaires than any other country and commands a lot of economic dominance. China trades with more countries than the US.
https://www.visualcapitalist.com/charted-which-country-has-the-most-billionaires-in-2024/#:~:text=China%20has%20814%20billionaires%2C%20the,while%20the%20U.S.%20gained%20109.
When I read the above article in the SCMP, if no be say I dey inside train, I would have shedded a tear because I was extremely impressed by the foresight of their elites and determination to succeed.
E dey irritate me anytime I see black people lampoon China. I keep reading dictatorship and mumbo-jumbo, history has it that EVERY developed and prosperous country you see today underwent a form of dictatorship before it became a prosperous democracy. There were bullying, mass killings and high-handedness. Economic development came before democracy, not after. In cases where there were semblance of democracy, there was a dominant ethnic or racial group or political party who controlled everything. But the majority of countries at the forefront of economic development had a form of dictatorship before they liberalised their political systems.
That said, Mr Treadway, Nigeria in its present state can't develop even with a benevolent dictator (Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore was described as such by Western media). The country's demographics doesn't permit that to happen. For dictatorship to work effectively for the benefit of the populace, there needs to be an ethnic or religious or racial dominance by a group that is egalitarian, enterprising, creative and pragmatic.
Lastly, black people, regardless of where they come from, should stop criticising China. Leave that to people who have built functioning societies. you no dey ever disappoint my guy. True, the unity debacle may also pose some problems, but with an authoritarian, that is not enough of a deterrent. For naija matter, the people simply cannot unite to elect the best of them or even do what is best for themselves. They can't unite guy! You know this and I know this! If we do have an authoritarian who has the passion for the country at heart, I truly believe that may work better for us. Just take the reins and do whatever needs to be done, everyone will fall in line. The key thing is that person being passionate about the country. Anyway, make I bone the matter. |

No one is saying not to speak your truth, but why choose to apply for a visa to live in a country that you don't trust or agree with (majority of) their laws, ethics or policies - and spend a lot of your time unhappy/angry and criticising said policies.... You couldn't pay me to live in Russia, Iran, China etc as their governments don't even care what the people think. again I understand that you're entitled to your opinion, but when something works, I am very very amenable to change. China is a great example. Gerrard59 is in Japan, most don't look to places like China and Japan, but still doesn't change the fact that autocratic China that was struggling with poverty less than 50 years ago, has an economy bigger than competing with the USA today ( *modified/corrected* cos it is not in absolute terms but only when you consider Purchasing Power Parity), and is number one on virtually everything you can think of (quality of education, health systems, infrastructure etc.) Google it if in any doubt. We just tend to not really attach much attention or significance to non-english speaking countries. Russia is still far better than Germany economically toady even despite two years of significant sanctions. The top rankings for education and healthcare, English speaking countries no even dey top 20. Life doesn't start and end with English speaking countries o...or democracy. Autocracy certainly works for some, and democracy isn't absolutely the best. I actually believe Nigeria will be in better state with an autocratic leader who has the nation at heart, even if he only has it at heart up to just 25% and is selfish with the remaining 75%
