Storm ‘Buhari House’; want state party chair sacked By Omeiza Ajayi Abuja — Leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu State, yesterday, stormed the ‘Buhari House’ national secretariat of the party and demanded the immediate sack of Mr. Ugochukwu Agballah-led State Working Committee. ADVERTISING The leaders were led by former Senate President and South East leader in the defunct Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, CECPC, of the party, Senator Ken Nnamani. Others include former Enugu State governor, Sullivan Chime; former Foreign Affairs minister, Geoffrey Onyeama; General J.O.J. Okoloagu Board (retd); Senator Ayogu Eze, Gbazuagu Gbazuagu, and former State Assembly speaker, Eugene Odo. Others are Ifeanyi Nwoga, Onyemuche Nnamani, and Director General, Voice of Nigeria, VON, Mr. Osita Okechukwu. In their petition addressed to the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and titled, “Appeal and petition for urgent intervention to rescue the APC in Enugu from its downward spiral, implosion and imminent collapse”, the petitioners noted that a major crack emerged during the last state Congress, when Mr. Ugochukwu Agballah was surreptitiously manoeuvred into the party to become its state chairman to the bewilderment and vehement opposition of a majority of the party members who knew his antecedents as a person and in Enugu State politics. Part of the petition read: “The Chairman may wish to recall that as Chairman of All Progressives Congress National Peace and Reconciliation Committee that H.E Sullivan Chime, immediate past Governor of Enugu State had led a protest of stakeholders/elders of Enugu State All Progressives Congress Chapter against the emergence of Ugo Agaballah as State Chairman on two grounds: “Non-membership of Ugo Agballah and controversial and irregular process of Ugo Agballah’s emergence as State Chairman. “Ugo Agballah was given the benefit of the doubt by a few leaders of the Party and issued a Certificate of Return. It was felt by those few leaders that the Party needed to change direction at all costs and have a vibrant leader who could finally unite the Party in the state. Unfortunately, the new Chairman did not waste time in proving those majority leaders who opposed his emergence correct in their warning. “He immediately and systematically dismantled the core of the Party structure and brought in his followers. He insulted the Party leaders, including those few who supported his emergence, sidelined them completely in matters affecting the running of the Party in the state and has been operating as a Sole Administrator or indeed a Dictator! The result has been the withdrawal from the Party of a growing number of important leaders and members. “The Party is imploding and on the brink of imminent collapse. It is in no position as things stand, to be competitive in the general elections. The leaders now believe that a radical solution is called for to save the state party from total collapse and disgrace in the state. *The aim is to unify the party through the appointment of a Caretaker Chairman as the current Chairman has alienated and lost the confidence of the majority of the members of the state party and its leadership. “Very importantly, it should be noted that he has been lawfully removed by his Udi/Agbudu ward of Udi LGA of Enugu State on the 19th day of August, 2022 by an overwhelming majority of party members in his ward. “We urge the NWC to immediately save the party in Enugu State from total collapse by removing Mr. Ugochukwu Agballa from office and in his place, put a Caretaker Chairman who should be someone not within the present State Executive Committee. The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, on Tuesday, alleged that stolen crude oil products are now stored in places of worship such as churches and mosques. This was as he lamented that the phenomenon had become widespread, permeating several aspects of society. Kyari disclosed this when he appeared at the 49th Session of the State House Briefing Organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. According to him, the NNPC operatives discovered that stolen petroleum products are stored in places of worship with the consent of the clergy, members, and neighbours. He revealed that at least 295 illegal connections were spotted on a 200km stretch of pipeline in one instance. Such spate of vandalism, he said, has prompted the NNPC to shut down its entire network of pipelines conveying petroleum products nationwide. “Wherever our products have gone to, everybody has become some sort of vandal,” he said. Asides from vandalism, the aging pipelines also contributed to the shutdown. Consequently, the company now relies heavily on petrol tankers, which Kyari admitted, were not favourable to roads. A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, dismissed the fresh bail application filed by suspended DCP Abba Kyari. Justice Emeka Nwite, in a ruling, held that Kyari had not given sufficient grounds for the application to be granted. The judge said the detained police officer failed to raise new facts in his latest application after being denied the earlier bail request. Nwite consequently adjourned the matter until Oct 19, October 20 and 21 for trial continuation. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the judge had, on July 20, fixed today for the ruling on the bail plea filed by Kyari and other police officers charged by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for drug offence. Kyari had prayed the court for another bail following the attack on Kuje Correctional Centre by terrorists who freed scores of their members. Kyari and other defendants are being detained in the Kuje Correctional Centre. On July 5, Boko Haram breakaway faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province, led an attack on the custodial centre. Oyalowo said the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinub, does not own a private university, but understands what it means to educate people. He said, “Thank God Asiwaju doesn’t have a private university. I think he understands; but you can check that universities in Lagos are not on strike. It tells you of the investment he has made in education when he was governor and it has continued. Today, institutions in Lagos are not on strike; it tells you he understands what it means to educate people. “I think we make so much noise about tertiary education that I think we don’t always understand. Tertiary education is not ‘a human right.’ I mean basically by WHO standard primary and secondary schools are actually a right; it’s a criminal offence not to allow people to go through. “If we do so well in primary and secondary schools, we will not have so much problem in the university. The reason is that if you go to the university and you see some of the people we produce as graduates, you will be sad. So we need to develop the bedrock of education. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that he has no preferred candidate among those contesting the 2023 presidential election. Obasanjo, who stated this in Minna on Sunday when he paid former Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar a visit, said he only had a national agenda not a preferred candidate. “I don’t have a special candidate, I have a national agenda.” The former President also said he was in Minna to visit the former Head of State who had been indisposed. “I came to see my brother who has been a little indisposed. I had plans to visit him when he was still in London, but the day I arrived London was the day he returned home. “So that is why I decided to come and see him at home. He is very special so I had to come. Some bandits were said to have invaded a farm in Anchau town, Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State, and killed a soldier while two officials of the farm were kidnapped. Our correspondent learnt that among those abducted by the bandits was a national of Zimbabwe in the attack that took place on Wednesday. According to a source, security operatives are currently combing nearby bushes in search of the abducted victims. As of the time of this report, information, as regards the incident, was sketchy.
